After walking around the walls of the Garrison (just over an hour - wonderful views) , we went into the Star Castle for a light lunch. We ate on the roof. The crab sandwich (all white meat) was superb as was the accompanying side sald (no raw onion for once). Not cheap, but worth every penny.

I was staying as a B&B guest and dined in the restaurant and was blown away by the quality and care taken. The whole menu (at least on the night I ate) was gluten free and I am sure the chefs would be able to modify dishes on other nights based on my experience - the menu changes daily. A two course dinner rate for B&B guests was £30 which was phenomenal value for the amazing food quality, plus they also provide an amuse bouche and a mid-course palate cleanser (very fancy for someone like myself!). I had a delicious monkfish and Parma ham starter followed by roast chicken.

We went for dinner really excited. We were here a few years ago and we must have liked it enough to plan it as an anniversary meal. We knew it was expensive (£55 on for four courses, £49ppn for three) but we were prepared to pay for a hearty meal. I have to give a caveat before I continue, I think this place caters to a certain kind of clientele; a fairly wealthy kind of clientele who seem content to stay in the rooms at £500 a night and probably don’t want pub grub. Also, the food was relatively interesting such as lobster, monkfish, and beef with braised ox-cheek. It all seemed to be cooked how you would expect it- the beef was very pink and bloody. That’s probably exactly how this kind of food is meant to be prepared. I am not knocking the professionalism of the chefs (except for the starters). But we hated the meal, almost every aspect of it. My wife said it was the worst meal she had ever had and whilst I am sure we have had poorly cooked inedible food elsewhere, for the price we paid then that has to be a factor in how bad it seemed. A cheap dodgy curry is a cheap dodgy curry. I love food and I have a hearty appetite but there was simply nothing in the menu to interest me. That is unheard of. When we booked the meal we were shown a sample menu and liked a few options on it. But none of these appeared on the night. Some of it was down to the fact that neither of us like fish much, or lamb, so that really only left two options. The beef or butternut squash risotto. But do I want to eat cow’s cheek? Not really.I would have killed for a beautifully cooked fillet of beef with twice cooked chips and a lovely sauce along with glazed vegetables. . But this stuff was too fancy. Some puréed mash, a small tea spoonful of wilted spinach and a couple of lumps of bleeding beef that frankly does not taste better almost raw. It’s vile. In fact it was so off putting that my wife who had ordered it swapped for my butternut squash risotto with sweetcorn and believe me I never choose the vegetarian option so you can imagine how desperate I was to have picked that in the first place). And the starter, two halves of cherry tomato with three cubes of frankly dull feta with a dollop of ground olive and some hard round twirls of hard toasted bread? I’m not a chef but I could do that. Pudding was okay, it was an alright crime brûlée, nothing special with some local blackberries and unremarkable ice cream. We were seated about a foot a way from the tables either side so conversation had no privacy. Yes, it was lovely sitting in such a lovely castle and I guess that is what you are paying for- the ambience. The bar downstairs is also charming. But it was an exceptionally disappointing experience for us and we couldn’t even leave to get food elsewhere as we weren’t really seated til 7ish which is already two hours after our usual dinner time. At the end of the meal I was starving but all the other food joints had closed, even the chippie. The Co-Op had also run out of sandwiches. So I went back to our B and B and had a bowl of cereal. We told someone local about our experience and they were surprised and said it was their favourite place to eat.If you like so called fine dining, this may be up your street, if you prefer tasty and filling food that will not be ridiculously overpriced - how much to make a butternut squash risotto? - then I would seek one of the other options. The Kavorna was very tasty, we also ate great food at Carn Vean, Little Arthur and even the Turks Head did a hearty and nice (if pricey) scampi and chips.

This dining room was like going back in time, with formal service and a slightly stuffy atmosphere. The menu was limited (only three choices at each course) so should have been excellent. Our roast beef and Yorkshire pudding main course was only OK. The beef was tasty but tough, the Yorkshire Pudding and Roast potatoes had both been cooked earlier and re heated, so were chewy and not crisp. The vegetables were a side dish of boiled carrots, broccoli and cauliflower Really? These days restaurants can and do do better with vegetables! Very 80s dining and a bit disappointing although the overworked staff did try hard to serve well.

Just had a meal at the Restaurant at the Star Castle Hotel and unless you are a resident there I would not recommend this experience for non residents. As we were not able to book until 8.15 p.m. we were rushed through our meal and were not advised that it was a 4 course meal at £45 per head. The food was good and well presented but we felt we were not welcome and should not have been there. Before we had finished our meal they were setting up for breakfast the next morning, in all not a good experience and would not return again.

