Sun on the Hill in Birmingham

We went here for lunch yesterday around 2pm and the atmosphere, food and service were amazing. Would definately go here again.

Don't leave your drinks on the bar even if you are standing there. the staff take them then say it's your own fault. Even when they clearly know who's the drinks are. Moody bar maid with glasses is definitely not nice.

Great music during the night but can get really busy that you can't find a table or space in general. Great during the day especially the pick n mix food plates, and if you like terrestrial tv it's on all day and night - I watched Sing and a James Bond film.

A las 8 pm el dj cambió... horrible y autocomplaciente, hombres bailando con el dj a tonterías en consecuencia el lugar se vació. ¡Por favor traigan de vuelta a los djs indie!

Been in this pub a few times many years ago on evenings when it was very lively, and visited today during the day for a quick beer. Nice and clean with a good vibe. Quick and friendly service. Didn't try the food so can't comment on that.

The bar was ok to be fair !! Not to badly priced! But they have the 2 most miserable grumpy bouncers on the door I have ever met!!! I am 54 my husband has mobility issues and we were in Birmingham with our grown up children and partners! Only came in for a rest for my husband!!! Rude bossy and unreasonable!! Not as if it's a top class bar !! Far from! Would not recommend 😕 even if ya desperate! If you are desperate ok for a drink! If you have the energy and mobility move further up the road 😁

I visited this establishment for the first time to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday - The Mezzanine. The finger-food was delicious and the fact that the Mezzanine had its own stocked bar, made it most convenient. The staff were friendly and polite👍🏾 The only negative for me was the music - way too loud for a pub. Conversations flowed but it's not nice having to shout to be heard or to read lips. I would definitely visit again!!! 😉

Mixed feelings about this one - We came with a business client who is local and we had a brilliant time. Staff were friendly, relaxed, helpful, and the place was lively but still good for conversation. We returned a second evening and it was very different. Staff were not at all friendly, even made weird comments, and would much rather sit at the end of the bar with their friends than get up and serve people. The place has great music, some good classics mixed with some fresh new ones that made me feel old but happy. It's clean and has lots of options, but come when it is quieter and staff may be more attentive.

Great atmosphere but I'm afraid I don't remember much more as it was a boozy afternoon with my work family.

Fabulous Sunday Roast. Fresh hot and tasty

At breakfast: The Big English states it's the same as The English but double the amount. Turns out this double amount only happens for the toast, sausages and hash browns, you still only get one bacon, egg, tomato, mushrooms etc.

Went with work for a work lunch food was lovely hot and tasty staff are really helpful and friendly the atmosphere was just right music from the 90s playing in the background food was quick to come so deffo recommend .

If you order a few drinks and leave one on the bar so you can get to your table and come back for it. You expect the bar people to look after it. Not so in this place. Its poor service. They want your money but don't want to deliver the service that you're paying for.

Brilliant door staff, good drinks, cracking music

Went in mid afternoon for something to eat. The guys behind the counter were lovely, the food was quick to arrive and was really nice when it arrived. I've eaten here a few times before and this time was the best. The fried we had were really good. Will definitely go back again.

Sunday Roast Venue was spacious , we was given a private area upstairs just for my group of friends (10 off us) haha. Service was quick and the staff was very friendly. Portion of the Sunday roast was big for me . I had the chicken, but unfortunately - the chicken was too dry for me so I had to ask to get extra gravy.

Came in for brunch with my partner. We had originally gone to the wetherspoons next door but there were no free tables and I'm so glad we went next door to Sun On The Hill. It was moderately busy but we got a table easily and order was taken straight away at the bar. The guy who served me was friendly and served me something off the breakfast menu and my partner something off the lunch menu even tho the lunch menu didn't start for another half an HR, that was very nice of him and it's little things like that that you go away remembering. I ordered the bigger breakfast and my partner had the CBLT. We were amazed how fast the food came out and even more surprised how good it all tasted. The sausages with the breakfast were really good. And the price was good too. Never been here before, would definitely come back!

We came in here just walking past and ended up staying here for a lot longer than expected. It was a Sunday evening and was a nice chilled atmosphere. Nice environment to be in to have a catch up with friends. Towards the end of our night there was an individual bothering us. As a tiny group of women on our own we were in an uncomfortable situation. The staff quickly caught on that we felt quite uncomfortable and made sure everything was okay which we were very thankful for.

