The Copthorne had become a very run down jaded hotel. The outside has been smartened up a bit, rooms are being modernised and now the restaurant has been expensively and comprehensively changed. They are trying to appeal not only to the captive resident market but also to the public. This place needs a new thread.

I dined at Bentley's Brasserie as a late arrival at the hotel it sits within, the Copthorne Hotel Plymouth (see other review). The restaurant is, like the hotel, very dated in its furnishings hence the pass off as a brasserie to be in keeping with this theme. A Brasserie however relies on quality in what it is serving in order to firstly earn the title and secondly to be able to allow its guests to leave satisfied. The night I stayed the restaurant was very busy due to a very large group who were clearly staying in the hotel. The restaurant seemed short staffed in comparison and on reflection I'd be interested to know whether they knew these groups would be in and have consequently laid on more staff. On the note of staff however, they are wonderful. Due to the groups that were there you can imagine there was a delay in kitchen orders, though they kept me informed of waits and given the numbers there I was very impressed with how quickly they turned out my order. Special thanks to Eirini who looked after me very sympathetically given that there were some very loud guests in the corner of the restaurant that were clearly making both of our evenings uncomfortable! The staff are all very friendly and consistently wear a smile. The menu choices are quite limited (as you'd expect in a brasserie, I guess) though I'm not convinced on quality. I opted for the Pork Belly which was served on a bed of what appeared to be everyday peas with some potatoes and a "savoury bread pudding". Put bluntly, they clearly read this in the Brakes brochure and thought it would be a good idea, which it is not. It all lacked any quality and refinement which whilst this restaurant is fairly cheap in price, could have been easily achieved at a similar cost. The accompanying wine I chose was a Malbec at approximately £10 per glass. It was pleasant though I actually opted for the Merlot after which is quite a lot cheaper and in my opinion more palatable. I dined here again in the morning for breakfast which is more in line with what you'd expect from this budget hotel. But in that sense it managed my expectations and so it was a nod of "this is what you should get here". Advice to management? Drop the brasserie concept, it doesn't work. Serve up food and drink in line with the general brand and outfit of the hotel. But whatever you do, look after the staff - they are excellent.

We went here for lunch, and had a starter each with the platter to share, which was very generous in portion size. The food was tasty and the service was friendly. Great value.

