Sun Inn in South Lakeland

Lovely meal, beer and fire in a proper Lakeland Pub. Both had steak and ale pie which was great. Sticky Toffee Pudding was excellent. Price reasonable for this area.

The steak pie and gravy was amazing. I think a few more chips would have been nice and a slightly larger portion of peas. The ale supplied was equally delicious.

We always get such a warm welcome here. the food is lovely and service great. It is a very dog friendly place.

Arriving at the Sun Inn, we were greeted by a friendly bar person who made a fuss of our dog, sorted out a blanket for her, and offered her treats (with our permission!). Tasty pub food and respectable wine. This is a traditional country pub, surrounded by lovely woodland and fields. It's worth a walk or cycle ride, especially on a fine early evening in autumn, when you can sit outside to watch the sky darken before heading in to warm yourself by the log fire.

Brilliant pub with excellent menu at very reasonable prices. Easy access to the car park, really friendly staff and top quality food. We took our dogs with us on a Friday night and have to say it was the most dog-friendly pub we've been to with treats available, water bowls and even blankets!! Superb. Followed this up a couple of days later for the Sunday Roast-highly recommend the "trio" of roasts- with the dogs too getting a doggie sunday dinner for £3.00 each. Well worth a visit,fantastic value for money.

Back again. Some more lovely food. We had 3 courses each and everything was good/excellent. Trio of sausages were excellent and my wife loved the lasagne. Staff were very busy but served with a smile and was always very pleasant (one new staff member 26/08 was coping well and always smiling). We have a list of places we always visit when in the area and the Sun Inn at Crook is one that never disappoints. The dessert menu could maybe do with more variety. It’s limited for me as I’m not big on chocolate, cream or custard products. More fruit based products would suit me.

Found this place from Tripadvisor reviews. Warm welcome when we got there, easy parking. Many other establishments closed on a Monday after 6pm! Shown promptly to a table, cheerfully greeted by other diners and their doggos. Given a standard and specials menu, drinks order taken. Food order taken. Great and varied choice of meals and fantastic specials. I went for the pheasant, wild boar and bacon with accompaniments and friend went for steak and ale pie. Both meals were delicious and drinks were good also. A lovely relaxed meal and very very tasty. Service was friendly and appropriate and a check in was made. Would recommend and not hesitate to return - sadly no room for dessert on this occasion! Excellent experience, 5 star. Thanks!

Passed here many times and said we must go, so today was the day to meet a friend. We booked to sit outside and our table was set ready on arrival. They had thoughtfully email me to say we could go inside if the weather wasn't good. Ordered a Sunday lunch and two Cumberland sausage. Both were excellent. Portions aren't huge, but we preferred not to be overfaced and we were all very full. The doggy dinner was an extra bonus and was demolished. Great service from a very attentive waitress. Will definitely be back.

Booked dinner and an overnight parking space for our motorhome. Lovely cosy pub, the staff/owner could not have been more accommodating. Food was good and the whole experience was very pleasurable. Would thoroughly recommend for an overnight stop.

It’s a nice pub restaurant off the beaten track so was able to get a table for Sunday lunch on a bank holiday weekend. Great food and helpful and pleasant staff.

Friday evening and expected to be busy though we did wait 45 minutes for the mains. The cheese and onion pie was very good but one of the specials, seafood tagliatelle, was bland, and I only ate half. However, this was fed back to the waitress and was then knocked off the bill - which was not expected but was the right thing to do. Next time, we will have one of the staples as they did look top notch !

Excellent food and service. They really looked after our party of 6 plus 15 month old child. Highly recommended. Won’t be long before we are back.

We had an amazing roast on Sunday. The best roast that we have ever had in a pub. There was plenty of it too. We've had a fair few roast dinners out in other places, but honestly, the roast at The Sun Inn at Crook Kendal, serves the best roast dinner

Great experience. We were made very welcome with a little blanket for our little Norman to lie on. Service was very efficient and friendly. Atmosphere was very cosy with the log fire. Sunday lunches were delicious and plentiful, and our dog loved his doggy roast too. Would recommend. Booking was very easy via the website.

