Unfortunately NO longer dog friendly!! Canalside pub with views across what was at one point Martin Mere, England's largest lake. Inside, was a good pint - don't know now as I couldn't get in due to the dog (or into the bar) 🙄. And, no, I wouldn't have expected to go into the restaurant with a dog.

The food was fantastic, from the starters to the desert. Staff's attention and service were second to none. Best of all, we could moor the narrowboat right outside the door and walk across the carpark.

As a single person walking a dog I do understand that some pubs are not dog friendly. But to walk in and be told we are not dog friendly and not even given the option to get a pint and sit outside is not really the way to treat people when so many pubs are struggling to stay open.

The restaurant looks great and has a lovely atmosphere and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Our starter was delicious but unfortunately the main was a let down. The chips were warm and soggy and the lamb kebab meat was also the same.

It’s closed now as it’s too expensive and there’s cheaper options in the village. Hop vine a pint of premium lager £3.70 in the day time , farmers £5+ no wonder it’s closed. Regular customers stopped going after the refurbishment, they were relying on people driving out for the day who don’t mind paying top dollar as a treat , ring”o”bells is now the place to go for the expensive treat drive out meal ! Hopefully next Tennant understands the market

After a canal walk with my wife we called at the FA for lunch, we sat outside in the bright sunshine, after that it went downhill very quickly. My wife ordered an open prawn sandwich which arrived with a meagre portion of prawns on a slice of white bread (bloomer?) . Does one slice of white bread constitute a sandwich? Poor in the extreme. I ordered the fish finger sandwich with a bowl of chips, the chips were brown and undercooked and were sent back the replacement chips were slightly better but still hard/raw inside. The fish finger sandwich was liberally smeared with mushy peas and overwhelmed the fish which was well cooked. The whole experience was dire and the FA is expensive we should have returned the lunch and requested a refund. Dire food at an expensive price!

We had seen bad reviews, although we called in this evening on a narrowboat where you can moor outside. I had the fish and chips(fries) and the fish was excellent, my partner had the fish pie , which was served in a metal container, ie not ping food, and she said it was nice, so no complaints . Two mains, bottle of wine, plus small sparkling water, about fifty two quid.

Wednesday evening we arrived for food for my myms Birthday. Waitress was lovely. Placed our food order which contained gluten free options as both my mum and partner are gluten intolerant. The waitress came back to inform us the kitchen had ran out of gluten free flour to make the batter for the fish and chips. Both my partner and mum had to rr pick off the menu. One ordered the gluten free bacon and cheese burger the other a steak. Waitress again returns to inform us they had no gluten free buns for the burger. Back to the menu. New order placed. Waitress then has to come back again to tell me they had no bums for my plant based burger. I said that's fine ill just have a different bun as it's just a bun to which she said I don't think they have the actual burger. No its like OK ill change my whole choice. So chicken liver pate to start then halloumi burger for me. Mum's starter arrives followed by mine. I went to cut some of my bread to put some pate on o ly to find all my bread had mould on it!!! Calls the Waitress back who was full of apology. At this point we should have walked out!!! They bring me another and my partners starter arrives. Rather luke warm for the mushrooms. Mains arrive partners steak that was supposed to be rare was cooked medium rare, mums cod loin was bland and to say mu burger was ridiculous doesn't cut it. A 2 inch thick block of halloumi deep fried and shoved between a half stale bun that's been toasted to disguise it on a pointless piece of avocado and a bit of dry salsa. Had to cut the halloumi down as was inedible. After that my partner is now suffering with his stomach which is only after eating here and started with the mushrooms. Still awaiting a reply from the email sent. So I called past today as after inspection of the bill they still charged me for the plant based burger that was out of stock. And to say they charge £4.05 for a pint of coke is extortionate. The lady who I spoke to today has said the general manager will reply to my email, refunded me for my meal but still tried to justify the service saying they get fresh produce daily etc etc in all fairness wasn't good enough. We where told by one Waitress the head chef had walked out not sure on when but whoever is in that kitchen shouldn't be. As the only other table that was in at the time we overheard the Waitress tell them their pie was being remade as the first one had exploded in the kitchen. This place is definitely being reported to food hygiene agency!!!

Called in on a wet and windy day after a walk along the canal. Unfortunately, they were struggling as part of the roof had collapsed due to heavy rain. The lady who served us was lovely and asked us to sit in the restaurant as the bar area was closed due to the leak. We chose off the lunch menu, which now includes jacket potatoes. Sadly, the food was extremely disappointing. My husband had prawn and Marie Rose bloomer. Plenty of prawns, granted, but served on a limp piece of sliced white bread (and not, I suspect, even Warburtons!), no garnish. £9.95 I chose a tuna mayo “crisp jacket potato with dressed leaves and a pot of slaw” Cue one small jacket potato, no salad, no slaw, cold and most definitely not crisp. £8.95. Suffice to say, we won’t be eating here again.

