The stocks is back on the up, great to see! “Jockey” the manager , engages with us locals - I’ve been coming to the stocks regularly for years, it’s a brilliant pub, great beer, foods fantastic.. locals are friendly, not noisy like the below review! This is nothing less than a great local country pub, with good staff and customers!

The new manager appears to be running a betting game with some noisy male customers rather than serving food. When we asked for menus he insisted he finish his game first. Money was changing hands. Food was good, waitress service fine, management was a disgrace. Stocks has a great reputation for good food and conviviality it does not need indifferent management and loud, foul-mouthed men. I'll leave the reader to ponder on the ethics and legality of a pub manager leading a gambling ring....

Previously its been great at "The Stocks', but on our visit both the service and food was shockingly bad. We waited over 45 minutes for our starter and 1 hour 30 minutes for the main. We had soup and the black pudding for our starters. They weren't worth the wait- small and badly presented. For the mains, we had roast beef and the cheese pie. The Cheese Pie was burnt inside and out. The roast beef was dry and hard. The Yorkshire pudding was burnt, almost black, and the roasted potatoes were so well done and hard they could have been used to break windows. We had to ask twice to place our order, and no one asked us if we'd like any more drinks all the way through our meal. It's clear there is no one leading the service and for the price charged its nowhere near the standard expected. The service speed and quality of food is far superior at any Weatherspoons pub. My advice is to go elsewhere until it is sorted out.

Sorry to say The Stocks disappointed this time, previously been a dependable choice, the latest reviews suggest the same views so we are not alone! In summary really non-engaging service, all diners were pointed to tables not shown, we waited 15 minutes to be offered a drink and then the order was wrong, left 15 minutes with starter plates after we had finished, main which was 3 x roasts was then another 30 minutes and the restaurant wasn’t busy, main plates not cleared for 15 minutes after we had finished, had to ask for the bill and leave after being there for 2 hours for a starter and roast. Throughout there were plenty of staff but just no direction or standards being set, allowed to stand and chat and simply responded to the kitchen when food was ready. People might say it’s because the staff are all young but it’s just about direction and motivation and showing them some passion, if whoever’s managing it isn’t showing that then the team won’t either! There was no check if anything was ok during or after the meal, not even when we asked for the bill, just lacklustre but whoever owns this place it’s your issue not your teams, a good restaurant manager would have that place spot on!! Food also needs attention, strange to get no garnish with the starters, arancini were tasty but needed a bit of rocket or something to finish off the presentation. Pate poor, too much pate, brioche not toasted enough, has to ask for more butter, and again no garnish, just pate, brioche and relish on the plate. Taste wise the pate wasn’t great either. Roast beef was nice and rare but really poor cut, really grissly/fatty and hard to cut. Overall really disappointing from previous experience, reality is not a huge amount to do to get back there, just need the owner/manager to get out on the floor and manage the place and develop the team that are probably more than capable!

We went for a graduation celebration meal on Monday 8 July. We had pre booked a table as there was 13 people attending . We had chosen the deal of 2 course for £16 and had selected our choices already and sent the details to the pub. On arrival we were seated for 6.30 as that was the time we had booked for . The pub interior is lovely, very nicely decorated. Unfortunately the service leaves a lot to be desired . We only got served our starters at 7.30 after asking twice. I was told that they were busy serving walk in customers. We then only got our mains an hour later. The food was very nice but the service was shocking and this has put me off going again . It spoiled what was a lovely graduation day

The reason for the average really has to do with the slow service, perhaps they didn't expect the number of diners! The food is above your average pub grub. The large piece of brioche plonked on top of the pate was a surprise, just slice it and place on the plate! The lamb koftas were a highlight.

I thought the meals were expensive with small portions. We had fish and chips. The fish was small compared to what you get in most pubs these days. My friend wanted garden peas instead of mushy and was charged £2 extra for the smallest portion of peas I have ever seen .. served in a tiny ramekin. I have never known any pub charge extra to serve garden peas instead of mushy peas. Later I was charged £1 for a portion of cream on my dessert. It made you feel like you were being taken for a ride. The manager was very unhelpful. We would not go there again.

Went for evening meal and not a good experience overall. Menu didnt blow us away and the food was average with small starter portions. Was very busy so atmosphere was great but the service was awful. Waited long periods for drinks orders, took ages for food (understand it was busy) and plates weren't cleared for about 30 minutes after we had finished. We had even requested the bill before the plates were taken, and took another 15 minutes to pay. A shame as I had previously rated it 5 overall.

