Sugar Loaf Cafe in Weymouth and Portland

Mixed review: A warm and friendly welcome, clean and tidy. Day one: breakfast was lovely, all appeared freshly cooked so it took a little longer, the food was nice and of great value. Feel like there was a whole can of beans for the 'beans on toast' and it was piping hot. The pot of tea was plentiful The 'coffee' milkshake was more like warm milk, not the best. Day two: ordered the thick shake this time - meant to be with ice cream and so thought that would make it cooler and tastier - wrong, it was the same as the previous visit with cream and sprinkles - not the best (if you want a nice thick iced coffee, visit the White Stones cafe). The food took a bit longer again as it was Sunday and busy. The mushroom on toast was cold but we were on a time crunch, so we couldn't send it back. The taste was nice, just cold and the black pudding was a bit on the rubbery side. Everyone else enjoyed theirs.

Friendly welcome. Lovely coffee, tea and cake. Some home baking looked yummy. Good value. Lunch menu looked great. Highly recommended

Ordered a delivery sunday roast, it was absolutely lovely fresh vegetables and roast potatoes had the lamb and pot of gravy with the juices from the meat. Highly recommended will definitely be ordering again. 10/10

Good cheap friendly cafe with plenty of homemade choices. Staff seemed to know everyone menu had some nice homemade choices with lots of pudding choices.

You are made most welcome as soon as you enter. The menu provides wide choices of home cooked food at very reasonable prices. I chose Bubble & Squeak, with Bacon & Eggs, cooked just how I liked it.

We spent a week on business on Portland island, recommended this lovely restaurant for breakfast. We were not disappointed lovely large brekkie reasonably price, great coffee and friendly staff. A charming cafe like going back in time, but that was its charm, will definitely be returning

6 of us ladies went for a Christmas 🎄 evening meal. The food and staff were fantastic. We were made to feel welcome and like nothing was too much trouble. The table was decorated, and we had Christmas crackers. The fire 🔥 was roaring and topped up to keep us warm on a very cold night. Thank you Sugarloaf we had a lovely time. Also very cheap for a 3 course meal.

Shown to a very messy table, had to ask to have it wiped, the cloth the waitress used to clean it smelt terrible and it was dirty, it was off putting but we stayed. I had a beef dinner which was good, my husband had a full breakfast was also good. We had desserts, the crumble was very wet and undercooked, I hardly touched it, I informed the waitress who did not offer me an alternative and proceeded to add it to the bill which I questioned. It made me feel uncomfortable but they should have dealt with it better. We have been here many times before over many years, but feel it has gone down hill, especially the cleanliness and service over time 🤷‍♀️

Great little cafe, well worth finding if you’re on Portland, lovely food & staff 😊 & my mates rice pudding was the best he said.

This little cafe has a huge menu both of cooked meals and snacks. I recommend their Ploughmans lunch. It is also very reasonably priced and the sevice is good. However, not surprisingly the cafe was very busy and the tables close together so we did not visit again as we don't like crowded places.

Really lovely family run little cafe full of character & old Portland stone features. The staff are so lovely & nothing is too much trouble. Simply the BEST vegan nut roast I've had out & generous with the roast spuds (had to take 2 home this time!). All day breakfasts are awesome & love the veggie one! Home made cakes & desserts & they keep non dairy milk if you need it. The food is very good & a very good price! Well behaved dogs are welcome. Such a great find, we return over & over again.

On holiday in the area we called into The Sugar Loaf Cafe on a Sunday lunchtime in the hope they might be able to accommodate us (2 adults and a dog). Despite being very busy they found us a table and we had the best roast dinner we have had for a long time! The portions were generous and everything was cooked beautifully - we couldn’t find fault with anything. A fabulous dinner was followed by a huge dessert menu and we were delighted with our choices (the Bakewell tart was delicious). We were astounded by what good value the food was as well. The service was great, very friendly and we were made to feel very welcome. We very much look forward to visiting again when we are next in the area.

This place is amazing!Not only is the food above the satisfactionary level of the food I usually cook at home but the hygiene is also effortlessly clean!One example of this is The Sugarloaf‘s toilets.The previous day I had been to Monkey World where the toilets weren’t very clean!Then the day after I came here for dinner.The toilet room was very pristine and well kept.I applaud the many workers who work so hard to keep that toilet spotless! However my favourite part of the toilet experience was the sign in white words exclaiming ,‘The poo room‘. I’m ist say it’s an overall 10/10 (food and toilet wise) since that day I had bowel issues!!The chicken and leek gratin (my order) was served immaculately by a young worker who served with pride and elegance!!Keep up the amazing work,I hope to find the chance to come back soon

We were staying at Cove Park so walked up to The Sugar Loaf for breakfast. Staff were very friendly and the dogs were allowed to sit inside with us. We had full English and they could accommodate a gluten free diet, hash browns were gf, toast swapped for gf and sausages swapped for gf (think the sausages were vegetarian, I didn’t love them but appreciated the option, even my dog refused to eat it 🤣). But big plus for friendliness and a good hot breakfast!

