Sunar Gow in South Derbyshire

We visited as a group in the week for the first time since refurbishment. The decor has certainly had an uplift and the restaurant has a modern and original vibe. The food was good, portions were generous and the menu has all the classics and some ingenious dishes with an Indian twist. Everything was cooked and served very promptly and the flavours were good. The presentation was exceptional, added to the upmarket ambience and was a step above your average curry house. What really made the Sunar Gow special, though, was the service and the staff: particularly Rahim and Mo. They were welcoming and friendly and went out of their way to proudly explain the meaning behind the restaurant name and ensure we had what we needed, from drinks to table space, and we were enjoying our meal. When a minor error was made with the order they were quick to waive the charge for an extra dish and even tailored an off menu request for one of our party. They were attentive without being intrusive and genuinely friendly and engaging. Overall a very pleasant experience and everything felt a bit more special than a standard curry house!

I decided to treat my wife to an Indian meal much to my regret. We was attending a nearby seminar and was looking forward to a Saturday night dinner after day one of the seminar. Following dinner we returned to our overnight stay where I started to feel really ill! I had a fish starter and mains which made me so ill ill never forget the following day attending the seminar which I had to abandon at a great loss of money. I was so ill I couldn’t drive home at the cost of an extra overnight stay as my wife cannot drive. I then had to take time of work so all in all it turned out a very expensive meal. The service was extremely slow which made the whole thing a very tiring experience. Beware of any fish on the menu.

Fantastic food and great service. Chef came out to discuss the food and recommended starter and main meal based on what we told him. Best Keema nan and fried rice I have had. Soft drinks and alcohol free beer only but this is not an issue when food is this good.

Cannot fault this restaurant at all - it’s not long reopened after a full refurb and changed to a non alcohol serving restaurant ( really wasn’t an issue to any of us ) the focus is on the food quality and experience - on arrival the staff were all friendly / knowledgable and very personalable …. The decor is beautiful not a penny spared - the chef came out to discuss our likes etc and after talking to him and hearing his passion about his food and the display really was a lovely informative chat - each one of our party chose something they wouldn’t have had if the chef hadn’t come to chat. The focus really is on the food experience and we cannot fault it at all - would recommend to anyone so please spread the word - if your looking for a standard curry after a few pints then don’t waste your or their time as it’s a bit more refined but well worth a visit 👍🏻

Fantastic! Came here for a meal during a family holiday. The setting was absolutely beautiful. Staff were really helpful and courteous. The food was exceptional! So flavoursome and you can tell there was so much skill in preparing. Highly recommend! Just sorry its not near to where we live!

Wow! Visited Sunar Glow with my partner to celebrate and it didn’t disappoint. Food was 10/10, the service was exceptional and staff made the whole night so special. Couldn’t recommend enough!

Long wait, luke warm average food when it arrived and the rice was missing. Rang them to inform them and they said they could get rice to us in 20 minutes by which time the rest of the food would have been cold and we were by this point hungry. Got offered free onion bajis on next order but we won't be taking them up on it.

A good night was ruined by poor service at the end. The waiters were very quick to give us the dessert menu and so all three of us a had dessert but when two of us had finished the dessert the waiters took our dishes away whilst the third person was still eating. Also they took two sets of drink glasses away whilst one person was still drinking their drink. They then immediately brought us the bill and card machine and told us to pay the bill without us even seeing was value was on the hand held device. when I challenged them about this the person with the device was quite defensive. They clearly wanted out table back bearing in mind we had only been there 90 minutes. If they had indicated to us they wanted the table back we wouldn't have had the desserts. We left feeling very undervalued. We won't be going back.

We had food here as a group. They set out a table for us that was done to get the whole group in. The staff were very pleasant and helpful with food questions and sortig out drinks. The food came out fairly quickly, was tasty and decent sized portions. It was reasonably priced as well. The only down side, they didn't offer any gluten free naan bread as a number of other restaurants are now offering. This would have made it 5 stars from me.

Fabulous 50th Birthday meal for 28 people. Food was lovely - tasty and hot Staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for us. They certainly didn't disappoint 😋 Thanks to Haz and the team for a great evening 👍 we will be back 😊

I stopped getting takeaways from Sunar Gow as the onion pickle served with popadoms was a horrible onion jam not the fresh chopped onion and salad. The salad that accompanied chicken tikka was boring and the mint yogurt not great. Had a takeaway tonight which was delicious, all the things I’d found missing were perfect, loved it!

