Shoryu Ramen in Oxford

Awful experience. The chef put her hand in our soup to take something out of our food ( It is open kitchen) and sent it to our table! When we asked, the Waitress said that the tofu wasn't cooked so the chef took it out !!! We had to leave.....don't eat there

One of the best amenities meals I have ever eaten. Had the pork tan tan.. my expectations are high and the food lived up to its quality and taste. My only criticism is that it took a very long time gor the food to be served.

On first impressions we were excited to try this restaurant, however it went downhill from there. After 45 minutes our drinks finally arrived, then after an hour some of food arrived. 10 minutes later another of the dishes we ordered arrived. After querying where the remaining 2 meals were we were told the orders had not gone through. As we were needing to get to the theatre we asked for the bill. Sometime later this arrived, charging us for all the meals ordered, including the ones that never arrived and a 12.5% service charge. They eventually removed the missing meals and the service charge. By this point we had been in the restaurant for over 2 hours. The food that did arrive seemed very good but the service was dreadful.

Firstly the tempura was delicious and crunchy. The reason we removed service charge was because we were seated in front of the kitchen which was directly in the range of the draught coming from the door whenever waiting customers were building up and propping the door open. We asked the service staff to ask the customers to move/close the door but nothing happened so we asked to move seats. It really ruined things. A shame as they had an excellent manager who paid attention to our nut allergy requirement.

The general manager Was really helpful with suggestions, also prajwal was pretty quick with the service and attentive.

The experience was bad . Food was fine , but the manager lacked mannerism . He was not being polite towards his employees and was seen screaming. This unfair atmosphere made me loose my appetite.

The experience was not at all good. The food was fine , but I lost my appetite after seeing how rude and ill mannered the manager was at the store towards his staff. Would not recommend the scene to anyone.

Always understaffed, always incredibly slow

the buns was nice however overpriced, the service was dreadful didn't listen and was distracted with other people got order wrong and didnt care when asking for the bill took over 25 minutes and even then we had to ask 2 more times to then be hit with an automatic service charge 12.5%!!!! which is ludicrous then got chased out the door by staff

Both ramen and the mocktails were fantastic. We had a lovely meal, and the staff was helpful & kind as well despite the busy hours. Thank you, will be back.

If my wife says it's the best, then it's the best! Haha Joking apart! Shoryu is amazing! It maintains a standard of excellence and service in any unit and the one in Oxford is not far behind. For those who like this style of food, I highly recommend it!

I wanted to take my husband and children for an enjoyable evening out for my husband's birthday. Unfortunately, I feel totally dissatisfied with the whole experience. The food was unimpressive, ambience cold, drab - awful tbh and the 'service' was non existent. Rude staff, slamming dishes of food and drinks down on front of us with a glare. Absolutely no attempt to make the experience pleasant and yet you get charged a 12.5% service charge! £140 for a very bad experience. I left really wishing I had booked elsewhere. For that kind of money I expect to get a good meal and decent service not a souless, worse than a bad canteen waste of time. Never to be repeated

Well, it's predominantly a ramen house with a few other bits on the menu. Simple, clean and you g pleasant staff. They bang the drums nor each new customer. My family enjoyed their food, mine was cold, barely warm and when l complained,l was told it's supposed to be like that. Warm /cold rice, cold meat raw veg...too little time in the microwave Shame.....stick to noodles l guess..

Just went today. Very bad service! We sat down for 10 minutes but no one came to us. However, after we started to eat, there were up to five waiters keep coming up asking whether we were fine - which is a bit too much. Then as long as we finished one dish, someone would pop out and ask "do you want me to clear this plate for you?" And this lasted until we finish our last one - seemed that they just want to kick us out ASAP!

The best vegan ramen 🍜 I've ever eaten!!

We thought we'd give it a try as the chain has a cult following. Staff who sat us didnt understand english then went off and hung around by the service hatch. Sent over another girl who was nice to take the order and understand my allergy. Asked for table water and didnt get it. Other tables got sat and served before us. Food finally came it was lukewarm and not a huge portion. 2 very limp bits of broccli. No checkbacks and had to hassle them to pay and leave. Then got slammed with a 4 95 service charge. For what? They didnt do anything Wont return or recommend

I am affraid our experience was not a good one but it seems very popular. Lots of Asian customers so it must be doing something right.

