Stroma Bistro and Bar in Angus

We turned up at the restaurant without booking a table and we kindly asked for a table for 4 (2 adults and 2 young kids). We got such a dirty look from a member of staff and he clearly huffed to check if there was any availability, the place had a lot of tables. We walked straight out as we felt so unwelcome we had to leave. We will never enter this restaurant again.

Excellent setting at the harbour. Stroma gets good reviews, so it was time to try the curries on the merit of these reviews. I had bhuna lamb with pilau rice. The lamb was tender and that's what you get with restaurant pre cooked lamb, although tender, the lamb lacked flavour of any spices during pre cooking. The pilau rice was bland, not proper pilau rice whatsoever, the rice also lacked that pilau rice flavour cooked with onions, cinnamon bark,star anise, cumin seeds, green and brown cardamom ,cloves and ghee. It was just green and red colouring put on the rice at the end of cooking it. The actual bhuna gravy was so oily that it was floating on top of the gravy and had to be spooned off. I expected to be amazed with this restaurant, but for myself it fell flat and miles away from what it should have been.

On arrival the red haired girl was attentive and sweet natured but this will probably be as good as this review gets the restaurant furnishings are pleasant but not over fussy with a muted view of the harbour aera. My partner had the mixed pakora with a bog standard chilli jam she rated it 3 out of 5 My prawn cocktail £7.95 was just okay iceberg lettuce salad with supermarket prawns in a pallid Marie rose sauce served on a flat plate underwhelmed me but nonetheless was tasty . We both had sirloin steaks that tasted funny ...my partner took hers away for the dog Served with peppercorn and Diane sauces that were charged separately and both were bland beyond comprehension sauce coming from a stock pot with additions added on serving....as we looked round the restaurant we could see many were enjoying the Indian served with superb looking nans.. wish we had gone for that ! We finished with coffee that was excellent despite the fact the mix came from subway which is franchised locally by the restaurant owner here and blended by staff of the restaurant....I don't think I would return here as all though not a bad meal it fell short of being a good meal also I had really bad expected more

Couldn’t fault the food, I love a curry and it was one of the best I’ve tasted ! The Nan was star of the show and obviously cooked fresh in tandoori oven and served piping hot full of steam and super light - exquisite! As I say food faultless…. The waitress was very good but I felt the waiter was a little unwelcoming although he worked very diligently. I left a generous tip in the bill wallet and the same stern like waiter scooped it up and normally it would be offered back with change but disappointed that it wasn’t and neither was a thank you. Anyway the food was that good we will be back

Awful awful awful very rude member of staff no real professionalism from her at all! Disgusting way to deal with customers- right from walking in the door. Other members of staff were 👌

We chose this place for a meal whilst staying in Montrose and loved everything about it. The staff were very welcoming and attentive and the menu offered so much more than just Indian food. Something for everyone, we both had Indian dishes that came with rice and were very reasonably priced. My only one slightly negative comment that the portion sizes are huge and it was hard to finish the meal. Perfectly fine if it were practical to take the rest away for another day but not practical when we were staying in a hotel!!!

I visited Stroma for the first time with my boyfriend on a Saturday night. There was music playing (Abba) when we entered but then it was cut for the rest of our visit. The waiter took our food and drinks order promptly, no complaints there. The food itself was fantastic, but we had empty drinks when the food came out and despite staff members standing at the coffee machine looking around at the fairly empty restaurant, noone offered us another round of drinks. In addition to this, when we finished our meal we weren't offered a dessert menu, and still weren't offered another drink. Whilst one could argue that we should have flagged a waiter down, there was 5 wait staff working and only 6 tables of customers. Surely customer service 101 would suggest an empty glass warrants an offer of another? Overall we would return for a takeaway meal if we were in the area, but I wouldn't recommend the restaurant for a sit down meal.

Just read Sophey11 s review which I thought was very unfair. I’ve been to Stroma numerous times and never had poor service, food is always excellent served by attentive staff. I suppose everyone can have an off day but I’ve not had that experience in Stroma!