A group of 12 of us where staying in the local area as a 60th birthday celebration weekend. We had booked the pub a few weeks before and pre ordered our food well we arrived at the pub on the Saturday night to a lovely welcome from the lady who looked after us they had put banners up and balloons what a lovely touch. All the food was lovely fresh and home made and really good portions to they where that good none of us could fit a desert in. The hospitality here was second to none and I would just like to thank you from all of us for a lovely evening.

We spent New Year’s Eve here and it was excellent. The buffet catered for everyone with plenty on offer and hot and cold options with several desserts to choose from too. The music was great and everyone was up dancing. The staff were friendly and worked hard throughout the night. Overall we all had a very enjoyable New Year’s Eve.

I had suggested we eat at the Sun several times so today we did. I have mixed feelings about the food, starters were good mine was the garlic mushrooms was a tad cold when served, heating the plate would have been beneficial, it was nice though and nice sized portion, hubby had the soup he enjoyed it so all good. We ordered Sunday lunch and had both roasts for a £2.50 surcharge, no issue with that, so what's my issue, plates not warmed so food cooled very quickly the sprouts were quite cold, Yorkshire pudding was over cooked a bit burnt, and the roast potatoes hidden beneath over cooked borderline burnt, was hoping for a homemade Yorkshire and I'd be surprised if I am wrong about Yorkshires, now the lady behind the bar was lovely, welcoming and quick to take our order, we also had a dogs roast dinner which helps the dogs trust, thought that was a fabulous idea and our dog loved it, the pub was clean, warm and homely, toilets clean, dog friendly and treats available. Was a nice place but when you pay for food I just need it to be right and reflective of the price paid. So we continue our hunt for the best Lakeland Sunday lunch.

We were a table of 4 for New Year’s Eve. The buffet was excellent and catered for both meat eaters and vegetarian options. Plenty of choice and very tasty food. Everything well organised and all staff worked hard to ensure everyone had a great night. Miss Pearl the singer was fantastic and had everyone dancing. Thank you for a wonderful night.

Very disappointing buffet which was mainly plated meat, quiche, pasta salad with only one type of dessert. Nice singer but no other frills to mark the occasion with cheap decorations. Not worth £40 per head.

I’ve always had a traditional roast diner and always enjoyed it. Served as it should be. Very hot, crispy potatoes and Yorkshire’s. After today’s visit the roast diner was very disappointing. Fried Roast? Soggy Y puds luke warm gravy and meat. And the prices have gone up. Has the lovely Pauline left? Left hungry

Fabulous service, great food and a cosy atmosphere. Nice warm fire. We shared the Camembert starter and I had a fish and chips main. My husband had the venison stew.

Selected as a half way point for meeting up with family that can't meet up at Christmas and extremely disappointed. Lunch menu had an extremely poor choice and was over priced for what you got on your plate. The kids meal had more chips on it than mine did and additional bowls of chips were extortionately priced at £4.50 for a really small portion. I was the second person on our table to order the burger and the waitress replied, oh good that's those two used up! Needless to say we all had puddings as we were still hungry and a sprinkling of oats on top of some fruit was not a fruit crumble. Would not recommend and will not be returning.

Regular visitor, well twice in four years, but the food and service were really good and in a lovely environment.

I took my friend from London to the Sun Inn. The food was delicious, and the service was friendly and efficient. She was vegan and had a roast dinner and I had the lamb roast. There was a roast dinner for dogs on the menu as well. The money from the canine meal went to the dogs trust. This pub is suitable for small groups, couples, families, friends and walkers. It has a cosy atmosphere and it is very laid-back.

Went for Sunday lunch due to recommendations on trip advisor and facebook. I order the beef and my husband had lamb. Food took ages to come and the place was almost empty so don’t understand what the hold up was, staff kept apologising. Food eventually arrived, what a disappointment, the beef was just 2 slices that looked like it came from a pack for sandwiches, totally overcooked, veg was tasteless, potatoes were meh, lamb was also fatty and just not nice. The portion size was rubbish too, never had such a disappointing roast. I wonder why this place is so highly rated, we certainly would never recommend or return.

