Visited today 10/12 and wasted 45 minutes of our time! Arrived at 3:25 for our 3:30 lunch booking and told we had a table in the conservatory and to take a seat in the bar and they would come and get us. We ordered a couple of drinks and waited and waited and waited. People arrived after us appeared to get sorted along with locals sat at the bar! The young lady who greeted us on our arrival and who was very pleasant kept walking past looking busy but it was obvious we had been forgotten. The blonde lady behind the bar came and asked if we had eaten. After letting her know we had not despite booking a 3:30 slot, we thought ‘finally we would get seated’ how wrong were we! No apology, we were still ignored so decided to pay for our drinks and leave! I asked them to cancel the table as we couldn’t wait any longer; the young girl who took the payment apologised, the blonde lady didn’t even look at me… we then left. Disappointing given that there were tables not occupied. Appalling service we will not be returning!

We booked our table for two. As we walked in we were welcomed by name even though it was our first post pandemic visit. Wednesday is pie n pud night. Great portions of perfectly cooked food for just £12 each. We both had steak and stilton pie with chips and peas. Perfect pastry with lots of stilton complimenting the really tender beef. Three of us visited the Sugar Loaf for lunch yesterday at my Dad's request as he remembered it from his youth. We were all agreed it was a good decision!Great choice of food, my husband had the homemade lasagne (very good), I had the ham and pickle baguette (just the job) and Dad had the FABULOUS Traditional ham and stilton ploughman's. He had particular praise for the rustic bread. The quantities were good to generous. We each had a pint of well kept Doom Bar. And the cost - just £34.40! What excellent value particularly in view of the high quality of produce as first rate. In addition, there is good wheelchair access from the car park, though the loos are not access friendly due to the structure of the building - we coped.I am not known for glowing reviews, but I cannot find any reason to mark down The Sugar Loaf and their staff. We hope to revisit when we are next down from Scotland.

Nothing too fancy but it served pub food and Specials. A lovely young lady took our order, we waited maybe half an hour for food but understandable as it was busy. When the food arrived it was lovely full of flavour. I had a mountain burger which was homemade and my partner had fish which you could tell was fresh, lovely chips as well not brought in.When we went to pay a nice chap behind the bar gave us our bill, could not ask for better service. Monday evening and not many pubs open for food, so we were lucky to be recommended The Sugar Loaf at Ab Kettleby. It's a regular pub, pleasant, friendly staff, comfortable seating, clean loos but when it really comes into it's own is the food. Pub food it may be, but it's home made. Pies which overflow with meat, chips which are made out of actual potatoes and you must order the onion rings - the chef makes his own, none of that freezer to fryer stuff as most places serve. The prices are affordable - between £7 and about £14 for a main course, decent beer too! Thanks Sugar Loaf, a nice meal without breaking the bank:-)

I came here with my girlfriend. As we entered, a man wearing a hoodie and baggy trousers came up to us and gave us some menus, I can't say I've ever been served by a man who cared less about his appearance. The starters came and my girlfriend didn't like it, it happens, fair enough, no problem. It seemed however to offend the gentleman who served us (the same man in the hoodie) as he started talking to my girlfriend saying 'what's wrong with it?' 'you don't like it do you?'.Then when we were eating our main course. I could tell my girlfriend was put off and felt uncomfortable, as she thought she was being judged for everything she chose not to eat. This included cold, rock hard chips. While eating, a car parked rather foolishly next to the Sugar Loaf and obstructed a coming car, which the car behind made clear by beeping his horn. What I didn't expect to happen is our waiter to come in the same room we were eating, look out the window and begin to call the driver a 'f***ing idiot'.Finally, we decided not to have dessert because we felt uncomfortable in the building, so I went to pay. When I began to pay, the phone rang and the same man told me to hold on whilst he answered the phone, as it went through the same line, fair enough. What, under no circumstance do I expect to see is the man stick his hand in the ice cube tub and start picking some cubes out and sucking them while on the phone, ARE YOU MAD!? Why would you do that and how do you have the guts to do it in front of customers? You used the spade to get them out for us but now that feels rather useless as I now know you happily place your hands in the ice bucket and start sucking on the cubes when bored.

