Treacle Bar and Kitchen in Edinburgh, City of

I wanted to love this Indian street food spot, it had a cool vibe, smelled great, laid back and great soundtrack. But the food was tasteless. First, while they promote the Bombay sapphire gin, they simply won’t make their also advertised gin martini out of it, even for an up-charge. I rolled and took their version which was a citrusy lime affair, when everyone who matters knows gin martinis are meant to be served dirty and with olives. Maybe that’s the New York girl in me, but moving on, the Papadam had not an ounce of cumin, seed or powder, just puffed dough. Similarly, the Haka noodles were mush and honestly tasted like nothing except maybe vinegar. Maybe the mains are better, but I’d try your luck elsewhere. My 3 purchased items are all going back mostly untouched.

We hadn't tried this place before but it sounded great from online info. Today we walked a while to get there specially but found it closed down unfortunately. Thought I would write this review to warn others it's not there anymore. Certainly at the moment anyway.

Never left reviews in my life…I felt I had to as this was the worst Indian I’ve ever had…we were also out for drinks beforehand so the badness would be less intense. The chicken was grey inside. It was terrible. Embarrassing. Had to leave and hope we didn’t get sick

Everything was delicious! Even my husband, who hasn’t liked any other Indian food he’s tried, loved it! He had the railway workers lamb and potatoes and I had butter chicken and garlic naan. Delicious!

This place is now called India Kitchen - which is a better name for it. stumbled across this place when we were supposed to go to a very famous expensive Indian restaurant but for various reasons couldn’t get there. We were hungry so despite an odd menu including cocktails and fish and chips, we decided it would do. It ended up being the best two (different) curries we have ever had. Garlic chilli chicken had depth and top notes we couldn’t quite name but it was an explosion in the mouth. Spinach Lamb was the best I have ever had. Every spice singing. The garlic naan was light and airy. The service was great - sweet girls, fast service (it was fairly quiet). It’s a peculiar business and I think there is some lacking in confidence in what they do - hence the odd mix of cocktails and western food and curry. Trust me. If you like proper Indian food made by a very talented chef at incredibly low prices - go here. And if you’re a food writer, or an investor with experience in managing talent, go and order the spinach lamb. Someone here is gifted but needs some strong guidance and confidence in what they actually do well. Thanks guys - as far as I’m concerned your waiting staff were great. I live 200 miles away but I’ve got everything crossed for you. And believe in what you do - get rid of the western food xx

A Owner of this place not paying money to own employees i worked for him 2 weeks he paid me 100£. And at the end of year i will report him to hmrc wages officers he will see karma very soon.

The restaurant is nice but seem not to care about hygiene. I went to the bathroom and there was an employee using the bathroom. When he finished he left without washing his hands. I followed him and he went directly into the kitchen. I spoke to an employee who said he was the kitchen supervisor and told him what I observed and pointed the employee out. The supervisor seemed disturbed I pointed it out and just shrugged his shoulder and stated “ok”.

Bustling place in the beating heart of Edinburgh. Dahl Makhani is very good. Not sure about everything else on the menu, as I didn't sample anything else, and my accompanying roti was bland. Plenty of room upstairs and downstairs, clean toilets (upstairs), and wide variety of choice - in terms of meals and drinks on the menu. Staff friendly & helpful.

The bar person did not seem to have a clue what she was doing, trying to serve different groups at once so everyone waited a ridiculously long time for food and drinks, when it wasn't even that busy. On a separate note when pouring a vodka with a 25ml measure you were lucky if there was 15ml in it before putting it in the glass. Twice I challenged her on this and she just smiled and continued to do it to myself and others in my company. 1st and last time I will go to this place!

new management are awful. clearly never run a bar before and don't know how to interact with customers. it used to be so nice here but we will not be returning.

The restaurant disappointed me with its meager food portions. The Delhi Style Hakka Noodles (not anywhere close to Delhi style) seemed to have an overwhelming amount of soy sauce (and Salt), giving it an unpleasant taste. Moreover, I found the prices to be surprisingly high for what was offered.

Service was really horrible even when there was no crowd. Management needs to be changed. The waiter was in so hurry to take order as we couldn't even see the menu properly 😑 Would never recommend any to go to this restaurant.