Had a meal for four adults and three young children today. Food was ok, but the service was terrible. Had to wait ages for them to take the order, and it eventually took about 75 minutes for the food to come. A ridiculous wait with under -fives. The menu was interesting, so we decided to try this pub for dinner. On the whole the food was cooked well enough, but seasoning and flavouring let it down. The chicken thigh starter, for example, was crispy and juicy inside. However, the coating was pretty flavourless, as was the accompanying dip, yet the onion bhaji served with it was insanely salty. Several of the dishes we had suffered from the issue of lack of flavour, which was a real shame as the meat and fish were cooked well. A recurring theme with dishes that included a deep fried element was that they were overly greasy. Either they hadn't been drained well or were fried at the wrong temperature. The desserts were generally a waste of time. The cheese cake had a grainy texture, but the fruit on top was excellent. The apple tart was so thin you were left wondering what you'd paid 7 pounds for. Stock control wasn't great on drinks. I was originally offered a pint which had run out the night before, and then when trying to order a bloody mary from the menu I first was told they had no lemon juice at all, then they had no tobasco. Overall, not terrible but at north of 160 pounds for 4 people I had expected better.

We are trying to be more healthy and do more walks in the local area. We live in Crosby but decided to head to Parbold for a countryside walk. We did a lovely walk along the canal tow path and into fairy Glen and decided we would have lunch on the way back. I had asked my son to google where was nice to eat in Parbold and he suggested the Stocks Tavern. When we arrived we noticed other people who had been walking the route were sitting at outside tables as it was a lovely day. We decided to eat inside and as soon as we arrived a very nice lady came over and sorted a table for us and was very welcoming. The pub was very pleasant inside and clean and fresh. We ordered a starter and main each. I had the gin cured chargrilled salmon starter and I can honestly say I have eaten in many of the fine dining restaurants in the area and around the world and I have never had such a refreshing and beautiful salmon starter. The chef obviously is very talented and knows what he is doing. The little parcels pf G and T granita and also the fresh crumble in your mouth croutons were worthy of a Michelin starred restaurant in my opinion and the salmon itself was of outstanding quality. The other meals were of a very high standard and the service was also excellent. I would definitely visit again and it was a very good experience all round. It was very busy on a Monday lunchtime and we arrived quite late into the lunchtime service which I suppose says it all really. Highly recommend.

3 of us dined here, 2 had the chicken and mushroom pie, which cost £15 each and our friend had the cheese and onion pie at £13. They came with chips and gravy but if you want vegetables with your meal they are extra and cost a lot extra. Myself and one of my friends both had the hispi cabbage with truffle and each portion of the cabbage was £5 which is a ridiculous price. Error we made was we didn't pay enough attention to the prices. The food was very tasty but way way overpriced whereas the drinks weren't as paid £18 for a bottle if the house white. Never had truffle before and can't see what all the fuss is about to be honest, would I go back, that would be a no unfortunately as trying to charge fine dining prices in an establishment that does not fit the bill. Hardly any parking and no disabled bays at all so from the start does come across as very unwelcoming.

My first visit to Stocks for a very, very long time as I live 45 minutes away. It has changed a lot, some may not like the changes, but for a 2023 restaurant/pub, I thought it was great. Six of us had a mid afternoon Sunday Lunch, the Roast Sirloin of Beef was fantastic, cooked very slightly pink, a very generous portion with a good selection of vedge, roast potatoes and Yorkshire Pudding. We only had one sweet and a number of excellent coffees. Now the not so positive points. The service got slower and slower, the restaurant was so noisy...not that you can control this, but was awkward to hold a conversation. We were never asked if we would like sauces with the meal and nobody checked if everything was Ok. Would we return, yes, the food was excellent.

My family took me here for Mothers Day on Sunday. We arrived on time to be told to wait in the bar as our table wasn’t ready. After 20 mins of waiting I asked the manager if our table was ready, to be told, not yet. After another 10 minutes I asked a waitress and was told, not quite. The manager then came into the bar and asked us what we wanted to eat, I asked again if our table was ready, to be told yet again, not yet. We weren’t even offered a tea or a coffee the whole time we waited, we were just ignored. After 35 minutes we were shown to our table, no apology, no mention of our wait. Customer Service here leaves a lot to be desired, we ate our meal, paid the bill and left. Not how you expect to be treated any day, let alone on Mothers Day.

Food came out quickly but was very average in terms of quality. The ribeye steak I had was a bit tough and my wife’s chicken burger (and the 2 lots of popcorn chicken for the kids) was overdone and crunchy. Even with a 40% off mains voucher it was still nearly £50 for food and soft drinks. The place is beginning to look a little tired and run down. I don’t think we’ll be going back.

Unfortunately NO longer dog friendly!! Canalside pub with views across what was at one point Martin Mere, England's largest lake. Inside, was a good pint - don't know now as I couldn't get in due to the dog (or into the bar) 🙄. And, no, I wouldn't have expected to go into the restaurant with a dog.

Came across this place in our campervan. They allow overnight parking if you use the pub. They also allow well behaved dogs inside. It's obviously a work in progress at the moment (October 2024), but you see what they are aiming for with renovations to the adjoining building. Very friendly staff, and some good wines available. Some locals in the bar could do with moderating their language but otherwise a positive experience. Food was okay but not special. Very attentive staff. Nice location by the canal with picturesque walks. A great stop over between Southport or Liverpool areas on the way back to the M6. Parking is free if you use the pub otherwise it's quite expensive.
