What a little gem of an inn! We arrived & were greeted by the lovely Sam. Our room was lovely, clean & spacious with everything we needed for the night. We had a delicious & quality dinner & a lovely hot breakfast. Friendly staff & locals in the bar along with their schnauzer Ginny. We only wished we had booked 2 nights! Thank you for a lovely stay….highly recommend 👍🏻

This is a very attractive, clean pub with a very interesting menu. When we went it was very cold (we only saw one radiator)although fires had been put on) - and it smelt faintly of sewage. Maybe that was a temporary thing. We’d definitely go again in the hope that it was.

This was exactly the sort of quaint, hospitable inn we had been hoping for on our travels back down from Scotland. It was a Friday night and doing a roaring trade, both from locals and the overnight guests, which was all handled with total aplomb. Walking into the dining room to see an incredible specials board that included the likes of hare and goose, we were sold. All the food was deliciously fresh and clearly put together with genuine passion. Service was delightful and the whole pub had great ambience - what more could you want? Our room was very comfortable, and we rolled into bed very happy indeed. It really is a fantastic staging post and an atmospheric alternative to the hotel chains of Carlisle.

Travelled 40 mins for a meal with family after looking at an online post. Waitress serving was clueless and bored. When asked what the "pie of the day" was, the answer was "onion and ale", when asking somewhat bemusingly, if it was a vegetarian special, the answer, we think, was "no", but nobody knew. We later found out that is was Steak and Ale by listening to another waiter advising customers what the specials actually were. No idea what Largers were being served either, at the bar, 2 metres away. £9 for a child's meal of chicken goujons chips and peas. Arrived without peas. When asked about the missing veg, we were told they were out of stock. We knew this as they were not on the plate but were asked "do you want me to see what veg is available?" Do you not know?? The options fed back were carrots or pea puree. Really?! For a 10yr old..... chips with carrots or a pea puree!? Surely the staff do communicate here at some point? Cold veg. Concrete Risotto (more than al dente) and tasteless tartare sauce. No discount offered or discussed when mentioning the rebel AWOL peas when paying quite a substantial bill. A disappointing meal, ridiculously over priced average food served by young, uninterested staff who have no idea what is going on. Far better and cheaper available.

We chose this quaint little inn as a stopover on the way south from Scotland, we were highly impressed! The inn dates back to 1659 as a staging post for travellers, and there remains lots of original features to admire. The log burning stoves provide a warm cosy ambiance, residents lounge a quiet space to relax and the bar at a weekend is lively and welcoming. The food is outstanding, local fish and game feature, with daily specials all presented beautifully. The rooms are well appointed and nicely decorated. The staff are attentive and very friendly, the standard of service was excellent. We have been informed that they welcome Motorhome stopovers in their well suited carpark but please take a drink in the bar or eat in the restaurant. We will be back!!!

We were originally a little sceptical about eating at The String of Horses, as we had a dog with us and thought we’d have to sit outside. However, Colin and his team were very flexible and were happy to ‘bend’ the house rules, so we could eat inside. The pub is steeped in history with the most incredible carving on the bar and surrounds dating back to 1694 (carved into the bar itself) .The food was superb, so much so, we booked to return the following night. Recommend the lamb, fish and chips, pan fried chicken risotto and Steak and ale pie. The Sticky toffee pudding is also to die for. The pub was reasonably quiet when we visited, ideal for our nervous little dog. Staff were super attentive band friendly! Will be back…

Positives - Excellent atmosphere in traditional local Pub with roaring Log Fire, friendly, professional staff who made you feel welcome from the start. Didn't experience bedrooms but had a previous tour and seemed very Cosy. Not so positive - went here with great expectations but unfortunately we were let down by the food.We were impressed by the honesty of staff when challenged about pate' which I was really looking forward to as 'home made' pate' but which was actually bought in and to be fair they gave me it on the house. Black pudding and Haggis was deep fried and full of fat. The Gammon meal was OK but overall the menu was overpriced for what was provided. Presentation was not great by the chef. I had a family meal at a Pub just around the corner from SoH and the contrast was obvious for presentation, quality and price. The new owners need to up their game if they want to attract new and consistent customers. I have been brutally honest with my review and hope the owners take on board my comments as they have the potential to be a much better Business. I wish them well and may visit in the future to hopefully provide a more positive review.

Only using the restaurant to celebrate a family birthday. We were looking forward to the visit after not being there for a number of years. We ordered our meals but were disappointed with the size of the portions. I ordered extra chips to go with my meal but they were used to top up the meals of the men folk as there wasn’t many on their plates, though there weren’t many in the extra portion either and I queried how much I was paying for them. I mentioned about the size of the chips on their plates and The waitress said she would get some more and find out how much the chips were but never came back with the answer but came back with extra chips to make up the other plates, of which we were charged for as well. The steak pie my son ordered arrived and was black burnt on the top. I told him to send it back but he said he would eat it. The Cumberland sausage ordered looked well done too with a hard skin and must be cooked by dropping it in the fryerIf you like a decent size portion of food I would suggest you maybe give it a miss. We were rather disappointed and were trying to give a local business a try but doubt we will be back for a good while. We would have been better going a bit further out and going to the Auctioneer.

