We went for the first time to the St James Bar inside Sofitel Hotel and we loved the atmosphere and the treatment we had received. Gianmarco has been great in asking our preferences and guessing the perfect drink for us. Well done Gianmarco. See you again.

Fab place, really looked after us, not like the Savoy (I’m honestly not bitter 😂). Class establishment, great service but a tad expensive (we did know this but wanted to, and did, celebrate my Mams 75th in style). Initially sat outside in the sunshine where the staff set a parasol for us, however the drinks menus was a little lacking so we asked and were then seated inside - fantastic. Will definitely be back.

Very good service in quite a small restaurant that packs diners in, fairly comfortably. Good for families with kids and especially OAPs with discounts available for certain dishes. We opted for turkey and veg. The one slice of turkey half covered the plate and was surrounded by overcooked vegetables, but the whole thing was swamped and hidden in a deep covering of grey gelatinous gravy! Surely a gravy-boat would be preferable, then you can help yourself! I can still taste that gravy! I guess it was good value at £6 each but I would have preferred less of a soggy mess! I must mention the proprietor who stood behind the counter - he was on his phone conversing about a delivery and was shouting the whole time. We could hear every word. It was intolerable for the diners in his restaurant - we felt very embarrassed for him and the very nice waitress although she's probably used to it. Not good customer service!. The toilets are up a very steep casement, and the staircarpet really needs replacing - years of feet have trodden the carpet black and almost into the wooden stairs. The toilet area need painting - they were not that clean! Very scruffy! In fact other reviewers have described this restaurant as cosy but I would say "cosy/scruffy" is more to the point. PS I can still taste that gravy!!

The St James is a strange place. It was packed out with older members of the community enjoying an inexpensive, but good value, lunch. No alcohol was offered, but the food was excellent, the tea was fresh (not a traditional stewed seaside brew) and with brisk, friendly waiting staff. The fish and chips was exceptional.I am glad our 85-year-old relative remembered eating there - and was able to find it off the seafront and beside the shopping mall.

Firstly the food. I had homemade steak and kidney pie which was perfect, with tinned peas and excellent real chips. Only critisism is when I asked for mushy peas instead I was given a resounding NO. Very shortsighted, I would have happily paid extra and enjoyed my meal that much more. Im now forced to try the neighbouring restaurants in the hope of getting exactly what I want. Diana chose the oap braised steak with veg. Plenty of it and excellent - hence 5 stars for quality and quantity for both. Please chef, stop the intransigence over your peas!!

Just got back from another lovely meal at St. James, we wouldn't go anywhere else. Waitress always recognises us and knows we like a pot of tea. We always choose their steak and kidney pie as we never have this at home. Food very plentiful, well cooked and plates always hot. My wife always makes a special request for roast potatoes instead of boiled potatoes and they are always happy to oblige. Extra milk is also provided for our tea. Staff are always pleasant. Another couple joined us at the table as the restaurant was busy and we found out that we had a lot in common having all been brought up in Bristol. Visited on Friday 12th September for lunch. We spent ages wandering around looking for a decent place to eat and finally spotted the St James Restaurant. We were given a warm cheery welcome and our order was taken promptly. I had plaice, chips and salad and my wife had roast pork and vegetables. The quality was absolutely fine and the price very reasonable, especially as the restaurant did a concession for pensioners. We would not fault it at all and it seems that many other people had the same opinion because the restaurant had filled up with customers by the time we left. Such a shame that Weston Super Mare seems to have a shortage of good places to eat.

St. James's Cafe was reccommended to me by my brother who lives in Worcester and I was visiting him from Manchester. On Tuesday 12th August my brother took a day off work and took myself and his wife to St. James's Cafe. We ordered meals, I ordered a plain chicken dinner with chips and requsted for mushy peas instead of garden peas, the waitress said she would have to ask the chef who said I couldn't have mushy peas with the chicken so my brother offered to pay separately for a portion of mushy peas. When the chicken came it was on the plate on its own covered with gravy, I did ask for plain chicken and the menu didn't state it comes with gravy if it had I would have asked for without gravy, this wasn't mentioned by the waitress when she took the order, nor was it mentioned that this was indeed a roast dinner. When I questioned the waitress called 'Jane' she said "its a roast dinner and you never have a roast dinner without gravy !" but I did ask for it plain and just assumed it would come without gravy . I was advised that I could have another chicken without gravy but I would have to pay for it but at this point my family had already got their meals so I ordered another chicken and paid for it. I did however take a photo of the menu which clearly doesnt state the chicken comes with gravy and the waitress 'Jane' came along and snatched the menu out of my hand and said we were causing trouble and to "eat up pay the bill and get out !!" When I paid the bill a different waitress who was alot friendlier and did try to explain that it came as a roast dinner but as I explained to her I did ask for a plain chicken so would have expected a chicken without gravy. This experience totally ruined and spoilt our otherwise lovely visit to Weston Super Mare but what scares me most is that I have a disabled father and if he were to have been with me that day I would have felt very vulnerable to carry on with our meal with such a bad atmosphere. Eat here with caution if you are not happy with your meal then you need to be wary of the bad tempered waitress and bad attitude of 'Jane' the waitress she totally ruined our meal.

