Lovely pub and amazing staff, welcoming and friendly. First visit here despite staying in the area several times. Will definitely return.

Large pub with a beer garden in the backyard and extra rooms on the first floor. John from South Africa and the diverse team make you feel welcome as a tourist and set the benchmark for all my pub experiences in London. The menu offers main courses between £13 and £25. The food is good, I particularly enjoyed the "Beer Battered Cod & Hand Cut Chips served with garden peas & tartar sauce" and the "Star Burger (beef burger with cheese, bacon, lettuce, egg, tomato, onion rings & burger sauce)". Excellent pub typiquement anglais personnel sympa, plusieurs types de bières sont disponible, la nourriture est simple mais excellente. Le pub dispose d'une cour arrière très sympathique et chauffée au cas où. Ne ratez pas sinon le rosebeef du dimanche il est succulent. Si vous êtes dans la parages n'hésitez pas à prendre une bière et un bon plat.

Booked for a late lunch on a March Saturday after walking through Stepney via the Ragged School Museum and the canal. Both brunch and full menus available. Once we had sorted drinks choice was easy - one sausage and mash and three vegan burgers. All arrived quickly - service throughout was efficient and friendly with no intrusive attention. Three sausages with the mash a big plus and asked if onion was required - it was. Burgers were good and, well, vegan. Seated towards the back of the pub, only snag we were equidistant between two screens one showing rugger and the other soccer! Care needed on the stairs to and from loos, especially descending with a few too many!

We visit (almost) every Tuesday evening for the brilliant pub quiz, dinner and drinks. As a pesci, the menu choices for me are a bit limited, but I haven't gotten bored of them yet. The moving mountains burger is so convincingly meaty that I thought I'd been given the wrong thing, but they assured me otherwise (and I believe them). We've gotten to know several of the staff and they're always really helpful and friendly - even the new recruits don't seem to be able to do enough for you. Great size garden in the back that we enjoy during the warmer months Visited for the first time recently for Sunday lunch and really enjoyed that too - doesn't quite pip The Culpepper for best East London roast, but it's not far behind. Only one veggie option but it's really tasty (and not mushroom-based - yey!). Would highly recommend that a second veggie option of a huge portion of cauli cheese instead of any meat/alternative be added to the menu :-) Coke Zero on draft would also be a winner!

My family and I re-visted this pub on a reminiscing tour. We came into the pub and were blown away by the renovation work that has been done! You can see that there has been a great deal of thought (and money) put into this. A cool vibe and friendly atmosphere make this a must-return!! The staff are excellent and the food great and at a reasonable price too. We will be back - regularly!!

Worth a lunchtime trip purely for the nicest waiter in town (don’t know his name! Big ginger beard). So friendly, and you can tell he really enjoys the “people” aspect of hospitality. Sounds stupid to say, but not many people are that hospitable in hospitality any more. Lovely time

We are regulars at the pub on a Thursday night after music rehearsal nearby. Last Thursday, there were ten of us having drinks and a nice chat as usual when the manager suddenly turned up the music really loud. We asked him politely to turn it down, but he doubled down and told us to lump it if we didn't like it. He displayed a complete lack of respect, and he and other staff were extremely rude to us. Needless to say, we won't be going there again for drinks after rehearsal.

Fantastic Sunday Roast. This is truly a hidden gem in east London . Great staff and always so dog friendly. I absolutely love this place. Come in for the food the ambiance and hey an overall great time.

Had a negative experience with a pub. Visited on 9th of November around 5.30 pm. Tall man who first approached me was very rude and unprofessional in customer service. Was wearing dark red t-shirt and blue jeans. After I just didn't feel to stay over at all. Pub is empty and it's Thursday night... interesting...anyway had short conversation with a menager on duty not sure his name was Dave or David. He seems wasn't bothered what happened. Also I feel he was just useless. Don't think it's a good sign for a menager who is on duty. Left very upset and disappointed whith shaking inside.. Hopefully it's will go to general menager who could contact me. So I can explain everything in detais..

Popped past as I usually visit here with friends. Stopped to watch some rugby and have a drink. Went to the bar, ordered. The lady that served me pressed on the card machine the tip button without asking and I was charged for a service fee when I went to the bar and ordered my own drink. Quite sly practice as I didn't challenge it and she just acted as if it was a button she had to press for the machine to connect. (Obviously, I've been here before and other staff let me decide whether I tip or not). Just wanted others to be aware and I am happy to pass on the day/time so management can see who was working that day to address this.

