No longer dog friendly (or disability friendly)! I'm really bummed to be writing this review as just three months ago I gave a glowing 5 star review but unfortunately I wasn't able to give feedback on the phone comfortably and don't feel the venue is dog friendly. I was looking forward to taking my uncle and partner for a meal and was told on the phone dogs are no longer allowed on chairs based on feedback from some customers. My dog is 3kg and a NHS registered support animal who always sits on a chair beside me so I was quite taken aback. I tried saying that she would sit on a blanket but that's not ok... After thinking about it I cancelled the booking and tried to explain why- maybe it was busy because I felt cut off and my mental health conditions and c-ptsd were triggered by the conversation. Knowing the venue and how many dogs go, I hope they rethink this. The space is big enough as well to have two areas even where the restaurant-y bit is maybe no dogs and the bar and side areas are dog friendly- that would be understandable and great! But end of the day as it stands unfortunately one of my favourite pubs is no longer somewhere I can go with my support animal which is a shame. The women on the phone I do believe likes dogs and is nice- great when I've been there ! But unfortunately the wrong message was sent today and I will not be returning until I can feel comfortable and that my rights to a support animal are respected. I will be honest and say I think I forgot to mention she was a support animal but the whole tone of the call was triggering and made me anxious as soon as my dog was mentioned. Once again maybe it was busy but I still feel really rough disappointed especially as when I tried to explain and feedback why I cancelled I was cut off multiple times- once again very triggering for my condition.

Really friendly and attentive staff, delicious food that's served promptly, great allergen menu so I felt safe eating there. The duck hash was just as good as I remembered. Lovely decor, spacious and clean. Dog friendly and it had lovely warm cosy vibes. Plenty of TV screens showing sport if that's what you're there for, a good mix of clientele. Spacious beer garden at the back too. Lots of interesting specials on the menu. Would really recommend!

Been here a couple of times for drinks only but last night we had a meal which was excellent. Menu is pub classics but with a bit of a twist. I had steak pie and chips, my wife sausage and mash, both were great. Very good friendly service. Pub is set up for watching sport so I expect it could be very busy when watching six nations rugby for example. Great selection of beer and wine. If eating I would recommend booking online to be sure of getting a table. Only downside is parking, only 4 spaces outside otherwise on road parking up a steep hill. All good, recommended, going back again in a couple of days.

Very traditional and sprawling pub. We came for a euro cup match, so perhaps it's different other times, but it was buzzing. Lots of loud people cheering. Impatient bar staff, who you could barely hear or them hear you over the din and seemed to get annoyed at you if you didn't scream at them. The food was... interesting. Nothing to write home about. Just typical pub fare. Except the so-called Eton Mess. It was like a plate of pink vomit? It tasted fine, but the texture and consistency were unappealing. And on a plate? I'm sorry. It was really unappealing. And they really kept rushing me to finish the food because the cook was going home? Okay, and? So, give me a takeaway box and let me keep eating. I've never been so pressed to finish eating, especially at a pub that is going to be open for hours yet. Eventually, I just told them to throw it out then. I wasn't done eating but I was sick of them constantly pestering me to finish my food. It was just weird. We were all still ordering drinks and watching the match which still had so much time left, so it was pretty irritating to be rushed like that. The servers were all very nice though other than that. Cider was good.

Service a bit slow but they're busy. So many dogs inside! Amazing. Food is delicious. Edit: A year or so later I just want to emphasize the fact that I've discussed this place repeatedly both with friends from the UK and friends visiting the UK. Specifically how amazing a dog-friendly bar is, but also my main memory is bringing my mom back here on our last day in the city and some gigantic four legged cloud named George came barreling up to us like HELLO WELCOME TO STARBANK and the staff was like omg sorry about George and I was like ?????? The food was good but George was the star. Literally this place has left immaculate vibes on my soul.

Sunday lunch with some of the family. Dishes are always cooked perfectly. Had the steak & ale pie today with a beef dripping gravy, mash & hishi cabbage. Although not on the starkbanks menu, a greene king favourite of ours is the roast chicken or beef yorkshire pudding wraps, which tastes out of this world We found this dish at another greene king, The Olde Rooms in Weymouth, Dorset. After my main, I chose the sticky toffee pudding with custard and a soft drink. I have also ordered the salt & pepper squid starter before and recommend. The Starbank Inn sells blue label non alcohol lagers in bottles for those who, like me, have made the choice to no longer drink alcohol but have no problems sitting in the company with others at our table that do and having something similiar. It's always a delight dining at the Starbank Inn.

I've changed my mind about the Starbank. I first thought it was the poorer cousin of the nearby Old Chain Pier. I was wrong. Starbank is rich in atmosphere, dogs and friendly staff. Sure, it looks busy when you walk in... and it probably will be because a nice pub like this is popular. I go around the corner to the table service area. It's often more quiet although you do need to eat. It's a Bellhaven pub, so you might already know the menu, but until you try it you can't know how well the kitchens here do at making it tasty. The burger and pint deal is my favourite. I mentioned the dogs, right? This is a doggo pub. I'm disappointed if there isn't a cute fuffball to distract me.

