I've never had to write quite a review like this so here goes... We had lunch here last Sunday. It was busy in the restaurant but it seemed to be well staffed. We had an initial confusion at the beginning as we asked whether the edamame beans from our set-meal could be brought out first, but also switched for grilled instead of boiled. All ok - and we agreed the surcharge this would incur (we were told £1 for substitutes, but to be honest it was muttered to us and I'm not sure we heard this right). Service was hit and miss. Firstly, a second set of Edamame beans turned up at the table when we already had the first lot, so we sent these back, having only ordered one. Sometimes when we wanted an extra drink or the bill we couldn't attract attention at all. Other times, like when my wife was finishing the end of her meal with food still on the last plate, a member of staff started clearing before she had finished then waited by the table to take her personal plate as soon as she put her chopsticks down - which was unpleasant and uncomfortable. As such, we decided the service charge of 12.5% was not appropriate and asked, when the bill came, to remove it so we could choose our own value. (As it hadn't been that awful, we would have paid something). The waitress disappeared off with the bill, and to my surprise, when she came back, she had re-evaluated it and added extra charges for the Edamame beans mentioned earlier. I queried this and she said it was the surcharge she mentioned earlier (she had just "forgotten" before. I don't think it is acceptable that, just because a customer declines to pay an optional 12.5% service charge, that you would vindictively re-evaluate their bill to add extra charges. Either the charges should be there or they should not. It should not matter if you pay service charge or not. Furthermore, after leaving the restaurant (while this was happening we were strapping a toddler back into a buggy) we noticed that in fact, they had charged for the Edamame beans, incorrectly, further up the bill. So she was also wrong to re-evaluate the bill. She was also wrong in the way she had charged it in the first place. We have therefore been overcharged. It's minor in terms of costs, but the nature of the way this was done has left a sour taste at the end of the meal. I have since contacted the restaurant via email to explain the situation and via the feedback form they had sent me and have had no response to either, so zero marks for customer service post - meal either. What is sad, is that the service at S+S Oxford used to be spot on, and always deserving of 12.5% service charge, but I do think it has lost its way since it first opened.

Positive things first - one of the few places you can get sushi as well as food for non-fish lovers (the sticks). The various seared and raw fish are delicious and the dressings tasty. Cocktails are tasty (albeit not very strong most of them - this month's special in a coupe glass is perfect). Ambience is great and location convenient. Servers are friendly and generally helpful although I'll come onto that. Slight negatives - I've been here several times and last time there was a slight hiccup with the scallops because they were raw. First server I asked said they were meant to be like this but as a sushi lover and someone who has had the scallop stick before I still wasn't convinced and they got taken off our bill by maitre'd. I came for another meal last Friday and they'd forgotten our ticket so we had some starters then a 30 minute long wait until we asked the wait staff where the rest of our meal was. I felt like they were trying to rush us through this part of the meal as me and fiance were finishing the last few bites and servers pounced on our table and started removing dishes. Annoying because I wanted an extra squeeze of lemon with my miso cod but the lemon was whisked away in front of my eyes before I could say anything! Honestly if I lived in London I'd go elsewhere for sushi but there isn't a huge amount of other choice in Oxford.

Everything we ordered was so fresh and delicious. Especially loved the Soft shell crab rolls, beef tataki and padron pepper skewers.

All the staff on were very kind and friendly! Food was great and the sauces were amazing. Would definitely go back! Thank you again for making a great birthday meal - the free pud was great too! perfect for her.

Food was fine. The 'atmosphere ' was spoiled by the THUMP THUMP THUMP of the loud music. Why restaurants think loud, throbbing music enhances the ambience, beats the sxxt out of me. Audio-pollution. We asked the waitress if they could turn it down, particularly as we had an autistic boy with us, and they did so after asking twice, and then only a tad.

Authentic sushi and cocktails. Probably the best in Oxford. Make sure you book especially for Fridays and Saturdays. Approximately 70-80 for 2 people

We were great by the hostess, Harriet, with a beautiful smile and warm welcome. We were offered space at the bar since all table were full and had great friendly service and Ryse provided great suggestions for food. Living in London, I frequently dine at this chain of restaurants. I was so pleased to discover one when in Westgate today. From the moment I arrived the staff were so welcoming and it was a really relaxed dining experience. The food as always was fresh and authentic and I enjoyed an array of dishes, The staff here are really something special, looking forward to returning when next in Oxford ❤️