Extremely rude bar staff called Charlene. We accidentally dropped some drinks because the glasses were slippery and she was so rude as if we did it on purpose which we would not. I suggest training your staff some manners

I stayed in Bennetts Hill on and off through September and early October, so I needed a handy pub–somewhere to chill, write my journal, and get slightly oiled. I tried the Spoon’s next door, but couldn’t get served, so instead went in the Sun on the Hill, where there were plenty of staff, and they made me feel instantly welcome. Bingo: the Sun was my local. Eat your heart out Briar Rose. It was just the right pub for someone like me. Attractive decor, decent playlist, 4 casks–usually Wye Valley and Purity ales. My favourite was Butty Bach, though that sounds like something you’d ask for in a dark alley. They also do a decent burger, which I noshed a couple of times. Food comes up fast, and they come over to ask you if everything’s all right. (As it happens, one day I also had a burger over the road in Fat Hippo. Slow service, over salty, and dearer. Sorry, Fat Hippo, but clear win to the Sun there. Step over the road and learn.) The Sun is one of those city-centre Jekyll-and-Hyde pubs that’s quiet during the week but goes bananas on Fridays and Saturdays, with a DJ, security, measle lights, pumping music, and dodgy dancing. Even so, its clientele is remarkably mixed and civilised: you get punters of every age in there, from young razzabouts to old codgers like me. Apart from one or two middle-aged, white-T-shirted ex-football-hooligan types dismally gobbing off at the bouncers, the vibe is safe and endearing. Best thing about the Sun, for me, was the staff. I hope the owners know what a bunch of gems they have keeping the show on the road. Luke was a real star, even if he did wear a questionable cap, and made me feel like a personal guest. As did the lovely lady with the tattoos. She showed interest in my journaling and always went out of her way to welcome me and engage. It meant a lot. But all the staff were friendly and kind–including the foxy, dark-haired legend with multiple hairstyles; the dark-haired, bearded legend; the paler-haired pony-tailed man-legend; and the well-spoken blonde legend. I visited lots of pubs and bars round there, and in my opinion this crew are the best bar team in the city centre. Apart from the easy-going vibe they give off, they work really hard–with alertness, skill, stamina, and the diplomacy required to handle a difficult customer with cool. Even when the pub’s quiet, they are working away, keeping the tables cleared and cleaned and organising the bar area. Much love to the Sun on the Hill.

Lovely place, clean and very friendly bar staff. The roast was good and tasty apart from came with no stuffing .. gutted!

Popped in for lunch and enjoyed a chicken burger and chips, the food was hot, tasty and the service was great. Lovely pint of thatchers gold too! They're also part of Independent Birmingham so I got 25% of the bill to boot! Only negative I could possibly find that it was a bit quiet but not surprising early in the week.

Lovely big bar, loads of drink options, we came on a Sunday and the whole place was quite busy as we were here for a concert, we chose here because it looked nice and the interior is very appealing, £40 for 3 light bites and the fully loaded burger and 2 pints which isn't too bad, clean toilets and good food give this place a solid 4 out of 5

Out with work colleagues...we had a few drinks here and ordered some food...did not rate my food. The cibatta bread was rock hard...none of us were really over whelmed with our food...I suppose you pay your money you take your chances. It was more about getting together after work. Nice vibrant atmosphere, music became louder as the evening went on.

The Sunday Roasts were outstanding. Plenty of everything. We added a portion of cauliflower cheese each, but one portion between two would have been plenty. The beer was great. The staff were friendly and attentive. No complaints at all.

Nice Atmosphere stopped for lunch on 29/05/23 had the pulled pork sandwich it was very good sadly was feeling a little ruff after my weekend but it was presented well and the sandwich was really good and the fries where tasty worth a visit.

Had chicken and bacon ceasar salad it was absolutely delicious lovely place not too busy when we were there bout 14.00 hrs would definitely go again. Staff friendly can't say too many good things

Tried this place Saturday 5th May 23 as we pass it everytime we go out on Saturdays so thought we would give it a try, went in around 11pm was quite busy and lively, the bar is quite deceiving from the outside looks tiny but quite surprising when you get inside its quite big great decor and its not full of young kids either so ideal for people wanting to avoid the young age group.

Good selection of drinks, food menu is a little limited, but a good choice for vegetarians. The staff were great and service was good. A little noisy as there are no soft furnishings. There are some seats upstairs but it was hot up there.

Had roast dinner here expecting a nice pub grub dinner and was met with boiled potatoes (not crispy or roasted) and just a mix of vegetables with no stuffing pigs in blanket and all the things which makes a roast dinner nice. Waste of money go elsewhere for your roast dinners as this wasn’t tasty and the meat was tough as old boots..

Visited it today being because briar rose was rammed and no tables so thought I use sun on the hill big mistake empty I wonder why so found out as I was ripped off on the gin plus £1.50 for a splash of lemonade boy what a mistake 😡😡😡

Excellent place in Birmingham. The food is good quality and tasty the skin on fries are particularly good. Lots of lagers as well as a couple of Ales on draught. Good choice of gins and other spirits are available too. Good seating as well as very clean. The staff are brilliant and serve you quickly and are very friendly too. LUKE is a real top chap for sure. Service is second to none in Brum. Certainly a place worth visiting in Birmingham for yourself. Will certainly return having now experienced it for the first time. There is a mezzanine which was not open at the time i was there. It was reserved. Plays music at a good volume so you can have a conversation too.
