Whilst the waiter was lovely, the food was extremely poor. Over cooked starters and main was inedible, hard dry dauphenssaire potatoes and over cooked hake. They did remove the cost of my main from the bill as I wasn't able to eat it but the quality of the other mains were also poor. It was such a shame as most of the reviews on here are really good.

Very pleasant service. Ceaser salad was very nice, no manky limp lettuce. Lovely crisp little gem lettuce with lots of crispy croutons. A nice Ceaser sauce with it. Nice warm ciabatta with olive oil and balsamic Pepperoni pizza was nice too, the only downside was the pizza was a bit oily... I'd definitely visit again

I was staying in the hotel so a friend and I booked to eat here. It looked clean, and there was music playing. Our waitress was absolutely lovely, got us drinks, took our orders and the food arrived in good time. I ordered gf lamb shank with mash and veg. I've had this in various places and it's usually a pre cooked in the bag purchased from a catering company. The lamb was tender, but very dry. Whatever the jus was there was very little of it. The mashed potato was strange, it resembled a crumb texture and trying to make it stay on the fork without moisture was impossible. The veg was a mix of three green varieties, I think one was long stem broccoli, another appeared to be parsley and I couldn't decide the third green one. I was hungry but I could only manage half it was so dry. My friend ordered steak cooked "pink" and it arrived exactly as requested, but throughout the meal he kept finding small lumps of gristle which wasn't very pleasant. His peppercorn sauce, grilled tomatoes and chips were all very good. The pudding and coffee were fine. Would I eat here again, I'm afraid not. The food was a strange texture and it became difficult to converse after the music was suddenly turned up much louder. I never enjoy leaving a critical review but this really was disappointing.

We were unfortunate enough to be staying elsewhere - very close by - and suffered an appalling offering of uncooked pizza, over cooked cod and flaccid chips from an unimaginative bar menu. Desperate for dinner after a 6 hour drive and it now being 8:30pm on Friday night the weekend that SailGP hit town, we despaired of finding anything quickly but a quick visit to Google and TripAdvisor flagged up Steve's Brasserie just 2 minutes walk away. WHAT a difference! Engaged and interested staff, an enthusiastic chef clearly very focussed on his diners' experience. Three courses of excellent quality, thoughtful menu, well prepared and presented served by knowledgeable staff. Fantastically silky red pepper hummus - dipped in frequently by my husband with his already yummy prawns - by the time I remembered to show you we'd already scoffed the lot! My rissotto was fabulous, rich with parmesan and very well seasoned, the red curry was delicious with succulent chicken, beautifully cooked rice (and yes, my turn to sneak bites!) Pudding was extraordinarily good, coconut mango and pineapple crumble for me, who knew how good this combo could be? A banana pannacotta and toffee ice cream was the inspired pairing consumed by himself! We'll be back and definitely will be booking into the hotel next year! Congratulations all around and thank you :-) P.s The wine list is original and interesting too!

As regulars to this Hotel for Christmas lunch we thought we would receive similar professional service to other years. Arrived about 12:30 for 13:00 start. After being seated we asked for drinks menu to order wine and bubbly for our table. We were told to go to the bar for all drinks. This caused a gathering at the bar which was difficult to comply with social distancing also we did not go back although we would have purchased more. Food was acceptable, Service of the food was extremely poor staff stood around perimeter looking and appeared to be waiting for the last person in room to finish eating before clearing any tables. This routine continued throughout, resulting in more than half the guests leaving before coffee and mince pies served, we left after 4pm without being served coffee and mince pies. We would need reassurance service will be improved significantly before considering The Continental for our 2022 Christmas Lunch. Disappointing not value for money.

This should easily be in the top 10 restaurants in Plymouth. I think locals might think it's for residents of the New Continental Hotel only but it's not. Friendly, well managed, cheerful staff, comfortable, well spaced and laid out, great service and great food served hot! Excellent choice of menu from pizzas to big choice of steaks. And good value for money. We'll be going again.