This was our second visit as even though the service we received the first time wasn’t great we put it down to being an off day so returned but again the service from the same person wasn’t great at all. Walked in had to wait at least 5 minutes before being spoken to and the place was empty, the attitude was horrible , the man just grumped and put us at a table, ordered a drink and then our food there was no pleasantries had to ask for another drink even though our glasses were empty when he was at the table , he’s got a habit of mumbling and walking off which still talking to him. Not great and there won’t be a third try unfortunately as everyone else lovely. Older small guy with grey hair and waist coat.

The food here was absolutely delicious! The £19.50 for two meals is more than worth it! The delicious food was accompanied by EVEN BETTER service. Me and my boyfriend had to rush to a movie and once the lady working front of house was aware she made sure everything came out quickly (which we appreciated so much) she was absolutely fantastic as were all others working here. Will 100% be back soon. Thank you guys! ❤️

Great mix of dishes on the menu so no one feels left out when ordering, food is always tasty and well priced. Restaurant always nice and tidy with good service assured.

We have been eating out in Montrose on our 2 visits in Aug 21 and Apr 23. This restaurant is opposite the Shell garage over the bridge and we called in after filling up with fuel. It is very smart inside and we booked for a Friday night. Good Friday as it was. We had our best meal of the week, nicely served with good quantities. We had English food but the restaurant was quite busy with locals who obviously like the range of curries on offer and they looked appetising. So when we next return, this will be on our 'go to' list.

Unaware that it was Mother’s Day in UK so the restaurant was pretty much full. Anyway after a short wait the manage to get me a table. A busy night but waiters and kintchen managed very well, I had Indian food and it was excellent.

I had to write a review for Stroma just to let everyone know just how good the food is and the choices between delicious Indian food and hearty British cuisine. On our most recent visit we chose the Indian menu and it was probably the best Indian food I have had for years. The service is excellent and the girls serving had the time to chat and have a laugh. I guarantee it won’t be long until we return.

I have been disappointed by a lot of Indian restaurants recently. Eating here was great, the food was amazing and the prices low. I would definitely recommend visiting Stroma if in Montrose.

Eclectic menu and all food was presented was tasty, hot and presented beautifully. The curry sampler was excellent. Shrimp starter and potato wedges very good. Chilean Sauv Blanc was chilled and accompanied food well. Hats off to kitchen staff for consistency of food. The lady who served us was professional and efficient even though a neighbouring table suggested there was a shortage of staff. She served our table (2) a table for 4 and one for 5 at the same time Impressive since the menu is extensive. Thank you for a great experience....we will be back Date visited Tuesday 9th August 5pm

Montroseの港を確認するために来たところ、ランチタイムになり、人気も少ない週末の小さな港町でどこも開いていないので はと思って探したところ、橋を渡った角に小さなビストロ。インド系の料理も提供する変わったお店でしたが、ランチメニューのローストビーフが、安価で美味しい。典型的なイギリス料理で飾りは何もないのですが、ランチ定食の感覚で満足しました。

Best curry outside of Bradford!! Fantastic restaurant, faultless. I had the Chicken Tikka Jalfrezzi, which was exceptional.

The food was excellent but the waiter could have been more friendly. We all ordered our off the Indian menu and the food was as good as I’ve tasted anywhere, and better than most. The restaurant is well decorated and we n a great position overlooking the harbour. Our only slight gripe was our waiter. Whilst he did everything correct, brought water when we asked etc. he seemed to do it grudgingly. The more he did this the more we praised and thanked him. Maybe he was having a bad day but a bit if positive interaction goes a long way.

What a lovely restaurant. Has a very extensive menu and the food was delicious. I loved that you had a nice table with a clean white tablecloth! Made the meal very special. Service was prompt, efficient and very helpful and friendly. The staff really worked hard and made the restaurant run like clockwork! Well done everyone .. but especially the Glaswegian waitress! She was a star!

Popped into this bistro on a day trip to Montrose. Food was delicious, facilities clean. Excellent value for money.

Family meal at one of our favourite places. Was quiet with social distancing in place. The 2 waiting staff wore masks and were super polite throughout. Food, as usual was top notch, just a pity the Thali wasn't on the menu but understandable why not....

