My family and I came here for lunch. Previously we have enjoyed it here before until it shut. Today was the first time after it has reopened. There were 7 of us and we all enjoyed our meal. The service was wonderful, and it was really clean. We will definitely come again, and would highly recommend. Another big factor for me was the cost which I found very reasonable.

Came here for lunch when arriving in Grimsby but couldn’t early check-in at the nearby Holiday Inn Express. Does both takeaway and restaurant service, so I chose the sit down restaurant. Bright and roomy, seats were comfortable although getting to the end of their life and wearing thin, leather perished away. I had the Large Haddock with chips, plus a side of curry sauce, chased down with a latte. Latte was good and, most importantly hot! I hate lukewarm warm coffee! Fish, chips and curry sauce were all of a good size, very fresh and very tasty. Some people may object that the fish was skin on but didn’t bother me. Served there by Charan, who was extremely polite and very friendly. Excellent all round and 100% recommended both for the food, and the staff! Definitely the place to come for fish & chips!

Wish I could give them a minus rating. Ordered 2 vegan sausage meal deals, they gave me 2 vegan sausages but only one chips and sauce (I paid for 2 of everything). Women said on the phone I only paid for one, but if you do the addition it’s clear I paid for 2 of everything. Then to top it off I got given pork sausages instead of vegan ones (found out by biting into it). I definitely ordered vegan as I always triple check. They denied all responsibility and wouldn’t do anything about it, please just stay away!! Absolutely disgusting & need some basic training in customer service, never experienced anything like it tbh, avoid!!!

When ordering at the counter, fish, chips and peas you are automatically given the ‘large’ what you get with this is a small piece of fish, and a large portion of chips, they only have the so-called ‘large’ piece of fish ready at any time, for two servings this cost approx £17:50, not worth it al all

My wife talked me into returning to this outlet despite our 2 previous bad experiences, so i agreed....The queue was large (as was the case at most chip shops on Easter Friday 2020), but when we got home and sat to eat the food it was clear that the chips were undercooked and the batter was very soggy......it seems this may have been the case because they may have been rushing to serve people with what can only be described as very poor quality food.....we were very dissapointed, AGAIN!

I spotted this establishment from the train as I was pulling into Grimsby en route to Cleethorpes recently and decided to pop in for lunch on my return journey. I was not disappointed either. Choosing to dine in, I was greeted by a very friendly and helpful young lady for whom nothing was too much trouble. I opted for the £6.90 fish and chips special with coffee and bread and butter. It really was lovely and I plan to go back before long. I expected to get good fish and chips in Grimsby, the home of that dish, and they really were superb.

In Grimsby for the first time, having taken my son there, from Leicestershire, for a job interview, I wandered about looking for somewhere for lunch. It had to be fish and chips, of course, and I happened upon St. James Fish Restaurant. Upon entering, I was immediately impressed by its cleanliness, and the simple, but modern, interior. It had evidently recently been modernised, and very effective it is. The staff were very welcoming ... a genuine welcome ... and extremely friendly. I ordered the Jumbo Haddock, and a coffee. A fresh pot was made for me; and quite quickly my fish and chips were brought to me. The haddock was massive; I imagine the thing could take your leg off in the wild ... and it was a sublimely beautiful piece of fish. I never thought I could wax lyrical about a piece of fried fish, but in this case, I can. Incredibly fresh, creamy, flaky and utterly delicious, and with a wonderful, crispy tasty batter, with no hint of greasiness about it. It was accompanied by a generous portion of mushy peas, and superb chips. If you are in Grimsby and need an astonishingly good fish and chips, seek this restaurant out. It's a revelation. As I told the staff, I have previously paid twice as much for a piece of fried fish that wasn't half so good. Were it not for the trifling fact that I have to drive 103 miles to get to it, I would be there once a week. To the lovely lady, whose name, I believe, is Eve; and the gentleman behind the restaurant counter, thank you very much for a fish and chip lunch that can put many expensive and fancy restaurants to shame. I hope to eat there again one day.

Went there on Tuesday (22/11/16) for lunch with my partner and her friend. I went for the jumbo haddock which came with chips, peas and a pot of tea for £8.00. The fish was massive and the portion of chips and peas were also supersized. I only managed to eat half of it.My partner had the £5.90 special - haddock, chips, peas, coffee and bread and butter. She too was unable to eat it all (usually there is no waste as we both have healthy appetites). Our friend went for the fishcakes which came with all the trimmings for £5.90. She had assumed that they would be in breadcrumbs but they were battered. This was her only disappointment. The restaurant is very clean and has probably had a recent makeover. Our family have always rated this fish restaurant as the best in town and although it has gone through a few low periods it still excels in the provision of good fish and chips. Atmosphere is nothing great but the quality of food and service more than makes up for that as well as good value for money, £5.90 for the full works including tea and bread! We've tried other places which provide larger portions but for our family quality prevails over quantity. Definitely 4-5 stars for a delicious meal!