My wife and I had been looking forward to our visit to Steve's Brasserie under the New Continental Hotel for several weeks- however, that quickly changed with our arrival. Yes, it's in a basement, and that just about sums it up. Dull decor, featureless lighting, and, er, a few cheap looking plastic plants here and there. I know that many public places have stripped down ornamentation as a result of CV-19, but I can honestly say that this restaurant has had zero thought put into its design- and, more importantly, had zero atmosphere. Given that this was the last night of the 'Eat Out To Help Out' scheme, and a warm bank holiday evening, we were very surprised by the lack of people in the restaurant- just a few tables occupied. I'm a vegetarian, and have been for nearly 40 years, but I'm not a fussy eater (apart from no meat or fish!), I just like some care, thought and quality ingredients put into my food. I had been looking forward to one of the pizzas- however, the pizza menu had been reduced to a Margherita, with additional toppings of your choice- I expected (as on the online menu) to receive a pizza created by a chef to demonstrate their culinary skills, not a 'pick'n'mix'. I chose a vegetable curry instead, rather than the bog-standard veggie burger or pasta- the vegetarian alternatives generally found in Plymouth restaurants. Big mistake. The curry consisted of 3 cauliflower florets, a couple of slices of carrot, a few peas and and chickpeas in a watery, flavourless sauce that didn't even have the remotest of 'bites'. The ingredients must have cost pence. Oh, and a poppadom and very small dish of mango chutney. My wife's pizza was drowned in a mountain of cheese, masking the meat's taste, and which she was (very unusually) unable to finish. OK, this is in crisis times, and restaurants have had to make adjustments. However, we have been in quite a few over the last couple of months, and in every case the staff have bent over backwards to ensure a warm welcome for customers and striven to provide excellent food and service- all of which are going to be extremely important if a restaurant is to survive the economic firestorm now facing the country. 2 Things I don't understand: if the meal had been good, we would have ordered additional drinks (bottle of wine- despite the remarkably short wine list for a hotel restaurant, maybe a brandy, coffee) and dessert. We dropped out after the main course- we did not want to spend any more money here- and we won't be coming back either, so the restaurant's loses out. Why on earth didn't the restauarant make an effort?. Secondly, don't mainstream chefs ever bother to look at recipe books by Jamie, Greens, Ottolenghi, Hugh F-W etc??? Vegetarian food isn't just burgers, pizzas and basic pastas- there's some great stuff out there (I suggest a trip to the superb Cosmic Kitchen for the chef on last night). Service was uninspired- and for the first time ever in a restaurant- when asked the usual, 'is everything ok?' (I always say 'fine'), I was very politely negative. No response from the waiter, and nothing from the kitchen. I have never, ever written a negative review for a restaurant, but feel so badly let down by Steve's Brasserie that I am driven to post this. Definitely the worst meal experience I can remember (and I'm 65!).

Booked a table here (within the New Continental Hotel) as it is next to the Plymouth Pavillions and actively promotes their Early Evening Menu as "Pre Theatre" dining. As the weather was showery we decided to take advantage of a break in the weather and arrived in advance of our 5:30pm booking for drinks in the bar. A rather disinterested young man continued organising his bottles while I waited and finally turned towards me but on my commencing to order he turned away and left the area toward reception without a word of explanation.. As he returned several minutes later my wife surmised he had gone for the tray for his till and had not yet opened for service. I attempted to order cocktails but was informed "they don't do cocktails". I tried to order a couple of simple mixed drinks but finally gave up and ordered a whiskey. I asked if they had any nuts or nibbles (or even a packet of crisps but they did not). I have been to many hotels and know drinks can be expensive but £15 for a G&T and a single malt if extortionate. The room was beautifully decorated for Christmas but none of the staff had bothered to turn on the lights on the tree or any others strung around the room. We finished our drinks and went downstairs to the restaurant and were welcomed by a young a solitary waiter who offered allowed us topics our table as we were the only customers (8-10 arrived during our visit but on a Saturday night you would expect more - perhaps they knew something I didn't.) We went straight for the bottle of wine I ordered for our meal (as they use the same bar that doesn't do cocktails) Sadly the young waiter who delivered it splashed wine around my glass ( I wasn't asked if I wanted to taste) and I was forced to call him back to clean it up. I cannot fault the meal itself as at 2 courses for £17 or 3 for £21 is good value and I thoroughly enjoyed my Pork Belly which had slightly charred crackling and the Seafood Pasta definitely impressed my wife but service between courses was slow as reported in other reviews. This hotel/restaurant could do so much better if it raised the standard of it's staff service.

