Six ladies for lunch. Lovely surroundings and garden view. Hotel is local to all of us, so good potential for future business. Food very disappointing!! Minute steaks were Thick and tough !!! No choice of how to be cooked, not even mustard offered. ( Tomato sauce and mayo were served !!!!!!! ) Steak knives needed, plate full of chips, presentation …zero. Breaded chicken was very dry and incredibly thick portions. Boiled potatoes in skins had been sent out with large black marks and did not look good. Waitress frowned upon any extra requests and almost reprimanded us for requesting more French dressing. When she asked if everything okay and we mentioned very tough steak, she simply did not respond. Nowhere did it tell us that cash was not accepted. I was made to feel uncomfortable for not knowing their policy as it had been in place for some time !!!!!!!!!!! What was missing was good old fashioned good service, on this occasion the customer was NEVER right !!!!!!!!!

We ate at this lovely restaurant whilst staying at this beautiful hotel. We had breakfast each morning and we also had a 3 course evening meal on our first night too which was wonderful. The food was very tasty and presented well and also served by really pleasant staff who could not have done more.

The old house and the restaurant area looked inviting but each of the dishes the three of us had were unattractive and almost inedible. The only tasty thing about my vegan burger was the sliced gherkin on the side. After we finished we waited half an hour for them to take away our plates. We chose from the desert menu they then gave us but when after another ten minutes they had not come back to take our order we gave up and left.

35th Wedding Anniversary treat. Steve booked an afternoon tea at Stratton House to celebrate 35 years of marriage. We had stayed there on our wedding night. When booking the member of staff was more concerned about taking payment, than registering this special occasion. The afternoon tea was wonderful. But everything else was not. Broken chair, dirty glass, broken patio door. No tea or coffee replenished. No suggestion of a glass of champagne. Crockery white and uninteresting, not even a daffodil on the table to make it look special. Would have stayed for a drink after, but decided not too. Such a shame

Looking forward to Sunday Lunch after seeing a Facebook post. The most terrible service from start to finish! Don’t eat red meat so asked about gravy. Server would go & find out….Ordered drinks & meal. Starter came, no drinks after numerous reminders. Finished starter still no drinks! Water arrived with something floating in it? That had to go back. Drinks finally arrived after we had to go to other staff ourselves & ask where drinks where, they hadn’t been added to our order by our server. At this point I ordered a glass of red as it had taken so long for first drink! Champagne that finally arrived was was Luke warm & disgusting I had to ask again about gravy as server didn’t bother coming back & then told me it was beef gravy on everything & at this point decided to tell my husband there was no lamb left??! For me this was absolutely appalling as I’d told him at the point of ordering I didn’t eat red meat at all, the fact that my lunch would have been covered in beef gravy was just awful! Lunch came… I was horrified at the tiny bit of chicken with a bone & a Yorkshire pudding with beef gravy in it! Seriously…. That went back instantly & was replaced with a freezing cold Yorkshire and guess what no glass of wine…here we go again….reminder after reminder after reminder by this point we’d finished our lunch, with another reminder… Then I get bought a glass of champagne??? We’d had enough at that point it was absolutely time to go& will definitely not be back!!! Extremely disappointed is an understatement!!!

Not the best experience for either the food - which was uninspiring and bland or indeed service. Disappointing atmosphere considering the setting. Will look further afield for future trips with friends.

We thought we would have an evening meal at their restaurant as the 'Sample' online menu looked enticing. It started off really well with our table overlooking their lovely garden. We can see why their website menu was a 'Sample' menu because the choice for that evening was nothing like the 'Sample' one which got our attention in the first place. We ordered wine with our meal but this never arrived. Our starters arrived, still no wine which they didn't pick up on. I ordered Calamari which I had to send back as the Calamari rings had black blemishes on them. The waiter came over to show us that these had been taken off our bill at which point my husband pointed out that the wine we had ordered 50 minutes ago had not arrived. They offered to chase it up but we just asked if that could be taken off the bill too. The main meals were lovely though so you could say it ended on a good note.