Where should I start - appalling from start to finish ! 7 of us went out for food - booked for 5pm. My daughter has a severe dairy allergy which they were made aware of from the start. We asked for an allergy menu and were told there wasn't one. We asked what she could eat and were told pick something and we will check with the chef. We were then told that of the very limited menu, they'd run out of three items. My daughter asked if they could check if the roast beef dinner contained any form of dairy at all including butter and was informed not. We waited the best part of an hour for our food and when it came it was delivered to the wrong table. It eventually arrived and was disgusting. The lasagne was inedible, the lamb was so tough it couldn't be cut and my daughter had a huge dollop of carrott and suede full of butter. When we complained to the manager we were told we could have something else but it would be a further 20 minute wait. Half the table had started eating. I was constantly referred to as love ! Not only was the food and service terrible but the place is dangerous. By law, they need to know and understand food intolerance and allergies and the serious implications. THIS IS ONE TO AVOID . I would appreciate Chris or Jon Nevin to reply in full to this review before I report The Pub to The Food Standards Agency as I notice The Golden Lion also has issues with intolerances / allergies. This blatant disregard for the law is unacceptable.

Popped in for a drink as expected the place to be fully booked. It wasn’t and so we thought we would try the food. Staff were friendly and showed us to a table which was fine although made it difficult for themselves as people could have been sat in the same general area of the restaurant rather than all over. Was shown a pile of Menus which seemed to have a lot of items on and typed in various fonts. This just seemed chaotic. There was a simple Sunday menu and we were informed of the various items they had sold out of. Order the chicken roast. Food was good quality, decent chicken, oven made roast potatoes but the veg was seriously lacking. Half a carrot half a parsnip and a twig of tenderstem broccoli. We walked along the canal to the Ship and noticed for £1 more the portions were much more substantial and included veg and the place was packed. Overall nice quality food but a tad disappointed with the portion size for the price.

I had booked a table for a special occasion, my boyfriends birthday 2 weeks ago. When we arrived we had to wait 5 minutes for a table even though I had pre booked the table weeks in advance, we then had to wait 45 minutes before getting drinks and the high chair I had asked for, staff did not come over to take take our drink order I had to get up myself and go to the bar as we had been forgotten about. When I got the bar the bartender said “1 sec” then proceeded to serve 2 customers that arrived after me, I was shocked, it was completely rude. I was then told they would bring the drinks to the table- we waited another 5 minutes. Finally we ordered our food when the drinks arrived. We had to wait a while between each course as we ordered starters, mains and desserts. The restaurant wasn’t busy there were 5 tables when we arrived, one table was a big group but they had already had there starters and mains by the time we arrived and so had the other tables, so we wasn’t sure why there was a waiting time? We had ordered a children’s meal, with that the children’s pizza. When the pizza arrived it was served as ciabatta bread, which isn’t suitable for a 2 year old, our daughter didn’t touch the pizza she only ended up eating peas and chips for tea. In the end we hadn’t received any food until over one hour of arriving. Besides that our food was ok. Throughout the night we didn’t receive one check back on our food, otherwise we would have let the staff know about the pizza, we didn’t get any sort of recognition if I am completely honest. We waited that long for our deserts that my daughter was that fed she didn’t eat it when it had arrived. At this point there was 3 tables in the restaurant. I am really unhappy with the service provided considering I had booked it for a special occasion. By the end of the night and after all the waiting we were fed up and just wanted to go home, we couldn’t enjoy our meal liked we would have hoped and expected. Some of the staff were apologetic throughout the night but it still doesn’t change the fact we were not checked on throughout the entire night. For this reason I will not recommend or return to this restaurant. I have also raised this issue over email but it has been ignored.

Sunday 2 course lunch for 6. 3 drivers who wanted soft drinks - one coke, one Ginger beer, one Appletize. No Ginger beer and no appletize available. Main course no cheese & onion pie available. So 6 orders placed for dinner. 2 Pork belly ordered - delivered 2 roast pork dinners instead. By the time the replacement Pork Belly dinners came, 2 of us had finished our dinners. There is a notable difference in the portion sizes of different meals. The roasts and Pork belly were small - more like a child’s portion, whereas fish & chips were of a correct size - good plate fillers. The food was all edible, tasty and nicely cooked but the service and availability were both inconsistent. The desserts were a disaster really. One out of 6 not available, and no chocolate ice cream either. We ordered sticky toffee pudding which is served with vanilla ice cream. Ten minutes later another apology - we have no vanilla ice cream available. Would you like Strawberry ice cream with it instead? I should point out that custard is not an available option for any of their desserts so my question is how would you not have the staple vanilla ice cream available in abundance? It’s a frozen item that lasts for months! I have to say overall it was very disappointing- we had looked forward to eating at this Pub for weeks. Whoever is ordering supplies needs to spend longer and do a more thorough job, because it seems that this is a key area that failed for the weekend trade. Ice cream should never be an out of stock item at any pub. Especially when you don’t have other alternatives available. When you’re spending £180 you’d like to think you’re getting good value for money and good service. Sadly it was not the case today