If the guest comes earlier, they have empty table, they should assign to have those emptytable. But they didn't, need to ask why keeping guests to wait, then they react.

The food is good and the quality is always consistent but this restaurant is continuously let down by the awful service. Whether it's packed or empty, it takes an age to receive drinks or for the bill. Like the food quality, the speed in which it comes out to you is also good but the negligence by the front of house team really let's the restaurant down. There seems to be little to no communication or organisation. Go for the ramen, but add an extra hour to your parking!

Unfortunately, a bit of a mixed bag on our visit. We had a chicken wing that wasn't completely cooked and a shame, but my partner didn't enjoy her food. I, however enjoyed my ramen and the other chicken wings and gyozas. They did offer us a replacement dish or a refund on the chicken wings, which we accepted, they also offer a small discount as an apology. These things do happen...

Deteriorated, wouldn't come again

Service was fast. Staff were nice. Food was good, but i found a piece of plastic in the broth 🤷🏻‍♂️

I got the tonkotsu ramen, and the taste was OK (the soup was thin, but the garlic and chili pepper added was just right, and the noodles were spread out, so it might be a good idea to ask for them to be firmer). I gave this number of stars because the soup was not very warm.

Great & reasonably priced Japanese food - it's very close to being authentic I'd say which is a huge plus. The ramen is lovely - I've had twice. The gyoza is also delicious. It doesn't seem very organised and it's always busy, so it's difficult to find seats. I'd definitely go there again nevertheless, the ramen is definitely worthwhile.

Food was ok. As soon as the bill came, i immediately thought that it was ridiculously expensive. I didn't take time to read it properly as i was in a rush to leave. After reading other reviews on here, it appears that they add an extra service charge onto the bill without your consent! I paid £75 for £45 worth of food. Absolute rip off. I will be emailing the restaurant to request a copy of my receipt and taking the matter further.

We came here for a late lunch on New Year’s Eve. While the ramen was enjoyable, we waited almost an hour for our food and our waiters were not really helpful or knowledgeable when we had questions about the different meal options. For this reason we probably won’t be back.

Shoryu used to be one of the best ramen shops in London.. but not anymore I think.. Reception lady was nice and pleasant.. but one of the servers put the noodle bowls down with a bang.. so if she’s not happy with her job, she should just quit and not take it out on the customers 😡

We had an evening meal and had to wait around 5-10 minutes for a table whilst there were tables available. The food was delicious plenty of choices on the menu. The gyoza was really great. The servers were friendly and helpful.

I haven't been to Shoryu in a long time but I was just reminded why I love this place. The food is exceptional and just perfect on a cold day like today. I was especially impressed with Prajwal who greeted, seated, and looked after me. A very friendly and courteous young man! Thank you so much and good luck with your studies!

The waiter immediately found us a great seat and waited for us to choose so that we wouldn’t have to call him. The waiter asked if there were any allergies and warned which dishes contained this product. We took discounted dishes, ramen and vegetarian ramen. With a discount, each dish cost 9.99. Fast service, arrived in just 10 minutes. An excellent, quick option for a quick lunch if you don’t want fast food. Restaurant quality food. After paying the bill, we were invited to write a review and were given cocktails. I'm glad I came here, it was very comfortable and delicious. I recommend it.

White Natural Ramen is my vegan go to. However the service isn’t amazing and the ramen is on the pricier side for what it is. It’s great if you want a convenient location (Westgate) and if you want a bowl of something warm in the winter.

Good service, ambience and food. The Ramen was tepid which our waiter Prajwal went out of his way to rectify and make us happy. He’s 2 of the 4 stars. The frozen beer is icy beer froth. Interesting but more of a gimmick - not worth wasting glass space for when real beer could be in its place..

Extremely understaffed. Had to do everything on my own. Waited 10min to be seated and 20min to take my order. Still they charged for service fee.

Excellent ramen! Freshly made noodles and broth with all the right toppings. Cold Japanese beer on tap. Nice bar area to sit at if dining alone, as I was after a long day of Xmas shopping. My waitress Mitali was very friendly and helpful.

