One of our regular places to go for dinner. A wide selection of food, a nice setting and generally very good. We will be back.

Went here for lunch, had the chilli beef nachos and baked potato with prawn Marie. Probably one of the best nachos I've had , very good and reasonably priced , baked potato also good, polite service , give it a go .

What can I say, over priced menu. FROZEN VEGTABLES!! Quality of food poor for the price. No need for frozen veg these days. Service ok, restuarant could be cleaner. Will not be back.

Scottish pan riders annual dinner. All good no complaints, recommended.

Food was good however they had run out of a good few options unfortunately. Service was good but a little hard to get a drink mod meal. Otherwise a decent place and would go back. Cheers

Great place to go for a meal. Good menu for vegaterians, not skimpy on the portions either. Dog friendly and our Huskies always got a great welcome. Friendly staff.

We have been to the steading a number of times in the past few years and the quality, quantity and freshness of the food has always impressed. The staff are polite, jovial and nothing is a problem for them. This is a little gem of a place and well worth a visit. If you havnt been here you are certainly missing out on a good eating experience

So terribly sad. This was a great place for dinner but not now. My friend called the prawn cocktail ‘prawn mess’, my salmon sat in 4mm of oil so totally inedible and the crumble was not mixed so full of lumps of fat. The vegetables with the lamb were either from a tin or frozen and the coffee burnt. So sorry, we will never go back.

Great tasting food and presented really well, staff really friendly and helpful, fairly priced food great portions. Only downside and not even much of one was the tables were small especially for the size of the plates. Definitely a well earned 4.8/5

The food was OK. The chicken was cooked perfectly but the veg that came with it was obvs frozen out of a bag and microwaved to within an inch of its life which was disappointing.

Lovely staff!! Food is really good and made well and the atmosphere is cosy and welcoming. I’ve been to the steading a few times and it’s always been good, would definitely recommend:)

Called half an hour before attending and we were lucky enough to get a table, told to order at bar as restaurant was fully booked, no problems, food served quickly, good service and fresh food, no complaints EVER about the food at the steading everything myself or family have ordered have been lovely, always recommend to people when asking where to go for a meal with loads of choice on the menu, the fish and nachos are amazing!! you won’t be disappointed!..until the next visit

Would not recommend when we arrived there were menus on the table then the waitress removed them and replaced them with a peice of paper with 3 starters 3 main meals. and 3 deserts no prices no kids menu and no vegan food on the menu/paper not what you would expect from a restaurant

Outstanding fish and chips. Best I have tasted in Edinburgh. Prompt friendly service and fires in the pub too. Highly recommended

We decided to eat here after attending an appointment in Edinburgh. We weren't disappointed. The restaurant was booked up but they still managed to find us a table near the bar where we could eat. There were 4 of us and all enjoyed the food very much. We had a starter and a main meal. All of the food was amazingly presented, tasted freshly prepared and everyone loved their meals. The staff were friendly, helpful and our experience was a positive one. In a climate where everyone has had to put up their prices and lower amount, it can be hard to find somewhere where you get value for money. They don't disappoint with portion size and prices which are of high standard and more than fair. They source local products in their meals too which just enhances their food and I would very much recommend this restaurant and bar to anyone in the area! We will certainly be coming back here and recommend booking just to make sure you get a table. I'm not surprised it was very busy!!

Met with a friend for lunch. We hadn't booked and place was really busy. Luckily the manager found us a table..thank you. Food was served very quickly and we had the Steak pie. Decent portions and nicely cooked. Nice atmosphere to. 😀😀😀😀😀

Arrived for morning breakfast, first in the door, and was greeted by a tall male member of staff who needs to have a look at his attitude. Everything was made out to be such a hardship for him. Tea and coffee may as well be thrown on the table, Food was OK, but when went to pay the bill, he stated, " Don't come back tomorrow, we'll be busy." Don't worry, I won't be back in a hurry.

This is the best restaurant. i have never had any bad experiences. their food always top class service always friendly prices good i have been going there for years and will continue for many more i cant believe half off these reviews as this is definitely not the restaurant i know always would recommend this place to family and friends top class for everyone who is involved in this restaurant

Christmas dinner here, a big thing for a family of 20. Good was great ,portions massive. Service was very good Will definitely be back

Fabulous steak and ale pie. Lovely tender beef and scrummy pastry. Haggis side dish very tasty, although slightly over-peppery for delicate taste buds.

