I have had the pleasure of videoing and photographing several suprise proposals at The Temple at Barnsley House and each time I visit, I am truly blown away by how beautiful this place is. Through each season it looks stunning and there are new florals to admire. Walking through the gardens, it is so peaceful and calming and hidden away. I absolutely love it here and am excited for the reopening!

I spent A few days at this amazing hotel almost 2 years ago. It was the most incredible experience I’ve ever had in any hotel I’ve ever spent in my life. And trust me when I say I’ve stayed in quite a few posh hotels. The staff were super friendly, comfortable room and had All the add-on facilities i.e. cinema, spa, garden etc. The hotel was fit for a king. I recommend anybody to stay there!

This is the best UK hotel we’ve ever been to. Everything is an impeccable taste and no detail is too small for the thoughtful staff. Service is friendly and efficient and you are treated as if you are really welcome, as opposed to so many hotels nowadays where you are treated as if you are a bit of a nuisance in their establishment. If you ask for anything in this hotel, it is there within seconds delivered by a smiling happy person who seems delighted to help you, by supplying you with that obscure phone charger that you forgotten to bring. The house and garden are absolutely magical and beautiful in a classic English country Garden way. The bedrooms are the height of quiet taste and luxury, without being remotely blingy or “boutique“. What a rare joy in these days where every hotel is trying to be insanely clever, unique and trendy, in a very millennial way, but mostly failing. Edit:- 3years later *** After having two fabulous family weddings here a few years ago, we were looking forward to returning to this special place. We booked dinner and although surprised that we had to search for staff members to greet us, we were initially very happily reminiscing . The cocktails were lovely and the food was fabulous as before. The only initial hint that things had changed was there was no maitre d’ in a smart suit. The lady in charge was wearing her own clothes. She seemed confused about the table numbers at times and the couple next to us received the wrong drinks which were subsequently added to our bill. Halfway through our meal, lots of casually dressed diners arrived all at once. I was sitting there in a dress and my husband in a jacket and shirt and everyone else was in jeans, woolly jumpers, trainers and one in a North Face fleece. The couple next to us explained that everyone there had been part of a cinema event including a film and two course meal for around £40. They had a different meal to us and were getting a bit fed up waiting for their pre preferred chicken supreme. This really pulled down our special occasion. Our meal cost over £200 so should have been a special experience. Instead we were amongst a large group of people who were having a much more casual and cheap experience. (No offence to them). When we were being refunded for the drinks mistake, I spoke to the aforementioned mangeress and she denied this. She said they were paying exactly the same as us. So either the couple at the table next to us were lying or my googling was incorrect (£46 for the Cinema and supper experience) or she was lying. I cannot fault our delicious food. I understand the chef is leaving for Calcot which is part of the original group. We shall be following him. The decor is currently the old tasteful linens and muted colours, but there is to be a makeover which I dread as I expect it will go ‘boutique’ and involve lots of jewel coloured velvet cushions and modern art. There was no sign of the fantastic previous manager (?Michel) but praise to the waiter and cocktail waitress who were excellent. As for the constant need to make it appeal to people in their thirties and forties, don’t forget the over fifties. They have the spare money to spend. Who knows what will happen to a once wonderful unique establishment. Next time, I would suggest that you advise fully paying diners that there is an event on which might affect their dining experience and give them the opportunity to come on another night.

Beautiful historical garden that you can wander if you go for Afternoon tea (fancy tea). Recommend the Pimm’s along with tea. A lovely tea treat. FYI, there is a quite pungent barnyard smell outside. Still special.