The food it’s self was good, not amazing but good. The ramen broth was lovely but everything else had no flavour. Chicken wings were amazing. Over charged us for our drinks and then argued with us for sometime and wouldn’t reduce the bill which lead us to remove the service charge which I’ve never done before ! so we won’t be returning unfortunately. Some of the staff were good, others not so much… I would expect more from a Japanese restaurant.

Really slow service on a weekend but friendly and decent food

We love Japanese food. After we placed an order we waited for over 40min and in a mean time waiter brought me a beer which I never ordered. In about an hour after we entered restaurant we left hungry as we didn’t get any food up there. Maybe the food is good, but we didn’t had chance to try it.

We sae this restaurant first time when visiting Oxfors and loved the food so when we went back with our friends, we had to eat here. Love the Kimchi Seafood Ramen😊

We payed a good amount of money for what was a very poor and not very nice meal. There is already a service charge added to the bill when you order everything through your phone. Our food didn’t arrive at the same time either. And left feeling wretched. Would definitely avoid this place.

Ramen from Japan is a good choice without having to go to London. The kid's menu is very cheap, with beans, small bowls of ramen (reasonable portions) and ice cream (with matcha and noodle chocolate) at £7. Every time I go to Oxford, dining is one of my priorities. Newly added in September 2023, the kids menu has been cancelled,!

Excellent food takes time for cooking. Highly recommend if you don't need a rush meal.

Shoryu is a must visit! The staff were not only attentive but also genuinely passionate about their craft, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. Special thanks to Rahul and Harish to make our day memorable! I'll be coming back to explore more of their menu, and I can't wait to embark on another flavorful journey at this remarkable ramen restaurant.

The wait for food after order is unbearable. More than 45 minutes at 3pm on Sunday - real waste of time when you’re here for shopping! Ramen is good but probably not worth the wait.

I forced my partner to go for ramen as he didnt really feel like it. It was excellent, he hoovered it down:) win for me, well done to chefs!

I wanted to like this place a lot more than I did. I ordered the takoyaki (nice but a little too stodgy), a katsu curry (only chicken - not very authentic and a little bland), and an iced oolong tea. With the mandatory service charge (which I wouldn't have minded paying if the service had been more attentive), that came to £30, for a meal that would have been no more than 1700円 even in Tokyo. Poor value - I won't be going back.

Food is decent. Service, even when the restaurant is half full, was abysmal. It took a full twenty minutes (and two questions to a waitress) before we got tap water, and a full 45 minutes for a ramen and two rice dishes. Absolutely shocking. Heads should roll.

We stepped inside, the half of the restaurant been empty. All the empty tables been reserved. So they asked us to eat outside in 15°..... They forgot to serving my food, but they asked me how is it taste! I will consider to go somewhere else next time, If they keep the tables empty...

Service was incredibly slow. After 20 minutes no one had come to the table, not even to ask for drinks, and we had to call the waiter to actually come and take our order. Took half an hour for the edamame to arrive and this was even before the drinks or tab water arrived - we had to ask for the drinks (ice tea and a coke) twice. This was on a Monday at 2pm so it’s not like it was prime time. It is infuriating that they have the nerve to automatically add 12.5% tip to the bill. The food was good, but the service is so poor that it's not worth going just for the food. I recommend you spend your money elsewhere unless they get better staff/management. There are lots of lovely places to eat at Westgate.

I write this as a loyal customer of Shoryu’s parent company, Japan Centre, for over 20 years. However, as many other reviewers have pointed out for a while now, the service in this restaurant is terrible. Yet management are clearly doing nothing to fix the issue. The staff are indifferent at best and don’t seem have any basic customer service training, or maybe they just don’t care - our drinks arrived way after our food. This was on a fairly quiet weekday lunchtime, so the staff were hardly run off their feet. The customer service is not worth the automatically added 12.5% service charge - which I should have requested taking off the bill. The food was thankfully fine, though not amazing. The final cherry on the visit was experiencing the toilets, which are filthy. It’s obvious that no proper cleaning is taking place, despite a cleaning rota sheet that indicated they had been cleaned (once) that day. They need a full deep clean. There are plenty of other similar restaurant options in Oxford where I’d rather spend my money, and it is not a cheap dining option either. Unless these issues are addressed I won’t be returning.

