Suvlaki Shoreditch in Tower Hamlets

Tra i numerosi ristoranti indiani e bengalesi di Brick Lane c'è pure un angolo di Grecia. Ambiente piccolo, gentilezza da parte del personale. Arredamento più ricercato rispetto alla tradizionale taverna greca. Partiamo dal presupposto che ho mangiato benissimo, tutto eccellente. I piatti della tradizione greca rivisitati in una versione gourmet con ingredienti di qualità. Lo schema è quello dei mezedes, ossia degli assaggi o antipasti. Squisita la moussaka, ottima la carne sia di agnello che di maiale accompagnata da una specie di orzo/bulgur, melograno e dell'ottima pita. Ottimi i gamberi saganaki con il pomodoro e la feta. Diciamo che le porzioni sono piccole (ma in un certo senso ti viene detto all'inizio...) e quindi per uscire sazio, bisogna ordinarne vari e quindi di conseguenza i prezzi salgono. Con delle porzioni più ampie sarebbe da 5 stelle. Ovviamente per amanti della cucina mediterranea e greca.

I booked a table for 7:30 pm on a Saturday night but we were about 10 minutes late but this was fine and the staff welcomed my partner and I to a table in the middle of the restaurant. The set up on the menu was slightly confusing because they told us we should order a main each and then 3/4 side dishes which we did and it tasted amazing. However it was slightly too much food for two of us and everyone around us only had a few plates. The food was still amazing and one of the first and best Greek foods I have ever had. The service was good and quick but sometimes felt too quick. It was fairly cheap considering it was a restaurant on Brick Lane and you definitely get your money’s worth. My partner and I ordered a beer, glass of wine, 2 wraps and 4 small dishes and it came to £56! I would highly recommend this restaurant and if you have never had Greek cuisine before you will love it.

This is the first Greek restaurant I've been to and got a friendly reception upon arrival and so was the service. A tapas-like menu, every dish was delicious. Highly recommended!

Been to the original suvlaki many times. I find the mini wraps over priced for the small portion you get and the lamb wasn’t that great this time. The chicken and prawn pita souvlakis were much nicer. Tasty but expensive snacks, as after three mini wraps at 17£ you will still be hungry! Service was good and friendly...

This was our third visit to Suvlaki which is a fabulous little Greek restaurant set in the heart of Brick Lane in Shoreditch. We was really excited about this particular visit as we were going to be meeting the restaurant owner Irene Margariti who wanted our opinion on the New dishes that have just been added to the menu. So on Saturday we enjoyed our usual stroll from Liverpool Street station through Spitalfields and then along the buzzy & trendy Brick Lane. Then just before you reach Bethnal Green road you will find the restaurant on your left. We entered to find Irene waiting for us with a very friendly Greek welcome. We then sat down at our table before Irene came over to first find out more about each other before bringing us the New menu to look at. We could see straight away that there were a lot of dishes that we hadn't tried before and the ones that we have had in the past had been revamped. There were a certain few dishes that Irene wanted us to try so in the end as all the menu looked very appetising we just said to her just bring us what ever you like and with a delightful look on her face off she went. To accompany our food we chose a fantastic greek wine a Rouvalis Asprolithi 2018 which was nice and light with citrus notes. It was now time for the food and we started with the best Taramosalata I've ever had and with the addition of anchovies & pickled cucumber made this dish absolutely delicious. We followed this with the newly redesigned and heavenly Prawn Saganaki with white wine , tomato & feta always a favourite. Our palate was then refreshing with a delightful Greek Salad well you can't not have one. The conveyor belt of food kept coming and next on the list was the Courgette Fritters with smoked cheddar & nigella seeds. We followed this with the New vegetable Moussaka which although it was very tasty it was a bit soft so could have done with a bit of texture. Another New dish followed the Spanakopita which were spinach samosas with metsovone & chilli dressing. We also had the New Spicy Seafood Croquettes with chives & paprika which when dipped in the dressing were very nice and spicy but on their own could have done with a bit more flavour. (sorry no pic). Now it was time for the New skewers with the first being the Scottish Leg of Lamb Skewer with cous cous , pomegranate and a herb & aioli sauce. The second was the Corn Fed Chicken Skewer with sweet potato , courgette & a mustard mayo. I have to say that both were absolutely fantastic and a big thumbs up from me. It was then time to finish the savoury food with the Signature dishes and wow they were both stunning. The Goat Stifado with hilopites & grilled broccoli was a winner all day long. The Roasted Rump of Lamb & Meat Moussaka with confit charlotte potatoes was also amazing with the mixture of lamb & beef really complementing each other to create a fantastic plate of food. It wasn't hard to see why these two dishes are on their signature section. It was now time for a rest which gave us another chance to chat with Irene firstly about the dishes we'd had and also any future plans for the restaurant as well as talking about our love of Greece. So after our nice rest it was time to finish with dessert where they have a choice of three the Orange & Almond Cake with confit Orange & vanilla ice cream which had been revamped and was delicious. , The Greek Style Cheesecake with quince & poached pear was simply heaven. The Mosaiko Chocolate Biscuit with griottine cherries , creme fraiche & Brandy was amazing. So you can guess by now we had all three. Well I do love my desserts. So in a nutshell that was it and a truly fantastic lunch came to an end. The New menu really was a success with only the slightest adjustments to a couple of dishes needing to be made. In all the flavours of the food were definitely the best I've known and therefore I would highly recommend either a return visit or if you've not been before to do so. This in my opinion is the best Greek Food you will eat in London. If you can't make it to Shoreditch then you should head to their other branch in Soho.