Simply incredible. You arrive and are welcomed by the friendly reception team. You then led to the room that was already ready! Super quick! The rooms are outstanding, one of the best we have ever stayed in and we have stayed in a lot of hotels in the cotsworlds! Vaulted ceiling and super comfy beds finished with outstanding views across the the gardens. The spa facilities were beautiful and the staff were super friendly and hot drinks facilities (nice touch) were maintained throughout the day. It is a very relaxed atmosphere what is nice. Towels and gowns available in beautiful wicker baskets for you help yourself too. The spa facilities are very elegant throughout and the outdoor pool is large and outstanding! What I loved about the spa is there is plenty of room for everyone and it is all spaced out. We had lunch in the lounge by the open fires surrounded by the Christmas decorations that we learnt that some are made from their garden in the summer time, left to dry out then the flower is sprayed. How outstanding is that? They have really thought about finishing touches and keeping things local and within old english. The hotel has lanterns at night time around the hotel that are candle lit adding the most beautiful atmosphere. There are torches on the side if wish to go walking at night! they have thought of everything to make it a fantastic stay. Of course If you need anything further JUST ASK the team are always happy to help we found and will deal with your request very quickly and efficiently. Last of all the restaurant is elegantly finished and is very sophisticated. We really liked the style. Simple but stunning. Food was exceptional and the waiter was fantastic! Very friendly and knew his stuff!(very knowledgeable), he was very efficient but very friendly and approachable. He could not do enough for us and we felt so looked after in fact we would say he serviced us to Michelin star level. Overall as I said I have stayed in a lot of hotels but Barnsley house has set the bar high! The House is outstanding and the rooms exceptional. The team running this hotel are at the top of their game. We were lucky to meet the manager Emanuele who is a true hotelier who is very hands on in the running of the hotel and is exceptional at making his guests experience the very best. Thank you for having us and we will be back. Cannot recommend highly enough so go and give BARNSLEY HOUSE a try and you will not be disappointed.

I like Barnsley House - third visit here - but there are some distinct pros and cons. Pros: A) Food is good, best Sunday roast I've found in the UK. B) Nice location - good walking, quintessential Cotswolds C) Gardens are beautiful D) Spa is great. Outdoor pool is a highlight (though it could be slightly hotter), overlooking a farm field. Super nice staff. Cons A) Service in the meal areas needs significant improvement. It's not polished and often felt like I was a child asking for something...I can't tell if they are understaffed, have certain waitstaff who dislike serving guests, or both. Anyway, expect to be rushed and made to feel like you are imposing. For example, they frantically set up lunch places during breakfast - lots of clanging, asking multiple couples to hurry up their meals (not just me) - this was not appropriate and was the final straw for me (there are other instances, but you get the point) B) Vibe is old. Median guest is a 50+ couple on a romantic getaway. Absolutely, nothing wrong with this but you will feel out of place if you are a 30 or even 40 something C) The rooms are now dated and need $ to bring them up to the standard the hotel strives for / as depicted on website. The overall footprint is small compared to other resorts, but it's awkward if you want privacy. Think just a few other couples at dinner and 2 wait staff rushing to take care of everyone with things falling through the cracks. Bottom line - well worth a first visit (I remember absolutely loving it) but after giving this place a few visits, I won't be returning.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Barnsley House Hotel, and I must say it was a truly wonderful experience. From the delicious dinner at "The Boot" restaurant to the exceptional service and the stunning garden, this hotel exceeded all of my expectations. The food at "The Boot" restaurant was a highlight of our visit. Every dish was not only delicious but also beautifully presented. It was a culinary experience that left a lasting impression, and I highly recommend trying it during your stay. Our room at the Barnsley House Hotel was nothing short of amazing. We were fortunate to stay in a spacious two-floor suite, which gave us plenty of room to relax and unwind. What made our stay even more special was the quick response from Sam, who efficiently arranged an extra bed for us, making our stay as comfortable as possible. The hotel's garden is an absolute gem. It's incredibly beautiful and expansive, and the staff goes to great lengths to maintain it to the highest standards. It's a serene and picturesque place to take a leisurely stroll or simply relax and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you. What truly sets the Barnsley House Hotel apart, though, is its staff. They are friendly, attentive, and genuinely warm in their interactions. Their dedication to making your stay exceptional is evident in every aspect of the hotel. In conclusion, I can't recommend the Barnsley House Hotel highly enough. It's a place where you can experience excellent dining, enjoy spacious and comfortable accommodations, and immerse yourself in the beauty of a meticulously maintained garden. I will never regret my decision to visit this remarkable hotel, and I encourage anyone looking for a memorable getaway to do the same. Thank you to the entire team at Barnsley House for making our stay so special.