We went has a family of 9 from birth to 83 the pub has a good atmosphere has you walk in. And the decor is very nice. There is a lovely large garden area and a nice upstairs area. And I’d say a meeting room Got a nice welcome and showed to a table the staff member took drinks orders asked if ready to order food the food was very nice we all had roast but different meats everyone said it was lovely We had more drinks and desert we had a great time highly recommend And look forward to returning

Nous nous sommes arrêtés ici en fin de journée vers 18h, pour le dîner assez tôt. L'entrée nous a bien interpelé avec cette façade "à l'ancienne", et une carte bien typique des dinners de Londres. L'intérieur du restaurant est un vrai retour dans le Londres historique, très vintage ! Nous étions avec un enfant, et le serveur à l'entrée nous fait savoir qu'à partir de 19h, les enfants ne sont plus acceptés car le lieu fait aussi bar. On joue le jeu ! On nous place dans une salle au fond, canapés bien confortables. Le service est très rapide, nous prenons des fish & chips et une omelette (quelques choix végétariens). Le serveur est très sympa, discute un peu avec nous et se tente au français. Une belle ambiance !

Such a shame that the manager has changed at this pub, which is our local, and used to be a regular haunt. We went for dinner on a Thursday night and it took half the food 45mins to arrive. Then, when we complained that the order was wrong and incomplete, they told us they would have to charge us for the calamari we had ordered even though it was wrong, because we had eaten it. Not only had we not ordered calamari, it never even arrived, so we hadn't eaten it at all. We were told the missing part of our food would be rushed through. 30mins later it arrived when my friend had finished all of his meal. No apology with a hint of genuine feeling was made. After a week and a half I went back in, thinking that perhaps things may have improved once the new manager had time to settle in. After walking in at 9.50pm I was told that they'd called last orders and weren't prepared to serve me, despite them apparently serving until 10pm on a Monday. For some reason I thought calling last orders still gave you a window to order a drink. Silly me. Again, the staff attitude left a lot to be desired. Won't be going again.

Met a couple of friends here for some food recently. We ordered a few of the smaller plates, the asparagus wasn’t good especially for the price, chicken better. There were no pizzas available from the menu at all. There seems to have recently been a change of manager and service has taken a turn for the worse. A main course that a friend ordered took ages to arrive and staff didn’t seem to care or apologise. It’s a big pub and times are tough but customers need to feel they are receiving value for money with food, drinks and service.

Thought I’d try the Same bday Roast here. I have to say this is the best Sunday Roast I have had since I arrived in the UK in April. Delicious, succulent and a very nice red to accompany it. VERY highly recommended.

Been walking past this place for years and today was the day I wandered in. Cosy warm welcome, Christmas lights , candles on tables , staff friendly . I just wonder why I haven’t come here before ?!? Ordered the buffalo chicken burger with blue cheese, AMAZING. Staff were very attentive give and kept checking if everything was ok, I highly recommend this place for people who live locally and haven’t been in before or tourist who wonder off Narrow street or canal walks. Next time I will come for Sunday lunch, that is a promise !

3.5. Above average food, and I love what they have done to the place… chaotic service however. Taking glasses, not asking if we want a refill. Unclear if we should go to the bar or not. Had to track somebody down to ask for menus. I like the place in spite of these things - so close to being a 4.5 fab place, just not quite. Previous times have been better so perhaps just a blip.

Having a had few very good after work meet ups at the Star thought I'd give it a go as a venue for my birthday party. I cannot thank Sam and her colleagues enough for making it such an enjoyable and memorable occasion. She helped me every step of the way. From the suggestion of booking their private garden bar for the 1st part then the upstairs lounge for the music and dancing to the best way to order food for my 60+ guests - I strongly recommended buying 10 of their pizzas at a time. The sharing platters were superb. The whole pachage was exceptionally good value All of the staff are great and really went out of their way to make the whole event run smoothly. If I could give them more than 5* I most certainly would!

The Star of the East has the character of its Limehouse location. It has different spaces inside, but also, and currently so important, two courtyard areas outside. The staff know the meaning of good service and will make you feel welcome.