We booked into this pub for a family gathering on New Year's Day; we'd eaten there a couple of times previously. We specifically asked when booking whether the full main menu would be available and were assured it would be. Upon turning up for the booking, the pub was almost empty and we were greeted by a man who gave the impression he didn't want to be bothered with us. We were told there was only a very limited menu available ("we've been busy" was his only explanation - well yeah, it's been Xmas...). The choices were really poor and even then, one option only had two portions remaining. So at 4.30pm on New Year's Day, we're left scrambling round trying to find an alternative within reasonable distance to accommodate all of us (which wasn't easy!). I get that NYD can be tricky and unexpected events happen - but they took our phone number when booking; the least they could have done is ring early that afternoon to advise that it would be a severely limited menu on offer and give us the choice to cancel, and time to sort something else. Terrible customer service and no surprise that we'll be swerving this place from now on.

Will not be returning to this rip off place again, ordered ribeye steak but it definitely wasn't ribeye like stated on menu more like flat iron with the shape and no veins of fat running threw.

Had a life saving lunch here on a Sunday bike ride. Being Sunday, I couldn't order a sandwich of any sort, only a meal. The place was very busy and unfortunately they lost my order. When it finally arrived the food was only very average, so i wont be returning.

Live local, and never had a bad meal or pint at this place. Went on Friday night and had the best calamari and then best belly pork I can remember. Service is always spot on and prices are reasonable. One of the best eatery’s in the area!

Food is good, portion size is a little small for a country pub, especially the deserts. What really let's the place down is the service, especially the manager, there were multiple problems with our food which the manager addressed with contempt. We went the first weekend it reopened and put the poor service down to being new, shame to see it's gone further south, disappointing really the place could be amazing.

Lovely place, unfortunately the food really let it down, there were around 10 people eating in our party and the majority of us were disappointed with the food, a couple of us sent food back as it was dried up or cooked too long. Portions weren’t great for the price they charge, over £6 for a chocolate sundae which was basically 3 scoops of ice cream with a bit of chocolate sauce in a gin glass…won’t be returning and wouldn’t recommend

A lovely place with a good atmosphere. However the food we was far from what I think is acceptable. The starter and dessert were fine. But the mains we had appeared to have been kept in an o en for too long. Tough roast potatoes and, dried up meat! Very disappointed.

Food was laughable, out the freezer, into the microwave and onto the plate. Not much chefs can do in places like this where low costs are more important than happy tummies. Girls working there and manager were sweet. Thanks to them for dealing with our issues as they did. Beautiful setting, kitchen just needs a revamp.

Recently taken over. Servers all young. And they have obviously all been told to call the paying customers, "GUY/ GUYS". IT drove us all mad by the end. How would the same customers like it if they said, " GAL/GALS? SERIOUSLY...

Chicken bacon stuffing ciabatta was just a stuffing ciabatta that tasted of ...... stuffing no salad with it. Very bland, and it's a shame that the excellent location isn't backed up by the food.

Chose Sunday lunch menu - good variety for all 3 courses and competively priced. Delicious good, well presented and on hot plates (a must for me). Will definitely visit again

Food was inconsistent- fish and chips good but desert was a fudge cake out of a box, cold dry and bland. Service from most was nice apart from the manager who acted like he was doing you a favour by taking your order. This isn’t the first time he’s been that way either. Lovely setting but won’t be back unfortunately

Came across this place in our campervan. They allow overnight parking if you use the pub. They also allow well behaved dogs inside. It's obviously a work in progress at the moment (October 2024), but you see what they are aiming for with renovations to the adjoining building. Very friendly staff, and some good wines available. Some locals in the bar could do with moderating their language but otherwise a positive experience. Food was okay but not special. Very attentive staff. Nice location by the canal with picturesque walks. A great stop over between Southport or Liverpool areas on the way back to the M6. Parking is free if you use the pub otherwise it's quite expensive.

Gorgeous food. Popped in as we were in the area but would definitely do so again.

Food came out quickly but was very average in terms of quality. The ribeye steak I had was a bit tough and my wife’s chicken burger (and the 2 lots of popcorn chicken for the kids) was overdone and crunchy. Even with a 40% off mains voucher it was still nearly £50 for food and soft drinks. The place is beginning to look a little tired and run down. I don’t think we’ll be going back.

Called into here on Saturday night with friends. Lovely pub, sat down and got nice and comfy. Started drinking only to be told we had to move because someone wanted to eat there and they had booked. Fine, but maybe think about putting a reserved sign on the table. Also, I am no prude, but the girl servers skirts are none existence. It bothered me (and I am fine, it may not bother them) but sitting there you can see some blokes eyes popping out when ever they went passed or bent over.
