It is 3 years since I last reviewed this restaurant. However, although we have been attending here on a regular basis since then, the establishment has new owners and new staff and I thought it would be worth an update to interested persons considering going here for a meal or a celebratory event. I mentioned some time ago that the food was good but the service was poor under the previous owners. However, there are new owners and staff here now and they have been in place for some months and have had time to settle in to their way of dealing with customers etc. The menu is more complicated to read than just a 'menu', there are too many options available and after a while it gets difficult to read and there is a tendency to rush one's order and stick to the tried and tested standard foods. The atmosphere is pretty much the same as previously and would suit couples or groups although there is a tendency to place some tables too close to other tables and one can struggle to get in/out sometimes. Therefore be selective where you sit. The service is relatively quick with most members of staff but somewhat slow in delivering the orders back to the table and they have to be reminded..."where is our meal please ?" Having said that, if you choose to study their menu you will find it makes interesting reading with a greater variety of foods on offer, even if it's not easy to follow because of the way it is set out. Nevertheless, we still go here about once a month and we know what we want to eat in advance of arriving there, so we don't concern ourselves with reading what's on offer on each occasion. Shame about the slow service, perhaps when they read this review they will wake up.

We visited the Summer Palace for a special birthday for our grandchildren. There were 8 of us in total. We had to wait for our table which didn't get us off to a good start. We waited to be served we waited for drinks in fact we waited and waited! We arrived at the restaurant at 7.30 and left at 12.45. This was an exceptional amount of time to wait and complete a meal. We were patrons in the Bramhall restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the cuisine but because we had to wait so long for our food most of us had gone past it. Having said that the food is really good.

Stumbled upon this restaurant after finding out that the Chinese we usually go to has closed. Will never go anywhere but here now! Our food was delicious and the service was outstanding. I asked the server whether the meal I was ordering was very spicy and his response was 'I will ask them to keep it mild for you' which is perfect as it sounded tasty but I don't do spice! Absolutely amazing thank you so much!

We visited the Peking Garden on the 9th April in a party of six. Been several times before. The food is always excellent but the service was very bad this time. It took several askings to get drinks, and when they came they were wrong. Waited ages for the starter, and the same for the main meal. Plates were cold by the time the meals arrived and the meals did not arrive at the same time. Meals arrived over a period of ten minutes. Trouble is the chef is excellent. Excellent food, let down by poor service. Plenty of staff but no coordination!!!!

We arrived at the restaurant at about 7.00pm and showed to an area of the restaurant that was in darkness and no 'set tables'. The lights were switched on and we were given menus. We ordered drinks and the starters. These took a while to come but the restaurant was busy and so we waited. At 8.30 we still hadn't got our main course or the drinks that we ordered when they took away the starter plates. At 8.50 we told them that if the food hadn't arrived at the table within 5 minutes we were leaving. We had to ask for serviettes, twice for drinks, we had numerous lots of food and drink bought to our table that just wasn't ours; the staff were wandering around with drinks and food not really knowing what they were doing or which table they were going to. All in all very very poor service. When we asked to speak to the manager he wasn't available. We weren't the only people complaining, several tables around us were also issuing ultimatums. We will not be repeating our visit to this restaurant.

Have been going to Summer Palace as it was called for many years so was a little nervous when I was it had changed its name but I need not have worried, I can only say that the meal was absolutely delicious, as good as ever. I rate this restaurant to of the tree for Chinese food.Raymond is the Manager and he is great and ensured that all the staff really looked after us. The restaurant has been opened up inside with the partitioning removed which is better and was beautifully decorated for Christmas creating a good atmosphere. One change that was disappointing to me - we always used to tip the water/waitress who looked after our table but now they have added a mandatory service charge to the bill. So sorry waitresses we will no be leaving you the tip. Just a niggle of mine as I like to treat those that look after us.Well worth a visit and we will certainly going back and taking my elderly Mum as she loves Chinese food.