Afternoon tea in the Potager, disappointing and overpriced. I bought a gift voucher for a friend in April when the cost was £25 and there was a great choice of either sweet or savoury tea. On going this week with 2 friends was very disappointed to find that they no longer offer any choice and the price increased to £32. The quality of the afternoon tea was very average and not at all up to the high standard when we came before in March

I booked Barnsley House to celebrate my friend’s engagement and upcoming emigration to Canada. 1. Before we arrived As soon as I made my booking the hotel’s amazing service started with a wonderful phone call with the reception manager Juliet who explained which suite she would allocate and whether that suite was ok, and also all the little touches she would put in the suite for my friend. Juliet also arranged 2 spa access bookings for us for both days and offered to make dinner bookings for us, all before we arrived. 2. Upon arrival When we arrived Juliet warmly welcomed us, remembering our call and kindly carried our luggage to the suite. She spent time explaining all the features of the suite (suite 19) which included a sauna and jacuzzi in the room!!!! She had also arranged twin beds which was extremely helpful. She gave us an overview of the grounds and the different walks that could be taken. 3. Dinner I was completing a religious fast the first day we were stay at Barnsley House and Juliet truly went above and beyond to arrange the most sumptuous meal within the specific parameters that the fast permitted. I’ve travelled before while completing this fast and I’ve never received such attention to detail and accommodation by a hotel and restaurant. The food itself was incredible - as all the vegetables are grown organically in the Barnsley House vegetable garden they tasted incredible and had all been cooked in accordance with my fast restrictions. The service by Eris was incredible and made us feel so taken care of and at home. 4. Hotel facilities A) spa The spa is stunning - hidden away in a real woodland getaway the outdoor hydra pool was dreamy and my friend and I spent 1.5 hours in there and we’re indulged with drinks and magazines (they have the best magazines ar Barnsley House!). We also enjoyed the Sun loungers, herbarium, sauna, steam and relaxation loungers. B) hotel lounges My friend adores a wood fire and Barnsley has 3 lounges with open fireplaces. We loved sitting after dinner in one of the lounges playing scrabble, reading vogue and harpers bazaar (thank you Barnsley House) sitting by the open fire. C) breakfast and lunch / afternoon tea Breakfast is a La carte - service is excellent, the room is beautiful and full of natural light. The food options are far ranging from smoothies, to granola, to vegetarian / vegan breakfasts. We had a cream tea lunch, the sandwiches for which were divine; especially the egg mayo. 5. Hotel grounds The grounds are stunning and amazingly maintained - I saw 4 different gardeners over my 2 days there. There are so many beautiful areas to sit and relax with comfortable cushions, the temple , the secret garden, main lawn - you’re truly spoilt for choice. 6. Location Barnsley House is located in the heart of the Cotswolds in between Bibury and Cirencester with lots of nice walks. 7. Suite Our suite was located close to the car park and was a standalone 2 floor suite. The jacuzzi bath was incredible with a tv right in front and some dreamy magazines. The toiletries in the suite smelt amazing and we loved all the little complimentary snacks. 8. Summary If you’re looking for luxury rooms, stunning gardens, high level service, wonderful grounds, relaxing lounges and facilities coupled with incredible food and privacy of individual suites - Barnsley House will be a great choice for you. Get ready to be pampered. Huge thanks to Juliet, Eris and all the wonderful staff who made our stay so comfortable and indulgent.

We recently stayed at Barnsley house for 1 night. Echoing others comments, rooms were pleasant. Bathroom was a wow factor, nice bath infront of a bay window was a nice touch. Unfortunately the water was cold on night 1 which was rectified, day 2 however even on full hot it was Luke warm, there was an issue although it was brushed under the carpet by the hotel. Wifi was very patchy in the room and didn’t work in the bathroom. We felt the level of service doesn’t match the price tag. A call at the time of our restaurant reservation (20:30) to find out when we were coming down was unusual. We were half way out the door and given the 20 steps we had to make to get down was unnecessary. It felt as though they were in a rush to close up and we were the delay. There was very little conversation from staff, minimal information given on arrival and no courtesy ‘how was your stay’ when we left. Given the fact they were also aware it was day 1 of our honeymoon as they specifically asked when I booked the room, there was no mention by anyone, these simple pleasantries go a long way. Like many others I travel a lot with work and have stayed in premier inn’s with better levels of customer care. I will add the food was very good when it came, and would certainly eat in the restaurant again. I just wouldn’t waste money on the hotel given the number of superb options around.

