Starting Gate in Nottingham

Excellent service and great food

I have been here several times now mainly on a Monday night as I work in Nottingham on a late shift. I come here for the amazingly good food and good company of the staff who are all very friendly and helpful. I sleep over in my camper van on the car park and have had many good nights sleep while here. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a one night stop over.

My wife & I have just had a lovely meal in the Starting Gate and it was absolutely beautiful, the staff are very nice and courteous always polite and answering any questions regarding the menu. I had book my table online earlier last week and only had a phone call the day before about pre booking our meals but was lead to believe that it was only for Sunday dinners. We were ordering from the grill meau which I was told that that was fine so thought I could be able to order a steak or ribs from the menu. When we arrived we chose from the menu and then when we went to order was told there there was no steaks or ribs or anything because they had ran out and this was not what I was lead to believe. This was not made clear on the phone the day before and the lady in the till said we should have pre booked because we were a big party, but again this was not made clear. We left because we were so disappointed as it was my Son’s birthday and he was so upset. We won’t be returning!!!!!!!!!.

We come here to eat and drink regularly and it’s always amazing food!! Chef’s are good, bar staff are warm and inviting. Well recommended

Stayed here in our motorhome for two nights and caught the bus into Nottingham. We ate in the pub both evenings, food was delicious, excellent value for money and the staff were very friendly. Would definitely recommend, thank you for letting us stay.

The starting gate is a very welcoming and friendly pub . Karaoke nights have been really good and we will be back to enjoy a meal and a few drinks really soon

We regularly come here for food and drinks. The front of house staff can’t do enough for you, and they keep the pub really clean and tidy. The kitchen deliver great food for the cost. If you have allergies, speak to the staff. They have a wide range of meals to accommodate. On the odd occasion they’ve sold out of a meal I fancy, they’re amazing at recommending alternatives. It’s part of the greenking chain, but it feels like an independent pub. Purely down to how they all make you feel welcomed. Ps. The pub quiz is a great night out. (Wednesday) Plenty of prizes to be won and the questions are varied

Very disappointed yesterday when we went for lunch it was a disaster from start to finish. Most tables reserved what tables weren't had dirty pots and glasses still on them. People waiting to be served no one serving, when finally got served some products not available including food, the food was over cooked and partly wrong which could of been rectified if the order had been read back to me. The drinks weren't served in the correct glasses as they hadn't been washed as far as I was aware there was 3 staff on that clearly did not take their job seriously. When we left within the hour of getting there the tables that had pots and glasses on had just started being cleared after mentioning that if the glasses had been cleared I may of got my drink in the correct glass.

Thank you to all the team at the gate . We had a great Christmas dinner there the staff were like rockets ,everything ran like clockwork. It was lovely to not have to cook . All the food was piping hot and delicious. We visited tonight and my husband had macaroni cheese I had bacon and cheeseburger with fries . Absolutely gorgeous. Thanks again to you all . Will be back for the quiz on Wednesday.

The food was ok but didn't stay too long as it was really cold in there on the day of our visit . Obviously, they had some sort of heating issue as there were several small electric heaters dotted about.

Friendly welcome and very good value for money food. We stayed one night in the parking lot: very convenient place.

really great stay in our campervans at the starting gate - we had lovely food and great service and was able to get a bus right outside into the city! no charge to stay but we did buy food thank you all. animal friendly too

Went there for food today. The waitress did say there was an hour wait for food and offered to refund the drinks we ordered. But we wanted to stay for a drink we ordered 2 cokes and a dr pepper. All came out had clearly too much syrup tasted extremely off. Didn't even finished the drinks was there for 5 mins tops went down the road instead. Would not go again it's not the first time we have had issues here

We stayed over for the weekend in our motorhome. Friday night we enjoyed karaoke with the locals and a large Christmas party group. Saturday we had tea after a lovely day at the Christmas market. Food was good, staff were friendly and attentive. Great spot for a weekend, quiet area in the car park, close to good public transport routes and we couldn't fault the pubs service and atmosphere.