This is a venue we'd always fancied trying, but as Sushi novices we weren't sure it'd be a good place for vegetarians / vegans to dine at. Thankfully as soon as we were welcomed into Sticks 'n' Sushi by the excellent staff, we were put at ease and guided through ordering from the truly splendid menu (which, quite honestly, you would love to take home and just stare at, it's a work of art!) With the aid of the staff, we opted to get one of the larger platters for three of our fish / meat-eating family members, and then a vegetarian option between two of us. One thing to be clear on when you're ordering water for the table is that you will be charged if you don't state you want tap water, so definitely keep that in mind (not a problem if you're ordering other drinks but we always like water with our meals). Food arrives in stages, starting with the starter plates and sharing dishes, then the sushi / sashimi and then the hot sticks. I think just about everyone in the family had a favourite thing, and my daughter (whose birthday it was) really loved trying all the different items, very quickly establishing that the fried chicken and shrimp were utterly amazing. For the two vegetarians in our party, the choices were also excellent and really tasty (the vegetarian hot sticks made with sweet potato and tofu were incredible). By the time the third round of food arrived we were already stuffed but took our time and also ordered sweets (again, these are a real wow in terms of presentation and taste) and the restaurant also serves excellent coffee. Though it's definitely not a mid-range or budget place to eat, we felt like it was an amazing occasion and working out at around roughly £40 a head, it wasn't actually super-ridiculously expensive for the five of us and we definitely felt it was a great venue for a special birthday. I guess the only gripe - and it's a tiny tiny one - is that it gets very busy so sometimes it's difficult to catch staff's eye when you need your table clearing or need the bill, but as I said at the top of the review the staff are welcoming and friendly and extremely helpful and really good at explaining what everything is as it's brought out and you start to tuck in. You are in for a treat if you eat here both for your eyes and your tum!

Excellent evening out at Sticks'n'Sushi. The food is superb. There is a huge selecion, and each dish we ordered was as visually impressive as it was tasty. It's great for the 'gram but even better as a real-life gathering. The setting is fine, but definitely allows the food to be the highlight. Service was just above OK. Dinks were a bit slow to be really honest, but not a problem overall. I think the cocktail making impacts the whole drinks service. Anyway, it's easy to recommend and will definitely go again when the right special occasion comes along.

Horrible experience with their take away service. I ordered a salad after a long day at work. I got a salad with hair inside the box. Poor hygiene and not acceptable for an £18 item. What followed was however, a lot more frustrating. I got in touch with Deliveroo to complain, they reffered me to the restourant, I contacted them, photo evidence included. I was just fobbed of with a one liner, not even an apology. I got in touch again, next time they referred me to a Deliveroo again saying they should refund me. Deliveroo then referred me back to them, saying they need to fix it. Both sides wasting my time and playing games. Am I as a customer supposed to negotiate and arrange things between them? This is unacceptable behaviour and incredibly poor service. Please find photo with the hair attached. I will not be visiting or ordering food from Sticks and Sushi again. After 20 more messages back and forth Deliveroo refunded part of the order. However, the whole experience has been both time consuming and frustrating. Once you give them money they will treat you like a nuisance, even when it's clearly their mistake.

We went there to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The food was delicious, very high quality, either the sushi and the cooked dishes. Good choice of drinks. The service was great too and the waiter explained each dish when bringing the food to us. We also got a little surprise before leaving, they sent out a mini dessert with a birthday candle, which we thought was a little lovely thing for them to do. It showed care fir the customers. We’ll definitely go back!

My daughter booked a table for 12 friends tonight for her 18th birthday celebration. The table was booked for 8.15pm when they arrived they were told they were really busy and had to wait an hour. Very disappointing keep this in mind if booking for a large group on a Saturday night. They had to go somewhere else as restricted to train times. They were all very disappointed.

The food is skillfully prepared, blending sushi with Western sauces creatively. Each dish is beautifully decorated with vibrant colors. Highly recommended!

Adventurous fusion of sushi with excellent alternative offers. The wagu beef sticks are highly recommended, even minding the price. Try with side offer of egg yolk and rice. Excellent cocktails and desserts choice at Michelin level taste-wise ( save for shabetto, which is nice and perhaps more than intense than other, but still a sorbet ...) while still reasonably priced. All presented very nice. I visited several times, including organising parties, never been disappointed... Perhaps only when they inevitably run out of Hiramasa Kama....

This a destination night out for anyone who loves Asian food. The concepts of the menu, cocktails and execution is top level. Only disadvantage was the wine list which was a bit pricey for the types of wine offered.