We have just had two days in the String of Horses coaching Inn at Faugh just 20 minute drive from Carlilse. We booked this 18months ago and due to illness have been unable to take the break until now and many thanks to Colin the proprietor who has kindly worked with us to visit. We had a standard room No. 7 which had a shower and was so warm and cozy and had everything you could want. It was spotless! We overlooked the garden at the back and it was really quiet and you could see the two pigmy pigs in their garden. We ate there both nights and the food is superb and plenty of it. The main point that makes this Inn special is the service from the friendly team and Colin is around all the time too which is great. It also has three log fires and a lovely lounge area. If you want comfort and relaxation go on treat yourself. Thanks Colin for a fab time eventually! We will be back x

Arranged a family night out and get together and picked The string of horses based on its reviews, there was six in our party and we were not disappointed. The parking is excellent, all our rooms were very well presented, we had a king sized bed that was extremely comfortable. Colin is such a hard working man and his strive to deliver excellence is obvious, it’s a beautiful quaint place with welcoming open fires, the thing that sets it apart from all the rest is definitely the food, it’s such a high standard. I had steak and followed the chef recommendation on how it should be cooked and it was devine, the staff are all attentive and eager to please, nothing was too much trouble ( 3 fussy eaters) The breakfast was of the same standard with good quality ingredients and a good choice too, this will be our first of many visits Well done String of horses for such an enjoyable visit.

We stayed at the String of Horses having been given a ‘red letter day’ voucher for two nights. The accommodation is clean and the beds comfortable. Our room had only a shower an there was no heated rail to dry the towels. Our room was not cleaned nor the bed made on the second day. I believe this was an honest mistake but must say this is the first time ever that this has happened to me. The staff were apologetic. The upside to our stay was the friendly staff and excellent food. Good choice and top end quality. Breakfast also good but maybe lacking a little choice if you prefer continental. All in all had a good stay but feel the room should have been more red letter day standard and the outside areas need a little TLC

Purchased a "Buy a gift voucher" as a treat for my husband and I for Christmas and found it on the list of locations as we wanted to finish walking Hadrian's Wall. It is quite close to both Carlisle and Brampton. The String of Horses looked good on the website and was everything it said. Quirky, friendly, busy in the middle of the week and the owners very hospitable. We stayed for two nights and had a very spacious, comfy bed with the added bonus of a jacuzzi bath just what was needed after walking the wall. The food has to be the hotest and best quality using a local butcher with plenty of choice on the menu. The breakfast simple either Cumbria breakfast, vegetarian or eggs bendict which I chose - superb. We walked from Banks - Newtown then Newtown to Burgh on Sands before the final leg from Burgh on Sands to Bowness on Solway. Fab few days with achievement of finishing Hadrian's Wall with a good sleep and good food at the end of it. Would thoroughly recommend this place to stay.

We were staying local for the weekend and pre booked a table . Shared starters of Black Pudding and Battered Haggis which were tasty albeit the Black Pudding I felt overdone for my palate. Followed this with mains ...for me the Special of Haddock and Chips and for my wife Scampi and Chips ....both came with peas and tartare sauce. Portion sizes were very generous, so much so we couldn't finish either dish. Would suggest skip starters unless you have large appetites. Overall we enjoyed the ambience of the String of Horses, certainly enhanced by we guessed visitors and locals alike enjoying a drink/food in this oldie world village pub ,certainly the pint of beer went down very well.

Booked here for three nights on a deal and it was fantastic value for money. Having said that, I would have been happy to pay the normal price as we had a lovely time. The owner, Colin, met us on arrival and although the bar didn't open until 6pm, he offered us drinks if we wanted them. We decided to wait as we had planned to eat there on the first night and we pleased we made the choice to do so. I had the black pudding starter, which is always a must when we go up north and it was one of the best I have had. We followed that with Fajitas, a fillet steak and their take on a lasagne but with chilli. All were great meals and we were well looked after by the staff. The rooms were clean and warm and the breakfasts fine. The only slight negative was the lack of somewhere hot in the bathroom so the towels could dry (room 10). A heated towel rail would solve the issue. In saying that, it didn't detract from the visit and we would not hesitate to stay again.

