Excellent set menu. Sophisticated staff. Lovely first class setting. Superb cuisine. There was literally nothing to fault and it compares well with excellent London restaurants. Locally sourced produce, meats and cheeses. What a registrant should be like.

Booked for lunch during the cheese fest and we were not disappointed. On a very wet day the friendly welcome and warm fire were the perfect start. A pre-lunch drink helped build up the appetite needed for our meal, and oh was it delicious! I eat a lot of cheese & onion pies as it's my go-to favourite, but this one lifted the bar, and then some. My smoked Wensleydale & caramelised onion pie was a cheese (and a pie) lovers dream. Add perfectly cooked chunky chips and deliciously decadent buttered greens, still beautifully crisp.....it's a wonder I could face dessert, but I forced myself after a respectful pause, and that was delightful too. Staying true to the cheese in cheesecake, and not over sweet but with a lovely sweet/salty caramel sauce to set it off. Not to forget the perfect 'buttery biscuit base'. This was our first visit, and I can't wait for a reason to return. High standards of service, and cuisine. Thank you!

Well when we called to book Sunday lunch we were told they could fit us in … what they failed to tell us was that they don’t actually serve Sunday lunch at a lunchtime on a Sunday. After the disappointment of realising we were not going to get a lovely roast we looked at the menu. Not particularly a lot of choice, so you would expect everything to be done well … and be available. Not here, the disappointment continued, my Mum wanted the salmon, they didn’t have any, my husband wanted the pork, also not available. They offered Mum Stonebass (out of the freezer), my husband and I both ended up having a burger, which were pitiful so we both left it. Poor all round and expensive to boot. We were offered a drink on the house which didn’t really cut it. We should have known it was going to be awful when my husband I ordered garlic prawns as a starters and we had to wait so long for them to prepare them (again, out of the freezer) we were offered a basket of stale bread to tie us over 😂 We left and drove to Hawes to see what time the chippy closed …please don’t waste your time or your money here.

This Edwardian country house classic is a must for anyone who enjoys the non-corporate feel of a family-owned hotel - the food, decor, real fires and smiling staff bring a general ‘warmth’ to the experience. Some of the guests for dinner (Valentine’s) had been back so often they seemed like personal friends of the staff, which is always a vote of confidence.

Very busy but shown straight to our table. Menus were of the fixed price type so either two or three courses including Tea/coffee. We opted for the Goats cheese and a parma Ham for starters. Followed by Duck and Hake as mains with vegetables. Not a lover of duck but decided to give it a go, now I know why I am not that fussy about it. The Hake was a little bit powdery to taste but plenty of it. We opted for the cheese board as an addition and we could have as many or as little of the six choices as we wanted. Plenty of tasty cheeses. Coffe for both and petit fours. Staff very attentive to allergies one of has and ensured all was well. Very friendly and well organised. car park can be very full so go early!

We enjoyed a very civilised evening meal with a drink beside the log fire, ample time to choose from the reasonably priced wine list and sumptious suroundings with history and toy car displays! The original owner's ciollection of horse shoes from the various race courses added a nice touch. We had coffee next to the fire afterwards and played Solitaire followed by snooker! The dining area is very spacious and service was excellent. The food was very good but not excellent, roast potatoes needed a steak knife to cut. Portion size was generous and our only other negative observation is that as far as we could see, without having to ask, is that you have to choose two courses when we really felt more like a single main course, with wine and followed by coffee. Staff were very helpful as we could overhear from dedicated vegetarians who ariived near the end of service. The Maître d'hôtel was especially welcoming.

Stayed here a couple of times thirty years ago, so when caravanning in the area called in for lunch, for old times sake. Hadn’t booked but that wasn’t a problem, offered us the sandwich/ light lunch menu as they had a big party in. Sat in the lounge/ bar area as we had our dog with us. We had ham and mustard sandwiches with salad and French fries, lovely bread, home cooked ham, salad dressing etc - a great sandwich and chips made with good quality ingredients. What stood out was the friendliness of every colleague, everyone who passed us took the time to say hello- that must have been 6 people. Impressive.

My husband and I very spontaneously chose this restaurant at the end of a long day of touring the Yorkshire Dales. We literally were driving by, it looked lovely, and so we stopped to inquire to see if non-hotel guests had access to the dining room. "Yes!" We had a nice conversation with other guests while waiting, and were told how wonderful this hotel is, to stay in. And dog-friendly as well. After our Gin and Tonics, we were treated to a truly delightful dinner. It was difficult to chose from the proposed starters---they all sounded very enticing. I chose a pear, poached in red port wine, accompanied by feta cheese and other small morsels of this and that. My husband had pigeon breast, which he raved about. We both ordered the sea bass as our main course. Again, a perfect choice! And excellent coffee after our meal. A true five star experience.

Just another day of Dales weather: wind, rain, floods, hail, snow, sunshine and a beautiful rainbow! The atmosphere was calm, extremely affable, nothing too much trouble. Wood panels and leather chairs/sofas with a roaring fire in the sitting room. Dining/restaurant area is more contemporary, glass and chrome. Lovely views across the valley to Hawes and the fells beyond. Didn't stay overnight but feel confident that it would be delightful. Will definitely come again, for longer!

