Lovely place, awesome beef wellington, friendly staff.

We were curious to see what the British take on American "Thanksgiving" was as we happened to be in London. The staff was lovely, the atmosphere was charming and cozy, and the food was delicious! Everything was perfectly timed and the service wonderful. It was also fun to be surrounded by both Londoners and Americans either celebrating Thanksgiving, popping Christmas crackers, meeting up with friends, solo dining with a book...what a lovely crowd. We very much enjoyed our meal and are excited to return!

Very disappointing experience here recently. Cocktails were a mixed bag, some were ok, some just didn’t work. Starter of goats cheese, cranberry and hazelnuts - was so basic, no style or presentation. Roast meats were fine, they are what they are - roast dinners. The fish was ok but came with no sides even though the waitress said there would be sides and that we didn’t need to order more. Service was very haphazard, place was half empty but they also seemed short staffed - it certainly wasn’t attentive. Some of the tables needed a good clean. Some tables had all the dirty dishes left on them long after the customers had left.

Best Beef Wellington I've had!!! You know the beef wellington is done well when the bottom crust is not soggy and the beef juicy! I see they've added nero leaf to help soak up the juice from the meat, great thinking there. Crispy pastry, tender and juicy steak, be sure to drizzle some of the jus to level up the taste! Mushroom eclairs had strong mushroom amora, excellent. Partridge popcorn with cranberry sauce, crispy and tender, great balance with the sauce. The smoked trout was a little on the salty side, although the sauce was supposed to help balance it out but it didn't have enough vinegar or lemon juice, but this was very minor. The side dish - Roast potatoes was a state of the art...so so so so crispy and strong potato amora, soft at the right level, it was soooooo good 💯 I love the chocolate mousse dessert is not sweet at all! I'm a fan of dark chocolate so it was so tasty! I wish I'd had the stomach to finish it all! Highly recommended to come again and definitely try out the beef wellington or the pre-theatre course! Lovely place with excellent Beef Wellington (would have been 5 star for food had there not been a bland and dry turkey sausage roll starter). Great atmosphere and helpful staff, potentially a little understaffed as we could have definitely had more drinks / had to wait rather long on some things including ordering dessert.

Nice cozy restaurant. At the beginning waiter(s) was not the most friendly but by the end he was much warmer. Food was tasty, even the bread and butter amazed me. Manager offered us some apple liqueur at the end, oh boy, it was strong.

We called in for a couple of drinks, it was a lovely atmosphere and wished we were able to stay for dinner but we had booked elsewhere. Nevertheless enjoyed a couple of English beers and my wife enjoyed their nutty Prosecco.

Food was very bland. Waitress really wasn’t great. Champagne glasses not filled, table not cleaned at all during the meal, i did it myself in the end, bread was stale on one side on 2 pieces, just all round not a great experience. The cheese cake tasted like whipped Philadelphia no sweetness at all, the scallops under seasoned, the wellington was under whelming but the gravy was good and the chocolate mousse was ok. All in all we weren’t impressed and left a lot of food. Wouldn’t go back.

Very cosy spot in Soho, Martyna and the team when above and beyond to make our evening a blast. Definitely it’s worth to come back over and over, their selection of British wine Owned and produced at Sussex it’s definitely worth to try! Amazing food, specially the grouse when in season. Will definitely comeback.

Lovely atmosphere, An exceptional experience, the service was professional and at the same time balanced friendly, the food was an explosion of different flavours for every single dish, they were at the perfect temperature and cooking, there was no unpleasant wait between one course and another and the desserts they are a Must Have!

Delicious food, albeit a little overpriced for the scallop starter. The pork chop and rump steak were well-cooked and flavoursome. Rosemary potatoes were tasty. Shared the vegan cheesecake for dessert which was light and fresh. Would definitely come again.

It's one of my favourite places to eat in London! It feels so cosy and somehow like home. The food is always excellent, and the service is attentive. Their beef Wellington is the best I've ever had. They also have a great selection of British wines, which are well-priced. Highly recommend it for a slightly special occasion!

