Best fish n’ chips in Cleethorpes. By far. Fish n’ chips fresh, hot and cooked to perfection. Bloomin’ great pot of tea and buttered slices of bread with it, too. And the staff are exceptional. I live done South now, but was visiting the in-laws and we went here this eve and were served by the same lovely lady as we previously were a few years back, and my FIL asked how long she’d worked there, 37 years she said proudly! -Amazing!

Visited whilst on holiday 6th August at lunchtime. Welcomed and seated upstairs. Decor is very dated with door net curtains. Ordered homemade fish pie with chips and garden peas. Fish pie had limited fish including tiny prawns in a white sauce, topping was sliced potatoes. Would have been better just been noted on the menu as 'fish pieces in cream' Peas took me back to the 1970's at school, straight out the tin, dark in colour. Chips were nice and oil seemed fresh as light in colour however bland in taste. Two waitress were very pleasant and attentive. Wouldn't recommend much better restaurants in Cleethorpes.

Like many people I have been visiting Steel’s since I was a child. Always have fish and chips, but what a disappointment today! Staff as lovely as ever but fish and chips way below the standard we have all been use to. My fish was not fresh and certainly not white in colour! Never before has it been greasy but today a pool on my plate. Will not be visiting for the foreseeable future

Myself and my son were in the area so we decided to have a meal here. We telephoned to book a table and arrived mid afternoon to an almost empty downstairs room. We got seated and were given paper menus to peruse. The waitress brought the order of the couple who were sitting opposite us and soon after, another couple came in and after a while their order was taken. After about ten minutes, the last couple's food arrived and we still had not had our order taken. I had to beckon the waitress over to explain this and she said, "Oh, have I not taken your order?" Could she not remember? When we eventually received our food, it was nice but not exceptional. After our meal, I asked the waitress how much was owing and I paid by card. Whilst waiting for my son to return from the upstairs WC, I happened to glance at the bill that we had been given and realised it was not ours as it had different items on it to what we had had so I beckoned the waitress and explained. She then went off and after a while, she returned and apologised saying that I had paid the bill of the opposite table (who's occupants had left about twenty minutes earlier) and they had paid ours. So I had been overcharged by £5.20 which was refunded to me and the other people had, by our reckoning, been undercharged by around £10 as they had also ordered and consumed teas that were not even on their bill. This was not the enjoyable visit that I had hoped it would be!

We visited this old classic in Cleethorpes yesterday and it was sad to see in this post covid world what it has now become.Customers have to naturally be spread throughout the restaurant and so whole areas are empty and sealed off. They are also operating a vastly reduced menu and the food, traditional fish & chips really was not up to standard. The same meal and much cheaper could be had elsewhere in Cleethorpes. The staff are friendly and professional but anyone remembering this place at it`s old standards especially from years ago will be sadly disappointed.Lets hope it will soon regain its old reputaation.

Lockdown and living in Cambridge means that I haven't been able to experience Steels since 2020.A funeral nearby meant I could officially indulge with my first-ever takeaway from this Fish and chip heaven and it was just so good. Better even than I had remembered it.The fish was flaky and perfectly cooked while their were loads of proper chips. Its not the cheapest fish and chips in Cleethorpes but it is the best by a country mile.I can't wait for a proper visit once this COVID stuff is done, but this fix will keep me happy for a while yet.

We really liked the booth seating too, great for families and keeping the kids in their seats. ProsLoved the seating Loved that the meals came with a hot cup of tea Loved the bread and butter, proper home school and homely feel about the mealsGood prices Chips were great size portion Very covid aware and safe Beautiful, interesting building showing photos of yesteryear ConsDisappointed with the mixed seafood platter. The White fish which we presume was haddock had scales on the skin. Salmon was dry and over cooked. Sausages were not to our liking, quite meaty but didn't like the texture or flavour Would recommend for chips alone

On a day trip to Cleethorpes we asked a local to point us in the direction of a good fish and chip shop and they recommended Steels. We were fortunate to get the last table upstairs as it was fully booked for the rest of the day (running at lower capacity due to social distancing). We both ordered fish, chips and mushy peas with a side order of bread and butter. When it arrived we were so excited. It was freshly cooked with a crisp batter and the fish was so tasty and the chips were all cooked to perfection. I have to say they were the best fish and chips I have had in years. You gets what you pays for- and we decided to eat here rather than a standard seaside chippie. . We were very glad we did- yes you pay a bit more but this was the best quality fish and chips I can remember for a long while. They do other food as well, my wife's lasagne was also excellent. They take a pride in their meals and the presentation added to the experience. I agree with another reviewer that the atmosphere could have been improved by the background music being louder- it was barely audible, I think they were over-cautious because of the new regulations. We had to wear masks just for going up and down the stairs- not something that would unduly affect the R number. Also the staff were rather starchy and could have loosened up a little- but these are side issues, I would certainly go here again for the quality of the food.