Not worth the premium price tag. We were really underwhelmed with our stay at Barnsley House. The grounds and house are beautiful but sadly the service and room amenities are lacking and not worthy of the rates they’re charging. We booked direct so were supposedly entitled to a room upgrade. When we queried this after checking in we were told there were no rooms available. This is despite almost all room types being available to book online for our stay on their website. The room was nicely decorated and modern but one of the most disappointing aspects, given Barnsley House is marketed as a premium hotel, was the lack of a turn down service, all other hotels we have stayed at a similar price point in the area provide this service. All of the rooms are advertised as featuring “a Nespresso coffee machine and a well-stocked pantry of goodies and snacks to ensure you feel right at home”. Given the way this was worded and similar to other premium hotels in the Cotswolds we expected the snacks provided to be complementary but instead they came with a price list. Perhaps this was naïve of us but with it being listed alongside the coffee machine we had assumed it was complimentary. The walls are incredibly thin (not unexpected in an old building) but when staff are putting away/rearranging glasses outside your room before 8am it doesn’t lend itself to a particularly relaxing night away from it all. The dinner was good but not exceptional. The food is incredibly over-priced (around £40 for most mains) for the standard you receive and the service is pretty sloppy. The staff are friendly but all seemed rather inexperienced. Our drinks were never topped up unless we asked and when we gave up and asked for a jug of water we were given a half full jug that had come from a recently vacated table. At the end, our coats that were taken when we arrived at dinner could not be located so we had to go and identify them. Nothing particularly serious but just not the level you’d expect. At check out I tried to bring up the fact we had not been overly impressed with our stay with the receptionist but he was entirely disinterested and was verging on rude.

We stayed here for 5 days in June. It’s a lovely place to stay the village is very quiet, not much happening but there are some many lovely places to drive to nearby. Our room was one of the suites with the bedroom upstairs, tea and coffee facilities provided and a fridge could have done with some coffee sachets the Nespresso provided I didn’t use, the biscuits were lovely but were not replenished which was a shame. Cosy log burner in the room but of course this wasn’t used as there was a heatwave while visiting. Breakfast was taken outside most mornings as the weather was fab but this was a little chaotic at times, with staff forgetting about orders and a few mishaps here and there, the tables not being set for outside dining etc, this sort of thing should have been all set up before guests arrived, but when breakfast was served it was all very nice. Evening meals were taken in the Potager or The Village Pub, enjoyed all our meals and a special mention to the manager of the VP who was very chatty and friendly, such a nice chap. We had a lovely time and spent an hour in the beautiful gardens each day enjoying the late afternoon sun.

My daughter booked a weekend Spa break for my birthday. Whilst the Spa was lovely, we couldn’t have any food or drinks in the Spa garden so had to go back to the main hotel, even though we couldn’t check into our room until after 3pm. The main public toilets in the hotel had a waste bin overflowing with paper towels and empty toilet rolls on the floor, obviously, housekeeping is not a key point! The waiting staff were polite, but not once either at dinner or breakfast were we asked if we required anything or was everything satisfactory! My main course was actually cold, but we had waited so long for our food nearly 2 hours that I just needed to eat it! Whilst it’s a lovely location and building, with well laid out bedrooms, the service does not warrant the £800 we paid for the one night we stay. Rather disappointing.

Dined here for our Wedding Anniversary - we came last in 2020 and didn't receive the full appropriate service. However, Amelia was was good as her word and promised to have us 'spoilt rotten'. As we sat down the champagne was already on ice as we had a table set in a more secluded part of the restaurant setting. We had some lovely sourdough bread options as a pre-starter with butter and olive/balsamic. No problems when we asked for some additions as we had already worked up appetites at the spa. The menu is quite restricted - but we actually prefer this as you know its all fresh and better to deliver high quality. My wife had salmon and I opted for the beetroot ravioli. Both were really well presented, although I would have preferred a slightly larger portion of the ravioli, but glad opted as it balanced the main. Both dishes extremely tasty with varying textures and could not really be faulted. Our lovely waitress kept the champagne flowing as we ate and rested. The service was prompt, efficient and delivered with a smile. Mains - rack of lamb for my wife, with truffle fries and a garden salad, I opted for the fillet of beef with agrodolce, seasonal veg and chips. All of it was really so tasty, perfectly cooked lamb and beef melt in mouth pink beef with such flavours from that sauce. Truffle chips were amazing too. I suppose if you watch the cost the lamb dish is more expensive as you need the sides to go with it. Would still like a bit more of the veg from the garden. Puddings again was quite a hard choice to make and we did ask for 'a bit of chocolate' to go with them - my choice was panacotta and my wife grilled peaches. Whilst we waited we could have more of the champagne and also passed our compliments back to the chef for the mains. The sweets maybe took a bit longer to come out but they provided an extra plate with some of the chocolate moelleux and a celebration piping in chocolate sauce. Just wow!! We loved all of it - yet more clean plates!! Finally had a great coffee and reflected on a great meal and experience. We really mustn't leave it so long and possibly invite some other family to enjoy it too!!

