Ask for steak medium, came well done. Sent it back, it was returned saying that the chef said that the thick end was medium the rest was over cooked!!! There was about an inch of it medium. Not happy with outcome albeit the part which was medium tasted good the rest dry and overcooked. Asked for dessert menu, after 15 minutes of waiting with not a server in sight found someone to ask for the bill. Overall very disappointed with the meal and service. Won’t be hurrying back any time soon 😩😩

The atmosphere was the real winner here. The idea of having a steak restaurant in a nice rugged barn is truly fascinating and it's a wonderful experience to have. But, with that being said, I wasn't too pleased with the steaks. They didn't really differ from anything I'd cook at home. I had the 8oz fillet steak for £31.95 I expected a great wonderful steak with amazing sides but I was greeted with something that was a bit underwhelming. That's not to say it wasn't good, it was wonderful but, not really what I was looking for, for the price. There was one American girl that served us half way through the experience and she was wonderful and pleasant. The first server seemed a bit aggravated although I don't blame her as you never know what the staff could've been dealing with prior. Overall a good experience though, next time I'd order something a bit less pricey as the dish never gave as much oomphf as I'd hoped.

Great steaks which were tasty and perfectly cooked. Nice chips. Nice location and interior. Service could have been better as it felt a little disorganised at times, and people seemed to be left waiting for a long time to be seated.

Best steak and burgers in St Andrews! A little expensive when it comes to the extras like peppercorn sauce (£2.50 for a tiny container when it really ought to come with the steak) or dips but the food is absolutely fantastic and service excellent. As you are in a barn its a little cold and the benches might not be the most comfortable for some but it's really all part of the atmosphere and experience!

Smoked haddock fish cake with bearnaise sauce was super delicious, almost licked the plate. Burgers were ok, not amazing. Add on bacon was super salty which made the whole burger very salty. The burger didn’t have any sauce, onions were even not on add ons. What disappointed us was the fact that we saw other tables getting mussels that were not on the menu, when we asked a waitress about the mussels she said “we had them on the special menu yesterday, but we don’t do them today”. Although we saw a few tables enjoying mussels. Very strange. Good white house wine. Halloumi fries were ok too.

Was quite excited running across this steak house near St Andrews (Fife), and heard good things from relatives living near-by so decided to try it for myself. Great set up, atmospheric, slightly wood smoked air (but well ventilated) promised so much...... Unfortunately despite ordering the best cut (fillet) the steak was fatty and I had to trim and unfortunately chew for ages another piece. Polite staff but didn't seem overly concerned about thier steak being somewhat less quality than expected. Saying this, it was seasoned and cooked very well, just a shame about the fat. Overall worth a visit, just be aware its pricey for the quality of meat and little staff interest if you have an issue - thats my personal experience on my visit.

It was my first time eating here after hearing lots of good things about it & it certainly did not disappoint. A must for all steak lovers - the meat is well cooked, and there is a great selection of cuts. We opted for the chateaubriand. Seated in a cosy barn with big wooden tables, so you end up sharing a table with other guests but this wasn't really a problem as majority of people are there for a good feed not a private dining experience. For a group of 5 it costs us around £380 which was including a bottle of wine, our drinks during the evening & some desserts. The beer steins were a huge hit within our group and seemed to go down very well. We will definitely be back

Expected my visit to be good going by reviews but didn’t expect one of the best fillet steaks I’ve ever tasted. That guy at the charcoal grill really knows his stuff. Also the peppercorn sauce was fantastic too. Didn’t use it on the superb steak but good for the chips. Steak was expertly charred on the outside and exactly how I ordered it on the outside. Also a good range of local brews to enjoy. Greeting/waiting staff also went above and beyond with pleasant conversation. Larder is definitely worth a visit too. All in all 10/10 from me and my fellow diner. Oh also the lore lighting inside and all the wooden decor made you feel really chilled out. Can’t wait to go back. Thanks all.

