Sunday lunch with beef Wellington far beyond our expectations, fabulous! Staff was lovely and helped making husband’s birthday lunch special! Special Thanks to Martyna! We will surely come back!

We had a wonderful time on our first visit to Sussex a few years ago and booked a table for our trip to London this weekend, but unfortunately the service was quite poor and we didn't enjoy our experience as much. We were seated by the window at the back of the main dining area and I think we were forgotten about a bit. Only one of our starters arrived and after 10 minutes of waiting I had to ask where the other one was as I think it's impolite to start eating before everyone at the table has their food. After finishing our starters (steak tartare, cured trout - both fine) we waited for our plates to be taken away and they weren't. Our mains arrived some time later before our starter plates had been removed. We also had no cutlery to eat our main courses (rump steak, sea bass - again, both fine). We were left for 15 minutes with the dessert menu before asking for the bill. We also requested the 13.5% service charge be removed once that arrived as a) that's particularly high for the UK where 10% is the norm, and we'd have usually stuck with that unless service was exceptional, and b) the service didn't warrant a tip. Some positives - the blush rosé was very enjoyable and zingy and the yeast bread with herb butter was great.

After having visited the Gladwin family’s vineyard Nutbourne, we were very excited to visit the Sussex on Frith Street. Overall the pre theatre menu was good value (4 courses for £48). The main let downs were being served very average chips rather than roasted potatoes (as described in the menu) and the chocolate mousse dessert, which was so bitter it was inedible. However, the main reason for this review was the very poor customer service. The staff lacked attentiveness to customers and it did not appear that there was a maitre de overseeing them, ensuring they were looking after customers rather than giggling like school children in by the bar!

We only popped in for a drink but we were made so welcome. We ended up staying for a few! So good to see a bar/restaurant championing British food & drinks. And all done with so much style. Joao made us feel so welcome & we also enjoyed complimentary nibbles. We will be eating the full menu next time! Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend

Last night, my friends and I went to this great restaurant. We chosen several starters, all of which were absolutely delicious. The beef tartare and smoked trout fillet were standouts. For our main course, we tried the pork chop, and it was so tender it practically melted in our mouths. Our waitress, Claire, was super friendly and went the extra mile to make sure we had everything we needed. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great meal.

When entering there was a fire alarm going on for a while! These things happen and nobody’s fault but not ideal for the ambience or those with anxiety or noise sensitivity! The food was interesting and pretty creative. Only critical feedback is that the cheese portions are tiny. £4 for a Dairylea (smaller actually) sized bit of Brie?! No chance. Luckily ours was on a half price promo. Staff were lovely but service was a little slow considering how quiet it was, and welcome drinks especially took ages. You could’ve got more money out of us if it had come 15 mins earlier - we would have ordered wine for sure but had to rush off to theatre! Sorry.

Such a beautifully inviting, warm atmosphere with nuances of the old English countryside with subtle contemporary nods. The food is fresh, with international influences combined with traditional British elements. This paired with one of the excellent wines (or cocktails. Or both!) makes for a wonderful evening out with friends, family or lovers. All of this is enhanced by the friendly and knowledgeable staff who are attentive, but not overbearing, and comfortably efficient so as not to make you feel rushed along, but not abandoned at your table either.

Jenn & Claire were superb, top service, really attentive and helped make our 30th Anniversary celebration meal really special,- - oh and the food was delicious Thank You !

Very nice restaurant Affordable place in the centre of London, five-star food, five-star service, very polite staff I'll be back many times for a relaxing dinner with my unforgettable date.

We went there on Saturday evening and had a table for 9 guests. The quality of the food was poor at best and the mains did not all come out at the same time or with the sides so it was very disjointed .the restaurant was at best half booked so it wasn’t as if the kitchen or waiting team were under enormous pressure. We were celebrating two birthdays and they brought out a celebration desert but it was burnt and editable. At this point I complained they removed the desserts and replaced them after a while with another option. I spoke to a manger who was dismissive and then another member of staff got involved and between them dismissed my complaint and finally said they would deal with it. My son went to the bathroom and over head them moaning about me complaining which isn’t great. Finally we had the bill and the allowed a bottle of red and a glass of white on the house. In reality every one left the restaurant disappointed and we will definitely not be back. Food not up to scratch and Foh lacking in all levels.