Barnsley House is exceptional in every way. All the staff are very friendly and not formal, the accommodation & spa were beautiful. Enjoying cocktails on the terrace overlooking the wonderful gardens was a lovely experience. Dinner was excellent especially the service and also a great breakfast. The location is right in the heart of the Cotswolds with great walks in the area and plenty of interesting places to visit.

Stunning country house. So beautifully clean and well kept. The grounds are beautiful. I felt like I was on set at the Antiques Road Show. Tucked away is a beautifully modern spa. I was only visiting friends staying there but was so impressed. A great place to escape the hustle and bustle.

This is quite definitely one of the best hotels I've ever visited. We were in a courtyard suite, utterly beautiful, and ate in the restaurant, as well as having cocktails on the beautiful terrace. The spa, where you have 2 hours free with your room charge, is exquisite, the decor throughout is tasteful, traditional, very comfortable, and easy on the eye. The food in the restaurant was excellent, with polite, efficient and yet charmingly informal service making for a very relaxing experience. The gardens are wonderful with many many quiet corners to hide away in. Look out in particular for the small 'temple'by the pond. A huge thank you to all of the staff who made our stay so very special, especially for our dining room service with the lady from Romania and gentleman from Poland - you worked super hard and yet always had time to stop for a friendly chat. And also to the wonderful Marco on reception. This place is simply awesome and has to be experienced to be believed.

Back in January I booked a room at the Village Pub to celebrate my partner’s birthday in May. However, it was not until the evening before we were due to go that I received an email (not even the courtesy of a phone call) advising me that the pub was closed that day. Our room was still available though, and dinner and breakfast would be served at the main house. We weren’t looking for a fine dining experience – we had previously eaten in the village pub where we had a great food and service, and we wanted a pub with good beer and good food. However, with such short notice we didn’t have time to start looking for an alternative so decided we would still use our reservation. We later learned that the pub has been closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for several weeks up until that point, presumably due to staff shortages, so we could have been advised much sooner about this. Despite the lack of timely communication, our room was very good, and we walked up to the main house that evening for a nice dinner. In the bar we were looked after incredibly well by the barman who made excellent cocktails for us and was welcoming and chatty. We asked if we could bring forward our reservation from 8pm to 7:30pm and were told this was not a problem by one of the serving staff. We were given menus and were delighted to see lobster on the menu which the barman kindly offered to ask the chef to reserve one for us. We placed our food order just before 7pm and re-confirmed 7:30 for our table to the same server. The barman persuaded us to share another cocktail as we had half an hour to spare. Five minutes later our server asked if we would like to go through to dinner which was all a bit strange. We explained that our table was for 7:30 and that we had just ordered another cocktail. Two minutes later she told us that our food had been plated up and was on the table. Since one of our starters was hot, we felt we had no choice but to go to the table, with cocktails in hand … not an ideal accompaniment for our food! At no point were we asked if we would like wine with our food even though we had been given the wine menu. The starters were excellent but the service appalling. Instead of asking if we would like wine with our meal we were asked if we would like another cocktail … really? On clearing the table after we had finished our starters the waiter managed to knock my knife off the plate which he didn’t even bother to pick up. At this point we asked the waiter to make sure we were not rushed and that we would like time to relax before the main course, it being 7:15pm. He then brought our wine promptly to the table and at the same time our main course arrived. By now it was 7:20 pm, we were about to be given our main courses and our table had been booked for 7:30 pm so everything seemed to be a massive rush, quite overwhelming in fact. This was turning into a disastrous evening and not the relaxed time we had been looking forward to. At this point we decided to abandon the restaurant and complained to the management that the rushed service was deplorable. They could learn a lot about service by visiting any of The Pig Hotels (a similar price point) where not only is the food exceptionally good but the service, from every single member of staff, is exemplary. Barnsley House needs to invest in recruiting and training staff who can deliver service to a similar standard and get management, servers, and kitchen staff with more ‘joined up’ thinking. In the end we were just desperately disappointed as our previous visit to the Village Pub a while back had been such a great experience.