Got a takeaway of various dishes and sides and it was all incredibly delicious and varied. Everything tasted so fresh and was cooked to perfection . Both the flavours and textures were beautiful and every dish had a different characteristic. Would HIGHLY reccomend.

This is quite simply the best Indian / Bangladeshi restaurant in the the area. Whether it be a restaurant or take-away experience you won’t be disappointed. 10/10

We moved to Hilton three years ago and since living here, routinely order from Sunar Gow. The staff are the kindest people you could meet and put a lot of effort into creating a lovely atmosphere to eat in the restaurant. Staff are attentive but not disruptive- always incredibly friendly. Equally, the takeaways are always delicious and hot. We collect to make it easier for them and for us to decide when we eat but when we have had delivery, no issues. Recommendations for the chicken tikka jalfrezi and saag dishes. They’re our favourite but we had a slightly more traditional meal here on Christmas Day which was equally appetising. Overall, we love it at Sunar Gow and have never had a bad meal. Eat in or take away, you won’t regret using them for an Indian meal!!!

Waited an hour and 20mins. When rang to ask why was told it was due to the rain and flooding. Asked the delivery driver if that was the case and he said no, there was no flooding! There was a hair in one of the curries, some of the chicken was extremely tough and one piece looked off! Rang to complain but they didn’t seem bothered and didn’t even apologise. Going elsewhere in future!

Went in for a takeaway and it was honestly one of the best curry’s we’ve ever had. The staff were so welcoming and polite and the food was ready to take away within half an hour. Would definitely recommend Lovely restaurant, fairly priced and incredibly welcoming!

We visited for a family gathering last night.Expectations met with the usual and familiar dishes on the menu, all arriving to our table as orderedHighlights Lamb shank looked really nice and generally all meals well presented and tasty, on the downside lamb chops were really tough and some of the popadoms not so crispy Overall OK

I have eaten at this restaurant a number of times and have also enjoyed several takeaways. On Friday I was told that my food would be delivered between an hour and 1 hour 10 minutes. The food arrived after an hour and a half. The Nan bread was cold and the rest of the food was lukewarm. I contacted the restaurant through their website which I haven’t received a response from, I rang on Saturday to be told that someone would ring me back when they were quiet, Over 24 hours after I was told this no one has contacted me. This takeaway was disappointing from a venue which is usually so good.

We visited Sunar Gow as a foursome, all of us for the first time. We had a very enjoyable meal. My salmon tikka starter was lovely as was the prawn sag main. The restaurant is quite big as a former pub and was also very busy which is a good sign. They are also licenced so no need to take your own drink. We would definitely return .

Disappointed again, Butter Chicken is nothing like any I’ve had before, Rogan Josh lacked flavour and the lamb was a little tough, Naan’s fairly small but thick rather like a pizza base. Delivery was also half an hour late with no apology or reason. It’ll be some time before I order a take away from here again

Two weeks ago tonight I ordered a takeaway as we were so happy with the last one we had, I phoned for my order to be delivered for around 7.30pm, however it turned up at 5.30pm! I was not too happy the delivery driver rang through to try to sort it, he passed the phone to me to speak with the boss, I said I wanted it for 7.30pm as my husband wasn’t home until then, as I felt sorry for the delivery driver I accepted it but was told I couldn’t have any discount as it had already been sent with the bill to pay on delivery, so I was told next time I ordered again you would discount me, we ordered four curries ,one was supposed to be butter chicken which we believe it was a chicken korma , so not only did you get the time wrong our order was wrong too!!!

Absolutely fabulous evening last night for mine and my friends birthdays! Our waiter was surperb, he was so friendly and welcoming and made our night really special! His name was Zak and he definitely deserves a special mention! Now had several takeaways from here with different dishes and not really had the wow factor. This time we had popadoms and starters but no salad or sauces were given. Big let down. Main course was ok. Had high hopes for this restaurant.

The service and food at The Sunar Gow are just lovely. Staff are warm and welcoming, and even though we only go rarely to collect a take out, staff always remember our names, adding that personal touch. Staff are always friendly and polite, smart dressed, and nothing is too much trouble. The resteraunt is always spotlessly clean, and appealing to diners. Food is always deliciously tasty, and served quickly and efficiently. I absolutely love the whole experience here, and would highly recommend.