Fantastic 'farm to fork' set lunch. Really good value and very tasty. All with a couple of glasses of the Nutty 2018 sparkling wine, which was delicious. The staff were friendly, helpful and very efficient - I highly recommend this restaurant to try local food and wine made exceptionally well.

6 of us came after a show at the Soho Theatre. The menu looked good and the bread was great. Unfortunately, our steaks and duck were cold when they arrived (even the gravy was cold). We did complain and the food was reheated but that meant we didn’t all eat together and a medium steak wasn’t rare after having been reheated. Our waiter did apologise but it did spoil the whole meal somewhat. Also, there wasn’t any vegetable options aside from fried pumpkin (and potatoes obviously). Slightly strange.

The atmosphere is wonderful. The lights are perfect , so you feel very comfortable. The breast duck is delicious. The potatoes are very good. The vanilla cream is very smooth. Everything is perfect, the service, the place, the wine. Worth every penny.

Overall, enjoyed my experience at Sussex. The drinks and appetizers were great. However, the roast was a bit dissapointing. We ordered both the beef wellington and the beef roast. While the food was delicious, the issue is that it came out a little cold. I wish the food was hotter when it was being served.

Although it was very noisy at the place the beef Wellington was very delicious . The staff should be more attentive to the details and neat. It is not acceptable to have long and not gathered hair and serve people. I saw how the waiter was touching by his hand the Wellington which did not give a nice feeling too. The table was dirty too. Please be more attentive to the details

Five stars for food but a cook book fell off a high shelf onto my plate - threw food all over me - destroying a silk shirt - the staff said… nothing. Absolutely nothing. No apology, no simple acknowledgment of what just happened. just nothing. Oh no wait, an extra napkin. Plus the usual massive service charge. I mean honestly….

We'd seen the Beef Wellington being served a few times when coming here for drinks, so decided to come here for dinner as we had someone visiting. It did not disappoint! Absolutely delicious. And the drinks and vibe were excellent as always.

I made a group booking for dinner here, and Adrian and the team were so friendly, thoughtful and accommodating. We had one diner who had dietary requirements and they were really well looked after. The food was great, the atmosphere was so relaxed and everyone had a great time. Thank you so much!

The beef Wellington was a little overdone to my taste but I loved their hummus (pretty unique flavor with truffle) and hake.

I must say - I am pretty disappointed. For context, I was there for my birthday yesterday with 8 friends and we had to have the set £45 feasting menu (where you had a choice of 2 mains) or, for an additional £17.50pp, you could have the beef wellington. We booked in advance and unlike most places in soho, it was not packed (perhaps for a reason…). Let’s start with the good things. A nice, reasonably quiet restaurant where you can have a slow paced meal without feeling rushed like you do in other places in soho (although I’m starting to think there is a reason for this now). Service was good. The starters and sharing plates were very good and were generous portions. Now let’s move onto what made it really disappointing. Most of the table ordered the beef wellington as their main. Whilst some came nice and pink, the other half came completely well done all the way through, which is completely unacceptable for beef wellington, especially when it is apparently one of the well known dishes here. Meanwhile, 2 of us got the roasted cauliflower as our main. Now it is with absolutely no exaggeration when I say my “main” course arrived with a total of 3 small cauliflower florets on the plate and a handful of mushroom slices with some sauce underneath. It was smaller than most side dishes. My guests were actually laughing at how ridiculous it was and it became a running joke the rest of the evening. Anyway - we had to try to fill ourselves up on the roast potatoes. Now, whilst the starters etc were good, when you are paying £50 (inc vat) for a set menu, you expect a main course to be what it says on the tin - the main dish. Unfortunately this was not the case here at all. Wines weren’t cheap (the cheapest sparkling was around £45 and the most affordable red we were drinking was about £40) and they were ok. Overall it was a pretty costly dinner at around £850 for the 9 of us (about £95pp). The mains really spoilt what was otherwise a nice meal which is a real shame as it was meant to be a fun birthday event that ended up fairly disappointing and expensive. Hopefully we can all laugh about it one day. Well I won’t be returning, and in the meantime, i’m off to invest in a cauliflower farm, as apparently that is where the money is at.