So as my son was celebrating his 12th birthday we decided to go to this pub for a meal and watch the England vs Switzerland match over the weekend . We was asked have we booked a table . As we didn't we was worried. Anyway the manager asked are you dining with us tonight we said yes please . She asked are we drinking alcohol and did we want to watch the football we again said yes please . She seated us and our orders taken . Not a problem. As my son finished his meal the manager said she couldn't serve us alcohol anymore as our child had stopped eating . So we ordered desert and got served from another member of staff . The manger then came back over and asked us about the drinks . We said another staff member served us as my son had ordered desert . She wasn't happy . Couple of minutes just before my son had finished his desert the manager harassed us with questions about when are we leaving, have we finished our drinks . Even tho clearly you could see we still had our drinks full on the table . 40 minutes into the first half she comes over again without asking picks up my son coca cola drink sticks her nose inside the glass and sniffs it . My family was in shock . Never witnessed anything in my life . She just says just checking. Didn't know what to say to her . Absolutely shocking behaviour from a owner of a public house . Never going again and warn people if you have kids do not visit for a meal 😡😡😡

Disappointing to enter a busy local & regular boozer, in the early evening on Easter Day with friends, to receive no welcome from staff behind the bar, most of whom were grouped by the coffee machine, looking as though they really didn’t want to interact with customers. The service when it came from Tony and then Adam was helpful and efficient. Natalie as ever was warm and welcoming when floor walking. Sometimes this place is great, other times really not.

We were passing the Starbank Inn on the way back from a nice family easter walk. The kids were thirsty so we thought this place looks nice, lets pop in. They have a very small sign around foot level as you walk in the door which says something along the lines of "children only allowed in for dining and not just drinks". I thought that's fine we'll order some food. We ordered some drinks, a kids meal and a couple of portions of chips. The waitress didn't say anything after our order, just walked away which we found strange. She returned a few minutes later saying they'll let it slide on this occasion but in future the adults MUST order a main meal or we cannot have kids in. This seems completely over the top and it should state on the sign at the entrance that an adult MUST purchase a main meal in order to allow children in. It's a shame that they discriminate against families with kids in this way as it seems a nice pub/restaurant and would have been somewhere we would be likely to visit more regularly. Looks like the old chain pier will be a better option for us in the future.

There is a great buzz when live sports events are on. Often there is a raffle for charity and a free pie at half time! It is a popular, dog-friendly venue. There are some benches out front next to the park, and also a small beer garden to the rear. There is a disabled toilet and a wheelchair accessible entrance to the side of the building.

I had been in the bar on a midweek afternoon and checked the poster to see what live sport would be shown as I had wanted to watch the Celtic v Livingston Scottish Cup quarter-final on Sunday 10/3/24. This match was listed. When I entered the bar I noticed that none of the screens were showing this game. When I asked if the TVs would be turned over at the final whistle of the English football match the response was "Aye, obviously". Therefore I expected to still be able to see 70 minutes of the game. When I mentioned to another member of staff that advised me I could sit at a table briefly even though it had a reservation sign on it, I asked "Will I be able to stay until the end of the game at 4.15?" I was then asked which game I was looking to see. When I responded "Celtic v Livingston" I was advised that this game would not be shown as previous experience had shown that rugby and English football were far more popular than Scottish football (other than games involving Hearts and Hibs). I pointed out that I had checked in advance that the game would be shown and had travelled specifically to watch the game as I support Livingston. I did receive an apology from one member of staff; however, another staff member said "You should have gone to the game in person" (or words to that effect). Furthermore, when I ordered a coffee as I was looking for something non-alcoholic, a staff member made a comment about going to a pub and ordering coffee. I am extremely disappointed that the advertised sporting fixture was not shown (if the posters are sent in pre-printed, then a marker pen or some correcting fluid could easily be used to make any changes). The response of "Aye, obviously" (which turned out to be wrong) was uncalled for: "Yes" would have been a far more polite response if it had been true. I do not believe the staff should be making any judgements about what people drink or instructing people to spend their money on train and match tickets rather than in their pub. To be fair, my experience on this occasion was not typical and was perhaps influenced by the staff being under stress due to being exceptionally busy with Mother's Day and custom for the sports events that were being shown. When I have been here at quieter times I have received good service and been able to see my choice of sport.

Nice little cafe just opposite the cathedral on the royal mile. A tad pricey but a nice little find for a quick coffee and bite to eat whilst exploring.

I wanted to love this Indian street food spot, it had a cool vibe, smelled great, laid back and great soundtrack. But the food was tasteless. First, while they promote the Bombay sapphire gin, they simply won’t make their also advertised gin martini out of it, even for an up-charge. I rolled and took their version which was a citrusy lime affair, when everyone who matters knows gin martinis are meant to be served dirty and with olives. Maybe that’s the New York girl in me, but moving on, the Papadam had not an ounce of cumin, seed or powder, just puffed dough. Similarly, the Haka noodles were mush and honestly tasted like nothing except maybe vinegar. Maybe the mains are better, but I’d try your luck elsewhere. My 3 purchased items are all going back mostly untouched.