Chips were burnt, wouldn’t even call them chips.2 hour wait for the food, asked for poppadoms and didn’t get any, naan bread was ok but overall wouldn’t recommend it again to anybody, they’ve changed their curry dishes by the look and taste of them, had to make some food at home as I couldn’t eat much of it due to it being burnt

Have ordered take aways from here for the past 10 years. Phoned up tonight (Friday 18th Sept) and placed my order for delivery. The past 10 times the order has been delivered its missing items. I ended the call tonight by saying “do not forget to include the salad” sure enough the ordered was delivered with no salad or sauce included. When I spoke to the owner to complain the order wasn’t correct he was rude and abrupt on the phone call. I tried to explain to him that this was the 10th time in a row the order wasn’t correct. He offered to give me a refund if I didn’t open the food and returned it. The previous owner was so much more professional and friendly. Terrible customer service

I previously left a bad review , there was a misunderstanding with my takeaway delivery. I came to TripAdvisor to complain however We was then contacted regarding the review. Thank you for rectifying the issue that we had,we have since ordered many takeaways and no problems at all. Food is 10/10 The owners of this establishment Cleary care about their customers and they couldn't be more helpful. We will continue to recommend this place.Thanks again!

Upon arrival I said hello like any polite person would and was mocked by this member of staff. He was then pushy in getting us to order, (baring in mind there was only one other table in) and kept coming over making jokes And comments and making us feel uncomfortable. I had almost finished my drink so he asked me if I would like another, I said no and then he proceeded to take my drink (with some left in) away. Things when from bad to worse when we went to pay and he was extremely pushy in getting us to add a tip onto our card payment. When none of us did this he demanded we left a cash tip and would not take no for an answer, very rude and intimidating making us feel very uncomfortable and trying to tell us we had to pay a service charge before we left. Never in my life has a waiter demanded I left a tip. In the end we had to walk out whilst he was still trying to bully us into giving him a cash tip. We have always enjoyed our times here before, of which there has been many, but I will never step foot back in there again. I feel sorry for the other members of staff that were clearly cringing at him. Hideous customer service.

We considered walking straight out when we saw the lack of table spacing but as it was Bank Holiday evening we didn't believe we would get in anywhere else at such short notice. Had we known there was such a lack of attention to table spacing we would not have booked to come here, and this has put us off future visits even though the food was really tasty. Having had this most uncomfortable experience we will now always make a point of enquiring about table spacing with anywhere else we book in the future.

We went here as part of the Government discount scheme. Initially we thought that there was no one else in as the usual restaurant area was empty only to find that meals are now being taken in the back area where tables can be better social distanced. Staff were wearing mask and there was plenty of hand sanitiser on offer so it all felt very safe.Food was good as usual although there was some confusion whether they had cider on offer ( they did) and the bill for the 3 of us with the discount was cheap.

For 5 years we have ordered takeaways from you, we have a pub and we recommend your place to all of our customers who order between 80-100 pounds worth with several customers ordering on the same night. Tonight we was told that we are now to far for them to travel. The money we have sent your way over the years is a lot ! Tonight's order alone was £113 pounds which you refused. I suggest that you perhaps take the order first and then decide whether the 12 minute drive is worth it. We will no longer send any business your way, the bulk menus we were given to hand out to our customers will be binned. The guy on the phone was damn right rude, place clearly doesn't need the money. Bring back masud !Google maps shows that it would have been 12 minutes! 12 minutes... shocking

we loved this place and even drove back for take aways when we moved 5 miles away. Something has gone badly wrong - dishes missing from take aways food cold and the latest tonight rice missing chips cold and mold on the naan bread haven't had a complete decent takeaway in so, so long, we have to accept it is no longer the same place. I have been visiting this Restaurant for years and I am sad to write a poor review. My recent visit ended in problems with the Card Machine. Twice I out my PIN in and it took a while to go through, then came back as void, so I was asked if I wanted to use another Card, I was quite cross and told them I had enough funds to pay the Bill, on the third occasion it was successful, but I then noticed in my Bank Account it hadn’t been cancelled, but All three payments was sat pending on my account, which left me short in my Bank and stopped me being able to use my Account without going Overdrawn. I have now made numerous attempts to resolve this with the Restaurant, as my Bank as advised it can take 7 days for the money to go back in to my Account, but to date they have not emailed , or called me back. All I can say is I will not be returning.