Been here today with friends and family, have to say it’s not great by any stretch of the imagination. One of those carvery’s where it’s not actually really a carvery in the respect that you don’t have the option to put food on your plate yourself. Meat, Yorkshire puddings and parsnips are rationed and put onto your plate for you by the chef, and then you get vegetables bought to the table, they bought us 1 bowl of vegetables between 5, it was laughable. Extremely tight on the portions, mash potato was bland and lumpy, roast potatoes like rock cakes and cauliflower cheese literally had 3 pieces of cauliflower. Another in our party had a baguette and it was basically just bread with a couple of shavings of cheese in and slices of onion, again, very tight on the portions. I wouldn’t recommend this place. Nothing positive to say about the place to be honest.

My friends and I called in on the offchance for Sunday Lunch a couple of weeks ago as we were looking for a carvery. The staff were all polite and friendly, but I felt that the lady (who I assumed to be in charge) was otherwise engaged, spending a good deal of time pacing around the bar and serving area, talking on the phone. Maybe there were problems but I felt it was inappropriate to be doing this in front of customers. My party had arrived a little before midday and they were kind enough to 'fit us in', advising us that there was another party booked for 1:30pm. We were told there were four meats available - Beef, Turkey, Ham, and Pork (my favourite). We were seated in a nice little conservatory area and had to wait for a while as the servers were not quite ready. No problem there of course - we were early. Also, we were advised that the vegetables would be brought out separately. This made some sense as the carvery area was very limited and there was no space for self-service vegetable dishes. Sadly though, when the meats were eventually brought out there was no pork - Hmmm! To avoid delaying my friends I opted for the beef instead. The food was nicely cooked and vegetables were served promptly. However, I felt the portions were rather less than generous for the price which was tending toward the upper bracket for a Sunday Lunch (there were four of us sharing quite small dishes of assorted veg.), e.g. only two small roast potatoes each, and no mash. Also, the gravy reminded me of that my mum used to make (that's not a compliment) - very watery By the time we had finished our meal, the pork was ready. Hmmm again! We didn't have a dessert, but even so our bill was around £60 for four of us, with only one drink each. To summarise, the food was nicely cooked, but a bit pricey for what it was, especially as my choice of meat was not available and the vegetables were along the lines of Hobson's Choice and fairly meagre to boot. The watery gravy put the finishing touch to a very disappointing meal for me. I won't be going again in a hurry

My son had the beef and ale pie and I had the scampi, we had a good sized bowl of chips between us, unfortunately we had to leave some. My son also ordered salad with his pie and I am sure if he had wanted mashed potato instead of chips the Chef would have been very happy to accommodate him.My scampi was delicious and we both had the chocolate chip brioche bread and butter pudding with cream, yum yum. I am delighted to say that neither of us were sick when we got home and will definitely be going back. Well done to Chef and waitresses!

So many of our friends have raved about this pub, but sadly not for us.The waitresses were attentive and the service okay. The food on the other hand wasn't as expected. The positives were that they were very accommodating to our daughter's gluten intolerance. The fish was very good, but the downsides were that chips for five were bought in a dish to share! Confusing. The pie was served in a bowl and swimming in gravy and thought we were getting mash! But the real disappointment was the scampi. Yes, hot and crunchy on the outside but totally Mushy and inedible - to the point I have since come home and been sick.I was very surprised that although I informed the waitress that the scampi wasn't good, all we were offered was apologies from the kitchen. No alternative and the full price was expected to be paid. We did pay.Sadly, we shan't be returning and certainly won't recommend.Good luck!

Had a lovely lunch of crispy beef and noodles. It's a starter on the menu just what was needed for lunch. Pub very clean and staff friendly. Would not hesitate to call in again.

My husband and I visited The Sugar Loaf for Sunday Lunch after visiting friends. This was our second visit but first Sunday Lunch and it was fabulous. We had the carvary which was lovely and the first carvery where the vegetables were cooked fresh. The ambience was cosy & friendly and the service was first class. We will definitely be going back even though it is not local to us.

Very good meal with very friendly staff. Our first time here. The only disappointment was the noise from children in the bar which slightly detracted from our meal. It could be that it was a Saturday and possibly popular with local families. Will try again in the week possibly.

