Star Cafe Pie & Mash in Rochford

Our favourite place for lunch when in Rayleigh, it gets quite busy (you might have trouble finding a table) between 12:30 and 1 o'clock. Food is always good quality, nicely presented and piping hot, and the prices are reasonable.

I haven't had traditional pie and mash in years. When i was younger i would get taken to The Roman Road in East London then as i got older id go to Greenwich. Today myself and my wife were in Rayleigh and wanted something to eat and i was beckoned to The Star cafè and there is was on the menu, traditional pie, mash and licqour and oh my god it was good. Traditional water pastry pie , lots of licqour and of course i had to put Malt vinegar and pepper on it. It was absolutely delicious and piping hot and whats best to flush it down, a good old mug of tea. 5 stars to The star cafè, ill be back very very soon.

Having lived in Rayleigh most my life & always past this place so thought I give it a go to try out some decent pie & mash, food & customer service was lovely & very good prices decent sized portions too, if you want to try some decent food then I recommend this place ! I definitely visit again

Two fry-ups, with a can of drink each for £22 just shows how ludicrously expensive things have become. Although the meal was fairly acceptable, the "fried slice" was just half of a slice, instead of the whole thing, but then, with the scrambled egg served on top of it, it was made inedible anyway, after it had soaked up the moisture from the egg. All in all, not impressed

Started coming here a few weeks ago with colleagues and now we visit every Wednesday for takeaway breakfast. The baguettes are delicious and extremely reasonable. The staff are always friendly and professional when we arrive.

Understandably very popular "caff". Very good food with unusually cheap prices. Extensive menu with flexible options. Quick competent service.

I’ve been here twice now. Nice typical little cafe. We were going to go to the fish and chip place next door but it was full so we ended up here. And we’re glad we did! Fish and chips was still good, quick service, friendly staff, you get what you paid for. They were VERY busy but made sure to find us a table. We asked if she could wipe it for us and they were quick to respond with a cloth. Only criticism is that’s it’s chilly when you sit by the door but other than building to create a double door system there’s not a lot they can do about that! But would go again!

2 people having pie and mash with a can of drink each for £13. You really cant complain at those prices. Food is excellent and service is great too. You wont be disappointed

Popped in the other day for breakfast. In the area for business. Premises nice and clean. Breakfast beautiful. Not a trace of grease. Worth visiting Table service Staff excellent

I looked up the nearest Ie and Mash shop and it states that the Rayleigh shop was open until 5.30 today so left my home ( nearly 4 miles away) to get some pies for the freezer. The shop was closed. 😡

The cafe was amazing. I ordered sausage and chips and tasted incredible. My dad ordered pie and mash and he said was great. My sister was pleased with her meal and so was my mum who ordered a all day breakfast. The staff are perfect and food waiting is not a problem at all. I've already visited this place before and it is just insane. Really would visit again.

Went with family. Had pie mash and eels. Pretty good. It was hot and tasty and came up quick. Staff friendly and efficient. Place was very clean. Very busy and very popular.

Visited here today for the first time and I will definitely be back.We had pie and mash and it came up quickly, piping hot and presented well.The cafe was clean and welcoming and the staff were friendly and helpful. The toilets were easily accessible and the ladies toilet was large (for disabled customers) and had a changing unit.A great place to eat with an extensive menu.I will be returning soon.

This place has an amazing array of food on offer and the food is very good and the waiting staff are fast and friendly. It’s an excellent little diner right in the heart of the high street too. We regularly go there for their breakfasts and a nice cuppa.

Sometimes pop in on a Saturday or Sunday morning for a bit of breakfast before doing a bit of shopping Staff always happy and efficient Food is always served fast, very good and reasonably priced.

The menu and food quality is overall very good, I especially like the pie and mash which I would highly recommend but the roast dinner was a bit of a let down, tasted like it was all defrosted. Staff are very friendly and the service is quick so I always find myself returning. Prices are quite reasonable but they should definitely look into getting a card machine as it is currently cash only.Be prepared for it to get very busy during lunch time as it is one of the most popular places in town, I do think a lot of elderly people stick around for a long time after they’ve finished their meals. It’s usually quite quiet during breakfast though and their breakfast is excellent, so highly recommend trying that!Overall the setbacks are fairly minor as the food quality, prices and service are generally very good. 8/10

Whenever I visit my relatives in the West country i take down pie and mash, for the first time we had to bin all of it after tasting, it was disgusting

Stopped by for lunch for some traditional pie and mash. Very hard to find a genuine pie and mash shop these days and this one was top rate. It was very busy which points to the popularity of the menu. You know your getting the real “liquor” when jellied eels are on the menu. There is a huge selection of meals and some classic desserts can’t decide whether the jam rolley polley or the apple crumble with custard is my favourite dessert. The staff are all very friendly, welcoming and genuine. The service is prompt and the food served hot. The prices are very reasonable, just over £40 for lunch and a dessert for 4 with tea and coffee. Couple of parking spaces out front and across the road (unless the street markets are on) but plenty of parking on Webster’s Way, cut through the lane to the High Street. The cafe is split level so there is seating on the lower level for wheelchairs and people with mobility issues and a few seats out the front. Great atmosphere, value and hearty food. Highly recommend.

