Absolutely fabulous food. 4th time we have had food here and great every time. Looking forward to our next visit which may be very soon. I love it that the main dishes come with different flavours of rice and bread.

Had an amazing curry in a friendly and arm atmosphere. I would recommend this. Enjoy the Haryali Pyazee, amazing. My wife enjoyed Tsndoori Jhinga

Great hospitality from Raj and family at the Sultan last night. Table booked for 8.30pm on a lovely evening so we sat outside for a drink and a look at the menu. The service was great and our hosts were so friendly. We had the calamari to start with poppadoms and dips followed by the two prawn dishes. Both dishes were well presented and delicious. Great location for a Friday date night and with the added bonus you can pop to Carpenters/Huntsman for a drink before or after 😁

Lovely little Indian restaurant thoroughly enjoyed our meal we shared onion bhaji and then had 2 of their specials and a garlic naan which were lovely ..very generous portions and could not fault.

Great vegetarian curry last night! Ate far too much! Though had a very generous glass of a nice Sauvignon Blanc to wash it down, so can't complain. I'd thoroughly recommend a night out. Very pretty pub with immaculately clean restaurant too.

Lovely night out with the ladies from the village, wonderful food, great atmosphere and fabulous food. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

Nestled in a little village this gem of a restaurant sits. A friendly welcome once again greeted us. With amazing food made by Raj to once again tempt our tastebuds! This is a must for any Indian cuisine lovers…

We were here earlier this evening and couldn't wait to get home and write this review. The lamb chops starter and chicken tikka were outstanding. We had a chicken special and a specially requested king prawn dhansak both of which were exceptional. Accompanying Peshwari Naan and a light, flaky puri completed a delectable meal. The welcome and service was great, despite being increasingly busy as the evening wore on. Cold Cobra and a jug of water were delivered to our table promptly. Not sure about desserts or coffee, we weren't really offered and decided not to bother - but left repleat and will be back very soon.

So nice to have a lovely Indian restaurant close to home. An imaginative menu with a few old favourites but coming here I got my taste buds tickled in a refreshing way so chose dishes I had not seen on a traditional menu before. Beautifully presented down she’s by charming staff. A real family affair. Will be back for more!

We visited Raj at his new restaurant having known him from his previous business in Penhow. We were greeted by both Raj and his wife and after some drinks, ordered our food from his new menu. Every dish from the starter to the main course was excellent and the house specials were very different and tasty. We will now look forward to a revisit in the near future and wish him all the best in his new venture.

We took some friends on a Wednesday evening and were surprised that there were a number of other diners there - mid-week in a village in South Wales someway off the beaten track is a tall order for most. This is a family-run business and they provide a friendly, almost homely, atmosphere. Most importantly, the food is excellent. The menu caters for all tastes and interests, including the adventurous. It is probably the use of spices that makes the dishes stand out from the crowd. And, the prices are reasonable enough. Well worth a try, if you haven't already.

Superb food, well presented , dietary requirements dealt with and nothing was too much trouble . This will not be our last visit !

Not impressed, sauce watery and not good flavour . Well done for trying to resurrect this old pub , but we will go to Chepstow next time for our take away .

Stopped in for a last minute supper to try it out. We were really blown away by how delicious it was. This is not your usual chicken tikka masala type Indian. Amazing king prawn starter followed by Catch of the Day (whole sea bass in a beautifully rich tomato sauce). Delicious. We’ll be back.

Four of us has dinner at the Sultan last night and we’re blown away by the excellent food. All dishes were fantastic and out of the ordinary! This is no run of the mill Indian restaurant (although you can still find your standard korma if that’s your thing) Tandoori prawns with a seafood rice accompaniment was delicious; lamb shank amazing; chicken skewers tender and massive! The lamb chops starter was also delicious. All the staff were attentive and really friendly. We can’t wait to go back.

Fabulous, delicious food as always and a great evening had by us all. A must visit restaurant, where you are greeted with a friendly and warm welcome. Can’t wait to go back!

Wow. We visited for the first time last night and was not disappointed. Food and service was excellent. We had a personal recommendation from the chef/owner and it was clear he and his team take great pride in what they do. Poppadoms and chutney tray were fresh and tasty. Lamb chop starter was probably the best i've had. Wife had the Tandoori Paneer which she described as beautiful. For main i had the Tava Gusht. So good. The lamb fell apart and packed with vegetables. I asked for it to be quite spicy and it was just right. A great dish. My wife had the Bengol Masala Prawns which she loved. The prawns were plentiful and frankly huge. Bindi side dish also very good. The other thing we noted was the very generous portions. Couldn't eat it all and took some home. You can go anywhere and have a curry, but if you want Indian food at it's best then a visit here would be absolutely recommended. We'll be back.

Having spotted this new restaurant whilst driving through Shirenewton, we quickly booked a table. We were warmly welcomed and the service throughout the evening was friendly and attentive. The lady who was heading the service was especially helpful and kind. The food was exceptional, certainly not your standard Indian cuisine. I would say authentic and a home cooked style. It was one of the best meals I had experienced in a long time. We are already planning a return trip, and I would not hesitate in recommending this restaurant.

We’ve had a number of takeaways from this recently opened restaurant, and they have been lovely. Saturday night was the 1st time we had eaten at the restaurant, and we’re already planning our next trip. Their menu isn’t your usual Indian menu, this is wonderfully different. The service was excellent, the food was superb. The prices are very reasonable too. Book a table today, you’ll not be disappointed.

We were so looking forward to trying Sultan. There are a few poor reviews on Facebook, however we like to make our own minds up. We ordered a takeaway, the only positives were that it was ready on time and the staff are friendly and polite. It is without a doubt the worst Indian food I have every experienced. The mutton (supposed to be lamb) was hard and dry, it was not cooked appropriately with a bland sauce. Likewise with the chicken, very dry in a watery sauce that was very hot but had no other flavour. This is not typical 'British Indian Restaurant' or 'Authentic'. We have eaten both styles extensively. If you are local and appreciate the quality of Mango House, Sitar, Indian Empire, Tamarind etc you will not enjoy this place. We appreciate how hard it is for the hospitality sector in the current economic climate and try to support local independent businesses. Such as shame as it could be an absolute gem that we would use regularly as it's just a couple of miles away.

Hoping this new venture is still in start-up mode as this wasn't great. Second try of this restaurant. This time as a take out. First visit was 2 weeks after opening. What we had was really nice. The downside was the 90 minute wait for the food to appear. Tried a takeaway tonight. Food was ready bang on time, but it was an early order. My sauce was watery, the overall dish was ok, but that's it. My naan bread was under cooked and oily. My wife's dish was, as she put it, "not bad, but not as nice as the one I get from xxxxxx (the rival up the road, which is also cheaper) It's great to have the TA occupied again, I hope they are successful, but I'm sorry to say, my two initial encounters have me jumping in the car to Chepstow.

We really enjoyed our meal in very elegant surroundings. I liked the fact you could pay a bit more for the house specials , a cut above, but still maintained the 'old reliables'. Loved the elephant! Jean and Keith
