Stopped here for lunch. Had the hash and ‘best bacon sandwich’. The hash included an egg that was absolutely stone cold on serving. The bacon sandwich was ‘mid’ and definitely no £10 of food whether in portion size or quality. To be fair, they did take a little off the bill for the cold food, although less than the service charge. On the plus side, the coffee was really nice. Maybe stick to coffee and cake if visiting.

I was in Brighton for the day and had the ‘three times fried’ chips, which were delicious. When I went up to pay, mentioned that they were the best chips I had ever tasted - and I meant it! However, I was told that they are fried in animal fat. Although I am not vegetarian, I won’t eat anything that’s cooked in animal fat, and vegetarians and vegans certainly won’t. For that reason, this should be stated on the menu, as vegetarians have no way of knowing that this is the case. I did put this to one of the staff, who said she would pass it on. I really do hope she does,

We had previously enjoyed a visit here, so we returned..Sadly the experience was nowhere near that of our last visit..Tea for 3 came in a pot for 1 with a open jug of hot water..After highlighing this issue, two more pots of tea arrived..On a plus note the cakes were nice..I'm sad to say avoid this venue !

A word of honest advice, save yourself the money and time and dine somewhere else. At first glance it may seem sugardough (sourdough, really) is a cozy cafe, but in reality it is not what it seems. We were sat down at a dirty table which they didn’t even have the courtesy cleaning in the twenty minutes we sat waiting on service. The cakes are dry and must’ve been baked last week. The porridge was mushy and bland and reminded me of prison food. The majority of staff were occupied and unprofessional making us wait about half an hour for three very simple meals. The toast I ordered could’ve been used to build a house. If the owner is reading, how do you sleep at night? Because I couldn’t, I got food poisoning. After leaving this review I will be contacting the United Kingdom food standards and hygiene agency for this establishment. I am not trying to be mean, I’m just looking out for my fellow uk citizens. If I could I would erase this memory from my mind. Have a blessed day and always pray over your food.

Step inside Sugardough in the Lanes, and you’re whisked away to a whimsical realm where loaves leap off shelves and cappuccinos charm with frothy flourish. This isn’t just a café; it’s a buttery beacon for bread enthusiasts. The moment I crossed the threshold, a symphony of aromas—warm bread, freshly ground coffee, and a hint of nostalgic sweetness—greeted me. The décor, an eclectic mix of rustic tables and quirky knick-knacks, felt like the cozy kitchen of a master baker friend. Seated by the window, I ordered the house special: avocado toast. But dear reader, this was no ordinary toast. The Sugardough was crusty and tangy, the avocado creamy and adorned with chili flakes and olive oil. Each bite was a testament to the alchemy of simplicity. And then there was Toby—the café’s shining star. His genuine warmth transformed the café into a convivial retreat. As a child, I adored rum balls, elusive orbs of rich chocolate and rum that seemed to vanish before I could claim them. Imagine my delight finding them here. Sugardough’s rum balls didn’t disappoint; each bite balanced deep chocolate with a warm, rum embrace—a nostalgic trip down memory lane. In summary, Sugardough is a delightful escape for food lovers, and Toby’s attentive service adds an extra sprinkle of magic. 🌟

WISH WE'D READ THE NUMEROUS OTHER BAD REVIEWS BEFORE ENTERING!! The place is tiny with inadequate seating meaning we ended up balancing on wonky stools and a narrow shelf BUT worst of all is the rip off prices! My partner had a cup of tea with one teabag in it which they served in a one-cup teapot and asked me to pay £4.90 for it - BUT worse was to come!! They do NOT take £cash so when presented with my credit card they SNEAKILY added 12% service charge FOR SERVING A POT OF TEA! so it cost me £5.49 for a guy to walk 5 metres to us with a small tray and even then we had to borrow the sugar bowl from an adjoining table!!! TOTALLY OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!

* AVOID AVOID AVOID * Embarrassingly poor standards of customer care, choice, hygiene and menu. Menu listed choice of wines ( in a cafe?! ) above selection of cakes. Clearly out to make a fast buck. Overpriced dreadful place with very poor offerings. I was ashamed to be a Brighton resident. Filthy teapots, lipstick on cups, overheard another vegan customer being told ‘sorry no vegan cakes’ AAAAAARGH come on!! Try harder!!

Avoid! So many more gorgeous cafes in Brighton with a full choice of homemade cakes and staff who care. Arrived on a Monday afternoon at 3pm looking forward to a cuppa and slice of cake. Waited at least 10 minutes to be served despite the cafe being less than half full. It’s a small cafe. Only a choice of 5 cakes left from a menu choice of approximately 10. Drinks and cake arrived 10 minutes later without the crème fresh which was stated on the menu and in filthy cups and teapots with old drink stains and lipstick on. Checked with waitress where the crème fresh was and she bought over one portion. We had ordered one raspberry cake and a cheesecake. The raspberry cake was hard and dry and completely inedible especially considering the price of £5.50. The cheesecake was edible. Complained at that point not wanting to drink from crockery or eat the raspberry cake. They asked for the payment of the cheesecake and we then went elsewhere.