Evening meal a'la carte was end of service offerings - dry and unappetising meat and fish option with very little content to either. Lobster lunch provided little in the way of ambiance for such an august place. Small lobster presented with the basic culinary dressing and served on a uncovered table on a dark stair landing (the alternative being a Dungeon Bar - darker still). Utterly unimpressed and very poor value saved only by very attentive service by young people.

The vegetarian main course was a massive disappointment, really oily and just things chucked in pasta without much thought. Such a shame as starter was amazing, meat eater loved all his food. Only one veg choice for main as a recent reviewer said, but it's a small menu so that's expected. The cheese course wasn't as good as expected either - not enough variety. Excellent service.

I had a fantastic duck dish, served with a potato cake and some red cabbage in wine which was amazing. However i was disappointed by the lack of vegetarian options. My partner is veggie and so she had only one choice which was just a fairly average pile of roasted vegetables. The desert she ordered was quite disappointing as well. It was described as as a 'pineapple crumble' but when we recived it it was essentially a slice of cooked pineapple and some biscuit crumbs on the side. A bit disappointing So to sum up, meat eaters will have some fantastic meals here, whereas vegetarians should probably look elsewhere.

Visited for lunch last week despite not staying at the hotel having seen wine tasting and lobster lunch offer on the website. Sadly wine tasting wasn’t available due to Covid but we were still able to book the lunch at very short notice, we were greeted with the utmost courtesy and offered the choice of eating in The dungeon or restaurant. Having chosen the restaurant we were then presented with the most delicious starter the chef personally prepared. The lobster while not massive was served with a wonderful salad and new potatoes. Excellent value for money and a truly wonderful experience on a rather wet afternoon. Couldn’t fault the staff or the food and would definitely visit again hopefully when we can eat al fresco in the sunshine.

We were staying at the Star Castle as B&B guests, but had asked to be accommodated in the restaurant on our first night, we ended up eating there 4 nights out of the 6. The menu was varied and the wine list quite eclectic, with wines that certainly follow the preferences of the proprietor, but then he does own a winery on the island, so hopefully knows his wines!! It was nice to see Francis Coppola wines as we had visited this vineyard and it was good to taste them again, they are not followed by many people in the UK restaurant trade. We would like to think that there is something for everyone on the menu. The dishes are well presented and very well executed. Fish dishes as you would expect are excellent. The staff are attentive, knowledgable and professional, especially Angela and Gary, who certainly are a great example of their profession. The restaurant was busy, with both guests from the hotel and visitors, both local and tourists. I would imagine this is one of the better restaurants on the island for this style of dining.

We had been warned off the Star Castle when looking for a dinner spot but found ourselves there at lunchtime after a sunny walk. We popped in for a look and were seduced by the beautiful location of the outdoor tables. Not a huge menu but we both enjoyed a beautiful, crisp crab salad and cold lager served with "polite banter" (if you like that sort of thing) and great style. Don't be embarrassed to ask for extra bread :-)It was also not as expensive as we had expected. I suspect the indoor dining could be a bit claustrophobic, but outdoors on a sunny day it was great.

We eat here every year when we visit the Scilly Isles. We have never been disappointed and this year was the same. Our party is a mix of pescatarians and carnivores and we all found something lovely to eat. Even the amuse bouche was delicious and the sorbet/soup course. The only criticism we would have is that there is no proper coffee machine and the only coffee on offer was filter which for a restaurant of it’s price bracket and standing is not really what one would expect.

We had lunch - crab salad and cheese ploughman's salad. The ambience is superb and service was friendly. The crab was yum and cheese excellent. But the salad! Boring and unimaginative. Piles of little gem lettuce and a few bits of cucumber, tomato, and onion. Bread may have been homemade, but it was dry and, for my taste, barely edible. Come on, Star Castle, you're a top restaurant, surely you can do better than this.

Venison excellent, but in fact everything we had was amazing. Carrot veloute, John dory, tropical sorbet and even the cheese board. The service was attentive and the added little touches of the booking staff made the whole evening one out of the ordinary. We had a drink in the dungeon bar before heading up to the restaurant; as a working dungeon previously it has had a few famous prisoners - look out for the little plaque with names and dates, or simply ask Chuckles the host who will gladly regale you with the details, whilst efficiently serving drinks and witty anecdotes.