Lovely country hotel, visited for afternoon tea, so disappointing we have visited before and I thought it was the best by far so I rebooked for my daughters birthday. The sandwiches were dry, the scones solid and inedible, we complained and had more brought out which were still not edible. Éclair was soggy nothing was acceptable. So we consoled ourselves with a cocktail .... delicious

I have to be honest but I made this booking because I wanted to go back and see Rosemary Vereys garden and potager again. She was a remarkable gardener and her decorative vegetable garden was a huge source of inspiration. Now that this is a very smart hotel the garden is only open to guests of the hotel and restaurant. Good news - the garden and potager, whilst a little untidier than before still has the structure, charm and beauty of a great garden. The glass of pink champagne we sipped sitting on the terrace of this quintessential Cotswold manor house surrounded by a beautiful garden was one of those rare perfect moments that you know you will never forget. The dinner that followed didn't disappoint either. My pea veloute with fresh crab was gorgeous and my friends said their goats cheese ravioli was the best ravioli they had ever eaten. Mains of Belly pork and Stream trout were beautifully balanced but for me the Apple Tart Tatin was the star of the show and I wanted to lick the plate. The staff were open, cheerful and couldn't be more helpful. It isn't cheap but my goodness it was worth every penny. The only trouble is that I now feel the need to go back and stay the night.

Took my mother in law to lunch for her 89th birthday today. She had been looking forward to it for months. It was extremely disappointing. Initially we had booked the Barnsley Inn but had a call to say they didn’t do lunch on Mondays so transferred us to the hotel. There was no mention the hotel also didn’t do lunch! There was an option of sandwiches or cream teas. Having overcome that disappointment we settled on the afternoon tea but unbelievably the sandwiches were stale despite returning them and so say getting a fresh plate. I would not visit again despite the beautiful surroundings.

Absolutely inept service. We had looked forward to a romantic getaway in the countryside and were expecting great service and accommodations after reading so many positive reviews. However from the minute we arrived, we were let down by inconsistent (and at times, straight up rude) service. To elaborate: no one greeted us or showed us the property when we arrived, we waited 20 minutes before anyone came to take our lunch order while we waited for our room to be ready, there was no turn down service at night, the maid walked into our room without knocking 2x, and the electricity completely shut off 2x due to the another room tripping the switch for the entire building (the fuse box was in our room for some reason). The room itself was very comfortable but it became apparent it needed maintenance - the inside door handle to the bathroom completely came off, and my husband nearly got locked inside. The manager did apologise for the maid and the electricity issues and applied a bar credit which we appreciated. We were going to let it go and try to enjoy the rest of our stay. Unfortunately, on the day we checked out, at 11:30am we requested a taxi for 12:15 to bring us to the train station. We confirmed this several times to two receptionists. We had a quick lunch, requested our bags, and waited as 12:15 came and went. At 12:20 we asked if the cab was on its way and we were eventually told at 12:30 that the receptionist was “told the cab was needed at 1:15,” essentially trying to blame us for miscommunicating. We were then told that she was going to sort it out but at 12:40, the only thing she appeared to be doing was eating her lunch. She showed absolutely no urgency and we ended up missing our original train and having to wait at the train station in the cold for 1 hour for the next train (the waiting area was closed as it was Sunday and nothing is around the station). At the same time, we noticed that people arriving were not even greeted by the staff and kept waiting for ages to check in, like we had been. One couple had to unload an entire trunk of suitcases themselves as the staff looked on passively. The receptionist literally told them, “Yes, please,” when the guy asked if he should unload his bags himself. Apparently, we were told the reason the service has really gone down hill is because the property has changed ownership in the past few months. It’s incredibly disappointing to have to write this review as some members of the staff (the waitresses in the main dining room and the bartender) were very kind and helpful. I would never write a negative review unless absolutely warranted. I understand COVID has been very hard on the hospitality industry and the property has a lot of potential. It’s just very disappointing when you spend upwards of £600 per night to have this many things go wrong and the staff to respond with indifference. A lot of these issues seem to stem from poor training and understaffing.

