Stockbridge Tap in Edinburgh, City of

It's pub, with a major problem... Firstly, lets do the positives: it has an interesting and varied beers / ales selection at reasonable prices for Stockbridge and it lets dogs in .... That's the end of the positives... Unfortunately the negatives: it's also got some Andrew-Tate-Energy bar staff, all bristling 'roid rage and self hatred, which they happily offload onto whoever they can. I've heard some of these guys regularly be rude, aggressively condescending, and even shout at people - including an elderly customer who was, basically, just confused about an unusual beer name... a simple mistake for which he was verbally battered with some Tate-style Big-D energy... So, if you like Mr Tait and his punch-bag based philosophy, perhaps you'll love it and become a regular. If you and your friends prefer your night out without toxic nonsense from bar bullies, there are better options just 5 minutes walk away.

I was born in Edinburgh in the 1960s. I moved back here last month after worshipping at the altar of money down south in evil England for nearly four decades. But - hey - before things get too political, let me tell you what I love about this place. First, it's spacious. There's loads of tables, but they are nicely arranged so that you get plenty of room. Second, the beer is amazing. A dozen real ales, all as fresh as a daisy? Lovely. Take that, Tom Kitchin. Third, the staff are great. You get a choice between the tall scary guy who presents 'Taskmaster' (he knows his stuff, mind), and lovely Becky, whose smile lights up the room and who I would marry in a heartbeat if I was not already spoken for. Why aren't you there already, elbows on the bar? If you hurry, you might catch last orders.

Very poor customer service, had the audacity to demand we buy more beers just because we moved one chair in an otherwise empty pub. Much better pubs to head into in Edinburgh. Gentlemen in the rainbow shirt had an inferiority complex.

Always great beers and great company

Arrived at 10.36 for a drink with 5 friends up from England. First and last drink of the evening we thought. Despite hours saying 11 they said they were closing although their were many locals still there. I said thought they closed at 11 and they said no they were closing. Went to nearby Kay’s Bar, a much friendlier welcome who honour their advertised hours.

There are many types of beer, and you can try something different every time. It's great to have a drink while standing alone and then go home! !

A lovely, friendly pub for cask ales.

Excellent fantastic warm cozy welcoming roomy pub with a great selection of hand-pumped cask ales. The, rightly, take great pride in their knowledge, selection, handling and serving of these UK specialties. Glassware is correct and the cellar temperature is perfect. Highly recommend along with their two sister pubs: The Cloisters and Bow Bar; both in Edinburgh.

Unassuming from the outside, but a really cozy pub. Not busy and has decent numbers of tables. The entire bar is filled with beer pumps so you've always got loads of choice

Unaccomodating bar staff to the point of rudeness

If you love dogs and pubs that don't take bookings and refuse stag/hen dos, then this is the place for you. Multiple craft beers/ales available on tap, at least 1 dog in the pub whenever I visit, and board games available to play. On top of that, it is surprisingly fair priced considering that it is Stockbridge. There are no stairs in this pub, and there are multiple entrance/exit areas, but as I have yet to check for an accessible toilet, I'm not 100% on wheelchair accessibility.

A great place for a pint in the afternoon. The smell of hops on the air, an enthusiastic drinker, and a sample of beer helped me choose a very enjoyable pint.

Traditional Od Pub, modern local beers but a loud boisterous bartender made me want to leave as a soon as possible, uncomfortably loud with his buddies.

Wide selection of beers. Great for a refreshing stop on the Waters of Leith walk.

Na een fijne avond eten nog even een afzakker halen in The Stockbridge Tap. Gezellige buurt pub als huiskamer voor buurtbewoners. Alle problemen van de wereld worden hier over een pint bier opgelost. Simpel!

The Stockbridge Tap is a pleasant, traditionally decorated pub with old style bar mirrors. Good selection of cask conditioned beers and good range of spirits. Is very much dog friendly - there were at least 4 when I was there with one having its own reservation! 😅 Service is good but something of note is that large groups are not allowed.

Great bar for looking out into the street. Bigger than expected as there is Plenty of seating round the corner towards the rest rooms. Great selection of real ales and drinks

It depends on the time of day you make a visit especially which staff are on shift. The ales and whiskeys on offer are eclectic , very chilled place generally but at times found certain staff snooty and unwelcoming but not always so. Sometimes get the impression we wee customers are a anonymous to a few

Quiet pub. Great staff. Helpful and attentive.