First time dining at the Sunar Gow, I love within a 10 minute drive and not ever dined. The interior was clean and modern. There was a wide selection of options on the menu. I chose the tandoori fish and and my boyfriend chose the lamb starter for mains we had chicken tikka masala which was all lovely. The service was quick and the servers were welcoming and friendly, we didn’t expect the level of service we got which was a nice surprise! Only negative from the night was that we were sat very close to other diners. The restaurant wasn’t busy and we were all sat next to each other. Overall a very nice meal and we will be visiting again.

Food has no taste , chicken tikka masala , 7 pieces of chicken in a very runny tasteless soup substance, no taste to naan bread either. Will not be ordering again

Beautifully cooked and presented food. I would recommend the garlic chilli chicken.This restaurant get busy and it’s no wonder why, as the staff are very attentive and the service is efficient. It is spotless. The restaurant has modern fittings and fixtures. The decor makes it feel warm and inviting but bright and inviting.I visited with my two friend and each dish was amazing, hot and on hot plates.Great food, great evening

It has been a couple of years since having a meal here. Read the reviews and decided to give it a try. The food was nicely presented but unfortunately very bland. I don't like hot spicy food but even I was looking for some spice. At the end of the meal I ordered tea ( £3 ) and was presented with a cup with a tea bag floating around in it. Call me picky but at the price I would have at least expected a teapot.

Attended with a friend for long over due catch up. On arrival only one other person in restaurant but that didn’t matter. Ordered food, food well presented but very oily and greasy, and more expensive than your standard curry houses. Special requests made for meal to be spicy, I think they mistook salt for spice. Staff are a little too attentive, the minute the last mouthful was swallowed table was cleared, we were offered desert but due to being full we declined and sat finishing drinks, next minute bill was presented, immediately followed with “how are you paying” payment was made and table was cleared in front of us (there was three other tables occupied in the restaurant so not busy at all) felt really rushed to pay and leave, staff kept glancing at us, which places a dampener on the night. Can’t say I will return in a hurry

We went here on Saturday 18th May for my husbands celebration birthday meal with close friends, attentive staff and excellent food made this return visit a true pleasure, Massood’s recommendation on the curry’s was spot on with the description and spices to each of our tastes, and a really nice touch with the complementary tipples to end our evening. Will definitely be returning.

Had a beautiful meal here tonight. Excellent service, staff were amazing! Ordered 2 popadoms and they gave us extra. I asked our waiter, Masood, for a recommendation on which dish to choose out of the selection I picked, and he chose THE best Indian dish I have tasted, the Sagwala tower. Very impressed, will defiantly bring visiting again!

We have visited the Gow many times over the past few years and the standout part is always the service. Your glass is never left to get empty and you are treated like the most important customer they have. Food tastes so freshly made and the decor/presentation is superb. Definitely a great place to visit for a treat or a special occasion.

Brilliant food - chef’s specials all sounded great. The ones we had were excellent. Can’t wait to go there again to try a different one.

We initially had booked a curry at another venue and after they made us wait 30 mins for a table we had pre booked, I decided to call sunar gow and see if they had a table available for 4 at 9.30. Which they had. We arrived and instantly welcomed by a lovely chap, drinks taken, menu choices taken, the same chap offers similar and better alternatives to our meal choices. Which we all agreed with. Food was pronto and it was by far the best curry all 4 of us have ever had! No doubt where we will be going for our next curry. Amazing.

Not been for 10 years and fancied a change to the usual.

We visited for my birthday and it was surprisingly busy for mid week. We were warmly greeted and asked to take a seat in the waiting area and were immediately asked if we would like a drink whilst we waited to be seated.

By far the best curry house I’ve found in the derby area and one of the best I’ve ever been to... and I’ve eaten at a lot.

Our waiter was Mr Masoud, he was so attentive - we were treated like kings & queens! The food was beautiful, fast service too. After our meal we were served with complimentary drinks which was the nicest touch! Definitely coming here again ASAP! This place has it all, great food, great surroundings but most important - GREAT STAFF!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I decided to give it another go and what a mistake that was. The food was bland and there was no difference from a Bhuna to a lamb balti. This place was one of my favourite Indian restaurants but it has become second rate and mediocre. To top it all off it was luke warm on arrival, you are all free to make your own choice but they won’t be seeing any more my money.