We tried. Number of Indian restaurants for take away during the lockdown and this was the best. Great Chicken Rogan Gosh, Chicken Jalfrezi and the Egyptian Kebab, which comes with a curry sauce, was superb.

I have visited Stroma twice now within a month. The first was for a birthday meal, the second for an early mother's day meal. The first visit was pleasant, fast enough service, good menu choice, the food was enjoyable but not amazing. The second time...

We had the mixed Pakora which was very tasty but a little bit soggy - would have preferred it more crispy. The Chicken Tikka Chasni was superb and the Chicken Tilkka Mirchi Jalfrezi was nice and spicy so overall a very tasty carry out

We have been here a few times and it is really good. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The Curry's are great. You don't always need to book in the week but it's better to do at weekend.

Been for meals a few times and overall the food is good, the welcome from the very grumpy waiter less so, but they do a very varied menu, lots of curries as well as other less spicy dishes. Prices are reasonable as are the portions. Our meals were nice but the dessert menu quite limited, the apple pie was just ok, tasted salty and a bit stale, the custard bland. The young waitress was very friendly and attentive without being overbearing.

We popped in for an evening meal and it was really good. Nice service, sourroundings are a bit spartan but the food was delicious. highly recommend a visit if you are in the area, they also serve lunches which I will bear in mind next time in the area.

I enjoyed a lovely korma whilst out for dinner for a family members birthday, staff were lovely and helped us get everything we needed although the way they were treated was horrendous, hats off to them for doing such an excellent job because I would never be able to work in a resteraunt if I was hounded at the way that the young girls were, the woman that took our order was very rude to the younger staff members although they were doing an excellent job and were doing everything around the resteraunt whilst she was standing visibly doing not very much, well done girls, you done a faultless job! The food was excellent so will be back, hopefully to see the staff being treated better next time!

Just had a meal at Stroma.the staff were extremely pleasant and very efficient and the food was fantastic.Thats the fourth time we have been and it's been great each time.

The Stroma Bistro is situated on the corner Wharf Street and Bridge Street, It was dark when our party of six arrived and unfortunately I was unable to see the outside of the building.Parking: We were unable to park outside the restaurant as a result our designated driver had to park some distance away.When we entered, we were met with a cacophony of noise because the place was busy, however we were told our table was ready and one of the staff took out outer clothing and showed us to our table. As soon as we were seated, we were presented with the menu asked for our drinks order, our drinks appeared nearly immediately.The Stroma Bistro has a very comprehensive selection of dishes both Europeans and Curry, I had looked at the online menu and had decided on the Lasagne my friends all plumped for curries in one verity or another, (I would recommend viewing the menu before you go as it wile take you some time to read it all).The food: My Lasagne was delicious, it was piping hot served with chips and salad, my friends all cleared their plates and from the comments they made I know that they were happy with their repast. Only one of our party ordered desert a “Baileys type cheesecake” ordered with three spoons and of course they shared and declared their satisfaction. Coffee followed and again it was hot and strong and just what was necessary after such a good meal.The Staff: we were looked after by tree staff members, one Russian lady, one Polish lady and a Scotsman, all were very efficient, friendly and professional and took part in some friendly banter from us, which made the evening more fun and bumped up their tip.As to the cost of the meal, I don’t know as was treated by my family, however the prices are outlined on the menu.We had a delightful meal served by nice people. Would I go again? Certainly. Would I recommend the Stroma Bistro? Definitely.

The food at the restaurant is absolutely excellent good choices on the menu. Staff are very friendly and try their best however they need training in what they should be doing how to work in a restaurant and the place really needs a good manager to co-ordinate service properly as it is the quality of service that lets it down which is a pity when the food is so tasty.

Overall the meal was nice apart from the apple pie which was definitely soggy and not crusty it also tasted foosty. The table service was good and as there was no one else in at the time of our visit was quick. Unsure if the meal was value for the money spent.

The take away is superb. The is a very good menu . In particular the Indian dishes are fab .this can all be ordered on line and you are well informed when it will be ready . It is defo one of the best restaurants in the area

We enjoyed the restaurant so much, we came back the next night. Both meals were fantastic and the service was very friendly. The menu is varied. We had Indian the first night and salmon the second night and both were superb

We eat at Stroma a few times a year and each time I think the food gets better and better. The naan bread is as good as I have ever had. The service is always fun and relaxed and the Indian cuisine sublime.

