Favourite pub in Forest Hill. I love the decor and the overall atmosphere. The outdoor heating lamps are great too.

🚇 Forest Hill 🍺 £5.80 London Pilsner A Unique Post Office Pub Experience. The Sylvan Post is located on Dartmouth Road in Forest Hill, South East London. The nearest station is Forest Hill Overground, it’s a four minute walk to get here. This pub is situated in a former 1960’s post office and is run by Portobello Brewery. The owner’s of this pub have embraced the building’s history by retaining many of its original features. This is a one bar pub that has its main bar area at the front and a couple of snug areas at the rear. The servery has a thin 60’s style counter with brass fittings. All around the pub you will find kitsch 60s decor like the vintage formica tables and wooden seating. To the right of the servery are a number of booths with an eclectic mix of prints and photos. The stand out features is the postal memorabilia including framed postage stamps and telegrams. There is also post boxes marked Abroad, Country and London plus the old strong room now is converted into a cool little snug. The beer line up was decent and included a number of beers from Portobello Brewery including two cask ales and a good selection of No & Low. I decided on a pint of London Pilsner, my pint hit the spot, price point was average. There is traditional pub grub menu available with some interesting veggie options, Fish & Chips costs £15.50. For those visiting on a Sunday, Roasts take centre stage. We arrived around 2pm on a warm Saturday afternoon in February. The pub was busy and had a nice local neighbourly feel to it. The punters were predominantly young professionals with their young children here for a celebration. There were few other couples and families in attendance enjoying this unique environment. The service was great, the staff were upbeat and friendly. The pub hosts DJ and Quiz Nights, there are also deals on pints during the week for £4.50, check socials for timings and info. The 60’s decor, postal memorabilia, great beer, popular food and local pub feel made for a very enjoyable and unique pub experience. We went here for an early dinner (5:30pm) with a group of children. It was very busy, booking is recommended for a Friday evening. We ordered the fish and chips which was pretty good and had a lovely home made like tartare sauce. They offer a good selection of kids meals. I take a star off as service was quite slow even for a busy evening, we waited around 45mins for meals and when they were ready they didn’t come out the same time. I’m not so bothered about this for adults however for children there was around 10mins+ between all the children receiving their plates.

Beautiful pub, formerly a post office, which is evident from the many lovingly preserved details. The reception area quickly becomes noisy (expected atmosphere), but there are also separate areas for reservations if you like. Good beer, good cuisine for a pub, in addition to hearty meat dishes there is also something for vegetarians. Gladly again.

First time at the Sylvan post was back in 2014, which was nice but recently it's been under new management quite recently (PST covid) and the food has gone really downhill. If you never were there before, it's an ok pub but not what it once was.

Had a great time, lovely cocktails and 2 for £12 on thursdays! Shout out to the staff aswell, the bartenders were welcoming and knew how to have a laugh

I have been popping in for a Sunday Lunch and I must say it's very good, the Yorkshire Puddings are properly done. Not burnt or dry, proper! Friendly staff, used to be the Post Office in Forest Hill!

We go to Forest Hill randomly, but when we want to have a beer in a nice pub & atmosphere, we always choose the Sylvan Post. It's just more relaxing, not pretentious, yet with a very curious and cool decor. Staff always seems happy and aware. Local vibe with open mind. Great beer selection and board game!

Best roast I've had in ages and the staff are wonderful :)

Went for some Fri night drinks. We at the end of the bar and had slow service, recommend trying to get in the centre. Also music was a tad loud when sat under the speaker, be mindful of trying to talk. But love the refurb, it feels more open. Will defo be returning.

Sylvan Post - a great place! Newly refurbished to a great standard. Looks amazing with an even better vibe than before. Great to see the friendly staff back welcoming to all customers. A good range of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic and great tasty food at a decent price. Good sunny outside space with comfy seating inside. All-in-all a lovely place to go to relax, meet and enjoy. Recommended.

Perfect in a sunny day, we da a bottle of rose wine at £22 and some fresh halloumi fries and it was all we wanted, great people around and not to noisy 👌✨

I ordered a burger here, the food was quite nice with a good portion but unfortunately it took about an hour to arrive and when it was ready it was sat on the side for ages while several members of staff stood at the bar. it cost £15 which is too expensive for the standard of service imo. Wouldn’t mind having a drink here but probably wouldn’t eat here again.

The chicken wrap was SO tasty. Hot, tender, crispy chicken, perfectly wrapped and presented, and only £8! Alongside a cold pint and great atmosphere, not to mention exceptional service, made for a perfect lunch.

Fabulous and strange place with excellent beer, great food and a good quiz where you can sit in an actual safe and get drunk. Also the gents is the warmest room I've ever been in that isn't an actual sauna.

Really relaxed atmosphere. Nice friendly staff. Big crowds but served quickly nonetheless. Music a bit loud for catching up with friends and chatting, but nothing that can't be fixed.

Really like this place BUT please can you stop your bartenders from blotting salt onto the rims of glasses with their fingers? Especially when I see them seconds before touching the till screen. Think a pandemic would show that stuff like this should be avoided. Just roll the glass in salt, it's quicker and hygienic.

