I had a lovely time here yesterday for late lunch/early Fourses, staff very friendly and welcoming, lovely peaceful atmosphere, outside seating in the warm sunshine as well as indoor option, and I had The Very Best Ever made onsite by chef Chicken&Ham pie, you do really have to try these pies!! along with a generous steaming hot latte. Team can do takeaway drinks and food right up to closing time like any sit-in establishment, and website is very clear about this. I would definitely come here again and bring family/ friends. Used the NCP car parks, and saw happy dogs enjoying the big green Castle surrounds.

Discovered this place over the summer and thought it was lovely. Made a special trip yesterday to have a cuppa and a piece of cake and to check on the menu as was intending to bring my family from London and Canada ( a party of 6 ) for lunch today. However, we arrived at the tearoom at 3.30 ( website states closing at 4pm) to be told, in a very frank manner at the door, that they were already clearing away for the day so only do takeaways from 3.30. Not impressed as had travelled from Locks Heath especially, checking that we would be in time to have a quick cuppa and a piece of cake before closing. I understand that it is run by volunteers but if you stop serving at 3.30 to allow half an hour to tidy up then maybe it would be wise to reflect this on your website page. We saw the chap who spoke to us leaving at 3.52, well before 4pm closing time. Unfortunately that has put us off somewhat, so won't be returning again

Was going to pop in for lunch as had heard good things about the tearooms and it's volunteers. Sadly there were at least 3 small dogs running loose outside whilst their owners were all sat under the big plastic awning. Now even though I was with my dog on her lead, I don't really want dogs running around my table whilst I'm trying to eat my food. Went to the entrance door to ask if I could sit inside with the dog, but met by A sign saying no dogs except assistance dogs. So not A lot of help as I was on my own and certainly couldn't tie my dog up outside with the dogs running loose whilst the owners took no notice. I understand that dogs will be running loose in the grounds and that's great, but not when A tea room garden goes into A graveyard.

After a walk round Portchester Castle don't miss St Mary's. The church itself is worthy of attention and we were lucky enough to be shown it by one of the lovely volunteers running the tea room. The tea room serves all manner of sweet and savoury treats, all homemade and utterly delicious.

We came here for a very special 60th Wedding anniversary for our parents today. They married at this beautiful church on the 15th August 1964. Ron and his team went to so much trouble creating the loveliest and most delicious afternoon high tea for us and we were positioned just to the left of the altar so just lovely for my parents to enjoy tea with the spot where they exchanged their vows in full view! Food was delicious - everything home baked and Ron and his team couldn’t have done more for us or made us feel more welcome! Thank you all!

Fantastic experience on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The food was of excellent quality, plentiful and extremely good value. You can chose to eat inside (which has limited space), at an outside table or take a blanket and enjoy the shade of the castle walls. Very children friendly, and dog friendly outside of the tea room itself. The number and friendliness of the staff/volunteers matched the quality of the food. I love Portchester Castle and will certainly be visiting these tea rooms more often. Thank you.

Friendly staff/volunteers. My tea was served in a dirty mug and wasn’t hot only luke warm. We had to wait 25 minutes for two basic toasties. Mine was burnt. Shame as had been looking forward to the visit. Basic toasties with no salad garnish or crisps. Also just as an observation - they serve Nescafe instant Lattes etc and as this is a church I figured they might serve Fair Trade coffee and tea? Nestle is known to be very unethical. Thank you.

I've visited the tea room on a number of occasions and have also eaten lovely homemade cakes, scones, and sandwiches. This week and last week, I took two young people who are both nonverbal and very autistic. The greeting we received was amazing, particularly today as my young person had a moment where he couldn't cope. He fell to the floor, blocked the way in and out of the tea room, and the staff didn't react at all. A member of staff approached after my young person had calmed down and was fantastic. She took my order, delivered my order outside where we were sitting, and took my payment. It turned out she used to work in a specialist school and completely understood my situation. Also, on my other visit, we had a lady using Makaton signing with us. A slightly stressful moment eased with such understanding. I would highly recommend a visit to the tearoom as well as the grounds of Porchester Castle. Thank you

Having walked round the castle went in to get a hot cup of coffee on a cold day. Went up to counter. Three men behind having a chat. One glanced at me then turned back to continue his conversation. A while later another looked at me, I smiled but again they continued chatting. I appreciate their conversation may have been important but they could have at least acknowledged me. I felt really uncomfortable and left without purchasing anything.

We called here before visiting the castle, and were so pleased we did. There’s a good range of cooked food (toasties, bacon/sausage cobs, etc), proper tea and coffee, and an array of homemade cakes. The staff were delightful - very friendly, delivered good service, and enjoyed sharing the history of the café and church with us. The highlight was the personal tour of the church afterwards. I think the lady’s name was Jenny - such a fount of information, and she made it really interesting. She clearly has a love for the church and its rich history, which was infectious. In fact I read up about Queen Anne as a result. I loved the rafters made from disused ships’ timbers - absolutely fascinating.