This restaurant had changed its name to Peking Garden and is under new management so we decided to give it a try and booked a table three days in advance for Friday evening. On arrival there were no tables available and we had to wait 30 minutes to be seated. Having been given a menu whilst waiting we still had to wait another 15 minutes to place our order so by the time our first course was served we had been there over one hour. The food however was very good and plentiful. When we received the bill a 15 percent service charge had been added which was an insult with the service we received. If this restaurant want to attract repeat custom they need to greatly improve their service and leave the service charge to customers discretion. We will not be going back.

having enjoyed eating in this restaurant in the past and noticing they now do deliveries we decided to order a takeaway. Last time we went was about a year ago and it was good, I don't know what's changed but tonight it was not good. The delivery was quite quick but it cost about £15 more than other takeaways we use for the same things we always order, then when dishing it out we found the order was wrong. My husband phoned to tell them and they returned with the missing items and took the wrong one away, asking for the price difference of another £6! We paid it reluctantly and ate what we could. The food was not as good as it used to be, the ribs were poor, not much meat but loads of fat and sinew on the ones I tried, the rest of it was edible. All things considered would I eat from here again? Not a chance, I can get much nicer food for a lot cheaper with the right food delivered in the first place.

We have been coming to summer palace for a few months now. If you want good food then summer palace provides that. The food is a bit pricey but it is often worth it in size. We recommend the vermicelli extra spicy or the OK king prawns. Delightful. Just make sure you have it catered to your particular taste buds, they are more than willing to oblige, if you are fortunate to get the right member of staff.Speaking of staff... The staff here are absolutely terrible, they are absolutely atrocious. Like the review below they don't even understand Engare, to make matters worse they treat you as if you are the one that doesn't understand. Rude and a horrible attitude. However there is one waiter here who is an absolute gem! James? Jason? or John? It began with a J, He is the waiter with glasses. We have been in with children before and on other occasions with adult friends. He serves and waits on you like royalty. On some occasions we see him offering an arm for the older ladies. What a gentleman! He understands English and is very welcoming and friendly, which can't be said for the others, one of which is wearing jeans and boots, he often looks lost daydreaming, the owner should take more time training his staff. There is an old woman that looks dreadful and every time we come in she us pestering us for drinks and our order when we had only just sat down and not even had time to open our menus! If it is quality food you want then you will find it here. If it is service then you should look elsewhere unless you are lucky enough to be served by the good waiter. It's a big risk, either really good service from him, or terrible service from the others. It is hot or miss. Usually the woman taking our order gets it wrong and we have to send our food back, causing us to have to wait for our food to be redone and our other dishes to go cold. Avoid her like the plague!!!Message to the owner: replace your terrible staff and keep the good ones that understand and can speak English. The food and service is the only thing that kept this review from being a 1star review...

I've known and visited this place for 20 years.Originally, the food was about the best Chinese food you'd have, fresh, well cooked, very good staff.A couple of years so, they changed the name to Wang's, and God was it awful. That can't have gone well, as they changed the name back, and it improved for a while. The last couple of times I've been in, once to have a meal, once for a takeaway, it's been poor on almost every level. The staff are now really pretty boisterous with you, they look a bit disheveled and careless. I don't mind that, but this place is expensive. Two main course, one rice and prawn crackers for takeaway, was £26! It was so expensive to eat in, I just wouldn't go again. The food ranges from OK, old fashioned Chinese fayre, to that kind of red melted jelly stuff as a sauce. That was what I got with Cantonese steak, flooding some badly cooked bits of flesh. It's the kind of thing you get in a Chinese banquet, though not a £5 a head. More like £30.It's a shame, I honestly think people are still going because of its prominent location and previous rep. There are much better, much cheaper places to go.

We waited 45 mins for our first drink, and by midnight we had only just received our main course so it somewhat spoilt celebrating new year having to stop and then eat. We finally left the place at 1.15am having been there since 9pm!!I was told the place was taken over recently so all I can say is bring back the previous owners. The staff even had the nerve to add £35 service charge and 'forgot' to take off the deposits we had paid. I have been a patron of the summer Palace from the day it 1st opened and it is on my door step. There was a party of eight of us for New Years eve and we had booked for the 9pm sitting. When we arrived there was a huge queue and we had to wait outside. When our table became available we sat down at a table that was only meant to seat 6 people and we had very little space or leg room. Our coats had not been taken off us and we just knew this was not going to go well. On the positive side the food was, as always brilliant, could not fault it at all. what let it all down was the service, which is a shame because its always been fantastic. For the 1st sitting it was obvious there were too many people, and they had put many, many more tables in than usual. The time in between in each course was ridiculous, we had to keep on asking about out drinks when we had waited well over 15 mins. At midnight we had just started our main course after being there for 3 hours. It has been decorated and looks good but the new owner should look very carefully at staffing levels and the deterioration of service. All in all we had an excellent night but could have been better which I hope the new owners address. The summer Palace has always had a fantastic reputation, and I would hope this would continue.