Das Lamm Madras war hervorragend. Chicken Dhansak war gut. Das Nan gut. Das Bier war kalt - was will man mehr :-)

Our 3rd time here. As usual, food it really good, the thali is a good choice. I would say, however, not as good as it has been. A couple of chicken dishes, the pieces were overcooked. Also, the service needs to be better organised and more friendly. Some training wouldnt go amiss. Hope this was an off day due to a busy Father's Day.

Food was lovely as always. Service terrible. Made to feel everything we asked for was a bother. Even felt uncomfortable asking for another drink. Obviously a bad day!!! But has put me off going back if this is the service you get!!

Overlooking the River South Esk, with on street car parking opposite and home to heroic Bamse the Sea dog, we thoroughly enjoyed our authentic curry meal. Portions were enormous. Recommend the Kathmandu vegetable curry and the sizzling Chicken tikka. The warm naan was so fresh. Well worth a visit.

We recently visited Stroma after always going to Roo’s Leap with the family. We were welcomed by the staff who took our jackets and offered us a drink while we waited for our table. Huge variety of food (curries, burgers, fish, pasta, etc.), however we were recommended by a friend to go with a curry. Stroma had a speciality Indian ‘Thali’ on the specials board, a tapas style range of 7 small dishes of meat and vegetable Indian dishes - it did not disappoint! All the food looked and tasted very fresh and had great flavour!

I was here with my family for my step dads birthday. I can not fault the food as it was great! Although the way that the owner (I think) treated their staff was horrendous! I myself have worked in hospitality and have never been spoken to the way that the waitresses did tonight!

Just back from Stroma. 6 dish thali with accompanying sides and best Steak pie I have ever tasted. Amazing!

Our first and certainly not our last takeaway from Stroma in Montrose was first class all the way from easy online ordering to the copious quantities of amazing food cooked perfectly and on time. Probably the best takeaway we have ever had. Very good value.

Lovely premises, friendly staff and good choice of menu for traditional high tea. The steak pie was let down somewhat by rather watery gravy but rest of meal was fine.

Went here for the first time tonight 06/03. Best curries we had tasted in a long long time. The restaurant is set out nicely, cosy with a nice atmosphere. The only complaint I would have is the service. When we first arrived the older guy at the desk was not very welcoming, abrupt, not very welcoming. There was a young lad serving ,think he was pretty new. He had some little mishaps, think this was more to do with training. 10 out of 10 to the lad, pleasant, attentive, so helpful, a genuine guy eager to please.

Had a fantastic meal here ,we had the set menu and throughly enjoyed the meal with good service .reasonably week prived for a quality meal

Visited this restaurant last Friday for a xmas meal. This is a nice restaurant with a very varied menu of both Indian and British dishes. we opted for the xmas menu on this occasion. The food was very nice.

Had a staff meal out for Xmas. Thanks for good food and service. I had the best venison I've ever had so tasty and melted in mouth. Sticky Xmas pudding was something different and a great idea. Hoping to be back soon.

Been here a few times, its always been grest nice and busy with good staff, the festive menu was on this time and there was plenty of choice and a good price. There was 4 of us this time we all had different mains and all happy although the salmon with cajun prawns was quite "hot".. Will return and also great for a carry out Curry !!

I’m a regular visitor to Montrose but Stroma had never been on my radar. It’s a bit out of the way but the walk was definitely worthwhile. Very nice decor and a great menu with superb food. I’ll definitely be back

We had a delicious meal including the thali. Loads of food, served with a smile and great advice. We were astonished how reasonable the bill was which made a welcome change! Would definitely recommend Stroma and will visit again when we are in the area.

We have visited Stroma on many occasions for lunch, high tea and dinner and each time we have had a great experience. The staff are friendly and the curries are authentic and excellent value for money.

Lovely meal at reasonable price but go hungry because portions are large! We were lucky to be able to walk in and be served because I think you normally have to book. This, for us, was a spur of the moment visit and it was very pleasant.