Was looking forward to this. We were in a group of 12 so preordered.Service was very slow, nearly 40 minutes between starters and main.I think I chose the wrong dishes, the prawn starter was 4 prawns that were obviously out of a bag and defrosted, the main of sea bass on crab risotto was exceptionally bland and had the texture of rice pudding rather than risotto, with a flavourless sauce. However others in the party really enjoyed their dishes, I tried some of the belly pork and it was really good.Steve's gets 3 because of the others food rather than my own experience, not in a rush to come back.

We booked a pre theatre meal for 9 of us on Friday night, food was pre ordered in advance and the whole evening was very nice and relaxing, we weren’t rushed to eat and the food was delicious, hot and all served at the same time. A lot of effort clearly goes into the presentation of the dishes and the portions were perfect. The restaurant itself is only a 5 minute walk from Plymouth’s Theatre Royal and is spotlessly clean and welcoming. We will definitely be back and would highly recommend it as it meant we could have a relaxed meal knowing that we would be in time for our show.

We ate here whilst staying at the hotel for a night and were very impressed. Although the hotel recommended booking, we went in at 5.30pm and there was only one other family in there. I was most impressed with the children's meal which our daughter had. She chose the fish and chips and it was a refreshing change to see proper fish served to children rather than fishfingers. I tried a bit of it and I think the batter was the nicest I have ever had! So big thumbs up to the chef! I had the belly pork which was very tasty although the mustard mash was a little dry. Hubby opted for pizza which looked delicious and he reported was very flavoursome.

We opted to visit this restaurant simply because they offered early dining for anybody attending the adjacent theatre. The waiting staff were excellent and the fish & chips, when it came, was very good. The problem was that we had to ask twice when we were going to be served as diners who had arrived after us were being served before us! Fair play to the restaurant however as they omitted our desserts from our bill. We can recommend the fish & chips, the day we dined it was Pollack, which were cooked to perfection and presented in well thought layout.

Early evening meal and the restaurant was very quiet. The waitress was very charming and welcoming. I chose beetroot and goat cheese starter and mushroom risotto main from the early evening special menu. The starter was very fresh, well seasoned and generous; I loved the toasted walnuts. The mushroom risotto was amazing! As a vegetarian I am used to mushroom risotto as a classic option but it's usually stodgy rice, button mushrooms and too much cheese. Steve's Brasserie mushroom risotto was the best I've ever had anywhere! Great selection of wild mushrooms, perfectly cooked rice and Parmesan cheese served separately so you can add as much as you like. I'd definitely recommend a visit here.