Never have I experienced service so poor! Five tables seated and served after our order was taken. 1 hour and Forty minutes we waited before leaving and still not served. Cutlery was filthy and again not replaced. We were given plastic cups for our wine as it appears wine glasses are too much hassle. Do not get me wrong when I say food has been outstanding in the past but from where we sat I’m glad I didn’t see the poor hygiene practices of the kitchen staff. Tongues dropped on floor then used without cleaning and hand towels being thrown onto the grill to dispose off. I’m sure this is in contravention of environmental health practices! Will not be back as standards are nonexistent.

Visited a couple times with no issues before apart from a slight wait for our food, which I can understand when busy and made fresh. However, this experience fell short. The first issue was having to flag down a waitress to take our order, then subsequently waiting almost an hour to get our food (despite getting there early and it not being busy when we placed the order). My meal was average with hard inedible chips, nothing to rave about. However my partners £30 fillet steak arrived cold and dry accompanied by similar chips to mine. Again, flagged down a waitress to let them know the issue and was told they would make a new one, that was much appreciated. After another 15 minutes the new steak arrived which was cooked perfectly and hot like it should be. We felt like the main issue was the wait staff’s lack of attentiveness, they never once came over to check on the remade steak or if we wanted any more drinks. A very weak apology and no follow up led us to consider not coming back. It is a real shame as the chefs seem to do everything right but it is ruined by inexperienced wait staff.

What an awesome restaurant!! Staff were absolutely lovely and welcoming, they made a big impact -chefs too were friendly when saying hi to see the amazing work they are doing; you can see the whole kitchen at work and it was quite a show. Food was delicious, although the name has steak in it, we also saw delicious burgers and chicken kebabs which made ordering really difficult. Being inside a barn, we thought it would be very cold, especially at this time of the year, but it was warmer than our own home! The atmosphere was absolutely great. Staff made all the difference There are LOADS of gluten free options, such as the onion rings! Which, by the way, were delicious -not the usual greasy. I can't read this gem outside of St. Andrews any higher

The restaurant was very busy but we were seated within 30 minutes ( you can’t book a table unfortunately). We all ordered just about everything from the menu and everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. I had a fillet steak , which was cooked to perfection and chips, the chips were slightly overcooked but still good. I bought a round of drinks for 5 of us as we were the first to arrive and was delighted at the price, 4 pints and a bottle of coke was around £22, that’s something unheard of nowadays. I will certainly be back when visiting st Andrews again.

Great place to go for excellent steak. The meat is from their very own onsite butchers, so as fresh as you can get. They also serve sausages and lamb with chips, salad, onion rings, etc. The barn is what it is, so in the colder months (we went in January), it can be a bit chilly, but they do have a large heater that does bring the temp up when it's been on for a while. Overall, it's a great place to go if you're into your steaks. Unfortunately, there are no dogs allowed in the barn. Also, they only take reservations when st Andrews University graduation is on. Otherwise, you just turn up.

Prices what you'd expect for steak and it is good, the onion rings are the best I've had. But in terms of the steak the sear isn't good, and if you are a place specialising in steak you should be able to get your pan or grill hot enough to get a proper sear. It's good and the atmosphere is nice but it isn't one of the best steaks you can find.

I loved the cosy rustic barn which felt warm inside despite the miserable weather. The food was delious. I applaud Balgove with their ethical standards and wish more restaurants/farm shops would adapt these standards. I’m sorry but I simply could not give a higher score due to the poor standard of service by the staff in the barn. I’ve since read other reviews and it appears this wasn’t just a one off. The staff avoid eye contact, are slow to bring menus/drinks/food. There really is no excuse for the lack of customer service. Sort your staff out Balgove.

Previously had a great time although incredibly rude and terrible service this time. We waited over an hour for our group of six to get served, other people who had arrived after got served before us. Then after waiting ages we finally got our food and finished, waited ages once again to pay, by this time it was almost 10pm and everyone had gone including the kitchen staff because the till wasn't working. Joanne, the manager, was quite abrupt as if it was our fault the till wasn't working and didn't have £180 in cash to pay, asked us to write down our credit card details on a piece of paper because of their problem! We kindly offered to return the following day to make our payment, and being honest people we turned up and had to wait. To top it off Joanne didn't have the decency to come out for us to pay. The bill was put through IN FULL with no goodwill gesture of deduction from it, the even asked us if we wanted to pay gratuity on top! The least they could have done was knock a bit off our bill and thanked us for coming back. It has all left a bad taste in our mouths after previously nice food.