The younger girl - Tracy, is a pleasure and if she serves you, you actually get a far better experience. We only get given 1 hot plate between 4 of us and I always ask for another. I once asked if the candle could be lit and I was told yes but you have to ask! The food in our view is lovely - it is fresh, tasty and well cooked. However, the terrible service, attitude from staff and general decor is a let down. We like to support our local restaurants and this is within walking distance from our house, but we are getting to the point that good food is no use without a fair service. The staff seem like they do not want to be there, they rush you in and out and are very abrupt with their service. The hot plates are rarely hot and the plates generally cold, the food arrives at different times. The decor badly needs some attention and as others have commented the carpet needs a clean. So good foo but that is where it stops.

The quality depends on what you order and what particular tastes you have.We have had very greasy spare ribs which is a shame because the Duck in Orange sauce is good quality duck

We like eating here as the portions are generous and very tasty. The staff are so welcoming and friendly too. The crispy duck is divine. No nasty gloopy sauces.

We have had several family parties at Mr Lee's restaurant in the past. We haven't been for a while as it went out of Mr Lee's ownership for a while. Now back with the original owner, the food and service has returned to it's old good standards, and we shall be using it regularly.

Having not been to the restaurant for some time and looking at some of the negative reviews here on TA, we were pleasantly surprised. It was a very busy Saturday evening but the service was excellent ....and with a smile! The food was very nice and we thought good value for money compared with other Chinese restaurants we had been to recently. There was a good selection to choose from on the menu from starters to the mains and a nice selection of Beers & Wines. So Yes we will return!

We have visited this restaurant many times in the last 25 years, and although the food is always excellent, there can sometimes be occasional poor service. The cost of the meals are probably a little more expensive than other Chinese Restaurants but on balance it is still worth a visit to enjoy a variety of cuisine. There is a good selection on the menu and some of the set meals/banquets can be expensive. It certainly is a popular place and always seems to be busy when we call there. The occasional poor service has not stopped us going there.

We have lived very close to this restaurant for the past 16 years and had never been, it has dark windows and always looked empty when we passed it so we thought it wasn't popular. Some friends told us they had been and they enjoyed it so we decided to try it last night, we we're very pleasantly surprised, it was really busy and we were lucky to get a table. The service was good and fast but not rushed, we were able to take our time and didn't feel pressured to hurry up. The food was excellent and all the staff were friendly and helpful. We will definately go again.

After visiting this "restaurant" a few times over the last couple of months, I've come to the opinion if you have a nice meal you're lucky, I have had one or 2 dishes that were ok but generally I have to say the food is worse than some takeaways and expensive for what you get.Last night I had a beef and bean sprouts in oyster sauce without MSG and it was a tasteless slimy mess, my wife had chow mein without MSG and she liked it.I get the impression the staff don't care whether you enjoy your evening or not, they're too busy talking to each other. The carpet is filthy and the general appearance is tired and dated.

Previous reviews seem very unfair in my opinion, we spent a fabulous evening here for my birthday and we couldn't have been better looked after. The staff were incredibly attentive to us and our children, making sure everything was perfect. The food was gorgeous and fairly reasonably priced. They must be doing something right as the restaurant was packed, so I would recommend booking in advance. Thank you summer palace for making my birthday a memorable one.

Visited with 2 friends on a vague recommendation from a colleague. From the moment we arrived we found the staff to be most unfriendly. The decor is very tired and outdated - we felt we had stepped back to the eighties! Good selection on menu but we were most disappointed with the food and could honestly have had better from our local takeaway! Needless to say, will not be returning.

After reading the other reviews, we went to the Summer Palace with some trepidation. We'd been several times before, but not for the last 12 months or so and were worried that it had gone downhill. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the atmosphere was good, and the staff as welcoming as ever. After the usual prawn crackers, four of us then shared three lettuce wrap starters, along with a really large plate of spare ribs (not fatty, and very meaty). We then had four generous main dishes with three fried rice and a plate of soft noodles - all hot and tasty. There followed complimentary melon and orange slices. The full bill was £92, including a bottle of (non-house) wine, tonic water, and four pints of beer. We certainly didn't think this excessive.Service is attentive and quick, but we never rushed. In fact, we were even asked if we wanted a longer rest between the courses if we felt too full. We will certainly go back.