We went today for breakfast with Santa and not only did our daughter have a brilliant time so did the adults. The Atmosphere was lovely all the children played together, Mrs Clause and her little elf were great and Santa took the time to talk to all the children without rushing them. The food was lovely definitely got more for your money and was hot, all plates were empty. Thank you Starting gate for a lovely morning.

We spent two nights here in our motorhome. The staff are really friendly and the food lovely and good value. Just a short bus ride into the city.

Stayed here for one night in our motorhome while visiting friends in Nottingham. Just what you need, with good honest food at a really good price, and very nice staff that were very welcoming and friendly.

Great staff, great food at a very reasonable price. Free motor home stopover close to Nottingham and a nearby bus stop. Update from our last visit. Sadly there were a number of people,probably regulars, sat at the bar vaping which as we all know is illegal and the staff did nothing to prevent them.

Great value food and drink in a nice environment. Excellent motorhome stop for central Nottingham, has a large flat and safe car park. Quiet at night. Short bus ride into town. Winner

Attend on a Wednesday night for a quick bite and a pint before attending local sporting venue. Food has been great each time and when busy you can order via the app so you don't have to leave your seat. Wednesday night is also quiz night so one day soon we will have to stay and play.

Over from Ireland and came here to starting gate and i have to say it is a brilliant spot to go for food and drinks, loved the staff very polite and great people working for them. Definitely be back when come over again.

stayed in our motorhome for two nights, this isn’t the first time we have used The Starting Gate as a stopover and it won’t be the last. The food is reasonably priced and of a good standard, lots of choices, we had the sharing platter which was great, especially the Mac n cheese, there are also Mon-Fri deals on food. We have used the pub as a stopover for visiting the racecourse which is just down the road and for football. The staff are all really friendly and welcoming. We look forward to our next stopover.

Service was great and the food was hot and delicious. Just half way round our walk brilliant stop, highly recommend if your in the area.

Great motorhome stopover spot. Was meeting brother in law for night out in Nottingham. Easy 15 minute bus trip from stop outside. Had a big huge meal at the pub before heading out. Good food, good prices. Taxi back from city was only £8 for two of us. Good space, parking in space at the back. Very good quite nights sleep. Decided to spend extra night to ride out the storm before heading north. Recommend, safe with CCTV.

Great place to stay overnight with a motorhome, really friendly staff, had some lunch before going in to Nottingham for a concert. Would highly recommend.

Fabulous. A warm welcome given. The staff are lovely. Food...beautiful. Prices are really good. The atmosphere in the is very friendly. I will definitely go back. My D.I.L had the steak and ale pie. It was like a desperate Dan size pie. The gammon was lovely. My granddaughters had meals from the kids menu. Perfect sized meals. Thank you everyone. X

An amazing welcome , after travelling for 9 hours from Cornwall to Nottingham, in the rain. Very friendly & helpful. Treated with such kindness- outstanding service ! Lovely meal , good value , 80's music play list, cozy pub. Tina even gave our 2 therapy labs some left over sausages . Her colleague was very kind, too. Definitely recommend this stopover. Lovely Park & walks nearby.

Nice clean bar and restaurant with friendly attentive staff, quick service of quality food once ordered. The food was cooked well and piping hot on arrival. Good portion sizes and it actually looked like the pictures in the menu👍

We called in on our way home after racing at the water sports centre as we were all hungry and needed food. They managed to get us a table sorted which was good. We ordered our food independently as families, 4 orders but when the meals came out each order bar one was missing a meal. The meals we did receive were just average and the portions were small. I went to the bar and asked for a refund for ours as one of the meals hadn’t arrived 10 minutes after two of us had finished eating. The dragon like barmaid was so rude and surly towards me that it was disgusting. There is no place for customer service like that. She said NO yep in capitals to my request for a refund. Anyway at this point they brought food out for my son but it was the wrong order! Some 25 minutes after we had finished he finally got his meal. After approaching the manager about the poor service quality and attitude of the bar dragon he did refund us for the most expensive meal which is the least he should have done. Yes we all ate our food but we hadn’t eaten all day so would have eaten a cardboard box we were so hungry. Next time I’d drive the 130 miles home starving rather than go here.