This is the worst place I’ve been in a long time. There are about 8 tables - 4 waiting staff and it seems no chef. We came to Sugardough because the Breakfast Club nearby was heaving with people- and I am so glad we did. The waitress was so charming and friendly, and made sure we had everything we asked for. She was honest about which dishes were her recommended, which was a breath of fresh air for food service, and her recommendations were so good! Noting that we were a bit fragile (translation: incredibly hungover), she kept us topped up with water and joked with us, and even gifted my friend a croissant on her own dime after he didn't order anything! The croissant was amazing, and the crumpets I had on my eggs benedict, which are made in house, were to die for. We will 100% be coming back again and will keep recommending to people!

Avoid. Had breakfast here and overpriced for what amounts to two eggs scrambled, four mushrooms and two slices of un-toasted toast. Beats me how the chef thinks this is acceptable when the dish cost 12.00. Husbands food as small as a starter for about 14.00. Hidden 10% service charge added to the bill. No bill given, just have to go to till to pay and told what you owe. I queried as didn't seem right only to be told there is a service charge. Beware, what a scam.

I stopped here for a hot chocolate with 'homemade marshmallows' while I was out shopping. When the waiter finally brought it to the table there were no marshmallows - and when I asked where they were, I was told the marshmallows had run out. I said I wouldn't have chosen a hot chocolate if I'd known and he should have told me when I ordered it. He then tried to take it away. I grabbed it back, saying I've waited long enough for this, I'm not going to order something else and have to wait again.'Oh, thought you said you didn't want it,' he grunted. No apology, no nothing - and this hot chocolate cost a whopping £3.60 and wasn't even hot! The cakes looked good but I won't be returning to try them when this is their attitude. There are plenty of nicer places to visit.

Stopped here for coffee and cake on a rainy Saturday with our two puppies and they were very welcoming. Lovely array of exquisite cakes and decent size coffees. Will definitely be returning. (Can be found next door Breakfast club)

A brief rain induced coffee break. Nice coffee. Slow service. Cakes looked good but unsampled this occasion.

Stopped for a cup of tea in the afternoon - the prices were a bit steep, but the tea and treacle tart were excellent

Visited the place to purchase some baked goods. The person at the serving counter was simply rude. When I asked if there are any baguette the look and tone he have me answering “no” was totally rude. Before I could say anything else he walked away to one of the tables. I thought... sure he is busy serving tables as well as the counter. Thought I would wait. He returned looked at me and then without a word went downstairs. As a customer it was clear to see I was an inconvenience. I will not return as my money is spent better elsewhere. On much nicer products too!

Popped in for a coffee and slice of cake. Both were delicious. Staff were really pleasant too. Would recommend a visit.

I used to come here often and always had a posh ploughman’s, was always really good with generous portions, not anymore. £11 and I was served half the amount of ham you used to get with 2 thin slices of cheese, 1 piece of cheddar and 1 piece of Red Leicester, for 4 slices of bread? I asked whether that was right as I’d eaten there before and got given another 2 slices. The staff are definitely not as friendly and helpful as they used to be, although the young girl server was polite/nice. It’s a shame as I used to really like this place but I won’t go here again. There are far better places to spend your money. I think having more mature staff there would help your cause. Such a shame.

Visited here with my family the other day and the experience was appalling. No option for a cup of tea, only sold in pots £3.50 a piece and from that you could just about scrape three tiny tea cups full. And for the tea itself. Well, it was tea leaves, which isn’t an issue, however they had sunk to the bottom leaving the first two cups tasting like nothing more than hot water and the third cup tasting like ash. Furthering this, we asked a member of staff for some sugar and he silently pointed at some on the side, with brown sugar only. So we asked if they had any white sugar and he scoffed and said ‘no. Brown sugar is still sugar’. My mum had a slice of cake and I had a cupcake. The cupcake was made up 70% of icing and 30% dry cake. The cakes were all exposed with no glass case therefore leaving it as a great hub for wasps to crawl all over. And then, despite the cafe closing at 6:30pm and us arriving at 4:45pm, we were told they were no longer serving any hot food, leaving the options incredibly limited. And to add insult to injury, 3 pots of tea, a cupcake, slice of cake, a cookie and a bottle of juice came to the ridiculous price of £30! Certainly would not recommend to anyone, no matter how much money you have to waste on dry cake and watery tea!

Went into Small Batch, Hove Station at 4.20 pm yesterday. I ordered a coffee as a dine-in customer. Was told that I would have to use a take away cup as they would be closing soon. I left but not before telling the cashier that I would have drunk my coffee within 10 minutes. Small Batch website indicates that they close at 5.00 pm. BTW there were no other customers. Anyway, I went down the road and gave another coffee shop my business.

Unfortunately, even though there were many things right I'll be avoiding this place. The service was impeccable, good beer, perfect lighting and lovely music. So what was wrong? A coven of aggressive women believing they ran the place because they'd booked a table. At their request the music, that I'd been enjoying, was turned off so they could conduct their meeting whilst sipping peppermint tea. I'd suggest a pub isn't an ideal place for this sort of thing. Especially if you're hell-bent on spoiling the atmosphere for everyone else. Sadly, they're regulars.

Absolutely excellent. Had the calamari starter and the small plate of scallops which was exquisite. Glass of Whispering Angel rosé to accompany. Recommended.

Walking through Kemptown we stumbled across this place. Is very small but has a much needed and appreciated outside area. The barman was lovely & sitting there watching the world walk by in the sun enjoying cold alcoholic beverages was gorgeous.