Whenever I return to the Grimsby area, where my family were involved in the fishing industry for generations, I look forward to getting some decent haddock. Sadly yesterday's experience at St James' was my worst nightmare. We drove early in the morning from London for my brother's wedding so no time for the Resturant; so I nipped out for takeaway, alas the fish was old and batter like rock my wife and I could not eat it - at least the chops and mushy peas were good!I had asked for a large haddock to share but told it was saved for the Resturant where to be fair we have always had a good meal... But how can they serve such rubbish fish in the takeaway in the fish capital of England?

We've been here many times during our visits to Grimsby. Until our last visit last week I would say this was the best fish and chips around and best value too with the evening daily special meal (choice of fish, chips, peas/salad, tea, bread and butter for just over a fiver). Previously, the fish in the restaurant (admittedly very dated, but last week was in the process of being modernised) was massive, always white and very fresh, and freshly fried to perfection - hence why we always returned. I just don't know why during our last visit last week, we got a manky small piece of haddock with batter more like fat soaked blotting paper - the exact opposite to the usual golden crispy batter we previously always had. It was very poor indeed. At a fiver I didn't think i could complain, but in retrospect I should have ... but the point remains that the fish should not be so poorly prepared in the first place.I'm not sure whether the place has been sold and the new owners have no idea, or whether they had a duff person preparing the fish that night. Whatever, it was a terrible disappointment of a meal we always look forward to. Two stars for now, I'll try again next time we're in Grimsby when I hope they are back to five stars again.

It is right next door to the railway station. Decor inside is very dated, generally clean though the toilets were poor. The food was really cheap though (which explains the decor I guess) - £4.70 for Haddock and Chips and the first was very large. The batter was a little thick for my liking, but for the price not bad.

took two friends visiting from london for fish and chips. The food was excellent and well cooked. The decor looks alittle tired and needs an up grade. we asked the waitress what was the soup of the day she answered " what ever is in the tin" made my friends chuckle.

First time visitor to Grimsby and were hoping to find some good fish and chips. Found this place by accident and gave it a go. Yes the decor and fittings are a tad dated but the fish and chips were excellent and the service was good too.

Like time itself this Restaurant seems to be a main stay of old fishing town Grimsby. Although the food is very well priced and is a reasonable standard, the fixtures and fittings could do with a makeover and bringing up to date. The staff are very pleasant, and if fish is your liking, then this will provide you with a reasonable fish supper at a very realistic price.

Whenever we are up in Grimsby I asked my partner what and where she wants to eat. (She not from Grimsby I left GY 25 years ago). She always come back straight away with Fish in St James. The service is quick the staff are friendly and always have time to have a chat without making costumers wait. Kev n Suzie

On first view the restaurant didn't look much it has a sign advertising how cheap it is and this is against all the other takeaways offering similar deals. Don't believe the others the best fish and value is to be found at the St James. You can takeaway a cracking deal or sit in the restaurant where the menu is a little larger and table service and a cracking cup of coffee.

Whilst visiting family and friends in Gy over new year we found this wee chippy behind the train station and thought (after our disgusting experience at the parity in town) we'd give it a bash, local people running a local chippy (we did not touch the precious things) so you cannae go wrong there, the two kids had nuggets and chips and sausage and chips, my nephew had haddock, chips and mushy peas (not bad for a Spaniard) and I also had the same, as a GY boy I had to, mine was a whale...£6.30 for the lot...magic our morris, Oliver received the normal haddock which cheesed him off a wee bit but still, he loved it. We all had such a great time I returned the day before we travelled back to Scotland with my wee uns and wifey and we all enjoyed it again.Keep up the great work guys, you made our stay memorable...and I gained a stone in weight, magic.

We used to use this place a lot years ago tried it last week, thought it was a very dismal restaurant the whole experience was a total turn off , We both had bad acid all night and it repeated into the next day. Just pleased we had not taken our friends with us.It's a shame as it was the best place in town once ,will not repeat the experience.

From the outside the restaurant does not look great, and indeed upon entering it looks like a throwback to the 80's. However, do not be put off as you will be about to devour some of the best fish and chips you will ever have!If you arrive early you can take advantage of the "twilight special". £4.90 for fish and chips, mushy peas, bread and butter, and a pot of tea! The fish is wonderfully moist and fresh, chips cooked to perfection, all in all a super meal and highly recommended. P.s you access the restaurant through the take away as they are side by side.

Our family have been using thus business for years. However, last weekend we had a huge order for 20 people. We decided to ring the order through a few days before just in case they needed notice for such a large order. The gentleman who took the order was most unhelpful, telling us that we would have to wait our turn when we came to collect. Fair enough, we weren't looking for special treatment. Put his rudeness down to him maybe having a bad day. The tone of his voice was aggressive, rather than what he said. Anyway, Saturday approached and we went to collect our order. Sure enough we were kept waiting, despite having said we'd be there at 4.30pm. We were greeted with angry face and once the large order had been completed, the gentleman said "amen" in a very rude way. Consequently, they have now lost our custom and we will never buy from this business again.

Excellent food. Really tasty and served with a smile. It was nice to sit in and look over to the beach. Ideal location if you're waiting for a train too.
