Absolutely thrilled to have the Sunday roast dinners back at the star and garter. The roast was amazing , good portion sizes for your money.friendly atmosphere as always 😊 the staff go above and beyond to make sure your meal is ok.this is mine and my family’s favourite pub . Our Dog Missy loves it here too 😊 we wouldn’t go anywhere else’s for a roast and it’s definitely cheapest anywhere we’ve seen. Clean new interior but in a old style. The garden is a forecourt out front but there is an enclosed smoking area out back with heat lamps and roof. There is a dart board and pool table and I would guess it has a capacity close to 100. The meal deals looked reasonably priced but the kitchen was closed by the time I got there. Friendly staff and locals. Will definitely be going back

It's had a really nice makeover. Still has the same great atmosphere and welcoming locals.

Absolutely awesome .... meg and chris really have got things going here with the teams support the pub is a family friendly vibrant place to be .... with things like free pool mondays quiz nights on tuesdays we as a damily will deffo be returning

Came in with friends for food and drinks and this place will now become a regular spot for us! The staff are fab, the beer is cheap and the food was fantastic and such good value for money!

A proper local that is welcoming, friendly and with a great bunch of people that work there! I popped in with friends to watch the game and ended up staying for the whole night l! The vibes were immaculate and the staff were top tier for service and bants! We will be back!

Rude staff who clearly need to scrub up on their policies. Used to come here loads but since management (I believe) has changed a few years ago, the atmosphere is now very unwelcoming and staff cause a hostile atmosphere. They were very rude and smart mouthed us over an honest mistake with what time it was. Staff accused us of trying to order for someone who was of drinking age but wasn't drinking and didn't have ID - we already stated neither drinks were for them. Staff attempted to refuse to serve us despite the 'challenge 25' only being for those who are ordering/drinking an alcoholic beverage, those ordering/drinking were not challenged over their age. Food was average at best, chicken strips were cold

Fantastic service, always very friendly and would recommend a visit with the family. Yummy hot food, freshly cooked, we always enjoy our trip there.

Food was very good service good only saw 1 problem no air conditioning.

As I am new to the area I decided to give the place a try I will deffo be coming back all the regs are very friendly especially Andy and cath Meg and Chris are lovely and welcomed me into there pub and I felt very comfortable Food was amazing service second to none and whole vibe was excellent 10/10

I popped in for a pint and a burger today . The staff were friendly and welcoming. The service was good and the burger was excellent.

Absolutely lovely lunch, nice and hot, tasty, cooked to perfection and so reasonable. Great friendly service, could not fault anything. However, very disappointed to read they are reducing their lovey menu shortly, especially the Sunday Roast. Big Mistake Greene King!

Went for lunch with my partner. Had to send the food back as the burgers were swimming in grease and had congealed fat on the buns. My partner opted for a chicken burger instead. She complained of stomach pains not long after we got home. She has been up all night being sick. It is now 10am the next morning and she is still being violently sick. I wouldn't risk bringing my family here.

Fabulous little gem of a place. Called in on an off chance with our dog before our ferry to Spain. Staff very accommodating and food was amazing Cleo our dog got treated to roast beef !!

Great pub! Lovely, friendly service. Love coming here regularly. It’s very reasonably priced, and has a very friendly atmosphere.

The Tuesday quizzes are always a great laugh, made greater by the friendly and hospitable landlords (especially when we win - *pictured). The quality of the food and drinks are top tier and prices are extremely reasonable. Big thanks to Chris and co for making the star such a welcoming place to go to.

Had a fabulous experience in this establishment. I ordered a burger and my partner had a steak, although there was a short wait ….. it was totally worth it and very reasonably priced … if I could give a better rating I would . I have to mention Meg and Lara for their exceptional customer service and hospitality.

We go quite often and it’s great as we can take our dog as well and the staff are always friendly and the service is good. Food is nice and good value.

Hmmm, they had run out of milk so I had a black coffee, only to be told they were not serving food because it was a one man kitchen and a large party had booked in, and arrived with large food orders!-

Nice local pub, which has 2 bar areas. There is a good selection of lager, cider and ales to choose from. They have a number of TVs showing sport, a dart board and a pool table.

Nice friendly pub both in the lounge part for families, and the more sporty working mans in the public bar, where you might hear some colourful language now and again lol !

Perfect for a drink or a meal, private function. Just all round! Weve had a private function there and a roast dinner now and both were brilliant. The private function exceeded expectations, the buffet was exceptional. The roast dinner was beautiful, beef was tender and the veg all fresh!

Nice staff and good draught selection. They have a small outdoor area and they can get quite busy when poker night is on, where they shut the restaurant side of the bar area which adds to the atmosphere. Lots of locals here and they show sport regularly. Not had food here but I enjoy the patio area.

Food very good, however a long wait. Only 2 staff members on.

Kids playing pool and doing coke in the middle of the afternoon, too many pubs like this. Landlords need to kick them out so that decent people might start coming back into pubs.

Food is nice with a different menu than most greene kings, but it took half an hour to get a drink each time, which is not really acceptable

Have been visiting the Star and Gartetfor many years but sadly today was the last. Was greeted by a nice Lady behind the bar who swiftly told us Sunday lunch would not be available until 130 pm. So we chose 3 rump steaks to which the Lady replied when only have2 . Ok I said 2 rumps 1 fish and chips well fish was awful told waitress it was still not cooked properly because not been completely defrosted. She apologised not her fault but can't risk coming to our old favourite anymore. .

We were wonderfully surprised at the warm greeting and informal relaxed attitude from your staff. Our expectations were met , we were both pleased with the excellent service, banter was great and the food was far superior than other local establishments we had tried. We would be delighted to advise friends and family to use this establishment. 100 out of 100 BRILLIANT. THANKYOU.

Nice local pub restraunt nothing fancy but good value for money.

Had a roast here a couple of weeks ago and the quality is really improving. Fish and chips, here last week was 10/10. Light crispy batter on thd fish which was delicious. Goid portion of chips with mushy peas and amazing chip shop curry sauce. Will definitely be having that again. Nearest local to me. Always busy with a good atmosphere and very easy on the wallet. Menu changes often. No more Heineken but Madri and Neck Oil are recent additions

Ate here for the first time today with my 4 year old daughter and her dad, staff were lovely, prices for food and drink were great and the meals were cooked perfectly and really filling. Would highly recommend this establishment.

During my visit to Portsmouth, I found the staff were friendly and helpful and I was very pleased with my choice of fish and chips from the menu.

Went for mother's day and considering they had been exceptionally busy we still had fabulous food fantastic service. I would highly recommend this place

The Star & Garter has a real community atmosphere with great food and a wide selection of beers wines and spirits. The staff are always friendly, happy and polite and deliver a brilliant service.

The star & garter is one of the few pubs in Portsmouth that feels like a real local. I live a good few miles away but it’s worth the taxi as the staff are always welcoming and the drinks are affordable compared to most pubs these days. If you’re after a friendly atmosphere, with a pool table, darts or poker nights I’d highly recommend it. Shout out to Kiera, Ryan, Chris, Meg, Tori, Tam & Lara who I’ve got to know over the past couple of years. Look forward to many more.

Outside seating is too near the main road for a comfortable meal or drink. Didn't have any food do I can't comment. Feels like a man's pub. Ok for a flyby drink.