We came across this little pub on the Internet by chance and how lucky were we. It was our wedding Anniversary so both myself & my wife just wanted a nice get away somewhere quiet. The pub is located in a lovely little village aprox 10 mins outside of Carlisle. It's full of character something which appealed to us. As soon as we entered the premises you could tell the place has been lovingly looked after. Our room was immaculate with plenty of Tea & coffee supplies. The bathroom also was immaculate with plenty of towels and shampoos. The cleanliness even goes as far as the spare toilet rolls being individually wrapped. We had a few drinks before food at the bar where as the evening went on seemed to have more residents than locals which created a nice atmosphere. The food menu has a good selection of different meals from 1 to 3 courses. We both went for the special which was Fish & Chips....it was massive!...more like a shark!..lovely and tender falling apart nicely. After a good peaceful nights sleep we enjoyed a great breakfast. For us this included a big bowl of fresh melon, strawberries and grapes followed by a full English breakfast with wholemeal toast and coffee....it was lovely. All in all our stay here was lovely, absolutely nothing negative to say about the place. The landlord had time to speak to everyone just being friendly and full of helpfull advice. If it's a stay here or in Carlisle I'd deffinatly recommend here. We would definitely return to stay again truly a Hidden Gem.

Had a one night stay in this quirky old pub. The food was good but felt the room was overpriced for an average room and stay. The staff were very helpful and friendly.

Prachtige oude inn uit 1650, gezellige authentieke inrichting. Kamers (familiekamer) zijn ruim, schoon en comfortabel. En het eten beneden in het restaurant is heerlijk! Aanrader dus!

Terrific local atmosphere and great food. The fish and chips were huge and the local beer terrific. We felt right at home and the staff could not have been more gracious

Cosy, friendly bar with locals and visitors. Both our meals were excellent and they had a selection of 3 or 4 real ales.

I'm lucky enough to live only a few miles from here and on my first visit was pleased by the beer selection and the fine bar menu. Old fashioned bar is a plus feature. Well worth searching the lanes to find it.

We spent our 2 night break in the hotel, the food was varied and did not break the bank, serving times were excellent, we managed to get Barefoot, white zinfandel, not available in a lot of places. Staff were good and very friendly. A part time local kept us chatting at the bar which was nice also, thanks John.

Went here on a Thursday night with friends after reading about it in the AA pub guide. I was extremely impressed by the quality of food on offer. The menu seems to cover all tastes with a lot of vegetarian choices, Italian, Moroccan, Cuban and Caribbean (quite a wide range). The bar scene is good with a number of local real ales on offer and the service was alright, but nothing amazing. We were all fans of the food and would definitely recommend it to others to make a visit to. The Caribbean chicken with rice and spicy beans was really impressive as were the Dulce de Leche pancakes (loads of bananas, caramel and ice cream). If I lived in the area then I would definitely make regular visits to here for the food alone.....

We had a very nice meal and later were delighted to speak with the Proprietor/ chef. It is not often that you meet Costa Rican proprietor in the depths of rural England!

Ate at the String of Horses and had a first class meal. Locally sourced top qualify food cooked to perfection. Very friendly couple and lovely young team helping. Don't come if you are not really hungry - portions very large.

My partner chose pub food (sausage and mash) and I chose the Mexican --- both were well prepared, tasty, and more generous than we could finish! Personal, kind service.

A nice welcome and a varied menu with a latin influence. Plenty of variety including veggie options and daily specials. Plenty of parking and within about 15 minutes of Carlisle.

Bought what I thought was a good Wowcher deal to stay here for two nights. Rang to book a Sunday and Monday evening. We were told the restaurant was closed on a Monday but there were restaurants nearby for a meal. Got back from nice day out on the Monday evening to find there is nowhere nearby open for a meal and the bar was closed!!! We did not stay Monday, drove home! Never Again.

The drink is reasonably priced and the menu is also a bit different, with a nod to Spanish/North African cuisine. Perhaps a little expensive for the standard (which is good but not exceptional) and presentation could be more interesting. Members of staff very pleasant.

You are rather a captive audience if staying at the Inn and sometimes as we know this can be a very bad thing......however prices were great value, food excellent, good choices and a special of the day board....very worthwhile and nice 17th century beamed pub setting too

Attended a reunion with friends here, private dining on the terrace, the service was appalling, they had 3 large parties and obviously insufficient staff. The starter arrived some 25 minutes late, tepid soup, not very appetising, then a 55 minute wait for the mains, overcooked beef and lukewarm veg, no gravy, the a wait for sweet, sticky toffee pudding, can't go wrong with that, oh yes they could, pudding had sort of crust on it and was served with a miniscule portion of ice cream. All in all a huge disappointment and not what we expected, they really need to up their game.

The best coffee in Brampton! We love coming here for coffee and breakfast. Very friendly owner, Emma and her lovely baristas work hard to get your order just right. There are a great range of coffee, tea and home made cakes as well as savoury hot food. The place is often bustling with cosy chat, interesting art work on the walls (Emma has artist’s displays each month) and it’s also dog friendly too. Just a great place.

Accommodated a last-minute booking due to poor bookings at other local eatery. The food was exceptional and plentiful. Staff were very welcoming and nice to chat to. Bar was fully stocked, and overall, the price was very reasonable for a couple.