Visited here a week or so after they re-opened from lockdown. We had to pre-book our table (which was expected) and were given a few rules on what to do/what not to do once we arrived. We had to wear masks until we got to our table, which was fine. We were seated upstairs, and due to social distancing, they were allocating every other table to customers to ensure a safe distance was maintained. Food was perfect (as always). We ordered the standard haddock & chips, and also had a pudding (which was home made and lovely!). However the service I felt was a little 'off'. We didn't receive our drinks till almost half way through our meal, and even then, we had to flag the lady down to ask for them. She almost proceeded to take our drinks order again until my husband stated that she already had the order written down. Once we'd ordered our desserts, we waited another 20+ minutes until they arrived, and then there was another delay before we could flag her down to get the bill. Obviously with 50% less customers, I would have expected slightly better service, but maybe the anxiety of the social distancing and the new rules got the better of her, I don't know? Also, this isn't the first meal I've had out since lockdown, and it was yet another restaurant that lacked atmosphere... nothing that can be done but a little music wouldn't go a miss. We did however dine out on the 50% discount that the government are offering so the price of the bill was perfect!!

Still the best fish and chips on the east coast. Have visited many times. This time for a COVID secure take away before strolling down the sea front. Food excellent as always. Fish fresh with the right amount of batter. Chips cooked just right. Much better than the variable new upstart which is Pappa’s fish and chips. Order on the web and collect there (yes, shock horror! Rejoice! The country's best fish and chip restaurant. And I'm pleased to report the standards are as high as ever.Steels re-opened on July 21, and we managed to get one of the 11 tables on the first Saturday lunchtime. And despite the social distancing and a nit of nervousness, normal service was resumed. This has got to be the friendliest place to eat. And the haddock was just superb - as good as I have ever had here. And while its a restricted menu, I was relieved to see that the jam roll poly was still available for afters. We both ordered a medium fish, half chips and a dish of mushy peas. We were served without having to wait for too long. I'm pleased I only ordered the medium fish as it was very ample. It had been cooked to perfection with lovely crispy batter. Even though we ordered half chips neither of us quite managed to finish them all, The mushy peas very very nice. Unlike most fish and chips in the area Steeles use vegetable oil. The food and service in this restaurant is exemplary and straddles the categories of ‘everyday luxury’ and ‘special treat’. A tenner for fish and chips with bread and butter and a hot drink is hardly extravagant but in Steeles this meal feels special and will probably be too much for most appetites. There are lots of alternative meals, and some tempting sweets which I have never had room for. Service is friendly, and solo diners feel valued equally to the many parties who use the restaurant. The provision of fish knives is an archaic but welcome touch. This is a lovely cafe, old fashioned and warm spirited. Highly recommended.

In what is becoming a crowded market, this fish and chip shop stays above the rest due to its quality. Friendly staff, good quality food, well cooked and reasonably priced is the standard here.

Ordered table over phone hours before, was sat down at requested time and served within minutes of lovely, delicious fish, chips, peas, bread and pot of tea. Service very pleasant in nice surroundings. Prefer to sit downstairs - upstairs a bit crowded on the day (local football match).

My partner and I went to steels for dinner Saturday teatime, my partner had fish he said it was nice but not the best he’d had, I had the steak pie, the meat looked like it was the end of the pie when it’s been left it was hard and dried up, the meat was quite chewy the same as the pastry, not sure if it had been microwaved but it was all very dry, the staff where friendly and efficient

This is a joyful experience walk through the door and your back in the thirties, it’s a lace in the past a pleasure before the food is even thought about. Then fish and chips pies and chips freshly cooked well cooked served by delightful ladies. Cannot rate any higher than excellent.