An excellent shop. Adie the Manager and his assistant looked after us well. Had 2 pints of Pudding Porter and Tamdhu. My dog Bella liked Rocky also a black cocker spaniel. Both were nice and quiet. Another good session last night with Raspberry and Blacberry Porter and an ace James Eadie Highland Malt. Ask to see the list!

Great atmosphere and range of drinks

Friendly, welcoming pub with an excellent choice of drinks. Proper pub where you can chat to new people or just sit with a book and relax. All members of staff are extremely knowledgeable about the products they sell and we were made to feel very relaxed and comfortable.

Decent corner bar with good selection of real ales. Staff more interested in talking among themselves than helping customers. Continuing private conversations while supposedly serving. Clearly not local guys. No attempt at using the basic forms of ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ when accepting payment. Plenty of better places in Stockbridge to head to.

Got here by chance, while on a walk to discover the surroundings. Lovely selection of beers and good looking pub. Definitely one to remember.

Low key has the best beer selection on tap of almost any bar in Edinburgh. There are some serious contenders, like Salt Horse, but Stockbridge tap has the atmosphere of a traditional pub with the local craft beer of more modern beer bars. I didn't appreciate it enough when I first moved to Edinburgh, but now it's one of my favorites.

Does beer very well. A great and ever changing list of ales to keep every palate pleased.

Amazing pub in Stockbridge with friendly staff, loads of local and great craft beers you won’t find anything mass produced in here which I think is great.

This seemed to be a popular local spot with all ages of people stopping in for a drink. They have tons of Scottish beers, mixed drinks, and wine. Inside is very cozy and exactly what you are looking for in a pub. They have an area with tables and chairs and another area with couches.

Very relaxed and friendly pub with very knowledgeable staff on the different varieties of cask and keg beers. The Island Hopper was the best beer I have had in years!

I’ve tried all the locals over the past 4 years, but Stockbridge Tap is head and shoulders above the rest. I have enjoyed their rotating cask ales (and they offer tasters which is greatly appreciated) in a warm and convivial and safe environment. In fact, during the Pandemic, it’s been the safest place for locals and visitors to drink as staff make sure everyone is checked in and out on the nhs scotland app and also stay masked when moving around. After a few other pubs got sloppy, I totally appreciated staying safe and seeing how staff worked so hard to keep the tables free/clean and booked for customers. A great beer with great and knowledgeable staff in a great location, what more could you ask for?

Would love to be able to say whether the beer was good or not but unfortunately, a rather sullen woman informed us that there were no tables…despite the pub having about 5 people in it. Clearly this is not a bar affected by covid as they don’t seem to want customers. Won’t ever bother trying again.

Great selection of interesting beers and chilled out atmosphere here on a Sunday evening. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. Sitting inside felt very safe, with table service, mask-wearing and socially-distanced seating, but was still a lovely slice of normality.

We often go here for the beer. They have a fantastic selection and they are always all in tip top condition when you are served. You can sample first and if there is a problem they will change it. Very friendly staff . Yes I note different views stated here but that gives a false impression. The service is great. I particularly like the COVID safe policy and that’s one of the reasons I go. It does mean you can’t just turn up with a crowd to a small pub like this but in this day and age you can’t expect to do that. Do your homework or go elsewhere

Been going for years. Friendly helpful staff and delicious beer. They pay particular attention to cleanliness and make you feel safe and relaxed at all times.

The service here was a utterly appalling I would heavily commend NOT to go here Service appalling and staff. Very unwelcoming on all levels. Even more so when addressing the problem with management.

While the majority of pubs have punters walk in this pub wants you book.And when you do book no matter the hundreds of pounds you put in the till they will throw you out if you try and extend your stay even if pub has several hours before closing. Happy to smile and take your money, customer service and hospitality is nil. Avoid, plenty better pubs in city centre/Grassmarket rather than making your way out here. Wolf in sheep's clothing.

Had a couple of tasty local ales in this friendly pub early Saturday evening (tables reserved for later). Friendly staff, good COVID precautions, nice ambience.

