Emblematic place in the City of London. The public is mostly native. Specialized in fish, simple, product-based cuisine, in an informal and traditional atmosphere at the same time. The staff, charming, gave us great suggestions. The scallops with bacon and the cheese toast, delicious. And the dessert... unbeatable. You have to order the homemade toffee pudding, no matter what.

If you want a delicious meal and 5 star service go to Sweetings! From being greeted at the door by the friendly staff to leaving after a wonderful meal we were really looked after. We had prawn cocktail and seatrout gravalax for starter and a few oysters each. We then had skate and halibut with sides of mash, peas and samphire. The portions were generous and delicious. I will definitely be going here again.

Actual rating is 3.5/5. I'm a little torn because this place is old school and awesome aesthetically. Perhaps I ordered the most tasteless items on the menu. The prawns with bacon were under seasoned and prawns were chewy. The mash and peas well... they were mash and peas. Go for the atmosphere, and definitely don't order the most tasteless items on the menu.

I was the most underdressed person there during the lunch crowd but it did not take away from the experience. Easily one of the best meals I have had in London and would recommend it to anyone. The fried haddock was just so so good especially paired with those thick chips. It would be a challenge for just one person to finish that so worth sharing. Smoked eel and fried bait fish were fantastic starters. Liked the toffee pudding as well. The guiness and wine/champagne combo was different and I am open to try again. Staff and service was outstanding. 2024.07.03

Best seafood lunch in the City. The fish selections are fresh and great. It will satisfy any fish lovers. The alcohol selection is also interesting. They have cocktails served in the tin cup, which is interesting. The staffs are friendly and helpful. The interior is reminiscent of an old English restaurant. An awful lunch today (25 April) with my wife at Sweetings. We arrived at 12.20, were seated at one of the counters and had placed our order by 12.25. By 13.38 we had not been served any food. We asked the manager twice to check where our order had got to and to advise us when it would be served but she failed to report back on both occasions. The restaurant manager appeared completely out of her depth. The place was chaotic with too many sittings for lunch and clearly a major staffing issue in the kitchen. Our food had not arrived after one hour and 15 minutes (the order was basically some grilled fish and sides) so we left the restaurant without eating. Appalling service. Both my wife and I have eaten many times at this restaurant, albeit not for a few years, but this experience was beyond bad and not a patch on previous occasions when the restaurant was under the previous owners. No one, least of all the manager, even bothered to apologise.

This establishment is kind of legendary for all the right reasons. It is my first time here, mainly because is only open for lunch and it does not take reservations. However, it does not need to, as the place is constantly packed by either gentlemen of a bygone era, or city boys discussing deals. The food is classic, old school, cooked divinely, and the service is charming, fast and courteous without being too facetious. I had 6 oysters from Maldon, the fried whitebait, the scallop and bacon, the halibut with mustard sauce, chips and the Bakewell tart with chantilly cream. All if it was faultless, the fried fish was light, denoting a certain expertise in frying, the tartare sauce was divine, as was the scallop and bacon. The halibut was served with a delicate mustard sauce that had the subtle flavour of a light beurre blanc. The chips were also incredible, and the Bakewell tart was one of the best Bakewell tarts I have ever had in Uk ( I also went to Bakewell and this was better than the one made in Bakewell!). All in all a memorable experience

There is a certain demographic that passes through prep school, into private school, then Oxford or Cambridge and a career in the City of London, then finds itself in mid-life, red-faced on a Friday lunch time in Sweetings drinking crisp, cold white wine and enjoying haddock with loosely cooked, perfect poached eggs. This overwhelmingly male demographic clearly knows a thing about fine dining as the mainly fish-based menu at this city institution is wonderful. The setting has probably not changed much in sixty years and the love for the restaurant can be felt through the eclectic collection of art, cartoons and artefacts that adorn the walls. It’s a busy spot but the waiting staff try to accommodate all comers and while it can be cramped it’s hugely enjoyable.

One of the last holdouts of proper City cuisine. Intrigue and gossip takes place over fish based boarding-school fare at narrow wood tables, fuelled by the signature cocktail of half champagne half Guinness in a battleworn silver tankard. The mature, personable waiters are pure class. Yes it's a bit pricier than its equally storied carnivorous counterpart - the nearby Simpsons Tavern. But while the latter still sadly remains closed while locked in a fight for survival against its unscrupulous offshore landlords, Sweetings is the only game in town. Use it or lose it!

A venue living off former glories. Sub-par food, cooked poorly, which is so disappointing given the high quality of the fish. In our party of three, half the dishes sent back - and this is a group that is not usually fussy. Side dishes nasty (dry hard peas, mash turning up 20 mins after mains). The only saving grace were the oysters, chips, black velvet and chablis. Was excited for this, but a very disappointing experience.

Sweetings must be doing something right because they seem to generally get great reviews. However I personally couldn't see it. We sat in the back room which had 90s canteen vibes and where the staff all waited for the next delivery from the blind waiter. One relentlessly clicked his pen right next to us for most of the meal. The food was ok but nothing memorable (we had potted shrimp, gravalax, fish pie and haddock plus a couple of sides). We didn't have any drinks or dessert but the bill still came to £45 for two courses per head. This just doesn't compute for me given there are so many fantastic michelin star lunch deals in London that offer vastly better food for similar money. The restaurant does have some old school british charm but I'm just not sure it really cuts it in 2023.