This used to be one of my favourite pubs before it got taken over a couple of years ago. I went there today again for lunch to give it another chance, I'm so sorry but the food is not good at all and we could not eat it. The staff is super friendly though, but I really hope they do something about their food.

I have to give it a 5 rather than a 4 but it us closer to 5. Nice ale selection. I loved the Westway Pale. Serves food but hit and miss whether it's available in the evening. Post Boxes still on show, from the buildings previous incarnation as Post Office. Interesting snug in former safe/strong room. Loved it

Favourite for chilled out beers

Lovely place but £4.90 for a 330ml bottle of non-alcoholic beer is outrageous. Very poor range and over priced.

I love a roast. It’s my favourite thing to cook and I reckon the ones we had today were pretty much perfect. With decent portions of cauliflower cheese or pigs in blankets for sides too. Well worth trying!

Went for a Sunday Roast and it was great! Really cool interiors and delicious food, the roast chicken was particularly tasty! Our server Emily was really polite, friendly and attentive and we had a great first experience here. Can’t wait to come again another Sunday!

A bit sparse inside but the staff are lovely and the beer was good.

Great burgers (half price mains on Mondays) and margaritas! (Half price on Thursdays). Haven’t been on the weekend for DJ’s.

Amazing Sunday roast! The products are good, the Yorkshire pudding is as it should be and the pork was to die for. Team there is great and accomodating, so do yourself a favour and book a table! You won't regret it!

I was going to give this venue a three star review but after getting ill from eating their food, I thought one star was more appropriate. I come here for the quizzes on Wednesday evenings, from 8pm. They're a lot of fun and the young guy Alex who runs them is really good. First prize is a £50 bar tab though the raffle prize is usually more than that. Second prize is a bottle of wine, which I won once but it was only really good for cooking not drinking. I normally try to arrive early so that I can eat at the pizza place opposite or at a nearby Thai, since I don't find the quality of selection of the food to be high, particularly for veggies/vegans. This month alas I didn't have time to eat elsewhere. There was a new waitress at the pub who was professional and friendly (5 stars for her) but the vegan burger and houmous side dish were awful -'check out the photo. But I was hungry so ate it. Alas a short while later I had stomach cramps and diahorrea, and twelve hours later I still do. My friends who tried the houmous also felt funny but less so. Lesson learnt! Next time, arrive early enough to eat elsewhere! If you find this review helpful, please give it a "like".

Beer selection is trying to be craft, but somehow showcases the mediocre breweries. I thought the interior would be old and cute with a heritage post office. Most of the history appears to be cleared and replaced with standard pub decor.

Went for Sunday lunch. A good sized meal with a great mix of veg and a huge Yorkshire pudding. Sadly the beef was a bit tough and not that flavoursome. Gravy was also a little watery.

So have just had a great roastie, cooked by Chef Jason ( Head Chef). Can honestly say he hit every note with succulent chicken, great roasties and gravy and the cauliflower cheese with its combo of cheddar and Red Leicester with spring onions to garnish was to die for… cabbage with leeks really brings an extra layer of flavour and the heritage carrots add texture alongside the mashed swede.. And add a Yorkies as light as a feather and the size of a desert bowl, what else could you ask for.. Comfort food at it’s best.. And the service by the gorgeous Emily made our afternoon complete.. ALL FOOD IS MICROWAVED! Chicken wings were warm on one side and cold on the other, chips were soggy, and battered fish was completely soft and batter wasn’t cooked through!

Just moved to local area so looking for a great Sunday roast had a look on Google for suggestions and this place came up... I looked for a great roast and got an ok roast was hungry so it did the job. Would just prefer roast potatoes that are not mass cooked as they get really leathery if kept to long and I got leathery potatoes and the same for the Yorkshire pud unfortunately the pork had so much fat on and the chicken was not enough for the money. The sylvan post is a great pub and the decor is great that's a worthy 5 star. But as I came for a great roast and got an ok one I'll give 3 stars

This place is the actual worst. So so overpriced, terrible food, different peoples food in our group came twenty minutes or more apart. I asked the waitress if my food was still coming and she was very rude - and then stood chatting to the chef by the kitchen window holding my food for about ten minutes, she only brought it over when I had stood up to go take it myself. I don’t think I would have even minded the overpriced food that tasted slightly chemically so much if the waitress hadn’t been so unfriendly and arrogant.

Good place to grab a Sunday roast and a pint, would be great if they could add more food & beer selections and possibly utilise the outdoor space a bit more. I remember when this was the post office and they’ve kept some of the old features and memorabilia of the place which is a lovely touch.

I have just been to this pub for a Sunday roast and honestly the belly pork was amazing! The chef came out and we told him how lovely the meal was and he said he was the new chef here. Lovely vibe in this pub and friendly staff. Will definitely be revisiting soon.

Came in with my daughter and grandson and the food was all cooked perfectly. The pineapple juice is very refreshing. This is the perfect place to grab some food and relax even if you have kids with you.

I came on the 28th (yesterday) with my partner and Firstly i must say the cocktails tasted great!! I ordered my favorite types of food which was squid , prawns , halloumi fries(cooked perfectly) and a beef burger(which was my favorite) and it was delicious. The staff are all very welcoming and cheerful which makes the atmosphere even more comfortable. I will be coming here next time with our toddler really soon.