Sadly it was very disappointing, dry sandwiches, lack of filling, scones that crumbled no matter how carefully you cut them, poor Guaita all round, But seemed that other guests were receiving lovely sandwiches and cakes different to ours !when we asked if we could have some other than cream cheese and ham, we were told chef has gone home so there were no other options, feel very cheated that we received a budget version. Also we had previously been and had been pleased !so we bought family gift vouchers, 4 couples all as dissatisfied as us so not a one of bad day .i later spoke to a manager who was pathetic and non committed to helping or try to put this right.

Went there for high tea, not bad. But a a few issues. The coffee was cold and took ages for things to come. The sandwich were ok, but thick sliced bread. cakes etc were of good quality. However the best of all were the scones and cream. They were excellent and would return for them alone.

A group of five called in for lunch, in the Bar as opposed to the restaurant. Strangely fresh pea risotto was not available, nor the chicken & leek pie. We settled on fish pies, a chicken burger & tuna Mayo sandwich. Fish pie was a very small portion, about enough to fill a coffee mug, It did however tasted quite nice, Prawns, cod & salmon in fair quantity. It came with veg according to the menu. That turned out to be just a couple of florets of broccoli ( excellently cooked though). Chicken filet burger was dry, although it was spicy as stated along with plenty of fries. Bread & butter pudding, I was tempted but after Christmas I decided to give it a miss. Glad I did, one of my fellow diners had it. Reminsant of nouveau cuisine, big plate smallest slice of pudding equal to a heaped desert spoon and a splash of custard Mains were c£13 deserts £7 Great location & good garden centre just 2 miles away

I usually like to write an informative review STAY AWAY it's RUBBISH. Just to mention it may be worth some staff being retrained in the art of customer services, the person that took our booking failed to mention if we had any dietary requirements (my husband can't eat butter or margarine) when we asked the waiter if they could make a couple of sandwiches without, he came back and said "the chef refused" and said as "they are pre made, kept in a fridge and that we should have mentioned it when we booked"!!! so I had a cream tea whilst he had a Luke warm coffee. Very poor choice of hotel on our part.

We had our anniversary dinner at the atrium, and it left us underwhelmed. We had a taxi booked to take us to the hotel but they arrived late to collect us, it was completely out of our control. Out of courtesy, we called ahead to say we would be 10-15 mins late, to which the receptionist replied we would probably miss our first couple of courses. For starters, the timing of that doesn't work out, but equally, it sets the tone for how this hotel treats its customers. We objected and talked to a manager who said they'd do the best to accommodate us being 10 mins late. Jeez, thanks. The kitchen must be so overworked we're grateful. We arrived and the receptionist asked if she could take our coats, it wasn't until the end of dinner when I went to the loo I saw that our coats hadn't been put away safely they were just put on a peg in the main thoroughfare. Had I known that I'd have kept it safely with me. We went to the atrium dining room to see 6 inward facing tables. We were the 5th to be seated. The room itself has very corporate decor, a few flipcharts and red marker pens wouldn't have looked out of place. The wine list is small and tops at £120 a bottle, unless there was another list we were unaware of. Our white burgundy was served in red wine glasses. We noticed that the folks at the next table had their white in white wine glasses. The 6th table of guests arrived and then food service started. For each course several wait staff queued up with dishes for all tables and then the one waiter that was allowed to interact with customers deposited them on the tables and then stood at the front of the class, I mean dining room, and announced to us all what the dishes were. A few courses in I found this batch processing of dinner to be tiresome as we had to wait for others to get their food, have swapped dishes explained privately and then he would address the room before we could eat - meaning our food was getting cold. The pace of dinner was therefore dependent on the slowest diner before the plates were cleared and the next course could begin. If someone went to the loo the service didn't wait and the food was delivered and announced without them - always hallmarks of high end dining. Cutlery wasn't laid it was plonked on the table for diners to set themselves. Any requests of the waiter were met with comments of why he was busy and we had to wait. When people part with their hard earned cash they want to feel special and appreciated. Tone is usually set at the top, which is where the inflexibility and batch approach to dinner must come from. I dont particularly like being shunted through a dinner experience en masse. Its a shame as the service detracted from the food, which was good but not special enough that I should be expected to experience it like a coach load of punters. My sympathies to the chef, i can only imagine the hardship that it is to cater for 12 covers in an entire evening, When dining out, you always remember how the place made you feel, and lord of the mayor's left us feeling meh. Maybe communal dining for £450 a pop just isn't for us.