Right where to begin... We arrived at the restaurant after a lovely walk in the pouring down rain so both of us were a bit wet. We stood at the entrance of the restaurant for 5 minutes but there seemed to be no one in sight. There were a few couples in the restaurant, but the restaurant was effectively empty. I had to prompt the person behind the bar to go and find a member of staff. When the waitress came out, I asked politely if there was somewhere to hang my coat, which looked liked it slightly perplexed her, not knowing whether to take my coat or sit us, the latter taking president. On sitting and deciding what to order, another couple entered the restaurant sat down and ordered at the same time as ourselves. Bread was duly brought out but unfortunately (or fortunate) I cannot eat wheat bread so asked for some gluten free bread. There was none in the kitchen so I had to do without. I was a bit annoyed at this point because plenty of establishments cater for everyone but obviously not the Copthorne. My partner did comment however that it was particularly good bread so this is seems is the one and only good reason to visit. We had just ordered mains so waited and waited some more but still none materialised. The couple who had ordered their food at the same time as ourselves received theirs and finished their but we still didn't have ours. There was no interaction from the waitress telling us where our food was so we called her over and enquired. We were told rather shortly that the food was on its way and after another 5 minutes or so our food came out. This is where the true nightmares of Bentley's Brasserie started. I had the pork lion which tasted okay, with cabbage and lardons and roast potatoes which my partner rather accurately described as something you would expect from a school dinner lunch. The roasts were appalling. They looked and tasted like they had been made for lunch and heated back up again for the evening meal rather than half cook potatoes and then finishing them off later when required. Judging by the time it took us to receive our food (well over 30 minutes) this would have been completely possible. The roasts were frankly not acceptable. Then my partners plate, the pie was again okay but the accompanying vegetables were a disgrace. The peas were like bullets, hardly worth even trying to eat and the mash, well yes it was mashed smoothly but no seasoning, so just bland and tasteless. What chef (if they actually call themselves this) cannot make mash potato? The waitress came over and asked if everything was alright which we promptly replied no, so she went off to get the DM (as she described). Using abbreviations to describe someone/ something to people not in the know for any business is considered rude. Luckily having worked in the restaurant trade for many a year, I understood. So we waited politely for the Duty Manager (called DM thereafter) to come over. Whilst waiting, the waitress then took it upon herself to come to the table and pick our plates up without even asking if we had finished whilst my partner and myself were in mid conversation. Before I could say anything she put the plates back down and said to herself 'maybe not' and walked off to then come back and tell us that the DM wanted to have the food in the kitchen to talk with the chefs about it and then asked if we were finished. We said it would be more beneficial to tell him about the food before he went to chat to the chefs but she whisked the plates off into the kitchen. Shortly after the DM came out and asked us what the problem with the food was, so we explained again and he was off back into the kitchen. He then came out again and told us that apart from the unseasoned mash, there was nothing wrong with the meal and what had been sent out was the standard of food that they always serve !! I queried about the roast potatoes and he told me exactly what I thought, that the potatoes had been cooked for the lunchtime menu and had just reheated them. He stated that there is no other way to cook roast potatoes for an evening which is a ridiculous statement. He asked us what we would like and we asked if there was any way to reduce the bill which he flatly refused. He asked us if we would like a complimentary drink offering us a coke and when we declined asked us what we would like. We asked about dessert which he said he could do which leads me to thinking if he could offer us two free desserts, why couldn't he remove some money of the meal? I would like to hasten to add that not once did the DM apologise and they way he spoke to us was damn right patronising. This was the last we saw of him and the flustered waitress was left to deal with us. So you would think this would be the end, but the desserts were just as appalling. My partner had a chocolate tart with hazelnuts and Chantilly cream. The tart was okay and the cream was UHT sprayed over the top of the hazelnuts which duly spread over the piece of slate, and was rather inedible. I had a bland tasteless lemon tart with raspberry sorbet which was served on a warm piece of slate, so the sorbet had effectively started to melt before the food was set down and my first action was to get a napkin and stop the liquid sorbet running off the slate and onto my trousers. What sort of restaurant serves cold desserts on warm dishes? Surely those in the kitchen would have an ounce of common sense between them to realise that this wasn't going to work. Quite frankly, this was the worst dining experience we have ever had !!

I should have known by how empty the restaurant was that it was going to be below average but as I was staying in the hotel I decided to give it a go. I was one of three tables in the hour I was there. I ordered the mushroom risotto which was possibly the worst risotto I have ever had! The rice wasn't even cooked properly! The portion was huge and after I picked away at it for a while, I couldn't stomach any more. The only decent thing about the meal was the free bread. Neither the host or waiter who were hanging around bothered to check back at any point so I couldn't complain about the sub-standard of food. And after paying the £15 for a poor risotto, I couldn't leave quickly enough. Aside from everything else, I was constantly disturbed by the banging and shouting in the kitchen and the noise from the bar. Don't waste your money on going here, there are numerous fantastic restaurants in Plymouth, many of them not far at all.

We went yesterday morning while awaiting our laundry to be done. Despite going against a rushing time frame because we came at half 9 and have only 30mins to eat, we find the experience top notch. Despite only 2 waiting staffs and dozens of tables with diners, they were attentive to your needs floating around to clear plates once it catches their attention. Very wide range of breakfast for pastry and cereals. Hot food was limited to english selection being 4 types but they have the premium selection, a choice of 6 or 7 of them with norwegian and english style serving haddock, kiplings, smoked salmons, egg benedicts etc on the request order with no extra charges. We really would have wish we werent in a hurry and we could slowy enjoy the ambience. Although i must emphasis the hashbrowns weelre rock hard with 5 pieces left and they didnt bother to replenish them. Great value for 11.95

When I last ate here in 2014, the food was mediochre and the service exceedingly poor, but as I was staying in the hotel and too tired to go out, thought I would give it another try, and what a pleasant surprise I had! The service was exemplary - very fast, friendly and helpful. There was no a-la-carte menu, presumably as it was mid-week, but the set menu had plenty of choices, however as I wasn't too hungry I opted for the bar menu from which I chose the ham & cheese omlette - I quickly was served with a fluffy omlette packed with what was obviously hand-carved smoked ham & cheese, with crispy fries and a tasty side salad with honey mustard dressing. The portion for a bar menu was more than I could manage, so if the chef is reading this, it wasn't beacuse of the lack of quality of your food that I didn't clear my plate, just my small appetite. Well done, Millenium Hotel Group - this restaurant and its staff are a real credit to you - I will definitly eat there again when I next stay in Plymouth.