My fish wasn’t ordered with pea’s but all one side of my fish had what looked like peas scraped off it. which I didn’t notice till i got into my meal. The waiter was polite and she acknowledged it and offered a replacement but when you have everyone else eating then have to sit and wait for it to be remade (i have my fish skinned) so would need to wait for a fresh one. This spoils the meal together, I removed the batter from the fish and continued my meal. All i could taste was the mushy peas that I absolutely cannot stand because i had eaten some.

We were looking for a top value for money Fish and Chip Tea during over overnight stay last weekend, the queue of people outside steel corner gave us a clue that this might be a place worth a visit. We couldn't have been happier with the quality and quantity from the Jumbo Haddock which at 13.50 each including tea and bread and butter. We will be back in Cleethorpes soon and we won't look past the steel corner.....

This is one of my favourite places to go for lunch with family of friends. It holds so many happy memories of day trips to Cleethorpes, a walk along the front and fish & chips in a quaint and old fashioned fish & chip restaurant.

Very dated decor, haddock came with skin on which it did not say on the menu? Tea was already stewed beyond being nice when it came, no ice in cold drinks and what fish and chip shop doesn’t serve curry sauce??

Was looking forward to having a lovely meal here. Very dated and could do with a good scrub of tables. Had the special sharing platter which was nice but needed a few more chips. My pot of tea was lukewarm and when poured out had skum on the top so ended up with no drink. Very noisy and really can't see the attraction. Can't recommend.

the BEST fish n chips on the coast My grandparents brought me here as a youngster My dad fitted the carpets in the 80s - which I believe to still be there But the dated traditional feel only serves to make it homely traditional and friendly I now live in Brum but own a chalet on the "Fitties " So return to eat here reguarly Happy to visit alone

Nice little restaurant, went about 4pm on a thursday afternoon and got in just before the tea time rush. Sat straight down, served quickly and the food came quickly. The food was really tasty as it always is although we haven't been here for some time nothing has changed. The same lovely ladies who serve you.

On a recommendation I went here to have my food. The place has been there since 1946 don’t think the decor has changed much in the intervening Years However this creates an atmosphere of past times with the waitresses suitably attired. Had Medium lol Haddock (larger than my oval plate, chips 4 slice bread butter 2x2,pot tea, lemon mirangue pie 2 scoop ice cream for £15, All brought to table by the hardworking and delightful waitress DEBBIE,who must get through plenty shoes all the scurrying around she does.Loved it,didn’t think this type of establishment still excisted

Steele's is an old fashioned style restaurant with check table cloths, flowers on the tables and brilliant waitress service. The food is always delicious and a varied menu. There is usually a queue out the door it is so popular.

we go to steels every now and then and have never had a problem,i usually go for the medium haddock and chips with mushy peas as the jumbo is like a whale on your plate, has to be the oldest and best known fish and chip shop in the area,a bit dearer than most but you get what you pay for as the quality is superb.

The same as many others, gutted that the place is changing to a Premier Inn guests only restaurant, seriously bad move. The place is busy nearly every serving We have even been for Christmas dinner for the last 10 years or so as well as breakfasts and tea times Please rethink this ridiculous decision

We visited to commemorate my Stepfather’s 80th Birthday after he passed away in 2022. He was born in Cleethorpes and as a child looked through the windows of this hotel with his brother saying that one day they would stay here. They both lived to experience staying here, and it is now our privilege to carry on this tradition. The hotel is beautiful, traditional and spotlessly clean. We dined in the restaurant and found the food and service impeccable. We look forward to returning next year…. And every year after.

My husband and I arrived at 1250 to be greeted with “have you booked?” As passing trade but living local we hadn’t realised you had to book and we were informed by a member of staff that they were really popular so tables get booked quickly but she would take a look. We noticed two tables free both seating 4, one in the corner and one set inbetween two other tables. The member of staff informed us that the corner table we had placed our things on was booked at 1:30 but we could have the one set inbetween the other tables and the one where everyone knocked into when passing. I told her we would be done quickly anyway so not to worry. My latte came and I had drunk it before my cake arrived, my husbands’ Americano was very weak but was hot, his cheesecake was tasty all the same and my Victoria sponge equally tasty. Within 15mins a table of 6 was cleared and made available and the table that we originally had chosen was offered as a “choice of where would you like to sit” to customers who had booked. We have eaten in some lovely places and had coffee in some nice settings but have never felt as uncomfortable or unwelcome before. I would say that if passing trade isn’t welcome then put bookings only on your page would be helpful, so customers who feel It would be lovely to drop by and support a local business don’t.
