It’s taken me way too long to eat here, a wonderful light dining experience beneath St Mary le Bow Church. Excellent fare served efficiently from a varied and well priced menu. Perfect for a single course lunch at under £20, keen to return for more next time. Cafe Below is a great antidote to the usual City eateries. Recommended.

Absolutely beautiful well done, had the dry tikka lamb, and couldn’t fault it, the only down side is I had no cash to tip the lovely delivery driver, keep up the good work as I will be back 😊

On the hottest day of the year, you need a cool spot for lunch and this is ideal. The crypt restaurant is beautifully cool and spacious. The menu is perfect for a leisurely meal and the food was excellent. Staff were really welcoming and friendly and the prices are very reasonable considering the location. Highly recommended.

My order never arrived. I tried calling the restaurant but no one picked up.

Lovely salad lunch - hidden gem!

The lamb curry was lovely meat soft no fat or grisly bits will be ordering again.

This is an amazing looking place. Completely unique. The nexus is interesting and everything is reasonably priced, especially considering its location

We loved Cafe Below. It was a very very nice lunch in a very different place. The service was nice and the food delicious. Just a little bit of small portions specially when you are traveling with youngsters. Great vegetarian menu. Would definitely repeat!!

I can highly recommend their vegetarian dishes, they are incredibly tasty! You won't be disappointed! It's very affordable food, fast and excellent service in a wonderful setting near Cheap Side.

A lovely place to go. Don't go if you just want a sandwich though. However, if you want a proper lunch with really nice and helpful staff and good food, this is the place!

Didn’t enjoy the meal as much as I used to from cafe Raj very disappointed ,food could have been hotter and my poppadum was soft

Small friendly cafe in the St Mary Le Bow Church. Went for breakfast, scrambled eggs and salmon were lovely.

Food was cold and bland. There was very little meat in the railway curry and the keema nan had very little meat in it.

Fabulous homemade food with an interesting menu, veggie options and helpful when booking gluten free. Cafe Below is also an atmospheric venue, a crypt in Wren church only 100m from Bank Tube. It also serves breakfast from 7 to 10am, something we're yet to try - but want to! Also, it's bookable for private functions and I'd suggest that it's well worth considering, both for a special private celebration or an important work event. This was about my 4th visit, and I've already booked a Twelfth Night lunch for six friends to catch up after a while. Perfect!

What a beautiful venue, with stunning fresh homemade food, served with a smile. One of the hidden gems on the London restaurant scene. Definitely worth a visit.

Got my main wrong and sent a starter that was just one butterfly prawn, couldn’t eat due to the breadcrumbs and I’m allergic. The rest of the food was very bland and I actually just ended up throwing it away.

Beautiful architecture, pretty dead mind you it is in the crypt! Lighting need changing, not in keeping with the surroundings to stark. Only had coffee

So-so, not great and not bad. Did not find a great reason to return. The coffee looks good in the picture but the coffee was very disappointing everywhere we went in London. What's up with that?

Good athmosphere. Nice place to eat or have a coffee which is extremly good.

I have been using this restaurant for years and they have never disappointed, either through there takeaway or eating in their restaurant a top spot if you love a curry

Very misleading pricing. Be careful, the prices displayed on the wall are for takeaway, for eating in add another 50%!

We had a quick lunch at the beginning of September on a Tuesday at the "Café Below". We took a main and a dessert each. That was pretty good and original. A bit on the expensive side though I would say, as the prices were not the same than mentioned at the entrance. Nice atmosphere, as this is in a kind of crypt under a church. Of course this is well renovated.

Curry didn’t have any flavour at all, quite disappointing as use are my fav curry house

Delicious lunch and pleasant attentive service. I just stumbled across this cafe, noticed their little sign while visiting St Mary-le-Bow. Nice menu — I had the lamb stew — and their fresh, homemade lemonade was a treat.

We have been using the Rag for a few months and although the curry is good we have noticed the portion in the curry box seems to be getting less and less so will go back to using the railway for now

Food was really good here!!! I was very surprised at the lunch. It's a bit echoy in here meaning loud but the atmosphere is really cool.

Have used you guys for years but today has been awful! The potatoes in the Bombay and saag aloo taste rotten. The lamb in the bhuna is freezing cold and the sauce is tasteless.

Have used this Indian for years and never had a problem. But today it was cold and bland. the Poppadoms were chewy and the mint sauce was tasteless

Tasty lunch option in the City (super fast service too).

Service and venue are great. Breakfast was average. Nothing wrong with it but just meh. I’d also recommend playing some background music. We were the first there for brekky at 8am and it was dead silent which is a little off.

Visited this beautiful crypt restaurant for the first time in many years. Just as good as ever, and the service was impeccable. Generous portion of hot and well- prepared vegetarian quiche and mixture of salads. Won’t leave it so long for another visit..

My go-to lunch place! The food is absolutely delicious

I have been to this restaurant many times (although not for a few years) and love it as a lighter, healthier option compared to other local sit down restaurants with plenty of vegetarian options. I had the vegan chilli and my friend had the quiche with salad, which were both very nice. The staff were very attentive, the food arrived very quickly and in general we had a lovely time. The only downside for me is it's a very noisy place (nothing they can really do about it, the crypt wasn't originally designed as a restaurant!). Maybe not suitable if you are hard of hearing/don't want to raise your voice to chat. This visit was also the first time I've ever taken a moment to explore the church above stairs too which has some lovely, quite modern-looking stained glass windows and feels like an oasis of calm in a busy part of the City of London.

Food is good but the service can be hit and miss.

I always enjoy eating at The Cafe Below. Well cooked, healthy but delicious food. Service was great, just slightly slow catching someone's eye to pay, but overally thoroughly enjoyed. Acoustics can be quite loud when full but great atmosphere.

Historic venue. Naturally being in the crypt it was rather cold. I couldn't fault the service or the food.

My second visit - I had delicious succulent pork belly and crispy crackling served with apple sauce, tasty mash and beetroot - well balanced flavours - a hearty wintry lunch - washed down with a large glass of Merlot - coupled with prompt friendly service. What’s not to like!

I feel mean not giving 5 stars, but I never do - nothing is perfect. But, Cafe Below is great value, the service is polite and efficient, the menu eclectic and aside from being in a crypt (but that's why it's called the Cafe Below and why it's so charming), so a bit live in terms of sound, it's just lovely

I would go out of my way to go here again. Even though it was in the crypt it was bright and airy. The staff were a delight. The food is very good. My friend and I had a slice of the lemon cake it had a layer of lemon curd so good.

it is a great place for good quality food with a wide vege choice but at excellent prices. With a main course at £15, it is far cheaper than everywhere else in the City.

Cafe Below is a city institution that is here to stay. It feels special, the staff and professional, competent and friendly. The food is good. Great for a quick business lunch or a quick catch up with friends. I recommend the daily soups.

I ordered- 1 vegetable curry, 1 vegetable madras, 2 pilau rice, 4 papadoms and chips. The veg curry was quite watery and not much veg, although the taste was nice albeit mild. The madras was thicker and I’m told was very tasty. The chips.. basically supermarket chips, wasn’t very nice and the papadoms were a bit too greasy for my liking. The rice was nice. All in all I was pleased with my order, I enjoyed my meal. Side note; if you, like me, enjoy the “extras” you normally get with India takeaway like the onion side salad and chutneys you will be disappointed as they do not provide these with the order.

Nice cup of tea in an extraordinary space that predates the Wren church above by at least half a millennium.