Booked for Sunday Lunch whilst visiting The Lakes. After a day exploring we were hoping for a hearty roast and this did not disappoint. We had one trio and one beef and both were really tasty. The beef was so tender. Service was excellent and personal. If you’re looking for a good roast and in the area I would highly recommend.

My congratulations to the team who looked after us on arrival in the Lakes & when we visited during our stay in Crook. Their welcome & hospitality was amazing & definitely worth a recommendation. The food was superb - not forgetting the the cellar that was well kept.

Having recently visited the Lakes and stayed in Crook, we visited the Sun Inn for a meal on the Friday we arrived. Excellent deal for 2 Fish & Chips at £32 including a bottle of Prosecco. We also booked for a Sunday meal. The roast was fantastic and the Cumberland Sausage and mash was just as good. The Tirril's Widermere IPA was excellent to wash it all down with. Will defeinitely visit when we are next in the area.

We visited here midweek & we were very glad we did. It's a lovely old Inn with lots of character & had a warm welcome about it. It had a good menu choice and a good selection of specials, very reasonably priced. The staff were very pleasant & accommodating & the service was very good. I opted for the house Burger which was awesome & very filling. My partner had the gammon & he was more than happy. We didn't need to have had even a shared Nachos starter. There was plenty of good wholesome food on our plates. We would recommend The Sun Inn to others ,& we will definitely go back next time we are in the area. .

Well worth the drive/taxi! We got a taxi from Bowness. Hands down the best roast we’ve had in the Lakes. We make sure we visit every year (normally in a big group). Service is also amazing.

Great to sample the Festive Pie at the Sun at the weekend. I’ve been waiting to try the Christmas menu and it didn’t disappoint - turkey and stuffing in a pie with all the trimmings and followed by Christmas pudding.It was absolutely lovely - great tasting food and even a Handsome Blonde on tap - from the local brewery of course! It was also great to eat out again in a safe and secure environment. Booked tables, hand gel, track & trace and all food and beer delivered to your table - you know it couldn’t be a safer place to eat out.We can’t wait to go back and sample the winter menu again.

Called in today(Wednesday 9th December) for lunch and a glass of Red. Both my wife and I opted for the Venison shank with mash and red cabbage. Wow absolutely perfect. A lovely warm welcome on a cold damp day and an open fire to keep us cosy. Thank you. Oh and compliments to the chef.

We booked a table for Friday night, requesting a table by the fire which was honoured which was brill given it meant moving some tables about for us. We had chicken risotto and slow cooked steak; portions were large and extremely tasty with good homemade winter food.Even considering the current Covid restrictions the place had a very welcoming feel and service was amazing, we enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine.We’d travelled by taxi from a local caravan park at a cost of £15 upon hearing the owner/landlady very kindly insisted on running us back to save some money for us; and as she rightly commented the price of taxis can put people off. We were very grateful so thank you, so sorry we didn’t take your name

Went here on a Sunday afternoon after a long lakes walk - and we were ravenous! We were intially disappointed to be told there was no roast left but on saying we had booked, we were told 2 were available (there were 4 of us). So the 2 men had roast beef and I had venison stew whilst my other friend had the braised rump steak. After the intial disapointment, the food was delicious! Roast were huge - with loads of veg and yummy leeks in a sauce.Puddings of bread and butter and sticky toffee were also very good.So - the inital dismay was forgotten by the time we left.But TOP TIP - order your roast in advance to be sure you get it!