Wow amazing food. Staying for one night in the hotel and decided to go down to Steve's Brassiere for dinner we were concerned as we were the only ones in there until about 20 minutes later and another person arrived. 7PM we were making jokes thinking this is going to be far from fresh because of the quietness, even assuming perhaps it gets more customers later, the candles weren't lit but this didn't bother me either as the lighting was nice and sombre. The waiter was pleasant and seated us he gave us five minutes for deciding on drinks, which was fine as we knew exactly what we wanted, another 10 or so minutes gone and we knew what we wanted for dinner and he came and took our order: olives, caibata with balsamic olive oil, duck breast with purple sproating and baby carrots and leaks, pork belly with mustard mash etc, we passed on desserts but did have a coffee. It was absolutely delicious and far from the mediocre meals we were expecting which i genuinely felt bad for thinking thats what we would get. Three of us had pre-show dinner. We did not book a table beforehand, but when we walked in there were two or three tables available. The waiter hummed and ha'd about adding a chair to a reasonable sized round table to accommodate us. He was a bit slow taking our drinks orders and giving us the menus, but was very pleasant. he appeared to be working all the tables on his own, although other staff were delivering drinks and food. The food was delicious. My daughter and I both had the duck, and my husband had the curry. The portion sizes were perfect - not too much. Dessert was absolutely divine - creme brûlée with shortbread. However, our waiter was slow taking our order for the dessert, even though we had made it clear we were going to the Pavilions for the Show at 7.30. we were staying in the New Continental and after a 5 hour trip to Plymouth ( usually 3 hrs 10 mins) we went to the Brasserie since we were tired, hungry and couldnt be bothered to walk the short way to the centre. i feared the worst as a hotel dependent restaurant but i couldnt believe how wrong i was. the decor is plain but we were welcomed by a very polite and helpful waiter. the food was very good - we had a wide range of things - scallops, burger, sea bream etc. everything was freshly cooked and no delays ( admittedly they were not busy ) and very well presented. 3 of us, all starters and mains and one shared pudding since we were so full with a £18 bottle of wine,3 beers and coffees came to £92 - excellent value. we left a tip and the waiter said he would split it with the chef if that was OK which i thought a nice touch. everything about the meal was great and cheered up a long and frustrating day.

We ate in Steve's Brasserie the first night we stayed in Plymouth & it was part of the New Continental Hotel. The place was modern and clean plus the place that we sat, which I like, we could see the kitchen which was very clean. The meal was enjoyable and the young girl that served us was very polite & helpful. We were the only two in the restaurant and that was around 7pm. I don't know why this was because I found it very enjoyable. It wasn't overly priced either but maybe it was just because it was a Monday night although I thought more of the guests of the hotel would have been in as it was fully booked due to the Rod Stewart concert on the Tuesday. Would definitely eat in it again.

Ate here late at 9ish and was alone on a very quiet night. I ate the chorizo scotch egg which was good. I thought it a little bland at first but no, the heat catches up on you! For mains I had the sea bream on pasta with scallops again a good fish and a large portion. The waiter was very attentive and chatty whilst not over bearing.Overall a good meal.

A nicely decorated interior and an interesting and varied menu and good, friendly waiting staff should excite the diner. It was, however, a slight disappointment in the food department.Whilst perusing the menu we ordered some crackling and apple sauce but it was neither crispy nor crackling and we followed this with a medium rare fillet steak with peppercorn sauce and a chicken coconut curry. My steak was not cooked medium rare (as requested) and arrived very rare to the point it was cold in the middle and the sauce was thin and lacking in both flavour and taste. A further few minutes on the grill brought it up slightly up to how I actually prefer my steak but still not on the money. My husband however, advised that his chicken coconut curry was very nice. They accept children in the restaurant but there was no actual specific children’s menu although we were advised that they offered most of the dishes on the menu in half/smaller portions. Unfortunately, the menu is aimed more for adult consumption and even the pasta dishes were offered as the creamy or carbonara type dishes which are not generally liked by the younger children. They did, however very kindly conjure up 2 small portions of pasta with a basic tomato sauce and which was much appreciated and enjoyed by the little ones (may be worth adding to the menu for future use).Finishing with the one dessert of a white chocolate brownie which was not great either, I could understand how, when we left, at around 8pm on a Saturday evening, it was empty all but 2 solitary diners. The wine list was small but reasonably priced and food is about average in respect of price. The service we received was very good. This would not be one for us out of choice, for a return visit, and I would not, personally, feel happy to recommend it to family and friends as it failed miserably to impress me. Not one to be repeated.