Just amazing, service was beyond excellent. Will recommend to friends for the Beef Wellington alone, let alone all the other delicious items like the choriz,o chef’s kiss!

Highly recommend Our server Claire gave exceptional service from start to finish along with the rest of the team. The mushroom Eclair was out of this world, and the beef wellington was the best I have ever had. Simply divine! Can't wait to come back and try the roast!

I was lucky to have booked a work lunch there for the chef's table downstairs which was really nice. It was an extremely calm kitchen but was interesting to see them prepping food. It was a set tasting menu, but was impressed when I said there were two vegetarians in the group of 10 they were able to cook a bespoke 5/6 dishes and serve at the same time as everyone else. Definitely recommend, and the upstairs looked nice too.

I'm not sure why I haven't been here before! We had a great experience, the food was excellent, with decent-sized portions and not overpriced. The service was warm and attentive.

I had an exceptional experience at Sussex Bar & Restaurant! The service was absolutely top-notch and genuinely welcoming. The staff made me feel well cared for. A special mention goes to Oscar, who was incredibly kind and friendly. They took the time to engage in conversation and made some fantastic recommendations. One standout was the Villa Haas from Austria, which they suggested. It’s an absolute gem—smooth, rich, velvety and fine tanning with full of character.

Oscar was amazing, best cocktails in London. Highly recommend.

Lovely restaurant, slightly removed from the thronging Soho streets where eateries can charge anything because theres always another customer - Sussex is a well priced restaurant with an interesting menu that will definitely take us back. We came here for the Yorkshire pudding and they delivered. I had their sirloin and it was delicious, as were the greens. The potatoes had some serious crunch on them and the carrots were bursting with umami flavor. The Yorkshire pudding was the cherry on top. It was such a treat. Worth every penny. Half way through they surprised us with mocktails! Tasted like a lemon drop but I am not sure. It was so good that I could drink it in one long sip! Dangerous if it had alcohol!

We came here for the Sunday roast, and it was absolutely fantastic! The service provided by João was excellent – he was attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed. The "Daily Loosener" was also a great addition to our meal. Highly recommended for a relaxing and delicious Sunday experience!

Good and attentive service from Joao!!! Food is delicious as well! Rich in flavors, and more importantly respect for the gastronomy. There's high levels of natural talent in Joao's hands in preparing the delicate and elaborate dishes he presents and brings to the table.

I visited Sussex Bar & Restaurant today with my wife for a Sunday roast, and we were thoroughly impressed. Joao took excellent care of us, ensuring we had a fantastic dining experience. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was top-notch. We will certainly be coming back again—100% recommended!

Dined here last week, found it a disappointing and frustrating experience. The food itself is slightly elevated home cooking, nothing memorable, and the service is very poor. I arrived and waited 25 minutes at table before even being greeted to see if I wanted a drink etc. And the restaurant was not at all busy. For the prices being charged, I’d recommend upping your game! I would not go back or recommend.

Very disappointing experience here recently. Cocktails were a mixed bag, some were ok, some just didn’t work. Starter of goats cheese, cranberry and hazelnuts - was so basic, no style or presentation. Roast meats were fine, they are what they are - roast dinners. The fish was ok but came with no sides even though the waitress said there would be sides and that we didn’t need to order more. Service was very haphazard, place was half empty but they also seemed short staffed - it certainly wasn’t attentive. Some of the tables needed a good clean. Some tables had all the dirty dishes left on them long after the customers had left.

We were curious to see what the British take on American "Thanksgiving" was as we happened to be in London. The staff was lovely, the atmosphere was charming and cozy, and the food was delicious! Everything was perfectly timed and the service wonderful. It was also fun to be surrounded by both Londoners and Americans either celebrating Thanksgiving, popping Christmas crackers, meeting up with friends, solo dining with a book...what a lovely crowd. We very much enjoyed our meal and are excited to return!