Viajábamos desde Wiltshire para quedarnos en Coniston durante una semana. No pudimos entrar a nuestra cabaña hasta las 3 pm, así que decidimos parar para almorzar en The Sun. Qué excelente elección fue esa. Una cálida bienvenida para nosotros y los 2 setters irlandeses, un agradable ambiente hogareño y, teniendo en cuenta las covid restricciones, un menú sorprendentemente largo. Ambos nos decidimos por el estofado de venado con albóndigas de perejil, totalmente delicioso, pero la estrella del día debe ser el budín de caramelo pegajoso, uno de los mejores que he probado en mi vida (¡y he probado bastantes a lo largo de los años!) Gran valor con bebidas por poco menos de 50 para nosotros dos. El pub no está muy lejos del lago Windermere, por lo que para cualquiera que se quede en la zona sería un gran viaje. Es una pena que estén a 4 horas de casa para nosotros, pero definitivamente haremos una parada de nuevo la próxima vez que vayamos a Lakeland.

We went to the Sun Inn for an evening meal whilst staying near Bowness on Windermere. The lady who welcomed us was really friendly and helpful, their choice of food and drink was excellent and good value for money. Would I go again? Yes 100%.

A very warm welcome from all staff and our dog was showered with treats and her own warm rug to lie on. We didn’t eat but the food looked and smelt really good. Would definitely return for a meal.

Tuvimos una comida realmente encantadora aquí y sin duda volveré. Estábamos buscando un bar / restaurante que admita perros y este lugar no nos decepcionó. Tres comidas diferentes ordenadas y todas deliciosas. La mejor noticia que escuchamos fue que hicieron una "cena para perros", se sirvió en un plato para perros y fue el almuerzo dominical más atractivo para perros. Excelente relación calidad-precio y un ambiente encantador. También conocí a gente estupenda. Lo recomiendo encarecidamente y volveremos.

Nos alojamos en nuestra casa rodante, nos hizo sentir muy bienvenidos. Tomé una pinta al llegar sentado afuera después de un paseo de perros recomendado por nuestro anfitrión. Reservamos para cenar, la comida era fantástica, el ambiente estaba a tope, a pesar de todas las medidas covid en su lugar. El servicio fue perfecto. Recomiendo encarecidamente una visita. Llegué a última hora de la tarde medio esperando que no hubiera espacio para nosotros, pero nos encontraron una mesa para 2. Todo el distanciamiento social se cumple estrictamente y aun así el servicio fue sobresaliente. La comida era maravillosa. Comí el bistec de jamón más grande que he visto en mi vida y mi prometido comió el curry de la casa, una pequeña madras picante llena de sabor. Nuestras bebidas se servían muy frías, como me gusta mi cerveza, y el precio era muy razonable. Definitivamente regresaremos, pero estoy ordenando la cena asada para que no se acaben.

Almorcé aquí en un día de Lakeland ligeramente húmedo, y tanto la comida como la bebida eran muy buenas. Tuve el curry de la casa, que resultó ser un pollo Korma, pero, a diferencia de muchos Korma's, estaba absolutamente lleno de sabor, y ella tenía una pequeña porción del jamón que también estaba bueno, y ambos estaban regados con un buen cuidado. cerveza. Cuando queremos una comida especial de fin de semana con amigos, siempre venimos aquí y nunca nos ha decepcionado. Nuestro favorito es el jamón y el huevo. Otros dos amigos y yo pasamos de camino a casa aquí para almorzar absolutamente hambrientos de acampar el fin de semana en los lagos.La carne asada del domingo fue uno de los peores que he probado.La carne estaba grasosa y tan masticable que ni siquiera podías tragar. correctamente en caso de que te ahogues. se describió como una cena con todos los adornos, era literalmente un pudín de Yorkshire empapado y poco cocido, col rizada y zanahorias y dos asados casi todos los adornos. Los botes de salsa se enviaron solo dos y tuvimos tres cenas esperando un bote cada uno para la cena y el precio y la mujer a la que pedimos más salsa dijo que eso era lo que obtenías, lo cual no tenía sentido, pero yo le pedí más salsa, que luego ella Acabo de ver que más clientes dejaran nuestras cenas casi frías antes de que tuviéramos más salsa. Luego tuve la audacia de cobrar tres libras extra en el plato de chapuzón ya caro que nos sirvieron. No volveré de nuevo, eso es seguro. !