Great pub, even better beer selection. Booked a table for an after work thing, but more people arrived than anticipated, there were two free tables around us but got told to pay after person no 8 arrived (we booked a table for 5 and there were two empty tables of which one we used). Fair enough as we arrived with more people than announced, but a word of caution, don't meet with more than 5 or you will be told to leave in a very direct manner.

This is the first review I’ve ever done. We’ve been going to the Tap for years but noticed the staff seem to feel its their own living room and they’re going you a favour by even letting you through the door. Yes, they’re hyper strict on COVID, but it’s the mean attitude that’s hard to understand. All the snarky comments about other customers and the aggressive tone. It’s like they don’t even want people there. Amazing beer choice but it’s a hostile place, shame.

Excellent pub. Amazing selection of beers and spirits and very knowledgeable and friendly staff *Met at door, covid safe check in. * only one person allowed in toilet at once for obvious reasons, not being a mind reader I couldn't see through the wooden door, entered toilet where the manager ( who had been telling his staff he was nursing a hangover earlier) shouted "one person at a time get out" before I could even respond he shouted "out now" A bit of common manners are usually required in the hospitality industry or maybe if you work in the pub cut down on you're booze consumption.

I’m new to Stockbridge, so new I hadn’t been out before my friend arrived on his Motorcycle tour of the UK. He was here for 1 night and so went for a pub crawl. I booked the table for 1830 and called ahead that we were going to be late, which was accepted without any issue. We arrived at 1930 and were met by this whiney, slimey little worm of a manager. He said we were an hour late and never called ahead. I pulled out my phone and showed him his number as being dialled. At this point he looked at the young lady that took my call like she was a POS. He told us to get out, I looked around to see there were 2 customers, no music, no atmosphere and left. We found the best pub and now my local right next door. We stayed all night and spent £££. Much needed £££ after such a long lockdown of public houses one would assume. All in all we ended up very lucky to find my new local, had the misfortune of meeting this ‘manager’….I’ll use the term very loosely. Don’t bother going there, it’s got no soul, no atmos, certainly no personal skills nor hygiene . Do yourself a favour and avoid it at all costs, you’ll be better off for it.

Unpretentious pub with excellent ales. You get 5he feeling everyone here is having a good time - with a mix of locals and visitors.

I visited this pub yesterday with 4 other senior citizens. The lounge was empty ( approc 5.30pm) and we sat on a settee and pulled a chair over instead of the two stools as some of us have health issues which mean stools are very uncomfortable.We were hastily and bluntly told that this was not acceptable as the pub would become busy. We replied that we would return the chair should the pub become busy ( and we only intended to have one drink).The reply was curt, the room was arranged that way for a purpose! At no time did the barman appear to be friendly , welcoming , concerned about the quality of the customer experience and willing to compromise. To top it all he was heard complaining to people in the bar that some customers ( us) were moving the furniture! Needless to see we left immediately! This is not the way to provide a service to the public!!!

Stockbridge Tap is just perfect - the location, the mood, the beers, and even the food. No wonder it can be found in the "best pubs" lists of all kinds.The drinks - they selection keeps changing all the time, there's always several interesting guest ales available, to the amount of having to regulate the frequency of the visits. Excellent single malt selection to spice things up.The people & the mood - totally relaxed. A superb mix of local eccentrics and visiting beer afficionados, and the staff knows their trade.The food - I probably should not be surprised, but that's great, too. Fish, vegetarian & vegan options available; the tacos are excellent.it you are after robust authenticity when it comes to pubs, then the Tap is not your place. The place did have a facelift recently (early 2019), the toilets lost their authentic charm (and aroma) and it got a fresh coat of paint, so the it is rather "gastro" - it's not a problem, however, since they didn't lose their expertise in all things malt.

I was standing next to the bartender and the woman who wrote the negative review below (mez1987) when this “incident” occurred. This had nothing to do with being a tourist, as my husband and I are American and were treated well. Many places in Edinburgh have this rule, she should look it up.We had a great experience here, great selection of beers and friendly staff.

Get the feel for the local people at this entertaining pub with good food and a really laid back atmosphere

Really enjoyed having dinner and trying some interesting craft beers. The venison burger was really good as were the fish and chips. Only complaint about the food was the portion size - too much!