Went with my boyfriend for an anniversary, and it’s some of the best sushi we’ve had in a while. The rolls were tightly rolled with just the perfect amount of rice, the salmon was the most fresh I have ever eaten, and every single thing was delicious - but highly recommend the ebi bites, soft shell crab house rolls and New York Subway rolls. Service was incredible, and very accommodating as my boyfriend is Muslim, so they put notes on our order that some items were to be halal, and the kitchen removed some sauces that weren’t halal and all the dishes were incredible. They also gave us a free mango sorbet with a candle (no singing luckily as we both would have been embarrassed) as they knew it was a special occasion. We will definitely be coming back as we were very very happy with everything overall.

They add on 15% service charge without telling you, considering we finished our starter in 5 minutes and had to wait 25 minutes for the mains it was cheeky

A fancy Japanese restaurant on the terrace area of westgate shopping mall in Oxford city centre. I’ve been to stick n sushi in many other branches. I know their food is great. The food at Oxford branch is not worse. However, I was disappointed with the service during my visit. Firstly, the waiter frowned at us when we requested to change a table because the music at the speakers directly above our head were too loud. Btw, the speakers were way too loud and playing clubbing music. That’s not the atmosphere you wanted to have for a high-end Japanese restaurant. Then when they came to take order. We were ready for food first before we decided the drink. I said, “can I have another min to look at the drink menu?” The waiter said, “of course.” Then he took away the drink menu and I had to wait another 10min just to get back the drink menu. This is unbelievable. During the entire meal, the waiters rarely came to check in the table. When we wanted to add more food or take away unfinished dishes, we had to wait for a long time. This is not the experience I had with other branches - the waiters always come to check in whether we need anything or it’s so easy to get attention. The food is still good at Oxford branch. But with this service, I don’t think I’ll come back to this branch.

Quite a good quality of Sushi, Sashimi, Rolls and Shirashi Bowls, the portions could be more generous though, for the price .

The platter we ordered was alright. Half of it normal flavour small quantity, the another half nice flavours small quantity. That as well as tiny desserts made the dinner not too abundant with the funny prices they have we ended paying 150 pounds (2 people) for a fairly normal restaurant with some nice things. Just to say this is not even close to a restaurant that gets a michellin star nor is in an amazing location. Overall average expensive experience that ended up rushing us to leave because we were for more than an hour but they still served the dessert. Money yes but time to eat not much 🤔

The food was amazing (my favourite is the pork skewer with the miso dressing!) the people were so lovely, and they definitely made it a special occasion. I'll be back for sure, even though I live three hours away!

This place has amazing authentic Shushi. Tastes real good. They also serve famous Japanese beef called 'Wagyu'. The Wangyu is little costly but trust me it is worth trying. The kids menu is also amazing, even adults can have it. It has a mix of everything. Highly recommend this place if you are around and want to try some Japanese food.

Me and my partner came over not realising we’d leave with literally the best service we’ve ever received in our life. To start with the host and staff were so nice the young blonde host was so helpful and friendly when we we chose to sit on a different table she wiped it down so nicely and was lovely. The blonde waitress with the glasses was absolutely stunning she was so friendly even when asking for drink recommendations she told me the yuzu bomb was her favourite and her vibe was so sweet I instantly said yes and she was right I loved it. The man who also served us our food when I think the other waitress was on break , was so cute he checked up on us multiple times and explained what the contents were of every dish even checking up on us and bringing more water without us even asking. He was amazing they all were. Sadly I don’t live in Oxford so i will definitely be recommending to everyone I know who has the chance to come here a lot and make this a regular place. Also the food was delicious too and filled us up we had the Every Day platter for 2 (I’m not a sushi girl but I loved). This is such a long review because I’m genuinely I love them we had such a nice lunch.

My favorite restaurant is the Soho branch and this was my first visit to Oxford, equally impressive, I loved all the food especially the Beef Tataki and Hotate Ceviche. Love the ambience and low lighting and we cannot wait to return. Our server was Isla, she was friendly, attentive and super nice, a real asset to the restaurant.

Honestly, I was blown away by Sticks and Sushi! I had heard great things before I visited, and have since been twice to the Oxford location and once to a Location in London. To be honest, I do not enjoy the "sticks" part as the scallops tasted awful and I am more of a sushi person. I am not sure if the scallops were off, or if they always taste like that. Wow - not for me! However, the sushi!! The combinations of flavours is totally incredible. Every bite is 10 out of 10 for me. The broccoli, cauliflower, ebi bites, friend chicken and sashimi were incredible. I love the sushi and the other bites (not the sticks lol) and am planning another visit here soon. So divine. The creme brûlée is THE best I have had in the entire world! Totally unexpected, but totally divine. Highly recommend this place for a nice dinner or special occasion.