Staff were extremely rude and have zero customer service. Barely had any food items on the menu or drinks and when the food came which we were able to order it was very basic. The place was clean but we won’t be going back.

i’ve never once before given a review but this place was genuinely so bad. Firstly, it was way too overpriced with very little quantity. ( in fact it was even less than what is qualified as little) Moreover, the staff was really bad. the lady who took our orders was in such a hurry. she wouldn’t even let us think our order through. the food on the other hand was not that good. I’ve had some real nice indian food and this wasn’t even close to it. i still don’t seem to understand how this place has good reviews because that is genuinely misleading.

A cocktail bar that can't make a white russian because they have no double cream and take 8 minutes to make a standard vodka martini... I should add we were the only customers they had in at 6.30pm on a Saturday. This place has died. Leave it alone.

Wouldn’t give this place one star but I have to in order to leave this review. This place used to be wheelchair accessible but they’ve decided to put down some fake grass outside which now means they can’t now open the doors to their accessible entrance. The Disability Discrimination Act means that you have to take all reasonable measures to make your place of business fully accessible. These guys have chosen to go in the opposite direction and made their accessible entrance inaccessible FFS! So we persevered. . . Mistake. Not interested in disability rights. Told they were flouting DDA law and the barmaid laughed! Decided to leave and the barmaid fancied a go at making the whole experience worse than it already was; she was right up for a fight! AVOID!

I hopped into this restaurant during my Christmas trip for a quick dinner. Not from the name but the Indian essence provided by this restaurant is at par. We tried lot of Indian food including pav bhaji and everything was intact. So during our 4 day trip we had chance to have food from their thrice. Staff was good and friendly, location was great. I was too busy enjoying food that I forgot to take any pictures. 😁

Service way too long. Overpriced for a not very qualitative food. I had better Indian food in my life. The rice was terrible. The paneer barely tasted something. And the rose Lassi didn't have any taste at all. What a tragedy for me who love Indian food

Have to say that my wife and i from Newcastle today after travelling by car after train cancelations experieced absolutely beautiful food after explaining what we liked and finished our night off with perfection Thank you chefs and not to mention the friendly staff Defo will diary and call again

What a gem this place was! If you are looking for some tasty and spicy food that is close to home then this it the place you want to visit! Sai Priya was an excellent host and enhanced our dining experience. 🙂 Thank you Treacle.

Food was nice, service was ok, we ordered the paneer as a starter it was very nice but very stingy on the paneer, lots of onion instead which is a very cheap ingredient. Rice was poor quality too. Price was a bit on the expensive side.

Popped in for lunch with my son and husband who is Vegan very good choice on menu , staff lovely couldn’t do more. The food was beautiful and the homemade cheese was amazing definitely be back 😁

Popped in here randomly on a Sunday to get a breakfast/brunch. Very big helping and good value for money. The beans were delicious. It’s a nice space - don’t know what it would be like at night. The staff member on was really nice and friendly. The bathrooms are exceptionally clean (despite the blue door for men and the pink for women) - overall a nice vibe and not as busy as some other places for a quick bite to eat.

Terrible service, waited for over an hour for our food while others that came after were served and departed while we continued to wait, and then they brought the wrong food to the table. We promptly left at this point.

Really nice atmosphere with good beer, a fantastic vegan Burger and some good music! Definitely worth a visit!

The owner and the manager are really nice, they always seem happy and full of energy, they are always attentive to us when we go there. It's a nice atmosphere and the manager is really funny, he protected me and my friends from some guy with a mustache and a big nose molesting the men.

utter sharks - do not disply prices with VAT added, then claim menu shows it in top righ hand corner which says 'VAT charged on food' which is in itself a statment of fact and not the same as 'prices shown are ex-VAT'

Decor recently updated, it's nice and clean, staff are friendly, just had drinks, was a little cold and loud later in the evening

They have one of the best brazilian caipirinha cocktails made by Andy. Been there last Friday and forgot my earbuds. All the team was friendly and so much helpful keeping them and getting it back to me

I enjoy a great guinness and whiskey sour. Treacle really did the job during my edinburgh bar hop. Andy the bartender who did the cocktails did a fantastic job and was so welcoming. Will definitely make this a regular pit stop

A little bit of the beaten paths is the Treacle is nice bar and restaurant which provides a laid back atmosphere. A solid beer selection and and even bigger menu for cocktails, as well as a variety of food comprising two vegetarian options and a really friendly staff - what else could you and for?