We enjoyed an evening meal with friends at this cosy Wensleydale hotel. It is always pleasant to be shown to the lounge and enjoy drinks while looking at the menu. The menu here changes daily, according to what is available, but there are plenty of choices. It is structured so that you can choose 2 or 5 courses followed by coffee. On this occasion we all preferred just two courses. I had a delicious haddock, cod and prawn fishcake. My companions liked their pheasant with a dijon cream sauce very much. My husband chose hake with wilted spinach that was excellent. The home made cheesecake with fresh fruit was outstanding. Coffee was offered at the table or in the lounge. Friendly, prompt service but we were not rushed, and the portion sizes were perfect, not too large. We will certainly return, and look forward to trying the full 5 courses.

This is a beautiful place staffed by kind professional people. Be aware that its concept means a long wait for dinner. You are received in a lounge area and get your menu. Then the hostess visits everyone in the order in which they arrived to discuss and note down the choices. Each party’s orders are delivered to the kitchen successively while everyone waits (and has a drink). The hostess returns and invites the first party in (who must have arrived in the lounge half an hour or so prior to the start of dinner at 6:30). Then she takes another party’s orders, etc. We were in that lounge a full 45 minutes. The advantage is that, once at your table (a fixed one for each room, which you return to for breakfast), service is fast. For those who have hiked on the Pennine Way all day and hungry, it’s certainly a change of pace :-) The meal was quite good.

We have just spent a week in Yorkshire Dales. We did not stay at this hotel but dined here one evening. The menu is not extensive but we enjoyed our meal it is fair to say portions are not huge but were fine for us. Food was of a good standard if a little on the expensive side but we appreciate the location and the surrounding scenery were outstanding which made the cost of our meal worthwhile. We would like to mention the staff at this hotel particularly Chris who looked after us with pre dinner drinks and wine choice. He was friendly attentive without being overbearing always very professional. The resturant staff also gave the same great level of service making you feel very relaxed all in all a lovely evening. Because the weather was so nice we stopped again before returning back to our rented cottage to enjoy a drink sat outside on the patio enjoying the fantastic views. Would definately return here if we are ever again in the Dales.

Great sitting room with open fire to warm up by on a snowy March night. Very friendly staff. Food a little disappointing in that a tiny portion of pigeon breast was followed by some rather uninspiring cod. My friend's duck, however, was pronounced excellent. The dining room, in contrast to the sitting room, seemed rather cold and uninviting. Wines by the glass. The charming housekeeper gave us a lantern to guide our path through the blizzard on the walk back to Hawes.

We stayed 3 nights here and had a suite with windows on 3 sides, which allowed us to see cows and sheep grazing, we were on the second floor closer to the parking lot and in a very quiet area with what felt like an apartment. Our suite had 2 couches and was very comfortable with a refrigerator (milk and water provided) along with coffee, tea and hot chocolate. The staff were very helpful and friendly offering guidance and suggestions whenever asked. We had breakfast as it was part of our rate and it was good in terms of the Yorkshire Full Breakfast and the Home made Muesli, We did share with the hosts that having more local fruits and jams would be appreciated. The dinner menu changes nightly which is a nice feature, we only dined once as we wanted to have a change of pace. The formality of sitting at the same table every morning and evening, felt a little restrictive. We also found that the guests may be more mature and it is more of a Hotel, so not a B&B. Yet we would recommend as the room we had was excellent, good view great walk into town and friendly staff.

The food is always lovely, the choice is smallish but we've always found dishes which appeal, and my only problem is greed. I really ought to only take one piece of cheese for my fourth course but the range is so good (and largely local from Wensleydale and Swaledale) that I end up with 3 or 4 bits... We took the 5 course meal dinner package as part of our hotel stay package. 5 courses was far too much for us but still managed 4 of the 5 courses each night (not because the portions were small but just because the food was excellent). Even then it was very good value in my mind - excellently cooked food and as the menu changes every night, great if you are staying for a few nights. Breakfast was excellent as well. If you are staying here would be 'silly' not to take advantage of the wonderful food. We enjoyed two dinners at the restaurant and rate it as excellent. The quality of the food and wine was solid across the board. Only issue I had was that they were out of Lamb already at 7:00pm and in an area absolutely covered-up with sheep and after having watched 32,000 sheep bought and sold the same day I would never have thought it would not be available. Evening set menu was lacking in finesse and presentation. Garlic Mushroom starter very creamy but lacked any contrasting flavours or even garlic! The home baked bread was 3 slices of ordinary white. The main of ham-a bacon chop, was cooked just right and had a well flavoured if thin gravy. But everything else was fried and doused in oil including the mange tout, fried potato and pan fried veg. The bacon and cabbage side was again fried and v oily The creamed mashed potato offered a small oasis from its oleagineous surroundings. The menu offered scallops, sea bass and vegetarian lasagne but they were presented without creativity or attention to detail. The food needs to have some fresh input and to show someone cares. The potential is huge. The cheerful, attentive and informal staff, combined with such a beautiful classic country house setting, could with the chef upping his game, become a much better restaurant and a food destination.