We are a local couple who have been to Stroma on several occasions.. mainly it was very good, excellent if you like Indian food as the chef is Indian. However, I feel that the menu is too big and varied and they are out of their depth as it’s s tiny kitchen and the carry out service seems to take precedence. The staff are under trained - the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. There seems to be no direction from the owner who acts as “front of house”. Our table was booked for 7pm what a palaver to get even a drink! Eventually led to our table - no drink! Still waiting.. then by 7.45 we were still waiting for starters. In the meantime the kitchen was rapidly firing out take aways! It was a shambles. This is not the first time we’ve been let down with poor service. In all honesty they’ve become a victim of their own success, as the place itself is lovely with a good atmosphere and decor. They just need to get more trained staff and do less carry outs! It’s letting the place down - people are aware of this and avoiding it ona weekend got this reason. Such a shame.

Having decided to take the A92 coast road from Stonehaven down to Dundee looked for a place to eat and decided on this restaurant.

We had only the Indian food, so cannot comment on the rest of the menu. We had the curry selection (there is a name for it, I'm afraid I cannot remember) and it was absolutely delicious. Each one was full of flavour and the meats were tender and well spiced. Was such good value for such amazing food. Staff were also friendly and professional. If I find myself in Montrose I would return.

Wow, amazing! Loved it! Food was amazing. Didn't check menu before we booked and was so happy to have a thali on the menu. We ordered 3 and the waitress was great, informed us of the size and recommended that 2 would be enough. That was certainly the case as there was heaps, especially as my great aunt is 87 and doesn't eat as much as she would like to . My grani had the fish and my sister fajitas, both really enjoyed and portions great. Staff were super lovely. I would really recommend this establishment and Montrose in general. What a great bunch o folk

Have enjoyed a number of meals here and every time the food is excellent. The restaurant now has a takeaway service that is also really good, including their handy app for ordering

If I had been a little hungrier I would have taken the special Thali curry tapas style lunch menu. As it was I did enjoy a great bowl of split pea soup with crusty bread and a good pint of Belhaven Best.

Big space but quiet and comfortable. Staff are friendly and helpful and there is a variety of interesting dishes to choose from. There are some unusual fusions as well as standard Scottish fare.

Stroma is an excellent restaurant. When I first went I had chicken goujons which were nice, but when I went back I had one of their curries and I now can’t have anything else off of the menu! My favourite is the Garlic masala and garlic naan. Can’t wait to visit again.

Today I went with family for 4 dinners.The battered fresh haddock I had was the best I`ve ever eaten in my life. It was very fresh and beautifully cooked. The other three meals were also equally delicious. The service was quick and efficient. Our waiter was very attentive and pleasant. Great ambiance and lovely location. I rate Stroma`s 5 star.

We were camping in the area and saw the reviews so decided to give it a try. The staff were excellent and very friendly, The food was delicious and the cost was far cheaper than we were expecting. Highly recommend, will be back.

Firstly a big thank you to the attentive staff and marvellous chef in providing us with an excellent meal and night out.

Visited her on Friday night with another couple. Were sat in the bar area for a pre dinner drink, first impressions were it is a well presented restaurant. After drinks, we were shown to our table. No menus were really needed as there is a thali special (a thali is an Indian meal with several different dishes of smaller portions, similar to a mezze), we all had that bar 1. I have to say, having been in India in March, this was as good as any dish we had there, lamb, chicken, prawns, rice, breads, a lovely daal. The staff were very friendly and the wine was very well priced, nothing ridiculous. At one time, the place was full, lovely atmosphere, people of all ages as it also looked like they did western food. My only gripe is they didn't have any Indian beer, for example Cobra or Kingfisher. I would definitely recommend this place and will definitely be back soon!!

Was recommend to us to try and we arrived around 6 pm, promptly seated and attended to very quickly.

Treat there staff like crap don't care about them the food is terrible wait like 30-60 mins just for the starter to come out really expensive will never go back would never recommended

We've been as a couple, as a family and as an organised group of 20. The food has been fantastic every time. Friendly, relaxed service. Good size portions. Would recommend the Indian menu choices but the English ones are just as good - including the fish and chips! Limited choice fixed price two course meal is a real bargain and has never disappointed.