Terrible service - ordered food and had to wait for chapattis for over 30 minutes. Food was served without the plates and cutlery same with water . Horrible and in experienced staff.

Soulless, but plenty of young folks seem to like it.

Had lunch at Treacle today I would recommend this restaurant as a must for an authentic taste of Indian food very hospitable staff , decor was comfortable and well worth the visit

My self,my partner and a friend were here on Friday last for a get together and drinks. The management of this establishment is questionable to say the least! How can any decent manager or management team allow a member of their own staff to be lone working in such an environment? Whilst we were there a very inebriated man was harassing and intimidating the young woman working behind the bar.She had made her feelings clear to the guy and he still wasn't getting the message. Another couple of customers attempted to ask him to leave so the woman behind the bar could do her job.They managed to get him out of the door but the guy ended up coming back and behaving exactly the same. My partner tried to intervene when he was becoming aggressive towards the woman working behind the bar but then the guy turned on my partner as well. I asked if she wanted me to try and get him out and she was caught between a rock and a hard place as her management team were useless to say the least! Why oh why would you leave a woman on her own behind the bar?I could see that the premises had CCTV but how is that going to protect anyone in reality? I have visited this premises before back in 2018 and back then it was lively,vibrant, fresh and clean. Tonight we didn't feel safe in here. The drunken customer harassing the woman behind the bar, making her feel unsafe and uncomfortable, and the lack of security or management present was very off putting. For this reason we will never return to this establishment for all the reasons stated above. I for one will be warning everyone I know not to spend their hard earned cash here or their quality time with friends and family ,as it is obvious that they will not be respected as much or protected as Treacles drunken aggressive regulars. An employer who doesn't prioritise the safety and well being of their employees and customers doesn't deserve to be an employer.

I had the most horrible experience in this place. The food took almost a hour. The staff have no clue about what there serving. And have ask them for even plates and cutlery. Wont ever go back this disaster place. #Wost of day of my life

Happy to find a table here on a Sunday when elsewhere was packed. Pleasant laidback atmosphere and staff, fast service. Definitely coming back!

This place has changed, used to be the best place for cocktails a few years back. Went in and paid £20 for 2 cocktails which were awful. Shame cos this place used to be great! Nice girls working at the bar though.

This bar has changed ownership and the food is terrible -the burgers we had were over cooked and the buns stale. The cheese still not melted. The worst burger I have ever had. To be fair the service was good but this place is to be avoided until they sort the kitchen and atmosphere. Please do -it was good before.

Dog-friendly! Delicious food even past 8pm and great cocktails. Music is on-point.

Very quiet I didn't feel comfortable in this place another weared veggie astablishment with scruffy staff

We were in here every day of our trip this week and each day the duty manager made an active point of taking care of us, he was absolutely outstanding and honestly half of the reason we kept coming back. Cocktails were A* including my girlfriend's "Breakfast tea" cocktail 🤣 would highly recommend to anyone visiting the city in the future!

The menu has changed since reopening. Now mainly burger and pizza based, which is a shame. Still the same old dreadful beer selection on draught unfortunately.

Disappointed with overall experience. Visited 07/0302020 having booked for 5pm to find notice closing at 6.30. No previous notice given. One starter cold therefore returned and new starter supplied (good). Mains ok but felt pressure to rush and no enthusiasm for us to have desert or coffee. Bill presented with staff immediately looking for payment. NOTE to management keep customer informed as would have changed booking.

Great food at reasonable prices.

Went here on Sunday afternoon - the perfect place for catch ups and cocktails. Peanut butter espresso martini, and the bath tub gin are amazing! Good food too. Staff are fab!

What can I say? This place has a brilliant atmosphere. So friendly. The staff were so welcoming and couldn't do enough for you. The food was off the wall! We left with full bellies and smiling faces. The cocktails are fab too

Chilled bar in New Town at the end of the tram line. Now serving non-alcoholic spirits. What's not to love?!

My friends & I visited this bar for lunch, in fact it was so good we went back the 3 days we were there. Everything about the place is great, the food, service, music and especially the staff they were exceptional. We will visit again on our next return to Edinburgh.