Best Beef Wellington I've had!!! You know the beef wellington is done well when the bottom crust is not soggy and the beef juicy! I see they've added nero leaf to help soak up the juice from the meat, great thinking there. Crispy pastry, tender and juicy steak, be sure to drizzle some of the jus to level up the taste! Mushroom eclairs had strong mushroom amora, excellent. Partridge popcorn with cranberry sauce, crispy and tender, great balance with the sauce. The smoked trout was a little on the salty side, although the sauce was supposed to help balance it out but it didn't have enough vinegar or lemon juice, but this was very minor. The side dish - Roast potatoes was a state of the art...so so so so crispy and strong potato amora, soft at the right level, it was soooooo good 💯 I love the chocolate mousse dessert is not sweet at all! I'm a fan of dark chocolate so it was so tasty! I wish I'd had the stomach to finish it all! Highly recommended to come again and definitely try out the beef wellington or the pre-theatre course! Thank you Joao and his team for the great service 🙌

Lovely place with excellent Beef Wellington (would have been 5 star for food had there not been a bland and dry turkey sausage roll starter). Great atmosphere and helpful staff, potentially a little understaffed as we could have definitely had more drinks / had to wait rather long on some things including ordering dessert.

We had the most wonderful lunch for 8 people. The tasting menu was delicious and the staff went above and beyond to make our experience really wonderful.

Nice cozy restaurant. At the beginning waiter(s) was not the most friendly but by the end he was much warmer. Food was tasty, even the bread and butter amazed me. Manager offered us some apple liqueur at the end, oh boy, it was strong.

Martina took brilliant care of my group of 25 for our team lunch. Great food, cute little Soho classic restaurant. Highly recommended!

Very cosy spot in Soho, Martyna and the team when above and beyond to make our evening a blast. Definitely it’s worth to come back over and over, their selection of British wine Owned and produced at Sussex it’s definitely worth to try! Amazing food, specially the grouse when in season. Will definitely comeback.

Food was very bland. Waitress really wasn’t great. Champagne glasses not filled, table not cleaned at all during the meal, i did it myself in the end, bread was stale on one side on 2 pieces, just all round not a great experience. The cheese cake tasted like whipped Philadelphia no sweetness at all, the scallops under seasoned, the wellington was under whelming but the gravy was good and the chocolate mousse was ok. All in all we weren’t impressed and left a lot of food. Wouldn’t go back.

We called in for a couple of drinks, it was a lovely atmosphere and wished we were able to stay for dinner but we had booked elsewhere. Nevertheless enjoyed a couple of English beers and my wife enjoyed their nutty Prosecco.

Lovely atmosphere, An exceptional experience, the service was professional and at the same time balanced friendly, the food was an explosion of different flavours for every single dish, they were at the perfect temperature and cooking, there was no unpleasant wait between one course and another and the desserts they are a Must Have!

Delicious food, albeit a little overpriced for the scallop starter. The pork chop and rump steak were well-cooked and flavoursome. Rosemary potatoes were tasty. Shared the vegan cheesecake for dessert which was light and fresh. Would definitely come again.

It's one of my favourite places to eat in London! It feels so cosy and somehow like home. The food is always excellent, and the service is attentive. Their beef Wellington is the best I've ever had. They also have a great selection of British wines, which are well-priced. Highly recommend it for a slightly special occasion!

Fantastic 'farm to fork' set lunch. Really good value and very tasty. All with a couple of glasses of the Nutty 2018 sparkling wine, which was delicious. The staff were friendly, helpful and very efficient - I highly recommend this restaurant to try local food and wine made exceptionally well.

6 of us came after a show at the Soho Theatre. The menu looked good and the bread was great. Unfortunately, our steaks and duck were cold when they arrived (even the gravy was cold). We did complain and the food was reheated but that meant we didn’t all eat together and a medium steak wasn’t rare after having been reheated. Our waiter did apologise but it did spoil the whole meal somewhat. Also, there wasn’t any vegetable options aside from fried pumpkin (and potatoes obviously). Slightly strange.