We knew you couldn’t make a reservation so we risked going Saturday night and were told approximately 40/45 min wait which was well worth it. Bar set up was a bit weird you order your drink, pay for it and then you wait to be called to collect your drink. I assume it works for them but thought it was a bit weird. The restaurant is in a barn, it was cosy and warm once inside but waiting outside for 45 mins was pretty cold. It was mega busy, big groups including lots of young kids obviously a very popular spot for locals. The wait for the food wasn’t too long and it was amazing. Food cooked to perfection. You dining in a large barn, so the atmosphere is a bit lacking, but it's also a nice change from the norm. Steaks and burgers are excellent. Cooked to perfection and tasted fantastic. Service is ok. Warning on some charges…You are charged extra for sauce for the steak - £10 (x4) for peppercorn sauce, which is a bit steep. And an eye-watering charge for a large glass of standard white wine at £13.10 – shockingly expensive.

Upon arriving at Balgove Farm Shop, to the right is a large Disneyland style faux Wild West Steak ranch barn. It is reminiscent of the sort of tat decoration you see whilst waiting in the queue at a theme park. Its screams rustic charm and homely food with the subtly of a shotgun. Curiously there are no doors into said barn, but instead a dark curtain through which you are beckoned by a sign. It is how I imagine a brothel owner might set up the entrance to a Wild West Fetish Night. Upon entering the cavernous barn, the looming darkness within (they do not believe in lighting, and energy costs are up) - means there is a degree of sensory deprivation. The senses will return when you walk into things, but hey ho, its the look they are going for and it saves money. No the set up is weird. But. The steak is actually rather good. I have to give credit where credit is due. I assume they sous vide then finish in a pan, but the meat is perfectly seasoned and cooked with real talent and flair. Hats off to the chefs, they know what they are doing. The (clearly batch cooked) chips are a little dry and often cooler than they really should be. Now we have been 3 times this year, because the steak (obviously from the farm shop is great). The starters are lacklustre and not worth your time or money. They are expensive for what they are, and clearly thrown together. However, temper your excitement of delicious steak with the knowledge you will be annoyed by the mind bendingly awful service. I have received better service in rural Congo. It is beyond bad. The staff are young all seemingly under 20 years old (presumably to save money). But there needs to be an older and more experienced manager of some sort. The staff huddle together around the till at the bar on their phones talking amongst themselves. Many patrons gave up trying to catch the staff’s eye (who were more interested in talking amongst themselves). Many (if not most) people ended walking up to the waiting staff at the till and asking them directly. This is a recurring theme. This place was not even half full when we have been there each time. On each visit we have been here in different groups, it is always the same set up. The problem is, it is a big restaurant and the staff will have to walk around asking people if they want things.. It is not great when people at the tables next to us on two occasions are actually laughing about how poor the service is. But the lack of staff experience and training really comes through with hygiene. We ordered wine. 4 glasses arrived. They were genuinely filthy. Utterly horrible. Clearly a dishwasher that needed rinse aid with scum stains and a funny smell. We politely asked for 4 clean glasses. A huff and dirty fingers stuck into the glasses to be taken away before the same ones returned a few minutes later again with thumb prints on the inside, grease and lipstick on the outside and not on a tray. Now this may seem minor, but wine is pretty cheap in the shops. If I am going to pay 6 times the purchase cost of a bottle of wine, it is reasonable to expect a clean glass. We gave up and cleaned the glasses ourselves on our shirts. Macdonalds manage clean cups...... We asked for a jug of water. Obviously this was ignored. HA! we got a few thimble sized glass. We asked for a jug and were then told by the waitress we would have to ask another waitress ourselves. I commented that this was odd. We would have ordered more food (and spent more money) had there been anyone at all proximate or interested in taking an order! Working in a restaurant is tough. I do get that, I’ve done it. It is even more tough if you employ young people and no one is experienced or managing. People whine about rubbish, but guys, don’t huddle and gossip with your backs to the room and playing on your phones. Clean glassware and crockery is a basic and reasonable expectation, and when people come in, it is nice to ask them if you can get them a drink or anything when they arrive. Good meat. Awful service, hope it gets better.