Food was as good as in any branch, but despite there being four staff members talking at the back of the restaurant it took them five minutes to notice that customers had entered and another five minutes to seat us, despite the restaurant being half empty. It then took two members of staff to figure out how to use the card reader. Also, prepare to be guilt tripped into giving a pound to charity when your bill comes.

The broth is great. The noodles can be better. Overall quite nice ramen.

I tried Shoryu Ramen once in London but didnt enjoy it as much as this branch. My girlfriend and I came here for lunch. We ordered the spicy ramen and the buns. The ramen came in a big portion. The soup is tasty. The noodle is perfectly cooked (not too soft). The buns we had are ok. We put a bit of soy sauce and chili oil on top. The staffs are lovely. The gentlemen who took our order was really helpful and explained clearly on the menu. Will definitely come back.

Avoid this place. Service is RUBBISH. Staff Rahul would pretend not seeing you when you wanted to order. How rude is that? Food is just average, not the most authentic Japanese food. In case you really want to eat here, stay away from the QR code ordering thing as you would be forced to pay them the so called “discretionary” service charge which they definitely don’t deserve being paid.

This service was unbelievable. When I went their with my friends the last week, we experienced some let downs. We just wanted to eat our lunch there but when we arrived, the servers welcomed us very impolite and we had to wait there another ten minutes for our table. The worst thing was that we had to wait about 25min for our food. Nevertheless, the food was really good and particularly,I give it a 2 out of 5.

Do not recommend, poor service. Chefs are good but the servers are shocking. The servers didn’t take our order properly, missing items, food got sent to the wrong table and then they tried to give us food that had been sat at another table and lied about re- making it fresh. I have been here many times and it’s sad to see they hygiene standards and service has slipped so poorly. I would go somewhere else or go to a different branch.

We wasted 30-40mins to wait there. When we were just the next one to get inside and they didnt let us in because we want to have a table of 7….. during this 30-40mins 7of us just stand in queue ..if they couldn’t serve a table for 7 , why they didn’t tell us when we were in queue in that 30mins?????????? They even didn’t think about to help us split to 2 table (3+4)

Service was extremely poor. Forgot items and also food didn't come as ordered. Wouldn't recommend. The food is nice whenever it arrives however.

The food is amazing, hands down the best ramen I have ever had. But service is absolutely horrible. I have been there multiple times, and most often I had to ask for water multiple times, they have messed up my order more than once, and it's really difficult to get attention from a waiter. And they add 12.5% service charge for this!

I had several good experiences here, unfortunately my visit last week compelled me to leave a negative review here. The broth and ramen was good as usual, but me and my family had to wait for more than 40 minutes for it to arrive, with the pork belly somehow being cold despite the broth being hot. I didn’t really understand what took so long especially when the restaurant wasn’t even full. Combined with the price tag of almost £15 per ramen, this is simply unacceptable.

Contrary to the negative reviews, we had a really nice experience here. My husband said that it was “the best ramen he’s ever had in the UK” which says a lot as he’s had LOTS of ramen. Great portion sizes, delicious broth and we were served very quickly. It was very packed when we arrived but they still found a table for us which was great. Only comment would be that we got two different ramens, the signature one and the thick broth one which promised a thicker broth and two eggs, but the ramen was identical to mine, I’m not sure if it was a mistake or you need to think about how to make the differentiation clearer, we tasted each others and could not tell the difference. Regardless, food was yummy and everything was great and will be back again.

Don't come here if you cherish your time. Forty minutes waiting time for three ramens... which came cold. The food is okaish at best. Does not worth it. P.S. if you have already ended up in this time trap DO NOT order mochi. They are rather disgusting.

I recently visited a restaurant that had one of the best katsu curry dishes I have ever tasted. The restaurant was cozy and clean, with friendly staff and a relaxing atmosphere. Before the main course, I ordered takoyaki as the starter, which were balls of fried dough filled with octopus pieces, topped with mayonnaise and bonito flakes. They were hot and tasty, and added some variety to the meal. The katsu curry was served with a generous portion of crispy chicken, rice, and a rich and creamy sauce that had the perfect balance of spice and sweetness. The chicken was tender and juicy, the rice was fluffy and fragrant, and the sauce was smooth and flavorful. The dish was satisfying and delicious, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves katsu curry or wants to try something new.