went here with my wife for a special meal and was not let down. We were approached within one minute of arriving and offered a drink from the bar as we looked through menu. We were then taken into the dining area which was not busy. The décor was different but nice. The starter and main course we had was very nice and cooked to perfection. Although the sweets looked good we decided we had eaten enough already so opted for a coffee, which was very nice. Shall certainly go back again

I have been eating in this restaurant for quite a few years with a couple of groups, and l can honestly say the 2 Christmas meals l have had this week are the best so far. Starters were very filling, the main with turkey and very tasty veg and lovely sweets. The service from the staff equally as good. Nothing too much trouble if you wanted something different. Well done staff. Normally the food is good, but this is better. Keep it up. Will certainly keep visiting in 2015. Happy Christmas to all the staff and Thank you.

This restaurant has really upped their game!! We have been coming to the Copthorne for some years and have occasionally eaten at the restaurant. The last time we came we were amazed, so amazed that we ate there both nights of our stay!! The quality of the food has improved beyond all recognition and the value for money at £26 for three courses on the table d'hôte is fantastic value for money. The duo of spring lamb was delicious and the curried monkfish was almost to die for. Desserts were just gorgeous, the sticky toffee pudding being a particular highlight. All four of us were delighted with our food and intend to return as soon as possible, regardless of whether or not we were staying at the hotel. The restaurant staff went out of their way to meet our needs. It was an all together great experience. We will be back, and soon!!

Went to Bentley's in the Copthorne Hotel in Plymouth for an evening meal. Everything about the place was Brilliant. The staff were excellent and knowledgable and very friendly. The food was fantastic and the menu was not huge but something to tempt every pallet which was great. Will definitely go back again. Best to book as not large and as part of hotel who get a lot of coaches I expect the restaurant does get busy. BUT try it I found it exceptional

Ate here whilst staying at the Copthorne Hotel. There are two menus, one for the bar and one for the restaurant yet we were able to choose from either. I started with the goats cheese brushcetta (which they adapted as I am allergic to tomatos) and then I had the harissa lamb burger. Both courses were brilliant. The service from Louise was magnificant. She was so friendly and happy to help with any problems even though the one issue I did have wasn't with the restaurant. An additional bonus was that they took the Tastecard which I thought was good considering that it is a hotel restaurant.

Stayed at this hotel in April 12. Had 3 course dinner from a la carte menu. Food was average, tasty but nothing special. Had dinner on second night from bar menu. I found it below average. My wife had the chilli which was so spicy she could not eat it. We were the last ones left in the restaurant. So I did not want to complain as they were busy moving tables and setting up tables for breakfast. Felt like we were an inconvience as they were working around us. This restaurant Is OK to have a hotel meal. I would not specially come here for a night out. Carpets are stained which makes the restaurant look grubby.

Only been as a guest of a person staying there. It is bland hotel fare. neither good nor bad. You probably wouldn't eat here by choice. Nothing against it. A very enjoyable afternoon/ evening. The staff were on the ball most the time , but come teatime when the amount of people grew another staff member behind the bar would have kept the long queues down for drinks. The males in our group were saying that your prepaid ticket system was a better more efficient idea. The layout of covered /non covered seating areas was a good idea. Access for everyone was good although wheelchairs may have struggled on the rough ground. Families with pushchairs were fine. Everyone was welcome from babies to more mature members of the public. Dogs were on leashes and well behaved. Our group chose not to have food on site but the menus looked good and varied. Saying that, dirty chips at £7 I thought was expensive. The 1st entertainer was very talented, the guitarist was good and clear but could have had the volume down abit so people could hold conversations without shouting.... Next was a band called viscious kitten, now they were awesome... quite fast paced, straight into each song to another, good varied choices in songs, got people up dancing, young and mature. Thankyou to everyone who'd made our evening so enjoyable......see you at the next one.🍺🍻🍺🍷🍷🍽🧃🥤🧋