Great food and a lovely atmosphere. We were served by a very kind and helpful young woman, despite our language barrier. After an unfortunate mix-up with a reservation app, the restaurant apologized and promptly resolved the misunderstanding.

I'm an irregular regular to the Sussex, as in I've been going there for several years now, probably 6 visits in all so far. I'm a big fan, the central location, the upmarket country pub dining room vibe, the relaxed but cool atmosphere and serving team are all great - and the food is outstanding. Go there just for the rosemary roast potatoes, a visit is worth it for that alone.

We had the feasting menu. Shame there wasn't any veg for the main course - just potatoes with steak which felt a bit stingy. Plus, literally only two dishes to choose from for mains - there could have been 1 more. The food was generally very good - albeit the beef was also slightly too salty. Finally, the thing that irritated me the most, which took the shine out of our evening and will make me not come back anytime soon (I used to take clients regularly) - the tall man with the striped shirt got snotty with us for a couple of people being ill (2 people out of our party of 7) - and threatened a cover charge. We said that was fair enough, we didn't mind - and they didn't charge us anyway (thanks to the other nice man!) - but for the rest of the evening the man the striped shirt acted arrogantly and when I tried to go to the bathroom, he didn't let me pass and marched in front of me as if it was his right of way and I didn't deserve to be there. Very rude.

Can’t work out why this is place was most booked on first table, nor can we understand where all those good reviews come from. Service is simply nonexistent, ran by 2 men at the front but non of them had much concept of customer service (rude in talking, slow serve time, impatient and loud with plates tidying) The food, was below average I’d say… portions are small and flavour were just rubbish, esp the chorizo snack one… Good luck if you still want to try it yourself Would not recommend by any length

Had expected to love this place but were underwhelmed. Nice decor, but the table was thoroughly sticky. Wine list wasn't readable online (presented in Word), and in the restaurant there was a wine list plus a drinks list and wine selections weren't the same in both. We love bread...but the fermented yeast bread was underproofed/underbaked and doughy. Burrata was good but quite heavy on the pesto. The hake was drowned by the overly rich sauce and leeks were difficult to cut/eat. Deer was nicely done. Room for improvement.

We love this place and visit with slightly embarrassing frequency! Food and drinks always fantastic and the service and atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.

Dined here as a table of 4 and enjoyed the experience throughly. We shared the chorizo, hispi cabbage and cod croquettes to share for starters. We also received the bread and tarragon butter as complimentary staters which was lovely - very soft and buttery. My boyfriend had the venison as it was in season and recommended by our server and he loved it. I had the fillet bass which was also cooked perfectly. Lovely decor and the concept to hero local ingredients executed well. Everything was incredibly fresh. I’m not familiar with UK wines but what was available here got me excited to try more. What stood out was the service. We had a fantastic waitress who made great recommendations and we wouldn’t hesitate to come back.

Superb quality meal in a relaxed setting

The meal I had at Sussex Bar &Restaurant was absolutely incredible! The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the presentation was beautiful. It’s clear that a lot of care and skill went into preparing the dish. I’ll definitely be coming back for more!👌☺️

This place was absolutely exceptional. My boyfriend, our friend and myself were obnoxious and hungover but were treated like gold. We got two bottles of sparkling, cocktails, starters and the beef Wellington. It was the best beef Wellington I’ve ever had. We had two servers : Adrian and Ishmael (sorry for spelling errors) (?) they were so attentive and friendly to us. The atmosphere wasn’t too loud and it was a friendly vibe. I recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a lovely group dining experience in London. We’ll be back next time we’re in London!

We came in during our trip to London in June and our meal here was one of the more memorable meals we enjoyed on this trip. Service was excellent and the food was fresh and delicious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Olvidable de principio a fin. Comida bastante agradable en el mejor de los casos, pero la mayoría de las comidas muy por debajo del estándar que habíamos esperado. Wellington llegó con pasteles húmedos y remojados en salsa (¡no en el buen sentido! A pesar de alcanzar mi microscopio que por casualidad llevaba conmigo, no pude ver nada parecido a una vieira en cada una de las conchas del plato que llegó a la mesa. En cambio, estaban hacinados con pan rallado frito. El personal no podía estar menos interesado. Aburridos y desencajados desde el momento en que entramos a la habitación sin alma... ¡Qué pena! Muchos lugares mejores en la zona. ¡Una experiencia abrumadora y olvidable!