We used to use the Steading as our go to restaurant but had really, really bad service about a year ago so didn’t go back. Decided very recently to give it another chance and wished I hadn’t bothered. The young staff work like dogs but the more experienced staff are downright rude. I honestly thought I had done something to annoy them by being there. We left and will not go back.

This restaurant used to be our favourite when we lived in Edinburgh a few years ago. Today, my family and I had dinner there again, and were extremely disappointed with the whole trip. The food was bland and overpriced, the ambience, non existent. Its sad when a much loved place disappoints like this. Absolutely not recommended.

Nice quality and great value. It's the relaxed but atmospheric experience that keeps us coming back. I always have the salmon or steak, and my partner and mom always have fish and chips. The fish and chips is some of the best in the wider Lothians region!

First visit. Came for Christmas lunch but decided to have the burger. Very enjoyable and would definitely go back.

A little bit slow in between courses. It was very busy.

Having been a regular of The Steading for many years, we have noticed it steadily going downhill and after lunch today we won’t be back! One main course had to be returned after it was served with an ingredient that we asked to be removed (the server seemed annoyed at the inconvenience and there was no apology for the mistake) the other main course (macaroni cheese) was tasteless and only a quarter was eaten, the staff seemed disinterested and didn’t enquire as to how our meal was! Unfortunately today was the last time we will eat there, such a shame as it used to be such a lovely place to go!

Having heard mixed reviews, I was totally delighted with the food and service I received. I ordered a main and desert steak pie and cheese cake, and the only thing I felt I would have complained about was my gin being served in a normal glass not a gin glass otherwise a good night was had.

Well spread menu for all tastes

Four of us ex work colleagues meet up every few months for a meal and decided on this eatery this time. Mistake!!!! Positives: Waiting staff were friendly enough although it took a while to get drinks and order food. The ice cream was good and one of the party had steak pie and she said it was one of the best she has had. Now for the negatives: Car park was a bit of a mess, cars were parked everywhere at every angle so had to park on the main road which wasn't ideal. It was cold inside so we had to put our scarves back on. The food was just OK, definitely not the wow factor. When this was booked it was for five people and had to pay £10 deposit each. Fair enough! The person who took the booking didn't seem to have had training to handle this. One of our party had to cancel through illness so when we eventually got the bill they had only deducted £40 and not £50. When queried they said because someone had not turned up they keep their £10 deposit ....... seriously, how cheeky is that? So people beware! The karaoke was so loud, you couldnt even talk above it. did they think they were in the SEC, they were in a smallish room in a restaurant. So surprise, surprise, we didn't leave a tip ..... they already had one of £10. Would we return .... no, would we recommend .... no.

I really enjoyed my steak here. Cooked and presented beautifully The staff were attentive. The atmosphere was nice. Book in advance.

Me and my partner went here for a bite to eat. The staff from the waiters to the bar staff was amazing. The service was quality. Really made us feel welcome and also introduced us to a new cocktail that we will be taking home with us. Thank you so much have a lovely Christmas.

Always our favourite place to come when we have a child free day, we always have the macaroni and hunters chicken and it is always amazing! This time I had lentil soup as well and it was so good!

Very busy but got a table near the bar, ordered at the bar then placed our order. Nice menu had the fish and chips and salad also beef lasagne with garlic bread. Served quickly and the food was very tasty nice portions fish tasted very fresh lightly battered excellent fresh salad with loads of dressing. Lasagna was made not frozen with loads of mozzarella cheese, lovely. Told some of our friends and family. Recommend

Planned a party for my parents 80th birthdays at the Steading. Living in England it was a challenge to plan the party for a visit to Edinburgh for 23 of us but the management at the Steading made it so easy. Answering every email I sent straight away and never tiring of answering my questions, of which there was a lot as I wanted everything to be perfect. Which it was. On the day we had the conservatory to ourselves and the staff and service was absolutely top notch. Couldn’t have been more helpful. The food was delicious and there was no pressure on us for any timescales. All in all a brilliant memorable day for my parents thanks to the care and professionalism of all at The Steading. We wouldn’t hesitate in visiting again and organising future parties here.