Perhaps the worst service I have ever experienced in my life. We were a group of five and ordered starters and main courses. Firstly, they all came together which was not noted on the menu and highly inconvenient. I had ordered a steak and asked for no pepper and on first inspection this seemed to have been catered for. However after one bite all I could taste was pepper so I flipped the steak over to reveal the entire reverse side covered in pepper. Clearly the kitchen had missed this on my order and tried to hide their mistake. A deceptive choice, particularly if I were allergic to pepper. I complained and it took fifteen minutes for a waitress to come back and respond with, ‘it’s really busy so the kitchen must have seen your request but forgot and served it anyway. Can you eat around the pepper?’ By this point the steak was stone cold so I asked for a replacement. Another 15 minutes went by and we asked on the status only for the waitress not to return. When my friends had finished their meals and a waitress came to clean their plates, I asked again where my meal was. The waitress returned and said the kitchen had forgotten and asked would I still like it. No apology was given. I finally got my meal fifteen minutes later and had the pleasure of eating it while all my friends had finished their meals. I can safely say it was not worth the effort and time taken to acquire it: the new steak was much smaller, thinner and looked like it was just slapped onto the board. When it came to pay I expected some sort of apology and recompense for such awful service however neither of these were given. Unsurprising now since the whole experience was marred by incompetence. When I brought this up, I wad told it was company policy to not refund steaks and the best they could do was take off my starter. How amiable. Avoid this place: complete and utter farce.

It cooks and serves steak... no, it cooks and serves well cooked, great tasting, juicy, delicious steaks. Salad that came with the steak was a bit of a letdown, it was a couple leafs of lettuce. No biggie really as it was all about the meat for me

We had a lovely lunch here on a Saturday. There was no queue and the food was delicious. We had calamari, burgers, steak and kids sausages and all were tasty! We loved the chips. My dad said it was the best burger he had eaten in a long time and he is hard to please so that’s a big compliment. This was our 3rd visit and we will definitely be back.

This trip was so disappointing for us as a family. The wait wasn’t too long to get in this time and the bar staff were lovely, however service inside was very poor and the standard of cleanliness and quality of food was poor. The tables were dirty, the condiments were empty, the wasps flying around (always there to be fair) However my biggest complaint was the chips and wet lettuce served with the steaks…..I can’t actually describe how poor the chips were??? Even the worst chippy I’ve been to wouldn’t give these out and the wet, limp, pale green lettuce - nothing else, no tomato, no mushroom - just lettuce!! When they have a huge variety for sale in the farm shop attached!! I’m afraid we won’t be back as a family and I really wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else. It is just not worth the money -£180 for a family of 4 and we were all disappointed.

Great place to visit for a very tasty steak, excellent service, very friendly and welcoming staff in a really unique place. The access road is diabolical, the loose gravel surface might suit tractors.

A really great steak place if you like big, juicy steaks and fries (chips). It's set in a rustic barn. No windows, but doesn't matter when you're enjoying good food. Best to go early as it does get busy. The bone in ribeye was cooked exactly as asked.

Food was amazing, our party had steaks, kebabs plus various desserts/ sides, prices as you'd expect for St. Andrews but let down by very slow service. Be aware no bookings, a long wait to get in for some. We arrived at 4pm before the queues which worked well in our favour.

It used to be good, but now they are not able to deliver the food you order right. I ordered the Cobb salad and a burger with UberEats and the fried egg was missing from the salad, I submitted a complaint and got no response. This evening my partner ordered the same with Just Eat, asked for no bacon in the salad, as I cannot eat it, and an extra crispy chicken patty. The salad was full of bacon and no crispy chicken was delivered. Is it that difficult to make a salad right??

Lovely bar/restaurant. Service let it down. We went in only for drinks & was placed at a table across from the bar. But felt invisible, took quite a while for our drinks order to be taken and then even longer for them to arrive. I had to go to the twice to ask for service. Would go back but was quite disheartened by the experience. The waitresses were all polite.