Best beef and ale pie at any pub anywhere in Britain this year and probably everSoft succulent beef.Real pastry on top, not a piece of crunch just put there but real pie topping made as one piece in the oven.Great real chips that were not greasy in any way. Served with charm by the young staff.Topped off with a pint of perfectly kept real ale.More please Chef Paul.

We've been visiting every month or so evenings and lunchtimes and we're never disappointed. The food is fresh cooked by a really great Chef who trained at a top establishment. It's great news that he and his partner are taking on the pub on the 22nd August and giving it a tidy up with new carpets and decoration etc. Looking forward to seeing the results! We love it here.

Revisited the Sugar Loaf for dinner this evening. Very little changes, the menu seems pretty much the same as two years ago but take this as a positive. Food is still good, well-presented and wholesome.

Went here last Saturday night, food was lovely well presented, young waitress was helpful. Just a shame about the chap behind the bar. He wasn't very interested it felt like he didn't want to be there, he looked like he owned the place. We have heard from friends that the owners are leaving, maybe this is a good thing as the decor hasn't changed for a Gd few years and needs a good tidy up. We will go back but will wait to here when new people go in. Shame really as such a lovely pub.

Visited on 15th February for my daughter's birthday. Was told that there were no steaks at all, no burgers and no pate, which was very disappointing. They ran out the day before as it was Valentine's Day. As it was there was not much choice, so we chose steak pie, fish and chips and sausage and mash, which were all excellent. As pate was off we had Stilton mushrooms, spicy chicken and as there was nothing my daughter liked she had crusty bread and oil. All of which were delicious. Service was good and surroundings very pleasant, although the windows in conservatory were a little draughty. All in all a very pleasant evening in spite of lack of choice.

We had Sunday lunch at The Sugar Loaf today and were very pleased. We hadn't booked and got the last table as there appeared top be a lot of reserved tables. We had starters of Prawn Cocktails and they were on big dishes and very generous for a starter. For mains we opted for the Carvery and liked the way that they serve it. When you order the carvery the staff come and tell you when you vegetables are cooked and ready to serve so that you can go to the hot plate to select for choice of meat. There was a good choice of Turkey, Gammon, Pork or Beef (and pink in the middle) or a selection of a couple of meats, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds and gravy, again big portions. The veg was very good and still had a good selection, still had crispness and taste. We liked this way rather than some pubs that serve the veg from the hotplate that has been boiled to death. Again very generous portions but well cooked. We will go back.

We've passed this place many times on the Melton road and often noticed a fair few customers in the dining room.... (always a good sign!) We finally called in for a late mid-week lunch, mainly drawn by the "food served all day" sign. The pub is nicely furnished and we sat in the conservatory area, along with a couple of other parties. The menu is very traditional "pub grub" with a range of light bites, jackets, pub classics and grills. We both opted for filled baguettes served with superb chips and salad. Really nice quality food, lovely meat and cheese, freshly cooked. A good selection of drinks are available including a couple of guest ales on tap.Very reasonable prices and exceptionally friendly service......! Highly recommended!

Had our office Christmas lunch at the Sugar Loaf and the meals were excellent, I had the Christmas turkey dinner and it was probably one of the best I have had in a restaurant, everyone in our party were very complmentary of their meals whatever they had, very pleased we went here and will certainly go again, prices were resonably too.

Lunch for four, two elderly, two over 55's. A busy period with a Xmas party large group. However, service was still good and the food excellent. Sea Bass outstanding and the Chicken Liver pate probably the best I have tasted in many, many years. Pleasant staff and very good value. Will visit again definitely.

Went here for Sunday carveryArrive dead on midday and staff were still arriving, it was like they weren't prepared for anyone arriving yet. Not a good start.Took our order relatively quickly and got called up for the Carvery not long after. The guy serving at the Carvery was very friendly and welcoming. The meat was very nice (had pork with crackling and turkey), but the yorkshires were over cooked bordering on burnt and there was only roast potatoes, no mash (criminal in my opinion). The veg is delivered separately after you get your meat,Yorkshire and roasts which is a good idea so you don't get overlooked mushy veg. HOWEVER this didn't work, as the veg was bland and raw. I couldn't cut through the brussels. I like my veg al dente but this hard!Friendly staff and puddings relatively tasty. I probably wouldn't come back here as there are a lot nicer Sunday roasts in the area in my opinion. Overall average experience.