Can't fault the food or the service have been coming here for years and is by far the best Indian restaurant around these parts. Excellent

greeted well, party of 10 ,orderd our meal whilst waiting two other tables of 4 came in they were both served drinks and food whilst we still waited,when i asked to see the manager nobody was available to discuss our problem of waiting so long, very poor service.

The food is good - well presented, well cooked and tasty.

Alien material in the food that looks like something from a cleaning brush, and a main course that passes for a starter, pretty poor unfortunately.

We had previously had takeout from here which were good..the order came bang on the hour as promised..we paid our cash (plus a tip) and opened the order..we ordered 3 curries and 3 rice plus other things but only 1 rice in the box.we rang to tell them and were told we only ordered 1 rice and was adamant that we hadnt been charged the other 2..we said we HAD been charged and guy on phone hastily changed his mind and said 2 rice on their way in 15mins..sorry but i thought that a waste... having used this restaurant before they could have done so much more for their customer service (maybe offered free popodoms on next order?)..mistakes happen but how you deal with your customers is the difference between a good restaurant and a bad one and whether you go back or not

Excellent Indian food which, as long as they are not busy, the chef will make individually to your taste. Try to aviod times when they are really busy as things can then take too long to arrive.

Ours was a last minute decision to visit Sunar Gow and we didn't regret it, the food was fantastic and the service was the best ever, I have a dairy Intolerance and the staff were so helpful and didn't make me feel as if I was something to tut about!

It's a couple of years since we last went to the Sunar Gow, which is far too long between visits to this super restaurant. Best Indian in Derbyshire? Quite possibly. In short, service fab, food fantastic, wide choice of a range of Indian food types, starters lovely, pickle tray standard but I loved it, main course to die for.

A must for people who enjoy Indian style cuisine. All prepared on site. Lovely use of herbs absolutely wonderful experience

We went as a group of nine. Service was brilliant! We asked for a selection of starters and I have to say I've never such tender tasty chicken and such a wide selection of starters, cooked to perfection! Everybody tried something different and not one of us was disappointed with our choices. Over the years we have tried many different Indian restaurants, but I don't think we'll be trying any others now! Firm favourite with us all.

Went on a saturday evening with some friends and enjoyed a wonderful meal with top quality service.

Never had a bad takeaway from Sumar Gow yet. Their meat is incredibly tasty and is always fresh and vibrant with taste. The staff are always busy but always take their time with every customer. We certainly wont go anywhere else.

I’ve used this restaurant for many years, however the standards have slipped. I had a takeaway last night, the food was bland and the garlic naan was tasteless. It is with great sadness I write this review as it’s always been one of my favourites.

Have been here many times and took friends for their first visit. Be if our friends doesn't eat spicy/hot food. The waiter was brillIant, he asked what type of food she likes and recommended quite a few Indian/Rajasthani dishes - she loved her meal.

Visited here with friends whilst working in the area. Nice looking restaurant in an old pub. Plenty of staff on hand and a varied menu. We all had starters and mains and was very disappointed. All four of us had different dishes and all four failed to impress. One of the group had a jalfrezi and it didn’t have any spice/heat at all. Travel a little further would be my recommendation.

Myself and my husband decided to try somewhere local to where we live as we didn't want to travel to far.

Never fails to amaze with the food. Never had a bad dish. My personal favourite is the Tawa . Treat yourself. Great service !

We had a good time, the hospitality was superb. I was undecided on the dish I ordered and found it extremely sweet - they immediately noticed and whisked it off to the kitchen for review to my liking. Nothing was too much trouble. So this is why my family goes back time and again - the staff made such a fuss of the kids, who clearly loved every minute and will likely be customers for life.

Had a meal with friends last weekend. Food was ok, nothing amazing. Service, again was just ok. Choice of beer really poor. All in all, just ok.

This was our first visit having heard great things about Sunar Gow. I booked on line for a couple of hours later on a Saturday night, got a confirmation but this do not get through to the restaurant. No biggie as the guys got us a table anyway after a warm welcome. The restaurant was very busy so we expected that we probably wouldn’t be as quick as anticipated. Once ordered, we got our drinks and starters reasonably quickly however we waited over an hour for our main course. I get they were busy however not once did anyone come and apologise for the wait. This really though is my only gripe as the food was truly amazing. Best I’ve had in this area by quite a way so it was unfortunate we waited so long. The waiters were friendly and polite. We will give this another go soon just because of the food and if we hadn’t had such a wait, this would have had 5 stars.