We first stumbled upon this lovely little old fashioned restaurant when we were in Weston-Super-Mare several weeks ago. My wife then had a roast dinner and I had fish and chips. We both said that the quality of the meals and the service was first class. Knowing that we would be back in Weston on 6 July, we promised each other that we would treat ourselves to another tasty meal at St. James' Restaurant on our return. On Sunday 6 July, we arrived in Weston around mid-day and thought we would call at St. James’ for lunch. Unfortunately however, we couldn't quite remember the exact location of the restaurant, but after wandering up and down two or three streets in the area we again stumbled upon this hidden gem. When we went into the restaurant it was absolutely full. The very friendly waitress came up to us as soon as we entered and said she would be able to find us a table straight away as someone was just leaving. She kept her word and gave us a nice table by the window. On this occasion we both went for the OA P Sunday roast, with my wife choosing chicken and me beef. The meals were again absolutely fantastic, as was the service from our lovely and very obliging waitress. The interior of the restaurant is rather dated which, in our opinion, just adds to its charm. A little bit more space in the restaurant would be nice, but, short of reducing the number of tables (ie customers), which in turn would obviously mean an increase to the very competitive prices, there is little that can be done. The old adage says "if it's not broke don't fix it", meaning if something is right don't change it. The management have certainly got it right in the St. James' Restaurant judging by how popular it is. We noted that whilst St.James' restaurant was absolutely full, other restaurants in the vicinity, serving similar meals at similar prices, were almost empty. So please, "don't fix it" - you have obviously got it absolutely right. We called again for lunch at St. James' a little later in the week. On this occasion we both decided on the OAP fish and chip specials. Once again we enjoyed an absolutely fabulous meal served by the same lovely and efficient waitress. Our special thanks to her for making us so welcome and the dining experience so enjoyable. We will certainly be using this great little restaurant every time we visit Weston, and can thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting high quality tasty meals, value for money prices and efficient friendly service. Our thanks to all staff at St. James' for their friendly and efficient service - and of course for the lovely tasty meals.Stewart & Hilary Essex

Fantastic service by David for our beautiful and very tasty wedding cheese cake a couple of weeks ago. All negotiations were by phone or email, so sadly I didn't get to meet David, but he was so helpful with regard to choosing the cheeses and the amount required for the number of guests . David delivered the cheese to the wedding venue personally and absolutely when he said he would. A friend decorated it beautifully with figs, ivy, grapes etc and the guests had a fantastic time eating it! It looked wonderful despite someone - who thought they were helping - cutting the beautiful red rind off the cheddar - which was definitely not supposed to happen! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend David and his wonderful cheese cakes for your wedding - or any other type of celebration. Thank you for an efficient, friendly service.

Had pre-booked a table in advance. Staff didn’t acknowledge me when I walked in, even though I was standing in front of them over the bar. Ended up just sitting down ourselves. We had a big group (10), but had pre booked and were asked to pre order our food, which is fine. But despite that, we didn’t even get our coffees for over an hour. When I asked when they would come, two members of staff basically just shrugged at me and said ‘we are busy’. It’s annoying when they use busy as an excuse when I booked about a month before and pre ordered. Don’t let in more people than you can handle. But it wasn’t even full either. Because it took so long to get our food, the owner offered us our coffees for free. But to be honest, my main issue is how rude and dissinterested most of the staff I interacted with were, and the fact we were made pre order and it made zero difference.

We were met by a very abrupt waitress who made us sit on a table for two, which had other occupied tables located very close to either side of us. There were several other empty tables where we could have sat without invading the existing customers privacy. We did not feel any of the staff were particularly friendly, the food was very over priced, and we took a very dim view of the waitress opening the front door and allowing the cold air into the restaurant on what was a very cold wet day outside. This made most customers feel very uncomfortable. We felt it was like they were saying, “we have had your money, so the quicker you leave now the better”. One customer got up and closed the door, and the waitress immediately went up to the front of the shop and opened the window. For how rudely we were treated, it’s a wonder they had any customers at all. We will not be going back !