During a recent visit to Staveley we visited the Sun Inn for evening meal. It is a beautiful pub and the food was super tasty! We took our big dog with us and he was very welcome. Would definitely recommend.

My partner and I took advantage of the last day of the “Eat out to help out” scheme to dine at The Sun Inn on the August Bank Holiday. Service was prompt and efficient and the reasonably priced lamb shank was to die for. My slight criticism would be at the choice of rhubarb as a seasonal fruit for the crumble and the unusual topping. Tasty, and different though.

We came across this lovely pub with amazing food last December. Yesterday was our first trip out for a meal together since before covid, and we decided to make it special by coming back to this place.Unfortunately it did not live up to our last visits. The service was friendly and considerate of social distancing, but it still felt a little lacking. Our server seemed to be quite flustered, even though the pub was empty when we arrived. The food was not what we remember at all. It was just your standard pub fare, nothing too special. The best part of the meal would have to be the cheesecake, which looked like it came pre packed, not made in house. The nachos were not great (sliced cheese on nachos? Really?) and the steak and lamb shank were average. Hopefully our next visit is better.

A bit of a late review for our visit on 12th August. We were a table of 5 seated in the main dining area. For a small pub, the social distancing measures were excellent. The food was a wonderful as ever and Pauline and her staff welcoming and friendly. It's always more than worth the short drive out of Bowness. After dinner we sat outside in peaceful countryside. A lovely evening. We'll be back!

Visited during our stay in Staveley having prebooked a table during Eat Out to Help Out scheme. Menu limited Due to Covid but still plenty of choice and something for everyone. I had scampi and it was beautiful, burgers and steaks went down a treat. The puddings were delicious especially the cheesecake with ginger and fruit crumbles with custard. Chocolate orange ice cream was a hit too. Lovely busy country pub and staff work hard. Landlady Pauline fortunately kept our table for us as we were slightly delayed due to not being able to get a taxi because of a serious accident closing the main road. We did two trips in one car to get there in time before the kitchen closed and Pauline very kindly offered to take half of us back to our cottage in her car after our meal which saved us a long wait and taxi fare. Now that is something else! Thankyou again! Would highly recommend the Sun Inn for the food and service and really enjoyed our visit.

A friendly and comfortable atmosphere with good beer and great food. Staff were very attentive and food was very prompt. Will be coming back.

Amazing Sunday Roast!The best I’ve ever had whilst eating out. Everything on the plate was delicious, all home made to a very high standard. I had a small roast and struggled to eat it all. I tried two of the local ales which were equally delicious. The landlady made us feel very welcome and was very friendly and attentive. We will definitely call here again on our next visit to The Lakes.

Visited the Sun Inn twice while staying in Crook with my family for a week. The first meal went well couldn’t fault anything at all. The second visit was completely different, although the menu was limited due to Covid 19, they had managed to run out of steak by 6:30pm, no French fries to go with the steak burgers we ordered, burger was under cooked in the middle. My son enjoyed his Gammon & egg. Shame the overall service wasn’t as good as our first visit.

lemonade was flat. over priced for where the pub is. owner was rude and not friendly at all. the girl behind the bar doesn’t know how to pull a pint. maybe was a bad day but i don’t recommend at all.

Stayed in a cottage down the road and was delighted to find this pub on the doorstep. Live music with Fiona on our first night and then a great meal on our second. Well organised with covid in mind but warm and welcoming none the less. Lasagne was delicious and if you like spice my husband would definitely recommend the jerk chicken.