The food was exceptional quality, beautifully presented and tasted divine! The Staff were extremely attentive and friendly. A beautiful restaurant with a very relaxed atmosphere. We will return!

Tucked away under The New Continental Hotel next to Plymouth Pavillions, thereby excellent if you're having a meal before a show. We had the set price 3 course meal. £15.95! Fantastic value. Lovely food presentation and really nice atmosphere. Good lighting, but not too bright, and tables not crammed together.

This excellent place is actually called Steve's Brasserie, not Brassiere! But that spelling mistake is the only thing you'll find wrong with it. Service is friendly and efficient; the food is freshly cooked, hot and tasty; and the value is excellent.Having eaten here twice in the last 7 months, I'm very happy to strongly recommend it. Each time has been excellent. Steve's really is the kind of unassuming place you shouldn't overlook and it puts many far more lauded restaurants to shame.

I personally find the atmosphere to be somewhat stark and plain but the service was well orchestrated and food quickly served. Staff good. Advise future customers for parties to be clear with management which menus will be available and fix prices accordingly. Pre-dinner drinks marred by slow service at the ground floor bar because another large group with ours swamped the staff. Overall I think this is a worthy restaurant but I wonder if getting there, parking, overall service and slghtly high prices make it worthwhile.

Booked Steves Brasserie on the last minute as we were struggling to find somewhere to eat before a show at the Pavilions. So glad we tried it, the waiter was extremely curtious & professional. The restaurant is well set out with comfortable seating. We all opted for the Pre Theatre Set Menu where you can choose 2 or 3 courses. Five of us, all ordering different dishes and we all thoroughly enjoyed our food. The vegetarian option was risotto with feta and was gorgeous. This restaurant needs to be better promoted as it's close proximity to the pavilions, parking & great food makes it a perfect choice!

We wanted to eat before a show at the Pavilions. The Brasserie was smart, relaxed and the service was excellent. There was a great deal on a pre show menu. The waiter was really helpful offering advice on the wines and asking the chef to adapt the menu for a dietary need. The food was lovely and it made a great start to our evening.

We were at the New Continental Hotel as part of a Group on a Business Course and Lunch was provided. First piece of good news was that Lunch was a Three Course Affair and not - as can often be - Buffet Style. Choices were limited - as you may expect - but still ample. We had Fruit Salad and Whitebait followed by the same Main Course of Cod Loin with Mash and Ratatouille followed by a simple Dessert of Fruit Cocktail and Two Scoops of Ice Cream. Good Quality Food and very well presented and served by attentive staff in a very clean welcoming Restaurant. Certainly enough to warrant a return visit to try the Full Evening or Lunch Menu.

We ate at an early time so were the first people there - before the chef! So this meant a high quality of service and attention from the lovely waitress. Food was lovely and very filling so we were disappointed not to fit in a desert! But that's not the fault of anyone at Steve's Brasserie! Would recommend this place to anyone who was visiting Plymouth :)

We were running late for a concert at Plymouth pavilions and popped into Steve's rather than going to the Mount Pleasant which is our usual destination before any concerts. Well let me just say that we certainly won't be going anyway else now we have visited Steve's, what a great welcome we received, the waiter helped us to choose the quickest main courses which were wonderfully prepared and presented. This place is tucked away and we didn't even know it existed, what a great find. I would highly recommend it if you want to eat near to the pavilions.

We were a party of 8 that hadn't booked and were staying close by. The waiter was polite and said that he would just take a few minutes to set a table for us and asked us if we would like to take a drink at the bar upstairs. The meal was fabulous as was the service, I would certainly recommend the food and have no hesitation in returning if I was in Plymouth.

After a few drinks in the bar we decided at the last minute to eat in the restaurant. We were welcomed in a friendly and professional manner. Were given waitress service which I think is standard. You can see the food being prepared and when our meals arrived we were not disappointed. They were large, filling and good value for money.