I attended the Sugar Loaf last week on Sunday for a carvery with my husband. I was very happy to see such young, polite, and enthusiastic waitresses. I did not get her name, she was around 20 with light hair. Her service was impeccable, she was very efficient and would do anything to help. You don't often see such happy faces. I would definitely return for both the food and incredible service.

Having recently moved to the area we decided to try out one of our local pub/ restaurants and The sugar loaf did not disappoint. The staff and the service we have experienced over our previous 4 bookings since September 2015 and with different members of our family on each occasion have been warm and friendly, the waiters and waitresses have been attentive and pleasant. We have never been dissapointed with the food, very tasty and plenty of it and a good variety on offer, and having seen so many dishes due to going with different guests with different tastes the one and only thing I would have to criticise on was the pork belly dish, beautiful pork but crackling was far far too salty it was inedible, however on another occasion where it had been eaten it was delicious so I am hoping this was just I slip of the salt sellar!! And my only criticism so far on the pub is that, as one other reviewer had mentioned, was the tables do feel slightly sticky I think a good scrub with hot soapy water at the end of each sitting would do the trick! We will be returning again as just booked in for our Xmas meet up with yet more relatives and very much looking forward to it.

My wife's death I and a friend have met here fo food twice this year already and had really good experiences. So our expectations were high by then were dashed. Our table, although nicely set out was a bit 'sticky' as if it had been wiped with a dirty cloth. But that was just the tip of the issue! The main concern was over the main course, all three of us opted for the Irish stew with warm bread from the specials menu.Upon arrival there was a half full dish of small pieces of lamb with some small bits of vegetables but a distinct lack of one fundamental ingredient, Potatoes!! The lamb was ok but my wife's portion was particularly fatty. The lack of potatoes was only supplemented by the plate of chips we ordered (best part of the meal frankly). The we come to desert, our friend and I opted for the cheeseboard on the basis that it's hard to get that wrong and it was perfectly satisfactory, however my wife's so called 'Apple Crumble' had a significant lack of 2 main ingredients 1)sugar in the crumble which was powdery and 2) apple, just one small slice under the so called crumble. We spoke to the barman about the food and he was very apologetic but attempted make a strange excuse about the stew given to him by the chef, claiming that if they put too much potatoe in then some customers would complain about it??? Irish stew without potatoes cannot call itself Irish, it should be described as 'meat in gravy' . Fair do's to the barman he made a reduction in the bill and continued to apologies.Real shame given our last two visits were much better. Think we may look for alternative venues for future meet ups until, such time as the chef finds his Mojo again. Sorry Sugar Loaf!

We , the family, celebrated my wife and son in law's birthdays and attended this restaurant last Sunday. Everything about this place i.e its atmosphere , its location, of the friendliness of the staff was brilliant .. On top of that was the outstanding value and food quality of the carvery.I had to eat the large Yorkshire pudding and roasted parsnip so I could add the freshly cooked mixed vegetables and cauliflower cheese to my plate of meat . At vless than £10.00 per head this has to be the best pub meal I have had this year. In addition there is a selection of local real ale . I tried the starter of mushrooms cooked in a stilton sauce which was delicious . I had no room for the desserts on offer. I will return but will ensure that I am hungry before I get there. You do need to book which is not surprising.

Staff seemed too busy chatting at the beginning.....so ordered at the bar. took a long time to come despite not being exceptionally busy for a friday night and when it arrived. the pork was very salty. the chicken meal we had from the specias board was quite nice though, but nothing really to really rant about. Disappointing desserts menu too, which even the staff told us! Overall, sadly disappointed.

My wife and I dropped in whilst driving through the countryside and were pleasantly surprised by this pub restaurant. The food was of excellent quality and there was plenty of it. My wife loved the chicken in Stilton sauce and the chips were amazing. However the quality for me showed with the homemade onion rings. The batter was crisp and not dripping in fat, the rings were of a good size and plenty of them but the best part was when you bit into them you did not have the whole steaming hot onion coming out on the first bite scalding your lip and chin. Honestly I will go back just to snack on the chips and onion rings with a drink if I don't have time for one of the delicious main meals. The service was pleasant. We ate late afternoon but as we prepared to leave the early dinner customers arrived and the place was almost full, another good sign that our high opinion was valid.