We took my husband mother here for lunch as she spotted the sign for pie and mash . I must say it was really good and very reasonably priced. I noticed the other diners tucking into lovely home cooked meals . We would definitely come here again . The staff are so friendly and welcoming and nothing was to much trouble . Well done Star Cafe

We go every week for coffee and brunch, the cheese on toast is excellent, with lots of cheese its also very good value, we tend to have the same every week as it is so delicious coffee is good too.

Came here with my dad and brother for some lunch and it was really nice and tasty.I liked the sauages especially and also the service was bang on.

A very extensive menu for Breakfast, Brunch or Lunch and Afternoon Tea. Excellent value set breakfast options with tea or coffee included. Food prepared beautifully, pipping hot by efficient and helpful staff. Visit regularly.

The boss is intimidating and rude. I frequent this place, but unfortunately, bit into a stone inside the pie that, in turn, broke my tooth. My filling - a separate piece of matter - fell out as a consequence. The boss claimed he had no Accident Book and tried to thrust £4 into my hand. He always does this, he said (why?). I want him to pay for a personal injury that would not have happened had I not eaten there. I will pursue. Watch this space...

Very nice pie and mash I had 2 pies which was very big. This place is all ways busy so some times hard to get a table.

This cafe is exceptional value for money serving delicious, traditional food from roasts to omelettes and pie and mash. Don't change a thing.

Me and my wife often come here after dropping the kid off to school. The food is always nice and prices are very affordable.

Had the star special breakfast £ 8.80,( think it used to be £7.50) It was worth the extra money , as it was fresh , hot , tasty, and massive. Service was fast and friendly... I will return.

Had brunch and food was excellent. Just like home-cooked. Good choice on menu at a reasonable price. Also, the toilet has baby changing facilities, which obviously is a bonus. Staff very friendly and helpful.

I rang and asked if they serve halal meat and the guy didn't even seem to know what I was talking about and didn't know if the meat they purchase is halal or not! Very unsatisfactory. The public has a right to know what they are eating. I am utterly against halal meat as it is an inhumane way of slaughtering animals.

In the middle of Rayleigh High Street this cafe offers a substantial breakfast menu. The full English was a large plateful of fried egg, sausage, two rashers of bacon, beans, fried bread and mushrooms at a very competitive price. For those looking for something more unusual eels and mash was on the menu (first time I had come across this outside the east end of London). Staff were friendly and efficient in uncomplicated surroundings.

I eat in the Star Cafe a couple of times a week. They cook good regular meals and the cafe is clean and spotless. The pie and mash us fine but they have so much more on their menu and the service is efficient.

Normally visit about once a fortnight and the food and staff are pleasant enough. Went in today only to find that the prices have increased by 25%. I normally pay £4.90 today £6.10. How can this possibly be justified when inflation is around 3%. I walked out and went to the Roebuck instead, much cheaper for breakfasts. Bye bye Star Cafe.

Absolutely great menu with great choices and delicious food. Cannot fault this little gem at all and wouldn't hesitate to return here to eat, if you can ever get a table as it is always packed to the rafters!!!

Pasó por aquí con uno de mi equipo y cogí un rápido pastel de puré. Un lugar muy limpio y los aseos impecables. Personal muy atento. Comida caliente y sabrosa. Volveremos.

Este lugar está generalmente lleno todo el día, es un café con una diferencia. La comida es fantástica, que llega bien y rápido y el personal es muy amable.

This is in the high street and is usually always busy, it's certainly has a good selection including Pie an Mash, prices are good, you won't be disappointed.

Pie mash liquor yum!! Will always come back as locals and tastes pretty good next to London, breakfasts are good as well never tried lunch but dinner and lunch ok give it a go

Popped in for a late breakfast and was blown away by the amazing value and quality of the food. We are now regulars !!

The food is very good for fry ups and greasy spoon lunches. Very welcoming staff. Don't worry about the older style greasy spoon look, the food is what matters.