The atmosphere is wonderful. The lights are perfect , so you feel very comfortable. The breast duck is delicious. The potatoes are very good. The vanilla cream is very smooth. Everything is perfect, the service, the place, the wine. Worth every penny.

Overall, enjoyed my experience at Sussex. The drinks and appetizers were great. However, the roast was a bit dissapointing. We ordered both the beef wellington and the beef roast. While the food was delicious, the issue is that it came out a little cold. I wish the food was hotter when it was being served.

Although it was very noisy at the place the beef Wellington was very delicious . The staff should be more attentive to the details and neat. It is not acceptable to have long and not gathered hair and serve people. I saw how the waiter was touching by his hand the Wellington which did not give a nice feeling too. The table was dirty too. Please be more attentive to the details

Five stars for food but a cook book fell off a high shelf onto my plate - threw food all over me - destroying a silk shirt - the staff said… nothing. Absolutely nothing. No apology, no simple acknowledgment of what just happened. just nothing. Oh no wait, an extra napkin. Plus the usual massive service charge. I mean honestly….

We'd seen the Beef Wellington being served a few times when coming here for drinks, so decided to come here for dinner as we had someone visiting. It did not disappoint! Absolutely delicious. And the drinks and vibe were excellent as always.

I made a group booking for dinner here, and Adrian and the team were so friendly, thoughtful and accommodating. We had one diner who had dietary requirements and they were really well looked after. The food was great, the atmosphere was so relaxed and everyone had a great time. Thank you so much!

The beef Wellington was a little overdone to my taste but I loved their hummus (pretty unique flavor with truffle) and hake.

I must say - I am pretty disappointed. For context, I was there for my birthday yesterday with 8 friends and we had to have the set £45 feasting menu (where you had a choice of 2 mains) or, for an additional £17.50pp, you could have the beef wellington. We booked in advance and unlike most places in soho, it was not packed (perhaps for a reason…). Let’s start with the good things. A nice, reasonably quiet restaurant where you can have a slow paced meal without feeling rushed like you do in other places in soho (although I’m starting to think there is a reason for this now). Service was good. The starters and sharing plates were very good and were generous portions. Now let’s move onto what made it really disappointing. Most of the table ordered the beef wellington as their main. Whilst some came nice and pink, the other half came completely well done all the way through, which is completely unacceptable for beef wellington, especially when it is apparently one of the well known dishes here. Meanwhile, 2 of us got the roasted cauliflower as our main. Now it is with absolutely no exaggeration when I say my “main” course arrived with a total of 3 small cauliflower florets on the plate and a handful of mushroom slices with some sauce underneath. It was smaller than most side dishes. My guests were actually laughing at how ridiculous it was and it became a running joke the rest of the evening. Anyway - we had to try to fill ourselves up on the roast potatoes. Now, whilst the starters etc were good, when you are paying £50 (inc vat) for a set menu, you expect a main course to be what it says on the tin - the main dish. Unfortunately this was not the case here at all. Wines weren’t cheap (the cheapest sparkling was around £45 and the most affordable red we were drinking was about £40) and they were ok. Overall it was a pretty costly dinner at around £850 for the 9 of us (about £95pp). The mains really spoilt what was otherwise a nice meal which is a real shame as it was meant to be a fun birthday event that ended up fairly disappointing and expensive. Hopefully we can all laugh about it one day. Well I won’t be returning, and in the meantime, i’m off to invest in a cauliflower farm, as apparently that is where the money is at.

I'm an irregular regular to the Sussex, as in I've been going there for several years now, probably 6 visits in all so far. I'm a big fan, the central location, the upmarket country pub dining room vibe, the relaxed but cool atmosphere and serving team are all great - and the food is outstanding. Go there just for the rosemary roast potatoes, a visit is worth it for that alone.