We visited the Summer Palace recently for a family event - I hadn't been there for twenty years or so. I won't be going back. The starters were ok - the usual platter of prawn toast, ribs, seaweed etc and the crispy duck and pancakes was acceptable enough. However, the whole meal took a major downturn when the main courses arrived. I had ordered the 'spicy' szechuan style beef and it looked awful from the start. A grey and brown soupy mess that looked as though it was a thin broth that had a little bit of meat and some vegetables floating in it. It was so bland that it was unpleasant to eat and I left most of it - which is very rare for me, I usually try to clear my plate. Another of our party had a supposedly spicier mixed meat dish which - if possible - was even more bland than mine. I agree with another reviewer - how they can mix the ingredients to come out with absolutely no taste whatsoever takes some talent!!!We also asked for a mild chicken curry for a child in our party and - ironically! - that was the spiciest dish of all and too spicy for the child to eat (and they are used to mild Indian curries). Most of the staff made some sort of an effort but it was off-putting to see one of the waiters stood by the till digging around his mouth with a toothpick before coming over to serve. And to top off the evening, the bill was pretty high and more than we would normally expect to pay for a Chinese. Our local takeaway does a MUCH tastier meal for a fraction of the cost. We'll be sticking with them in future.Never again.

Live in the area and never been, so we thought that we would give it a go - big mistake! Distinctly average food - the yung cheow fried rice had that awful cubed plastic ham in it which is appalling for a restaurant. The dishes we had were barely ok but the Kung Po needed more spice and the special chow mein was very bland. We had the "crispy" duck pancakes to start with and I swear that the duck had been cooked at least a few days before, it was very dry and did not taste fresh (Sainsburys do better in a ready meal!).To cap it all, I nearly fainted when my pre-food aperitif of vodka and tonic was charged at £7.10! I don't recall asking for a double or maybe that was the single price. The only good point was that the service was very good from the young people, a bit po faced by the older ones.We have two local takeaways that do better for less - never again

I first visited this restaurant in the mid 1990s and it always remained in my memory as a decent Chinese restaurant. A recent family gathering led to the suggestion that we should try the Summer Palace and I readily agreed following my distant experience. The starters arrived and visually looked fine with the standout morsel being the Prawn Toast. But the sampling revealed a different story of sandwiched between greasy bread and sesame seeds lay a pink infill of tasteless paste which not unpleasant but incredibly bland. The salt/pepper ribs were fatty and the samosas had been carefully arranged to hide their burnt underside. The main courses were no better and although well cooked they were laden with MSG, looked very grey in appearance but there was simply no flavour. How a chef can combine so many ingredients and then neutralise the complimantary flavours into such a bland amalgam is beyond me? The staff were friendly and attentive, the wine list comprehensive, the venue accessible but with dated decor and lifeless dull undistinctive food my next visit will be at least another 15 years.

I have visited here several times eating in and take away when it was known as Wangs. I always found food really excellent and very good quality. Sadly this now is not the case. The quality of the food has declined. I ordered a takeaway with salt and pepper ribs which were excellent on previous vists - now very fatty. Sweet and sour was served in a paper container. Meats very dry and tasteless. The sweet and sour sauce was that, just sauce very few peppers or pineapple. My favourite of Cantonese chicken was watery and tasteless. It was a real disappointment and not cheap for a takeaway costing £24. I'm not sure what the proprietors are doing - cutting corners ?? which long term is a recipe for disaster

Unfortunately I judge all Chinese restaurants/take-aways with a very critical pallate having tried the ultimate in Chinese cuisine whilst working in Australia in the early eighties. The in-house Chinese restaurant at 'Cronulla Sharks Club' served food to die for. I have never tasted anything as sublime since. Consequently that's the yardstick I use when comparing Chinise food in this country and as yet I have found nothing to impress me. The Summer Palace is very expensive - something I have never understood when comparing the cost of eating in an Indian restaurant - and the food is bland in taste probably because they've suppressed the monosodium-glutomate which is a good thing but should be compensated for in other healthier ways. My recent experience there has convinced me to buy a Ken Hom DVD and wok and learn to cook Chinese food myself. N.B: The salt and pepper spare ribs - a particular favorite of mine - were greasy and fat which added to the disappointment.