I am rather partial to the odd pie & mash and was disappointed when the pie & mash shop near the Roebuck didn't work out. However Star Cafe, came to my rescue. I have enjoyed several visits and would not hesitate to recommend.

Excellent cafe, very clean good value and freshly cooked meals. Breakfast is particularly good with a large choice of options. The staff are all warm and welcoming. Definitely recommend for breakfast next time you are in Rayleigh, you won't be disappointed.

Service was good but food was average greasy spoon fayre. Haven't been tempted to return after first visit.

Polite staff, clean premises, reasonable selection. All the vegetables seemed to be frozen not fresh. No stuffing with the roast chicken, shame, not a difficult addition to have. Meat appeared to be presliced and warmed up. Apple crumble and custard not well presented, tasted ok.

Best Pie & Mash in town. Good hot food. Good portions, pleasant surroundings and well woth a visit if you're in town.

We try loads of cafes but we always compare them to star cafe pie and mash! It's our favourite cafe and we always go here when we can! I get no. 5 breakfast every time as it's perfect for me. Included in this breakfast is bacon, egg, tin tomatoes, sausage, hash browns, coffee and toast and all for just £5! Both our meals always come out in good time even when busy and also lovely hot and fresh! The coffee is especially great tasting. For a fry up , the breakfast isn't greasy and my egg is always cooked just right! The chefs and staff are so polite and attentive and just great at what they do! They even make you feel extremely welcome when coming and going. If you are a big fan of cafes, you have to try it. We love it!

Serves type of food you would expect in this type of Cafe. The one meal that stands out is the Pie / Mash.It has a real authentic taste, and is top quality.Service is efficient and always with a smile.

This cafe does a roaring trade on Tuesday lunch times when I go with a crowd of friends. It is very reasonably priced, the portions are massive and delicious. The staff are friendly and the cafe is very clean.

I went to this cafe for pie and mash, it was reasonably priced at £4.40 including a cup of tea. The food was delivered quickly and was of good quality. The cafe can be really busy, surely a very good sign. Recommended.

This is a friendly clean cafe with a large variety of meals at very reasonable prices. We had pie and mash with eels which was cooked well and we thoroughly enjoyed. Will be visiting again soon.

Recently started to have breakfast here on a regular basis.The food is good quality, plentiful and quite reasonably priced.The staff are polite and curious with excellent timely service.On occasions the cafe can be rather busy which is due to its success.

I have eaten here a few times the pie. And mash is lovely and the breakfast menu is good I don't like the coffee very strong but that's me, eat her often good prices enjoy xx

A bit crowded on my visit but still served on time. Nice to find somewhere serving good old British food for a change as well as offering burgers etc. Menu can be a bit confusing as if you wish for a bigger pie you have to order two.OK for a quick snack and very reasonably priced. Also conveniently situated right by the main bus stop in town.

A superb cafe in Rayleigh offering good value meals always freshly cooked to order. A very popular place used by lots of locals who have discovered this little treasure, a family run business that beats all the other chain cafes in the high street.

Being brought up in the east end of London I did not think I would ever find a pie and mash shop to be as good. But this one is excellent good quality pies and so reasonably priced.Their full menu is so varied inexpensive and well cooked.Just remember they only accept cash !

If you are looking for decent reasonably priced café food served in spotless surroundings then this is the place. We often go there, as an example, Beans on 2 toast, Poached Eggs on 2 toast, tea / coffee all under a Tenner ! The waitresses are super efficient and they keep the place pristine. Don't just take my word for it, the place is packed every day !

I thought this was only a Pie and Mash shop when walking past and seeing the name of it. We went in for a late breakfast after looking through the window and seeing people eating all sorts!When we found a table, there was still a cup left from the last customer; the waitress came up immediately apologising and wiping the table clean. A bit different from the time at a local pub chain, where we asked for a cloth to wipe the table ourselves-and were given one!!We ordered a Spanish omelette with salad and a Star Special breakfast; they both arrived very soon after.The portions were huge, hot and tasty. We will be back!

We come here a lot with our toddler and the service is always amazing. The staff are friendly, the food is cooked fresh and while it's standard greasy spoon fare it's not *too* greasy if you know what I mean. The full English breakfast (two bacon, egg, sausage, mushrooms, fried slice and beans plus tea or coffee and toast or bread and butter for around a fiver) is my husband and I's naughty breakfast of choice, with our toddler enjoying either scrambled egg or beans on toast. Pie and mash (and proper liquor) is great too, although since we've discovered breakfast we tend to go in for that more often than not.Definitely recommended if you want a clean, reasonably priced and freshly cooked meal from a surprisingly extensive menu. It's not Michelin starred but as cafe's go it's the cream of the crop.