Dont plan your birthday here, they dont do anything special for you. Even if you call asking it when its a double birthday date

Absolutely fantastic experience. We had a large booking celebrating a birthday so decided on the set menu. It was incredible, beautiful flavours, perfect portion size for 6 courses and lovely wine pairing. Staff were brilliant as well.

A lovely setting to enjoy some realy good food, wine and whisky. Staff are friendly and welcoming and very knowledgeable and looking for an excuse to get some friends together to try the chefs table.

Mixed feelings on this venue. We used the first table app which may have impacted our experience. Whilst it was good value with the first table discount, I probably wouldn’t visit again without the offer. The food was good but nothing really special, the decor inside was fine (seemed better in the bar) but the service was very functional, I would expect more from the type of restaurant it was. Overall, it was okay but much better places in the area.

It was the first time to Sussex. Hopefully it won't be the last. Excellent Beef Wellington. Could not fault. The only problem was we didn't have enough time !!

I've eaten here for dinner, and for lunch. Both times were superb. At lunchtime there was a really good set menu, which is very reasonably priced. The freshness and traceability of the food shines through and the staff are very attentive without intruding.

Can't fault this place, everything was top quality and the staff made sure we were well looked after from start to finish. Don't miss on the beef wellington. Excited to return

We came here for a pre theatre meal on Friday. Not very busy but the staff were attentive and kept a good eye on us. They came and explained the menu which was great. Loved the pre starter amuse bouche of profiteroles and the food was lovingly cooked and well presented. Loved the rosemary roast potatoes!

Had the set lunch menu, really good value. The pork chop was massive, and cooked to perfection. Had a side of beautiful crispy potatoes, the starter of goats cheese was delicious, as was the set menu Eton mess dessert. It was reasonably quiet, surprisingly given the quality and price of that set menu. I'll be back.

Food was really fresh and service provided by Martyna and Joyce was excellent. The only reason I marked the steak down by a star was because it was been slightly over grilled (burned) on the outside. The cod and truffle potatoes was excellent, highly recommend. We also tried the flat peach dessert which had a unique flavour of rosemary which was unexpected.

Fantastic, imaginative classics cooked to perfection.

Absolutely lovely food, really tasty and beautifully presented. The pollock with mushrooms had a smokiness that made the dishso much more than white fish. The crispy potatoes are fabulous. Atmosphere slightly lacking as the restaurant was not busy on the lunchtime we visited. Very well placed for pre theatre. The service is friendly and professional. Would ddefinitely recommend for good, fresh food.

This feels like a secret too well kept. Excellent food, attentive staff and produce from their own Sussex farm. Yet on the 2 occasions I have been their (both lunchtimes) its been surprisingly quiet (the only reason I marked down atmosphere). If you read this do go - you wont regret it and if you book through First Table you'll get a sizeable discount. Whats not to like!

Not cheap but super food and friendly staff

Quick and light(ish) lunch having their smaller and sharing plates. A lovely restaurant and their snacks give a feeling of British tapas. The gazpacho and salt beef croquette were stand out. The service was friendly, with solid wine pairing recommendations. Would recommend!

Loved the experience and my meal at Sussex. It's lovely inside, the quality of the food is amazing and the service was spectacular.

We came here primarily because my son was in search of a beef Wellington but it ended up being one of our favorite places during our short visit to London. Food was delicious, sophisticated, and yet very approachable. Atmosphere felt like a French bistro on a quiet little street. Service was perfect. Looking forward to coming back here again sometime.