We just went here for breakfast, but were pleasantly surprised by the "family atmosphere", the quality of the food, the reasonable prices and the big portions - so really nothing to improve, just keep up the good work. Highly recommended!

We were a party of 6, walking on Portland. Stopped for lunch at Sugar loaf cafe. Wow, what a gem of a place. Great service, food and value for money. All our dietary requirements were catered for, celiac and lactose free amongst us. Thank you , hope to return again .

Staff were unfriendly, we felt quite unwelcome, maybe they just don’t like tourists. The waitress was friendly to the other customers who all seemed like locals. We didn’t enjoy being in there.

Good food and drink, friendly service, but not Covid safe. Bottom line: the maximum amount of people allowed in the rooms should be lowered as it is impossible to adequately maintain social distancing and we felt like we were sitting on top of one another. There is no information on the website to tell you what to expect in terms of Covid-19 prevention measures. And cash only? This is certainly not Covid safe and should be made clear on the website. Sorry, lovely service and food, and would like to see measures put in place to bring this café up to standard.

We went to this little cafe today for some homemade food. Apart from the sanitizer on entering, there was nothing covid safe about it. We were given a table and ths menus were already used, not replaced. No visors or masks worn by staff. Food was bearable and when asked for ketchup was handed a bottle! The toilet was through the kitchen and a shared towel to dry hands. One lady who worked there was hugging and kissing the regular customers. We tried to pay with card but they only accept cash. We were very nervous on leaving and called at tesco to give our hands a good wash.

Super tasty and well priced full English breakfast. Downsides were there weren't a lot of options, and the orange juice is definitely not pure fruit juice - probably from concentrate. But overall very good.

After a busy morning with early start and lots of walking it was lovely to stumble across this and pop in for a pick me up pot of tea and cake. Welcome refuel and off we went.

So , all my gf and I wanted was 2 coffees and toast and marmalade ( brown for her , and white bread for me) for two. You'd think that was going to be simple. It wasn't . Firstly the coffees came out , that was fine.......then ONLY MY TOAST. ....just two slices , that's all . My gf had to wait for her toast. FFS......INVEST IN A 4 SLICE TOASTER !!!!!!!! But when hers came out there were 3 GREEN MOULD growths on the crust on her toasted brown bread . We called the staff back into the eating area from the kitchen , The server apologised and got more toast . By now I had eaten half of my toast and the mould sight put me off the rest . I had now finished my 'meal' and had to wait for my gf to receive and finish hers. When we paid the bill you would have thought that my gf's toast bill would have been cancelled. Nope. The service was crap and there are two other places near this establishment that we will be visiting next time instead. The place is not value for money when served rotting food.

The Sugar Loaf Cafe on Portland offers great home cooked food and cakes at an affordable price with a lovely homely atmosphere.A pot of tea is £1.75 per person and a medium roast dinner chicken,lamb,beef or ham £6.75 each with a side serving of roast potatoes and extra gravy. Also they do a great range of puddings the chocolate pudding hot with custard was lush.Great value friendly service and lovely hot home cooked food!

Visited during September 2019. We were looking for somewhere to have a cup of tea and a light snack. The Sugar Loaf was just the job. Excellent food beautifully served and eaten in a little peaceful haven of a back yard packed with flowers and foliage.

This little cafe is a real gem. The choice of food is amazing, everything is home made on site, the meals are really tasty, the prices very reasonable and the staff are really friendly. What more can you ask for? I had a beef roast dinner and my husband had the steak pie. We followed that by fresh fruit salad for him and cherry pie and ice cream for me. Absolutely great. Just wish we lived nearer so we could come every week

Delicious homemade food, from a very varied menu, served by very considerate and attentive staff; made the whole visit a true delight. Heartily recommended for lunch; you would be very hard pushed not to find a suitable meal from the menu. Our plates returned to the kitchen empty. Cannot wait to go again!

Huge variety of choice for adults and kids, prompt service even when very busy, delicious meals and especially great puddings.

Visited 29/8 for late lunch. What a total treat chicken pie fresh out of oven mash carrots and peas, chips followed by sublime raspberry roulade. I just wish I lived slightly closer or I would be back like a shot. Should have taken some pics - next time

When most cafes and restaurants buy ready-made food cheaply from wholesalers and pass it off to customers as their own, how refreshing it is to see genuine homemade food being sold for what it is. No nonsense, unpretentious good old-fashioned grub. Menu tip: steak pie. I am sure vegans/veggies will feel well-catered for with the vegetable pie but if you partake of flesh, you will not be disappointed.

On my Parents visits they always dine at Sugar Loaf Cafe.

The Sugar loaf is a traditional little cafe situated on portland. The food here will literally take you back to when you used to live at home and your mum was cooking!