Yes, it's old school but if you give it the benefit of the doubt you'll enjoy the experience. Our food was well cooked, fresh and tasty. We had the haddock fillets, fried in light breadcrumbs - see my photo. Many years ago it used to be plaice fillets which I always ordered. With chips and peas this dish is close to perfection for anyone wanting that British "fish & chips" meal, except it's a bit more reassuringly expensive here! And I thought the tartare sauce was excellent. Unbelievably, a waiter who served me back in the 80s when I was a young gun starting out in the City is still here. I forget his name but congrats to him for still working hard at Sweetings. And I hope my server who is going back home tomorrow to Gran Canaria for two weeks holiday has a lovely time. I'm sure she deserves it. My only gripe here is the somewhat uncomfortable nature of the bar stools to sit on. Maybe some new ones with some flexible back support could be purchased? So, with a portion of whitebait to start and two glasses of Sancerre, our bill including service came to £106. Not cheap but if I'm only doing this once every five to ten years or so, I can live with it (no company expenses for me these days!) Stuart, Friday 8 Sept 2023.

Robert

We arrived at midday and easily got a table but the restaurant was full by 12:45. Expect to pay £50+ plus wine. The wine list is good. The tables are laid out like a school refectory and you will find yourself bumping elbows with a stranger - but don’t let that put you off. Once or twice a year I manage to find time to visit this wonderful old restaurant that fortunately has not been given a "make-over" by the owners. The tried and trusted layout of counter top places in the ante-room are fun for singles and doubles with the three large tables in the end room providing space for larger parties. My two sons were treating me to lunch and we started with a pint of Black Velvet which was perfectly prepared with Champagne and then draught Guinness. So perfect that a second round was de rigeur! We moved to a large table (no seating until all guests have arrived and no booking) where the delightful Angelo was our waiter. He introduced the specials of the day but we decided on a dozen Oysters (£19,95 for 6) and a portion of fried Whitebait (£9,50) to share. Loved the red wine vinegar and onion dressing for the oysters which were very fresh. My main course was fried fillets of plaice with new potatoes which was excellent. Really fresh fish (two pieces) with a great homemade tartare sauce and plenty of lemons to squeeze as needed. No time for puddings and no need for wine after the BV's.Another fun visit to this heroic establishment - no changes PLEASE!

I had an enjoyable lunch with my colleague today at Sweetings wedged at a narrow plank and jostling elbows with our fellow diners over bland English seafood dishes. I would recommend going mainly for the eavesdropping opportunities to listen to British bankers, businessmen, politicians and members of the upper crust complain about the Hungarians and foreign workers who can’t seem to get their orders right. The patrons are not getting any younger and there are few female diners. The food itself was unremarkable, I had a truly English prawn cocktail —- heavy on the salad cream —- and a decent Dover sole. Prices are steep. But it was worth a trip for the sights and sounds.

Dios me ayude.

Me gustó mucho.

I just love the old fashioned feel and look of this time warp gem right in the heart of the City of London. No booking so make sure you arrive early to enjoy your lunch as this is not open at nights or weekends. I arrived just as the doors opened at 11.30am and immediately ordered two pints (£12.00 each) of black velvet - that wonderful combination of champagne and draft Guinness. My younger son ran from his office at the invitation to join me and we were seated at the only table for two by the window in the back room by 11.45am. Our ancient and kindly waiter from Glasgow recommended the No. 2 Oysters from Essex (£19.95 for 6) to start and these were really fresh and enhanced by the tiny spoonful of red wine vinegar and onion dressing. One complaint was that the buttered brown bread had been left out too long and was slightly dry and curling. For mains I had the bread crumbed fried plaice (£16.00) and my son the poached turbot. Both were of exemplary freshness and cooked to perfection. We shared dishes of boiled new potatoes and spinach which with the superb homemade tartare sauce was all that was needed. To finish I had delicious soft roes on buttery toast (£6.50) and guest enjoyed the Welsh Rarebit (£6.00).

I have been coming here for 40 years and the service is still as good ((some of the Waiters have been here for over 30 years) and although no reservations can be made in advance i suggest you get there early to claim either a place in the back room at a table or on a Bar Stool. Old fashioned it is but truly the best Fish served in the city. Try the Mackeral Pate what a great starter followed by Dover Sole, Grilled and off the Bone with Mashed Potatoes and Peas, absolutely superb. The finish they have great Deserts, i went for the Apple Pie but i recommend the great selection of cheeses and Port. A wonderful selection of Wines all at reasonable prices. A truly great place with loads of ambiance, Old Fashioned but great service and Cuisine

I have been going to Sweetings for many years and it is always excellent. They specialise in fish and they sure do know how to cook it! I had skate wing, pan fried which could not have been bettered. One drawback is that you cannot book a table, but Mondays is quieter and getting a table is not normally a problem. If you have to wait a while for a table to become available then the bar is the place to go and get a fantastic Black Velvet which is served in a silver tankard.A delightful experience