Dined here yesterday and was incredibly disappointed. Whenever dining out, we try to be very nice and make our servers life easier. However, our server was rude from the beginning and we were rushed out of the restaurant. Not sure if this was racially motivated, but it ruined our evening. When asking for a jug of water, she said that she isn’t going to give it to us. Closer to the end of our meal, I see her make eye contact with me and then hand a jug of water to the white couple a couple tables next to us. She then proceeds to point at our table and tell the waiter to give us the check (when we didn’t ask for it yet), which he brings over. Would not recommend coming here.

We have visited this restaurant a few times, most recently celebrating our anniversary. The food is gorgeous and the portions are extremely generous. The staff is welcoming and caring we always had a 5 star experience. Would highly recommend for dates, meet ups with friends and corporate events. The views from the restaurant are breathtaking

OMG absolutely incredible food! I’ve always heard about sticks’n’sushi & always just assumed it was just another typical franchise, but boy was I wrong. I got a matcha tea and it was the silkiest and most pleasant matcha I’ve had! Then the miso soup, so gentle and a great starter. I got the broccoli which blew my mind, it was coated in this spicy but delicious sauce and I had flavours I’ve never had before. The sushi was also the best I’ve had!! I got the mango ice cream for dessert and it was so lovely:) I highly recommend.

Good food, great service - expensive but worth it

Doesn't offer good value for money. The food is good, some dishes better than others. Avoid the Wagyu Bites which were incredibly bland and insanely over-priced considering. Atmosphere was ok, pretty quiet for a Friday evening. Overall not bad but very expensive (200 GBP for 2 people)

Amazing sushi! Absolutely loved the sushi here and have been back a couple of times because of that. Service is good and although pricey, it is worth every penny! Nice restaurant and outdoor dining. Definitely one to try if you love sushi!

I adore this place! Fantastic beef tataki and the food so fresh!

The restaurant is clean and never too loud. As for the food, it's pretty darn good sushi, always tastes fresh and well prepared, with plenty of options. A ‘go too’ option when dining with friends which has never been a disappointment to date.

Tried charging a lot for tap water, never had this in other Sticks n Sushi. The tap water tasted and smelt awful, we couldn't drink it. Food was ok. Service very slow, I thought they'd forgotten my salad because my partner had finished her sushi 25 minutes before my salad arrived, but when we asked, they said sorry it'll be another 5-7 minutes. Location, atmosphere and decor all excellent

Awful food. I've had better at Itsu and Yo sushi for a fraction of the price. Went for expensive £90+ menu. Tuna and salmon carpaccio just tasted like lime, nothing else. I've had plenty tasty carpaccio before and was thoroughly disappointed as was really looking forward to it. Sushi rolls were the same, couldn't taste the fish at all, might as well just had an avocado or sauce or battered roll. Cooked food was all overcooked, tough, chewy, tasteless . That included the seafood as well as the batter, the cheese balls and other meatballs and sausages. The only saving grace was the sashimi which was tasty and full of flavour.i wouldn't come here again, and definitely not for the price. Atmosphere and view was nice. Service was okay, manager kindly gave us refund for food not eaten

A delightful experience!!! From the moment we stepped through the doors until the last bite, our experience was nothing short of exceptional. Starting with representation on the menu - which is pure art, and ending with pleasant smell of incense and softest towels in the washrooms. All the staff members were very pleasant and welcoming especially Birgitta who took our orders and presented every meal to us, her presence made the whole experience many times better! Thank you Birgitta and all the team! What about the food - it is simply great, everything was delicious and very pleasing to the eyes! We will be back many many times for sure!

Good option to eat sushi. I went with my friends to say goodbye, but we had some problems. Good food but regular prices. This type of food is not cheap, but some dishes had quite high prices. The service is good, they serve you with towels to clean your hands, but it took them a while to deliver the food, and it was out of time. At the end of dinner, they charged us extra for staying past a certain hour (I don't remember what). This is something they do very often in England and it seems inappropriate to me that there is a time when they charge you more for sitting. Furthermore, when they brought us the bill, which we asked to be divided by each diner, we realized that there was an error in the receipts. It turns out that they charged us for an extra dish. When we raised the situation with the girl, we spent 20 minutes trying to make her understand the mistake made, although they did not take responsibility. I don't know if they saw our faces as students or foreigners, but they wanted to charge us more than they should. Finally the situation was resolved, but the experience remains and so does the memory. Despite this, it is a great, quiet place to go eat sushi.

Lovely food, great quality and very well presented. Service was fine, could have been more helpful with choices, as this was our first time here, but it was a Sunday lunch time so probably not their finest in...I can imagine a weekend evening is probably the best time to go if you want engagement.