Lovely place with fantastic staff. Dog friendly so we brought our two along with us as we were camping up the road.Food was fantastic had the beef curry and the beef was so tender and well cooked not a fatty grizzly bit in site. My other half had a homemade steak burger and enjoyed it just as much10/10

Went on Saturday 1st August when we were on holiday in Kendal. I emailed for kids options and got a reply very promptly from Pauline which was much appreciated. Loved the menus up on the walls everywhere, a nice touch (and especially good at the moment... ) . I had the cheeseburger which was HUGE and tasty. My husband got the lamb curry which he enjoyed. The kids got macaroni bites and chips and chicken nuggets and chips and both got a big thumbs up from them. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to families and would go again if holidaying in Kendal. Staff were all lovely and friendly too.

Booked here for a meal whilst staying at a local campsite! Made to feel welcome with our dog although it was very busy and it was noted that people were waiting for our table this was after just one hour. The food was all delicious though gammon, scampi and burger followed by lovely ice cream. Would defo recommend and would return. Shame there was only fosters lager available but understand that during the current covid situation businesses are struggling.

Great food and plenty of it with a good chouce. Lovely, well kept pale ale. Friendly, helpful and well informed staff.

My sister and I took a much needed break in the South Lakes this weekend. We booked The Sun Inn online and chose it as a good choice for dog friendly dining. Unfortunately having set off from our hotel near Bowness, google maps sent up in the direction of Crooklands rather than Crook. On arrival at the former and realising the error, we rang the pub to apologise and explain we were on our way and where we were. This was at 7.35. The table was booked for 7.45. In response, the owner abruptly said we would be too late and would not be served after 8pm! As it was we pulled up outside at 8.04pm. Obviously after such a frosty and unhelpful response we drove on. And as well we did, we had a fabulous meal at THE WILD BOAR nearby.! The staff were extremely professional and welcoming, they accommodated us (safely)and served the best food we have had in a long while. The menu is interesting, varied and superb quality. During these tough times, effort,adaptability and a willingness to help should be the mantra for the hospitality industry...Sun Inn take note.

Stayed in my Motorhome on the car park which was very uneven but manageable.The building is an old world typical cosy lakes pub with open fires, superbly run by Pauline, who is very efficient and friendly.The food was excellent and the portions huge.We were lucky to be there on a Friday, when there was a singer ‘Fiona’, to entertain us in the beer garden- altogether a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

All our meals were delicious, super friendly staff and overall great service. Would definitely recommend. Thank you for the experience.

A lovely lunch stop after playing golf at Beckside Golf Club. Lovely service, food and beer. We will be back!

Fantastic burgers, but all the food we had was good, including desserts. Excellent service and great precautions in place for covid. Can't wait to back. Plenty of parking too.

Stopped in group for couple of drinks and 1 of us a meal. Cask Beers excellent, went down a treat. Great friendly welcome, great atmosphere not spoiled by social distancing rules. Good large car park at the end of the row of cottages before the pub (if heading towards Bowness). Really enjoyed the stop - will be back.

Popped in whilst camping nearby and i can honestly say was a lovelly welcome and a nice experience.. Foid was good real ales was good and pauline the landlady made us feel very welcome especially our puppy staffie eddie. Highly recommended and thankyou for the lift back to campsite the pup was most appriciative

Tried getting into a few pubs in Bowness but unfortunately we were unlucky as we hadn’t booked, driving back towards home with my guests I remembered there was a pub at the top of the hill, went on & yes there was room, they had a limited menu which would in my opinion served as a decent enough menu in normal circumstances, the three of us had different meals & I have to say the food was cracking! Came out hot & fresh cooked, the jerk chicken had a 3 chilli eating & yep it was! Dessert was also very good & the hospitality that was shown to us was great too! Thanks for a great meal, we left feeling rather full up!

A lovely old building in a beautiful country location. Quaint interior and really good quality and good value food and a reasonable range of drinks. Highly recommended.

Lovely to enjoy a pie chips and a couple of pints. Hope to enjoy in the pub proper soon when lockdown allows.

Lovely old pub. Popped in with my sons who love beer. Not good. Lots of people eating in another room but the bar lacked atmosphere (and customers). Left without finishing our drinks. The food may be good though...

A hidden gem situated on a scenic road. The food is lovely and it's great to have a nice drink sat in front of the fire. Would go again.