Beautiful setting. I went for the spa, set slightly apart from the main building, you take a short meandering path through beautiful spring flowers. The spa is as you would hope, tranquil, extremely relaxing and for someone like myself on a very tight budget, pure decadence and escapism from the 'real world'. Theresa gave me my two treatments, back and neck massage followed by a session of reflexology she is excellent, very knowledgeable of her career, not just about the massage but the body itself. I've been for several massages at various places, none have given a decent hard massage when requested. Theresa on the other hand gets deep into the muscles, pushing out the knotty tension. The foot treatment too, was a revelation and deeply relaxing. I digress, I didn't go inside the house itself but spoke to an overnight patron who was extremely pleased with the entire experience of her stay. Thoroughly recommend.

Shocked by how they treat their staff ! and to see how the housekeeping staff use dirty towels and bath mats to clean the rooms no colour coded cloths no nothing we were absolutely disgusted to witness this as well as the same cups in our room were also cleaned with the dirty towels !! Talk about cross contamination especially in these covid times none of them wore gloves either when you think a room here is up to £1100 a nigh or so , certainly wont be returning , didnt complain at the time as was a guest of our friends who were paying for us but its been on our minds since ! Response to response: You shouldn’t be surprised go see for yourself this must be happening on a daily basis ! It’s disgusting what I witnessed, its not my opinion its what I witnessed happening and your guests deserve better, most places have a colour code to follow and all I saw the staff using was my old dirty towels !! And one small guy swearing the whole time, my drinking glasses were cleaned out using dirty old flannels, even the toilet cleaned using towels I mean come on this is outrageous!!!

We had dinner at the Potager restaurant. The food was great, as always. Unfortunately the service fell flat on this occasion, and we were left slightly disappointed with the experience. Service was generally slow and clumsy. We were served another table’s starters. A member of staff’s mobile phone ringing loudly on multiple occasions during service, and having to ask for our table to be cleared when dishes were left after our main courses. When you are paying a discretionary £30 service charge, I would expect a much higher standard of dining. Having dined here many times before, this is the first time we’ve had a lukewarm experience, and I hope it was simply an off day. Barnsley House is a beautiful hotel, in quaint grounds, and the restaurant has a wonderful ambience. The food was excellent (I would recommend the rack of lamb, and the fillet of beef), and desserts were also great.

The overall hotel is very good and this is in lovely location. The spa is a really nice place to spend a few hours. The food is very good and the service is excellent. But the room we stayed in did not measure up to the high standards of a hotel in this bracket. Ours need cleaning and the wall needed painting. Some of the decor is getting a bit tired (Roman blinds, rugs and carpet). As this is a really expensive accommodation I would expect the room to be excellent and not just good.

We have been coming to the Potager Restaurant since the early 2000’s when it first opened. It has had highs and lows through the years. Today’s lunch was the lowest of the lows. The food was reminiscent of the early 1990’s in the Cotswolds before the foodie boom hit and standards became stratospheric. The food in the Cotswolds today is seriously good..almost everywhere. The timing was off, our drinks took ages and the staff seemed hell bent on getting the food order in. The celeriac starter was unusual, the texture unpleasant and slippery. My husband ordered a Hereford sirloin which came as a Sunday roast with gravy and petrified lukewarm roasted potatoes. My sea bass was over salted and overcooked, lying limply on a collapsed bed of tasteless chard. The cauliflower cheese tasted peculiar and arrived congealed and worse for wear having spent the morning under a heat lamp. For pudding, I asked about which cheeses were available. I was told there was a western cheddar, a blue, a Brie, a goat’s…I asked the provenance of the cheeses to which the waitress replied she had no idea as this was her second shift. Another waitress was able to further enlighten me on the cheese selection although the Cerney Ash she promised came as an ashless log, all served refrigerator cold with a lacklustre selection of Carrs water biscuits and tasteless chutney. I can remember home baked biscuits here once upon a time. What a shame standards have declined..at the end of the meal we were presented with a lacklustre plate of meringue kisses, khaki coloured jellies and dodgy looking white chocolate truffles on a plate scrawled with Happy Anniversary..it was our 40th today. What a shame we chose to celebrate at Barnsley House.