Portchester Castle is a fantastic place to visit, not only for the history but for St Mary's tea room! It has gone from strength to strength over the years and since professional cook, Ron Prior, took it over, it's food quality knows no bounds! The fare is varied and all delicious but my favourite is the pies. Ron isn't stingy on the fillings and his pastry is amazing. The staff are friendly and helpful and will stay and chat with you, if that's what you'd like or politely leave you in peace if you'd rather. The tables inside the church are spaced out and, weather permitting, there are more tables outside. The tearooms can be found tucked away round the side of the church. (See photo)

Stumbled on this gem while visiting Porchester Castle. The church is in the grounds and on a miserable cold and wet day we took refuge. What z lucky stroke. Coffee, tea and a selection of the most gorgeous home made cakes. 3 of us went for lemon tart (sorry to the lovely lady who made it forgot your name) but it was the lightest most delicately flavoured tart with light crispy pastry. One of of us had a delicious Victoria sponge. The best to come we noticed the home made pies and thought wow we will take them instead of eating out. OMG pies to die for pastry great filling huge chunky pieces of steak not corporate mass produced rubbish. Gorgeous thank you to you all.

After taking the dog for a walk around the sea wall, we went inside the grounds of the fort to see a mobile van selling coffee and a sign for the church T room, we opted for the T room. On entry the ladies there ask for your details for track & trace and show you into the church at a vacant table. Staff are wearing masks and they use a simple card system on the tables “clean” or “dirty” so when you leave you turn the card over to dirty to ensure another customer would know not to sit there. They offer a verity of lite lunches, homemade pies are offered so I asked for “pie & chips” but unfortunately they do not offer chips, however with salad, the pie was delicious. After a walk along the seafront this is an ideal establishment to rest with a lite meal & T. We shall visit again to try the remaining pies they offer. Thanks TS

Visited her for coffee and the latte was nice and hot as we like it. Super location. At the time of the visit the one toilet had a queue but otherwise perfect.

We were pleasantly surprised at the prices, which are very reasonable and we had a cake each, whereas we would normally share to reduce the cost. Gorgeous cake, and all the other food going out looked lovely.

My elderly mother and I had a nostalgic walk round the walls of Portchester Castle and stopped for tea in this delightful tea room. The cakes and the tea were just right, and the service excellent.

After visiting the historic, pretty little church, don’t forget to pop into the adjacent tea room where you can enjoy very generous portions of delicious homemade cakes.

Toasted sandwiches with trimmings, great cakes, nice coffee and tea, and stupendous hot chocolates - always served by efficient and friendly staff, and for an amazingly good price: this is a must for anyone visiting Portchester Castle, St. Mary's Church, or the surrounding area. Dog walkers please note - you are not allowed to take dogs inside the cafe, but you are allowed to sit at tables at the back of the church - and there are always seats outside in good weather. A real gem!

One my visit to Portchester Castle. Glad St. Mary's Church is here. Located in the walls of the castle and the only place right near the castle to eat. They have a very small kitchenette, so it's only a few simple sandwiches with salad and crisps. They also have wonderful tea and homemade cakes. They have a tiny gift shop section with jams. All the volunteers are polite and sweet. One lady also gave me a brief description of the church. It was informative to walk around both inside the church and outside in the cemetery. I gave an £10 donation, as it's worth it for the upkeep of this church and it's congregation.

Apologies for the dreadful pun on the Latin tag veni, vidi , vici (I came, I saw, I conquered) but how often do you get the chance to eat your snack while looking on Roman walls? This very pleasant tearoom is attached to the church within the grounds of Portchester Castle. The cakes are home made and I had a very good ploughman's lunch with quiche. The staff are friendly and helpful. Dogs are allowed outside but not inside. Our fox terrier Bracken was given dog treats by the staff unrequested and there are water bowls as well.

Situated right by the castle, this church tea room has both indoor and outdoor seating. It is staffed by volunteers who are all cheery and helpful. The tea is very reasonably priced and comes with an assortment of cake to choose from, and also light lunches are served. Just what the doctor ordered after a hard afternoon's exploring nearby.

Situated in the church tea room inside the castle grounds. The refreshments are very reasonably priced, and ideal for a quick cuppa stop before you wander back around the castle grounds

Came across this tearoom by chance on visiting Portchester castle. Beautiful little church with added tearoom. Manned by volunteers who gave warm, friendly service. Choice of two lovely homemade cakes on our visit, plus usual offers of fresh made sandwiches or ploughman's. Didn't have one but the hot chocolate with marshmallow looked delicious. Sat outside in the sunshine. Lovely way to have a beverage in a peaceful environment. Would recommend

Visited this morning, food was great and the Nutella croissant is very much recommended! Slight mix up on order but picked up and sorted immediately - good location to most hotels

Attended Saturday night quiz. Arrived at 7:00pm. Started with a glass of red wine and Mediterranean platter followed by a to die for cheesecake( all food freshly cooked by Jason ( chef ) and the team. Wolfed the cheese cake down and realised I hadn't took a picture. Had a few more vino's during the quiz along with some banter with Jason and the regular customers. All tables were booked and nice to see a full house. Made a change to the average Saturday night and will certainly do it again. Would recommend to call in prior for some brekky or lunch to book quiz any day before or on Saturday. Quiz moved on quicker than your normal pub quiz which was great with the light banter and no typical interruptions from pub scene. Didn't win the quiz but enjoyed trying.

Our favourite place to come for brunch after football. The team, as always, went above and beyond with the orders for our family (all with different dietary requirements). The boys had the classic big breakfast with local products at a great price. I tried the weekend special eggs Benedict and it was amazing. The boys filled their boots. The girls enjoyed new things. The doorstop toast alone is worth the visit. Sadly, no room for my favourite one the menu - parsnip cake, but the cake-away option meant I could enjoy it later. We brought a friend for their first visit and she was blown away.