Cozy pub, well-kept inside. The staff are friendly, in a good mood and helpful. Average food, pleasant without pretensions. A little care of the outside would certainly make the place more attractive. Campers welcome with the possibility of overnight parking in the car park.

We stayed here in our motorhome for 2 nights a month ago - staff were very accommodating and the food was really good - highly recommend this Pub for an overnight stop and for drinks/food - close to city centre - bus stop very handy and good walking in the area - thankyoh for letting us stay.

We stayed with our camper for one night. We ate cheaply and very tasty. We were even entertained (quizzes and card bingo). We can definitely recommend it. 🙂

Fantastic place for food/drinks etc and even let us park overnight with the vw campervan. Staff were all lovely and kept the place clean and tidy. Also it’s a dog friendly pub too ( even tho we don’t have one 😊)

Arrived late with our camper and were allowed to stay overnight for free. The staff are very friendly and the menu is good. Only had 2 drinks which were very tasty.

We were here with the motorhome to spend the night, we had a beer, very clean, good atmosphere, terrace outside, large space, very friendly staff and fast service, it is recommended, here you can park and then take the bus to the center of the city. city, very well connected.

Leuke gemoedelijke sfeer, lekker eten en drinken. Tevens makkelijk berijkbaar, zelfs met de camper. Ook prima parkeren met de camper op de ruime parkeerplaats

Arrived on a Sunday evening and had 3 main meals and drinks. Service was friendly and fast, we all enjoyed our food. We could take our dog, who had cuddles from staff too! Great value for us as we also stayed for free overnight in our motorhome. Fantastic walks right next door to the Starting Gate, lovely wooded areas and lakes to walk round. Close enough to main roads to be easily accessible but quiet enough overnight to rest. If we're that way again we'll definitely be back!

We are a couple of Portuguese nationality, we were traveling in a motorhome, we stopped at the Starting Gate for lunch, very good typical English food, very friendly people and a very good park for the motorhome and overnight stay, we recommend it. Thank you and see you next time.

Little bit of a wait for food but they were busy. When it came out though the food was really good and great value for money. Would recommend.

I would say "Never judge a book by it's cover" The first impression as you drive in is a little disappointing , it doesn't look the most attractive building and when we went the grass wasn't cut so it looked a little scruffy.. However... The inside is smart , clean and the staff very friendly and very efficient. The food was absolutely great value and the drinks were competitive. We would certainly be back especially as they are dog friendly.

We stayed here in our motorhome for the night in their large car park having read many good reviews within the motorhome community. The staff were lovely and could not be more welcoming. We both had a meal which excellent, steak and chips with a few excellent and well priced beers, what's not to like! Would definitely return.

Booked a table for 5 at 5 o clock got there at 4.45 table ready brilliant but then 3 off use wanted xl mix grill but was not available 1 wanted mac & Cheese not available latte came out like cup of milk no taste of coffee then after an hour waiting we was told our food was being cooked now and then ordered Cheesecake that came out warm because thay defrost it in microwave so not very good at all especially for a bank holiday

We have been here twice now in our 7m motorhome and the value for money is superb. The food is your traditional fayre but we enjoyed our small mixed grills one night and the two for £11.99 meal deal which in our case was small fish, chips and mushy peas & a hunters chicken, chips and garden peas. The latter suited our appetites but bigger eaters may want a starter or pudding. In terms of motor caravans etc, we found parking at the furthest end away from the road best for sleeping. There are no facilities outside pub hours so you need to be self sufficient. It is a requirement that you have food and a drink to offset free parking. This is a great stopover en route elsewhere or to catch the bus into Nottingham.