cheap cafe , ping meals n such but you get what you pay for. always clean and always polite , not flavourful food which is why it is popular with the elderly as there is not alot of spices or herbs etc , just plain and simple. Piue mash and liquor is not authentic at all but it is not unpleasant. I love pie mash and liquor but this is more of a powdered bisto version of liquor, and would not recommend for this but good for jacket potato, bacon sani's etc

I visit the café with my boyfriend and his grand parents. Every time we go, it's a fantastic atmosphere. There is a wide variety of food on the menu from roast dinner, to pie and mash, to Lasagne to sandwiches. Jodie, one of the waitresses is amazing, she's friendly and very energetic. When she's not there, it's very quiet. The only small issue is that there is not a lot of room/space, you do feel like you're sitting on each other. I can't knock anything else about star cafe as its easy, cheap and incredible food and service.

This is a typically English café (but run by a Turkish Family).Everything is spot on. Varied Café style menu but also serves East End Pie & Mash (very typical of East London with proper liquor). I enjoyed it immensely.If you want a good meal, with good ingredients but don't want to spend a fortune then this is the place to go.

It is a lovely place and great to know its local. The staff are really friendly and the pie and mash is really tasty. The food also came very quickly, even when the cafe was nearly full! Therefore it's a good place if your in a rush. If you don't fancy pie and mash, there is plenty of other food available. It's very clean and has a great atmosphere, seems exactly the same as if you went to the east end! I recommend the cafe for lunch.

Great little place for lunch, good old pie and mash with liquer, and not expensive, love it....You can have other food but I recommend the pie and mash, food is well priced and I can get a wheelchair inside with no problem.Need to go back for the breakfast.

I come from the east end of London and was brought up on pie & mash.This is the closest thing to those original cafes.Just remember if you pay a visit - NO Credit/debit cards - cash only -Don't let that put you off !

Lovely little café. Quick efficient service. Staff are very friendly and the food is cooked fresh and whatever we have chosen has been faultless. Tables are clean. As I said I will be glad to be moving near Rayleigh soon.

Been here a few times and each time I have had great service. Both times enjoyed pie and mash with a mug of tea.Waitress was attentive, food delivered fast and very hot. Just what you need.

Went there today with a friend, very clean and fast service (which is what you want when you are on an hours lunch break) .The food was cooked fresh and the portions were very generous will definitely go back as the prices were very reasonable.

I visited just to get 'the feel of the place' and for coffee. The café was very busy and I waspleasantly surprised. The coffee was very good. Everywhere was very clean. Tables werecleared and cleaned promptly. Service was good. I pass the café frequently and it is alwaysbusy.

One of the best breakfasts for miles around. Excellent value and perfectly cooked - it's very hard to fault. Friendly staff and quick service. I've also tried the pie and mash and that's great too.

Excellent little cafe in the high street, very basic decor but always spotlessly clean. Very cheery waiting staff always give time for a few words, especially for the older customers who are on there own which is lovely to see. The food is always lovely, very cheaply priced main meals, served fresh and always piping hot. Only improvement I could suggest would be one or two home made cakes to have with a coffee if you did not want more than a quick pit stop but highly recommend this little gem.

I love this cafe! Every time I have visited, I have enjoyed well-cooked, fresh food. They are polite and welcoming and show a genuine interest in their customers. The quality of the food is over and above what you'd expect from a cafe and there is a good variety apart from the pie and mash if you want it. The roast dinners are gorgeous and include 'proper' vegetables - not out of a packet! The helpings are massive and the prices lowt so win-win! I go in regularly now as I know I will be happy with everything.

Visited this cafe for a quick snack with a friend. Staff were very polite. Cafe was very clean. The food was well cooked and reasonable priced It was quite busy but.it.was.Not.cramped plenty.of space.for pushchairs,.wheelchairs etc. I will visit again

My boyfriend and I go into this cafè with his grandparents and just us alone. Every time I go in there, they're always happy. Fantastic food with a wide selection of choice to eat. Relatively cheap as well as drinks. One experience out of many we found a hair but they sorted that out within instance. Great vibe, great atmosphere, local. Only thing to improve would be the size of the cafè, it's a little enclosed but apart from that. Every single visit has been 10/10. Highly recommend this cafè!

went into this café looked lovely and clean outside was busy inside people looked happy so went in sat down at vacant table read through menu and choose our meal assistance took my order was smiling and happy waited 10mins which was lovely brought our drinks while waiting the food was lovely hot and plates knives and forks clean impressed yes I was took the plates away but was asked if we had finished also was offered a crease proof bag for my left overs which I accepted they said goodbye to us . defo go there again . thank you staff at star cafe