We were in a party of fifteen for a birthday meal seated in the conservatory. The food and service were spot on considering the size of our group. Food was tasty and hot, the staff were very good and my wife and I had a very good time. Thank you.

Service was first class and the food even better. Rarely do you find a restaurant that has both and especially one that offers great value into the bargain. An absolute gem!

Good pub food and good friendly service, was busy even in midweek so just managed to park. The fish was fresh and huge. Also good 0% alcohol Erdinger bottled beer.

Asked for two veggie breakfasts, got two Scottish breakfasts, no check back given to make sure everything was okay. Luckily we aren’t vegetarian, just ate what we were given as it took a while to come out and we were hungry. When told about the mistake waitress advised “it’s going to be one of those days”. Not overly impressed to be honest. Surname was also wrong on the booking.

After a Pentlands walk it was lovely to relax and have a good meal here. Thoroughly recommend!

You're tired after hiking all day, you want some beer and food, that's one of your few options around there and trust me - it is exactly what you want. Family atmosphere, good food, reasonable prices and booze that will feel more than 5 stars once you're exhausted. We were reaching this place so knackered it felt like holy site.

I've always liked The Steading. It's a comforting place to dine after a lengthy walk in the Pentlands or a days skiing at Hillend. The service was great, the staff friendly and informed. The food was delicious and plentiful and the prices very reasonable. However the place is looking tired. It's tough for business following the covid crisis but I think a freshen up would help. Definitely worth a visit.

Splendid food with excellent service, great for a casual meal. Large portions so be warned. We had a large haddock and chips when a small would have sufficed.

Fantastic pub, with great staff and amazing food. The Steading does huge portions of food at really good prices. It has a really country pub feel, it's dog friendly and in the winter there is a lovely fireplace. It's always busy! I recommend booking for lunchtimes but there is a bar area which is first come first serve that is usually possible to get space at. Starter, main and a drink is approx £25 To £30 a head.

First visit - service and food was good, Decent pub food, standard prices. Good location, plenty of parking. Would recommend.

When in tonight for a meal as I thought I'd treat myself as I live in a van in Edinburgh and went in and got a curry and chips and at £21 pound I thought .mmm....good good good ...well when it came it was like soup and the meat was warm not hot and the amount of wee hards chips was unreal....so il not be treating myself in there again ...eat half and left as was not up for conflict ...would not go back ...

We choose this place here for good grub before/ after a hike and it has never disappointed. Always excellent haggis and english breakfasts. Bar and wait staff are all friendly and nice people. Love having this as a local!

Lunched here twice recently. Better than average pub grub and normally has Timothy Taylor Landlord on draught which is very much a bonus. We'll be back. Many of the pubs which had the best reputation twenty years ago have really gone so far downhill that I now avoid them. If anything this place has improved. It's often quite busy.

Great food , great service. Stopped by after hiking. Quickly fed and friendly staff. Awesome fajitas served here. Could maybe provide a couple more tortillas with the meal.

Lovely food... had starters- nachos and brie. Both very well presented and tasty. Main courses vegetarian fajitas and hunter chicken...again very tasty and well presented. Small loss of stars due to having to pay extra for cheese and jalapeños for fajitas at 1.50 per portion for about 20p worth of both (small plastic tub).... most other restaurants include them as standard (hubby a chef so he was a bit shocked at that). Also crammed into a table at a door, plus no-one spoke to us to check how meal was at all until we had finished... although very polite when taking order and giving bill. Also random dog barking outside for the whole of main course...although I actually appreciate it not being allowed in, as hubby very allergic to animal dander so not a complaint...just a slight annoyance. Able to park close by which was great. The lights on wall had cobwebs on them so maybe just wee bit more attention needs to be given to cleaning. All in all, a lovely meal, fresh and well presented... just a few tweaks needed to get full marks. I'd give this a strong 8.5 out of 10... good job.

Went with my family. The portions are large. But thoroughly enjoyable. Could not manage a sweet, although they looked wonderful.