Excellent food and excellent service allowed us to sit for a while in these quiet and peaceful surroundings before we carried on our journey. We will return very soon as the Stone House Hotel has just become our number one place for eating in Wensleydale.

We live locally and have enjoyed many lunch stops here, as we are able to take our dog and eat in the beautiful wood panelled lounge. The sandwiches with hand cut chips are fantastic value, and we can certainly recommend the Smoked Haddock Rarebit which has to be one of the best light lunches you could have, along with a portion of hand cut chips of course! Having not been for an evening meal for over a year, as we don't always want 5 courses, and maybe would use this restaurant a lot more if we could just have 2 or 3, we decided as it was my birthday we would skip lunch so we could enjoy all of the lovely courses. All of the staff are very friendly and welcoming, the food is always excellent, and it is generally just a very pleasant way to spend an enjoyable relaxing evening with friends or family. We will certainly be back, and can highly recommend this restaurant.

Our annual treat - dinner at the Stone House when we go to stay in a cottage in Hawes in February, our tenth anniversary this year. It's a really lovely welcoming place with open fires and a very chilled atmosphere. The food is excellent, its not cheap but what you get is value for money. Finally the staff are the most friendly, genuine and welcoming people you could wish for, nothing is too much trouble for them and they will go out of their way to help and look after you. All in all a fabulous place, already looking forward to next year!

Stayed at the Stone House over the last few days. We could not have been made more welcome; staff were extremely attentive and affable; food was excellent (breakfast and dinner); and fellow guests, many of whom had been using the hotel for 10 years+ were very very friendly, We will be back!

Quality in abundence here, Oldy Worldy with old panneld rooms to lounge around in. We called to see about having a wedding here but it was booked up ( should of known better ) Wether you have lunch or a evening meal, i dare say that you will not be disapointed. Stunning setting in the Dales. Expensive to stay and eat, but you get what you pay for here, and always will.

I came here for dinner. 34 pound set menu. It was okay, but not as bold as I could be. Breaded fish wasn't cooked through enough and generally everything was lacking in lustre, even the crackers fo the cheese and biscuits were stale, which just about summed up the whole experience. for another 4 quid I could have had a set menu at the angel inn at hetton!

Great choice for a family meal as part of a Dales mini-break. Superb welcome from Paul, fabulous food prepared by pam - all in a wonderfully designed restaurant. If you are staying in or near Hawes, this is a definitely a restaurant to experience...

Missed out on first visit as closed, so made a detour to try the fruit cake and cheese. It was delicious along with very good scones, cream and jam. Generous pots of tea too. Great after a walk in the Dales

I ordered some of the traybakes by post last week so that we could have them on Father's Day. We had family visiting too. The cakes were lovely and very much enjoyed by all of us. Very good service. We did also visit this teashop on 2 occasions when we were staying in the area in April. Had lovely meals and service was excellent too. Will definitely visit again if in the area.

I had a wonderful spa experience at Forest Spa and a decent stay at the lodge yesterday. I really wish I could give the estate a 5 star rating, but there were a handful of things that just didn’t quite meet the mark. For starters, it was very confusing how to get to the spa - signage definitely needs to be increased. Once in the spa, the lockers are located in the waiting/dining room which was odd in my opinion (I’ve been to a ton of spas and never seen this before). The staff were extremely friendly and my massage/scrub/facial session was amazing, which is why I wish I could give them 5 stars. For those that come for a spa day, you preselect your lunch choices at check in. It was clear the snacks were a separate charge, but the form made it appear as though the dessert was part of the package. At checkout, I was surprised that I was being charged 9 quid for a small scoop (seemed like half a scoop honestly) of sorbet with a little bit of granola. Pretty absurd. As for the lodge itself, check in was extremely confusing as it was hard to find the reception desk in the dark (since it gets dark around 4pm now) and then once checked in, they give you a map and leave you to find your room on the massive property (not just one central building). After lugging my bags to the reception desk (most of the way was gravel so had to carry my suitcase), I had to lug my bags back to where I started and ended up going in circles trying to find my room in the dark since there was little signage or help available. I ended up having to go back to reception and confirm where I needed to go and eventually found my way. This definitely put a damper on my spa day and completely reversed the relaxation I experienced earlier. Once in my room, the shower looked like an accessible room type shower (even though it was definitely not an accessible room since on the second floor with no elevator) with no door or barrier dividing the shower floor from the rest of the floor and I knew that was going to be interesting - I was in fact right once taking a shower. The bathroom floor was soaking wet after my shower, but thankfully it was only me staying in the room so I was able to use the extra towels provided for a second guest to mop up the water. The room was spacious and cute and the bed comfy, however, the pillows had a weird smell to them that almost made me think they weren’t clean. Dinner at the Coach House was nice, however, I paid 50 quid for a drink, water (that I didn’t ask for) and a main dish - seemed excessive, but I guess that’s what you get when staying at a place like this. Overall, the staff and service I received at the spa, lodge and restaurant were all fantastic. Just really wish the estate was able to meet the mark on all other areas.