An excellent dinner at Suvlaki with the usual wonderful service in the warm friendly environment. Oyster mushroom sauté, Gloucester Old Spot skewer, Prawn Saganaki,, Roasted Lamb and Meat Moussaka and the Grilled Sea Bream fillet and mussels ... I would probably return just to have them again! we have been to Suvlaki a few times and it never fails to amaze us. Food is always fresh and staff very friendly. The goat stifado and sea bream are winners. very good house white wine. definitely recommend it!

I had been to Suvlaki a few times and loved it. Went back a few days ago and they had changed the menu (except for the prices) and possibly the chef as well. The food was flavourless and cold, portions were smaller than usual, the wine was watered down, the pita bread was a week old... incredibly disappointing experience, Suvlaki just lost 6 customers. Would not recommend.

We went on a Thu night and the place was nearly empty. Then I realised why. The concept of this restaurant is all over the place, nothing authentic. It’s a nice interior but way too dark and chairs are uncomfortable, the music is loud with some lost 80s pop tunes, and the menu is like some posh Greek tapas which ridiculous prices. That’s why this restaurant doesn’t work and rarely has people. Greek restaurants are usually known for large plates at low prices, which is why it’s fun to go in groups. Here the portions are tiny and the owner probably thinks he can charge high prices because it’s Shoreditch (which is not characteristic of here at all). Some portions are really nice like feta and tsatsiki but barely enough for one person. And then they don’t take Amex, ie their profit is more important than a satisfied customer. If this restaurant halved their prices, increased their portions and bought new chairs, it would be packed.

Food is quite nice but considering the prices they could definitely be better and larger. Ambient looks really good when inside restaurant but the staff was overly attentive to us with little to do as the restaurant was almost empty other than us. This really ruined my experience as obviously I felt I had to stress eat and couldn't enjoy our food/wine. They also took away our food without asking if we had finished. Two of the dishes also had the blonde waitresses hair in them which was grim.

Zonder blozen, dit is het betere Griekse eten dat ik reeds op restaurant gegeten heb. De bediening is attent en zeer vriendelijk, de wijnen lekker en betaalbaar. We kregen als extra nog een tiramisu van het huis (op basis van yoghurt) en eerlijk gezegd mogen de Italianen de handdoek in de ring smijten. Deze versie was smaakvol en superlicht en een perfecte afsluiter van een voortreffelijke avond. Wij hebben alvast een afspraak voor het najaar.

Visited tonight and was pleasantly surprised by how tasty all the dishes were. Welcoming staff, great authentic food. reasonable prices. Would definitely go back for another meal next time we visit London.

I love this place! Small Greek tapas style food that is great quality and delicious! I’ve only ever gotten the smaller plates and salads but can certainly attest to their great value and flavour. Would recommend booking during the weekend.

We went to Suvlaki for our anniversary dinner last night and we both loved it. I'd seen online that the restaurant is dog friendly and I emailed them beforehand to double check. I got a lovely email back from the manager Irene and she assured me that they love dogs and they're always welcome. We had a very cute little booth table and the waiter was fantastic, very helpful, passionate about the food, chatty and very sweet to our pooch. We tried lots of different dishes as they're mostly tapas sized and we enjoyed everything. My absolute favourite was the spicy prawn croquettes- they are AMAZING and we ordered another plate. The greek wine is yummy too! We'll definitely go again.

I visited with a group of friends, late afternoon so not really peak time. The staff were welcoming and accommodating given that we were a largish group and hadn't booked. The food arrived relatively quickly, but was disappointing. The portions were small, the food was basic but the price wasn't. It certainly was not good value. You can do much better in this area.

I have fallen in love with Suvlaki! We’ve been to both the Soho and Shoreditch branches in the last fortnight (but I only took pics at Shoreditch)! We tried the chicken kebab, moussaka, lamb chops, pork suvlaki wrap and chips. The chicken kebab and lamb chops were so good we ordered them twice! I’m not sure what’s going on with their chips but it’s out of this world- some proper black magic going on there! The pork wrap (Gloucester Old Spot) was so good I ordered it at both branches! Just phenomenal. It’s slightly pricey for the portion sizes but you get quality produce for sure. Highly recommended!