I have pluses as well as a few niggles about this place. Fine dining it certainly is, and we were treated like kings. I particularly liked the way they ensured that my food was cooked without butter since I have a hatred for it. Staff were lovely, the ambience very nice, but oh for a tiny bit more on the plate. We didn't opt for every course because we aren't big eaters, but wished we had. We had a main and dessert. The main consisted of about five slivers of venison resting on a small bed of red cabbage and about a thumb-size of crushed rosemary potatoes. My husband said, although beautifully cooked, he needed to send out a search party for the potatoes. He eventually found them lurking shyly under the fish - a thin morsel of some kind of mash. Come on Star Castle. People are on holiday - we'd walked the whole of the island that day which comprised 11 or so miles and were famished. I wish restaurants would rid themselves of this myth that it is "common" to serve up decent portions. Take heed - we are not common! The puds arrived and again my other half had to put his glasses on to find the tiny ball of clotted cream. We left wanting more and felt unfulfilled. In fact got back to where we were staying and had a big slice of scrumptious (oversized!) lemon drizzle cake that our lovely host had left in our room - thumbs up for Dan at the Wheelhouse!! He's a man after our own hearts! My other gripe is this: for such an exotic place the outside lighting is atrocious, in fact NON-EXISTENT. First of all we had to puff our way up a hill to get there - nothing short of a cable car needed here!. But when we came out after our meal it was dark and literally pitch black! Not even a sensor light in sight. We staggered our way over cobbles and eventually took out our phones and used the torches to guide us the rest of the treachorous way. What would happen if someone fell and injured themselves badly?

So are here on a number of nights whilst staying in the hotel. The room itself is atmospheric as it’s in the original part of the castle, however this makes it awkward to access for those with a disability. Once in you will find that the tables are in most instances very close together, not good for any kind of private meal and some tables stick out into the middle of the room leaving you feeling like everyone is walking around you. This could be solved by taking out a couple of tables, but this might well come up against the profit motive. The service is good, staff are friendly efficient and proffesional. The food is good, the menu nicely balanced however it’s a shame that the portions are small, tending at times toward tiny, just about acceptable when you pay £25 a head when staying in the hotel, not when paying £40 plus per head if coming in as a non resident despite the 4 courses on offer. The wine list is extensive and the wines we had were good but over priced. Overall it just about squeezes a good from me but only just, it just feels like the whole enterprise is about making money at times at the customers expense, if that feels critical so be it and I expect the management to challenge this as is their right but would ask them to look at the issues raised dispassionately and they might come to a different view.

Eating at Star Castle’s Dining Room Restaurant is a different experience to anywhere else on St Mary’s and is a real treat. The food is exquisite and the serving staff are very attentive. Four courses cost £45 but we were charged substantially less for our youngest daughter who didn’t eat from the main menu and was offered sausage and chips instead. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. The only downside was that, when the booking was made, my husband had mentioned it was a double celebration - a birthday and another member of our party having overcome cancer. We were promised some bubbly to celebrate but this never materialised. We plan to return next summer though as it was one of the highlights of our holiday.

We booked the star castle as a bit of luxury as it was the first part of our honeymoon and this place doesn't disappoint! From being collected at the airport to having your bags delivered to your room (ours had it's own little garden with views all around the harbour and bays), to the bottle of champagne chilling etc... there are 2 dining rooms, under 2 head chefs. Each with it's own style, but both excellent! These guys can cook! After eating on the first night we booked In for the rest of our stay! Each restaurant changes its menu daily, a copy of the following days menus are put in your room (along with the weather forecast) when housekeeping turn down your bed. The wine list is enormous for such a small hotel. If I had to make 1 criticism, you can tell that the chefs take it in turns to cook breakfast! Different presentation and degrees of cooking items on breakfast each day. But, I am scrapping the barrel to find something to criticise. We will definitely return. "Stuffy physically and socially" is what my insightful son said as we left the premises after what we had rather hoped would have been a special lunch at the end of our marvellous holiday. We were accompanied by my elderly (semi disabled) mother and whilst recognising the historical ambience of the place, the Hotel makes little provision for such and rather more could be done in my view. The Scottish receptionist was very friendly but her advice of where to eat if you struggled to use the stairs as my mother does, contradicted the rather more curt and old fashioned style of the waiter. We ended up in the Dungeon - musty but full of character! The waiter asked me to be quick and "joked" that he'd rather I didn't order the Fish and chips as it would speed things up! . Sorry to say the butternut squash soup was bland, was served in the shallowest soup bowls I have ever seen! and accompanied by slightly dry bread. The fish in the fish and chips dish was small and unexciting but the chips were excellent. The meal was inappropriately accompanied by a side salad rather than peas. I appreciate that the Hotel is recognised for its evening meals (which I am sure are excellent) but I don't feel that lunchtime visitors should be treated as second class citizens despite the lower costs that I assume they 'enjoy'? My advice to the Hotel management should it be wanted would be that mid day visitors are prospective hotel guests so please don't rest on your laurels despite the enviable and lovely location that you enjoy.