One star for the lack of employee training. We enjoyed the dinner and the service until the end - after paying the full bill with 15% service charge and reaching out my hand for the receipt, the waiter threw the receipt towards the table like a waste paper and the receipt almost fell into my partner’s dessert. Shocking all of us, he did that without taking a second look or saying a word. Just left. If the restaurant owner still cares about their customers, there is urgent need to let the employee understand how consistent customer experience matters. Food: 4 Atmosphere: 4 Service: 1

I've lived in London for years and only recently stumbled across Sussex, and I'm so glad I have! Their local and wild ethos and zero waste focus is exactly what I look for in a restaurant, and it's coupled with a really nice aesthetic and ambiance inside. The food, as expected, is fantastic and the team, even better. I recently booked for a large group to dine there for my birthday and they couldn't do enough for me. They were so flexible with the sharing menu to ensure everything would be perfect for my group, a few of which I had flagged can be fussy eaters! I was really grateful, and will definitely be back!

Gorgeous atmosphere and great food and service!

Popped in for an impromptu dinner with my best friend last night. The restaurant looked beautiful and inviting from the outside, and fit our vibe perfectly. The cocktails we had were delightful (dirty martini and a Sussex spritz), and our starters were to die for (burrata and trout). We thought we’d surely picked a winner. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed with our main course. We shared truffle and pecorino potatoes and the wild garlic risotto. The risotto was almost inedible; bland with absolutely no flavour. The textures were lovely but it really was disappointing. It needed a much richer, umami flavour such as stock or miso. The potatoes were also bland, though they were well cooked. We had to add the entire serving bowl of salt we were given to even be able to finish our main course. We finished our meal with a selection of all available cheeses, which were all beautiful and you could tell were extremely high quality. The crispbread and onion marmalade served with the cheese were also amazing. A lovely end to a tumultuous meal. The service was also noticeably slow, which we didn’t mind too much as we had a lot to catch up on, but I can imagine others would get pretty impatient. Our waiter was lovely and friendly. I’d be keen to give this restaurant another try in case they were having an off day- but for the price point, atmosphere and ambience, we were sorely disappointed.

Great place championing farm to table British produce. Creative dishes, well executed, Ismail is a champion as well! Well worth a look into. Get the wellington!

This is not a place where people give small tips. If you do, the waiter’s mood changes quicker than the weather. It is strange that they pour wine at the counter rather than in front of customers.

Birthday dinner for 6. We had a really good meal, with some specials suggested by the new management, who are doing a great job there. The house sparkling from the family's own Nutbourne vineyard in Sussex was an inspired opener, then a variety of starters - yes, trout eclair really!- plus asparagus, burrata, cured trout and an unusual tempura scapes, a type of spring onion-like vegetable from the family farm; mains were excellent: the house beef wellington and the whole roast chicken - cooked 'New York' style - in its entirety! 2 quality bottles of French red and a bottle of their Sussex reserve white (just £34.50) and we were full. Marvellous collection of wall hangings - collages of wine labels!

Came to Sussex Bar in between our Harry Potter intermission, and it was amazing! Staff was friendly, great wine selection and food was great. We ordered the beef wellington for two. Would come back again. Must try.

Went as family for my birthday and every morsel was delicious! Highly recommend the Beef Wellington and the whole roast chicken. The wines from their own vineyard were quite special. It was a lovely birthday celebration!

Fabulous meal - loved the sharing platters in particular, great for a group! They’ve got the ambiance and music level just right so it’s vibey but not loud. Love how they have their vineyard and farm in Sussex and bring their passion for food to your table! Amazing long wine list. Really want to try their chef’s table when I’m in a bigger group!

My dining experience at the restaurant yesterday was a mix of positives and negatives. The food was delicious, and the environment was pleasant, creating a nice ambiance for our meal. The pricing was reasonable, adding to the overall positive experience. One of the staff members stood out for being particularly nice and gentle, which we appreciated. However, our experience was marred by an incident while paying the bill. One of my family members had forgotten to bring her physical card and was unaware of the limitations on Google Pay. When she attempted to make a second payment, a different staff member displayed an annoyed attitude towards her. Given that we had spent a generous amount at the restaurant, I expected a more understanding and respectful attitude from the staff. While the food and setting were commendable, the lack of courteous service during the payment process was disappointing and affected our overall dining experience.