Visited Stroma with my parents for a belated Father’s Day meal. Our booking was received swiftly and on arrival we were shown to our table straight away. The staff were detailed and pleasant and the owner/chef also helped advise on meal selection. The food we received was excellent! They do not skimp on dish size, we all walked away very pleased by our meal. Will

Excellent indian .. one of my best indian i ate in my life ... locals suggested to go there and was more than we expected... portions are big and rich in taste .., place is nice and staff really swt !! Thanks to waiteress that suggested me to go and visit the lighthouse.. was a short trip because we definitely see us again !!

What a find. Indian based restaurant with a great selection of your favorite dishes. Other choices available my wife is not a curry eater and had Coq au vin. A member of our party wanted to book a taxi but no available owner offered and in fact took her and her husband back to the guest house.. Now that's service

We have been to this bistro previously but this was the first time we sampled their curries and all 3 of us were absolutely delighted with them One of our group who specifically likes curries told the chef that this was the best currie she had ever had.

This restaurant was recommended to me and I was not disappointed. Menu extensive. Staff pleasant. Food extremely tasty, fresh, well presented.. Allowed to enjoy our meal and not rushed. Great Value. Will have to return to enjoy more of their appetising menu

I really don’t like leaving poor reviews. We’ve dined here as a family several times for High Tea and have had mixed experiences. The food and service are really good 95% of the time, however after tonight I highly doubt we will be back. We had booked for High Tea for my in laws joint birthday. We weren’t told during booking that there was already a large part booked in and that there would be a potential delay in our food being prepared, nor were we told this when we arrived tonight. Had we known, we would have booked for a different day as dining with a 5 and 6 year old is challenging enough as it is without having to wait for food. In saying that, the restaurant still had several empty tables. Our order was taken and we were served our drinks and toast. 30 minutes later, the waitress told us ‘2 minutes and your food will be here’. 5 minutes later, we were told the same thing. Another 5 minutes pass and my mother in law asks what on Earth is going on. ‘Oh, 2 minutes’ was the reply again. By this point the children are nearly crying with hunger as they’ve only had half a slice of toast each and it’s now 6.15. Can I also point out that there is absolutely no colouring sheets and crayons provided for them. We normally have a quick service, so on this occasion we didn’t bring anything! Anyway, at 6.20 we are told ‘2 seconds’, at which point the waitress is told ‘No, you will bring the food out for the kids now!’ We watched the waiting staff take and complete take away orders before dealing with the dining in customers, who were paying a premium to be there. Why are the take seats dealt with to the detriment of the restaurant clientele? Meanwhile, another table of 4 have to be placated as they’ve waited longer than we have, and another table of 4 have waited 20 mins to put an order in!!

Friendly staff and good service with nothing too much trouble. Great selection of meals on the menu. My colleagues and I went for a selection of Indian dishes with advice from the waitress. Lovely mix of tastes. Recommended.

We decided spur of the moment to treat ourselves to a meal out. So we rang and booked a table for 2. So glad we did as the restaurant was busy. Greeted by the lovely owner and seated for a drink. We were offered our table promptly and did not feel rushed on making choices from menu. We ordered the 2 curries and Naan Bread. The curries were full of flavour and the bread was obviously homemade just superb. Every member of staff we dealt with was friendly and helpful. To finish we ordered to liqueur coffees again perfect. Having just moved to Montrose, Stroma will definitely be our go to place for a meal out. Thank you so much we will definitely be back.

This restaurant was recommended to us by locals. We had not booked having just arrived in the town on a Friday evening for a short break. Although pretty fully booked the manager found us a table after a short wait and we enjoyed a really nice meal with prompt friendly service. The variety of meals on the menu was impressive and we would go back again if visiting the area.

Whilst the food was good, the managerial skills where incredibly questionable and ultimately ruined our night.

Food was good. Service a little slow. Atmosphere was good until we were asked to vacate to another location within. Due to a complaint from a small minded group. Whilst we accept we were a hen party we were in no way loud,rowdy, rude or using offensive language. We were a little merry but managements handling could have escalated a volatile situation and unfortunately ended up ruining what had otherwise been a lovely day. We won't be back.