We know the Star Castle Hotel quite well but have never, until now, had dinner there. The food was very well cooked, and presented, with generous portions. The staff were cheerful and professional. The meal, including an expensive bottle of wine, came to just over £50 a head. Those either side of us were obviously also enjoying their meals. We walked out of our 'Birthday' meal with a clear sense of really having enjoyed ourselves. Nothing to criticise.

It was a windy day so I decided to walk the garrison on the hilltop overlooking the bay. Lovely walk up the hill past the guard rooms to the star Castle hotel. It is quite an imposing building with wonderful views and a conservatory restaurant.

This is a high class restaurant serving well presented and imaginatively cooked local produce. The menu changes daily, albeit that many of the key ingredients remain the same - in particular, the wonderful local fish. The staff are friendly and efficient. The wine list is interesting, although prices are high. The cost of food is very reasonable. Highly recommended.

This was our second stay at the Star Castle Hotel and as we arrived in the afternoon we were unable to book a table in the Conservatory restaurant. However we were able to dine in the Castle Restaurant instead. This was our first time there and we were not disappointed. We received a warm welcome and shown to an intimate, candlelit table for two. The food was excellent and the service second to none. As a previous reviewer has commented there was a wonderful ambiance and atmosphere and a varied menu to choose from. After that it was difficult to choose between this restaurant and the Conservatory. The Castle Restaurant is more inclined to meat dishes whilst the other to fish dishes. Both are excellent.

My girlfriend and I visited St Mary's for a week, staying at the Star Castle hotel. Upon arriving we were warmly welcomed by the receptionist who showed us to our room, our room was very clean and tidy and every morning, noon and evening we had a maid come round to check if everything was OK. The food was absolutely magnificent, not only did it taste great it looked great too. Very good service throughout our stay, will definitely recommend to all my family. Thank you Star Castle team.

The Castle Restaurant, as the name suggests, is located inside the walls of the castle, built in the 1550’s. We did our homework and came to the conclusion that that this was probably the best place to eat on the islands. Diners can enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the cosy Dungeon bar. There are two restaurants within the castle walls, both under the same management. One is a trendy glass conservatory on the castle lawn and the other is more traditional, within the granite walls of the castle itself. My wife and I chose to eat in the more traditional, granite walls and timber beamed restaurant. There is a fireplace and fire during the colder months. Even before we had ordered our meal and drinks we felt that this was going to be something special.

Fantastic 5 night stay for dinner bed and breakfast. Superb food! Fresh fish cooked to perfection. Sensible portion sizes after full on fresh air days with our dog on boat trips and long walks round the islands. Great service without being intrusive, the staff were friendly but efficient and made us feel welcome and looked after. The place to stay on the Scillies to have a relaxing time. We swam in the pool before breakfast and every afternoon. Breakfast was splendid - can recommend smoked haddock and poached eggs (with a cheeky addition of black pudding!) We will be back!

Lovely food. Friendly, helpful staff. Well worth the higher prices. The fresh ingredients are lovingly prepared and the most delicious meals produced as a result. The castle is very atmospheric which adds to the experience. I hope to return some day!

Star Castle is probably the best hotel on St Marys and their restaurant is very good. I prefer to eat in the main restaurant, the alternative in the conservatory is mostly fish and the atmosphere of the old castle is part of the experience pre dinner drinks in the dungeon bar, another must.

The construction of the Star Castle was started in 1593, ordered by Elizabeth 1. I'm not sure when it became a hotel but it certainly has so much character. We had lunch on battlements which is a very lovely garden area with views around the island of St Marys, through the slits for the archers of old. We really enjoyed our BLTs, my husband being an expert BLT consumer, rated these very highly. The service was excellent too. Watch out for the 5 foot doorways though and take a ball of wool to find your way out!

Dining in a castle is certainly a treat. Unfortunately it being a castle, there are no views here, but the food makes up for that. The service is friendly yet formal and the menu is lovely with mostly local dishes. The menu changes daily. The pub bar was very stuffy and mildew, I guess that's not too surprising given the age of the place. Skip the pub and focus on a lovely dinner here. Oh yes - they had a very nice wine list that included varieties from the local vineyard on the island.

The ice creams here are beautiful! Really generous portions and are very well presented. The customer service we received was outstanding, my daughter had a massive meltdown (ASD) and they were nothing but supportive, understanding and helpful. We'd had a very tough day today with meltdowns galore and this one was by far the worst of the day yet I never felt alone or judged. People like you make the biggest difference and I am so very grateful for you going out of your way to help and care. Thank you x