On our way home to our hotel, The Reaburn, we had a stop here. Few tourists and a good atmosphere. Stockbridge is a very nice area.

You can get off of the bus and within 100 meters be in the pub in the heart of Stockbridge on Raeburn Place. Nice local hangout with a good assortment of beers and liquor.

Good beer and food after a walk. The pub is is in town centre at the end of the lovely walk up the Water of Leith.

Had an absolutely awful experience! We were staying in the local area as I was up in Edinburgh for my hen do. It was just a small group of us (3) and one evening we were looking for a bite to eat and a drink or two. As soon as we entered we were made to feel really unwelcome with one of the bar staff saying we had to take our sashes off, house rules. She then proceeded to go behind the bar and whisper about us to her colleagues, I could understand if it was a massive rowdy group of us but it wasn't! I made my mind up there and then and decided we were leaving and I would highly recommend trying one of the other places nearby either The Raeburn or The Good Brothers wine bar where we went and received excellent customer service and food. The staff at Stocksbridge Tap might want to visit these places and they might learn a lesson or two in what good customer service is...would not recommend this place at all!

Small but bright and airy bar in Stockbridge with an excellent range of beers and very friendly staff.

Really pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food produced on Friday. Already a long term fan of the Tap for good and varied beers and great trad pub atmosphere..no music. The venison burger and chips and fish and chips were superb. The chips were outstanding with an unusual salt and pepper 'dressing".

Me detuve allí para tomar una copa con mi amigo, después de una pinta me sentí hambriento y sorprendentemente el menú no es solo pescado y papas fritas y hamburguesas, tienen opciones veganas e incluso tacos, me encantó, probé los tacos de rape que eran muy sabrosos , la comida no la hice para la foto, te la comí rápido! Had a great time at Stockbridge tap. Had a great selection of craft beers, and struck up lively conversation w some regulars. Overall a refined but unpretentious vibe; definitely felt at home here. We were sorry to miss the food on a Sun evening, but will have to come back!

I was in the area for business and visited a couple of times for a pint. The staff were friendly and knowledge. There was a great selection of beers and the food looked good (though I didn't eat there).

Rude staff. Seem to choose their opening and closing hours depending on whatever the staff feel and they don't communicate this to the customer until its too late to get last orders in. Tables are filthy too and selection of ale isn't great either.

There's no shortage of hipster venues in the Stockbridge area so thumbs up to the Stockbridge Tap, a proper pub with a mixed clientele - hipsters to be sure, but dog walkers, pals meeting up, people popping in for one on the way home.

Pubs like these are in short supply these days: the ones that sell good cask beer with pride. You'll struggle to find a better range of British beers anywhere nearby. Island Hopping bitter is a my favourite, a floral ale with not too strong an alcohol level. Stockbridge Tap will even allow you to taste before buying.

Great pub in the heart of Stockbridge with a great range of craft beer and great bar food also ( when the kitchen is open), so be sure to check if you want food. Otherwise, enjoy the beer and great atmosphere.

Great place for a drink and lunch. Fresh food from the kitchen, nice range of craft beer and comfy seats. The fried fish bites and sweet potatos chips were ace.

Went here for a nice quiet drink. Ale was good and tasted crisp. Environment was pleasant and seating comfortable.

We arrived a bit late already, due to a delayed flight, around 9.30 pm and the kitchen that day closed at 9 but the staff were really nice with us and let us order still and also advised us some of their great selection of beers. We had a burger with fries which was really great. Couldn't recommend this pub enough, if you go there you won't regret it, really great experience.

Era una noche muy ocupada y estábamos parados frente al bar, nuestro grupo estaba bloqueando accidentalmente el paso de un camarero, estaba frustrado y murmuró 'F * en extranjeros'. Di ritorno dall'orto botanico, senza dover tornare in centro ci siamo fermati in questo posto. Davvero accogliente, il personale gentilissimo e soprattutto il cibo era fresco ed ottimo. Ci siamo fatti consigliare dal barista, persona molto gentile ed alla mano, e la sua fiducia è stata ripagata! Personalmente ci ritornerei, ne vale la pena!