I visited the cafe today. After reading the menu, I decided the Steak and Ale pie was for me! However the lovely waitress informed me that Liver and onions was on the menu. So I decided to try this instead. Just WOW! OMG absolutely divine. Just like my Mother made, in Northumberland. Definitely in for a return visit. Delicious.

This place is a gold mine went for a long walk on Portland popped into The Sugar Loaf they were packed had to go off for a walk and come back.

The quality of food was appalling and the worst I have ever have experienced around the area, staff were accommodating though.

As we were due to spend a few days in Portland we researched on line places to eat. We therefore stopped at The Sugar Loaf Cafe for coffee/cake. There was an extensive reasonably priced menu so we decided to return on our second and third days and were so glad we did. The meal was substantial, the food was delicious and the staff were lovely and friendly. Overall it was excellent value for money.

Bit cramped inside, good food and friendly staff x nothing fancy but worth a visit x can get very busy at times.

Quaint little tea room on the lovely Easton Square. The small cooked breakfast was lovely and quick to arrive. Accommodating for our kids too.

Visited this homely cafe on Portland this lunchtime. They had a lot of reservations for Sunday lunch, all accommodated in 3 separate dining areas - apparently seats 40. Tardis comes to mind.

We drove to the sugar loaf as we've had good meals there before, and weren't disappointed. Baked lambs liver and a leek and brie quiche were delicious. Sweets are also really tasty and not expensive. We will be going back next time we're close to Portland.

We went for Sunday roast and it was quite nice. The best thing: how friendly and nice the staff was.

Friends recommended this cafe and it's well worth stopping by for lunch or just coffee and cake. All the food was home-made - reminded me of the food grandma would cook for us. We tried the steak pie - which was delicious served with tasty gravy and fresh veg. The puddings were exceptional too. Good hearty fare. It felt like coming home!

Stopped here for lunch on the way through the island. Dawn was an excellent host. Most of the tables were full of regulars enjoying lunch. The food was freshly cooked and delicious. Homely food, well made and well presented.

Phoned to see whether this little cafe could accommodate 6 of us for a late afternoon cream team, and was thrilled to find the could. Lovely warm sweet and savoury scones and home-made jam and chutney. Very friendly, just wish we could have popped back for a meal as the menu looked wonderful!

This is a very small and friendly cafe. There is no children's menu but children can order small portions from the adult menu. My Grandson was very impressed with the jelly surprise. There is a very pleasant little garden outside where you could sit and eat. The food is all home cooked. This cafe is well supported by locals

This was my second visit to this cafe and as before, the staff were very friendly and helpful. I had a coffee and a slice of homemade cake, which had been made that morning and was still a tad warm - lovely.

We decided to go to the Sugar Loaf for lunch. As always, the food was home cooked and very tasty, and the prices are reasonable. The staff are friendly so it makes a visit very enjoyable. The home made whiskey marmalade was too much of a temptation...mother in law bought a jar. We will definitely go back next time we're down in Weymouth.

Stopped in at the Sugar Loaf Cafe after walking from Portland Bill. The food was served quickly and tasted amazing. A true home cooked meal was welcomed after so much walking! Dawn was friendly and catered to our every need, even the price was great! If you are going through Easton I highly recommend the Sugar Loaf Cafe.

Looked like a likely candidate for a refreshing cuppa late afternoon. It didn't disappoint. Tea, latte, scones and 2 choc cake portions were very nice. The service was good after I had tuned into her ever so slightly abrupt/surly method of customer service. I winced when she kept telling my 2 kids to 'pay attention' when she was relaying the cake selection, probably for the 1000th time that day. She was nice, I'm sure it was just her way.

Very charming cafe. Nice food, very reasonable and lovely, friendly staff. Visited back in October and had delicious soup. They were giving away apples as they had so many growing in the garden. So lovely!

Dawn is the owner of the Sugarloaf Cafe and as well as amazing home made food she has a big range of home made jams, pickles, chutney and sweets which you can buy. The menu is huge and today there were over 20 home made puddings to choose from! All your favourite British meals like fabulous roasts (5 meats to choose from ) shepherds pie and her famous steak pie usually available but also a range of great fish feasts, curry, vegetarian food and incredible salads with fruit, nuts, coleslaw etc. They open 8-6pm Monday to Saturday and 10-4 on Sundays.

Went here with my daughter for lunch, large choice of food, offers Breakfasts, Dinners, Desserts, large choice of drinks. Meals were very good and prices were very good.

We went here for a late lunch/early dinner it was very nice, home made steak pie and good vegetables followed by crumble and custard yum yum.

Stopped in for a very late lunch. Had one of the best crab sandwiches I have had in a very long time - made fresh, not leftovers from the main lunch rush as I sort of expected. Dawn not only provided excellent service, she also gave us tips on local attractions. We'll be back.
