Great quiz, very well delivered with some great pints! Shame I didn't win though :( I would recommend this for a pub quiz or quiet lunch pint.

Really good food (had the roast dinner)and cosy atmosphere. Staff very nice and welcoming.

Perfect location even middle of no where but still next to a cool place great for a walk. A lot of tourist and hikers approach this area to enjoy. Anyhow had a drink before start my walk. Service was good so far and they were serving local ales which were not bad either. Plenty of seats inside but i prefer to sit out to enjoy the view.

Very helpful Staff, and good lunch at a good price. One of our party who had a food allergy also enjoyed a good meal! Thankyou.

Cosy, dog-friendly, child-friendly, right on the edge of amazing countryside, a mecca for outdoorsy and sporty people - it offers just so much!! Love it, and I've been coming here for years for lunch on a Saturday!

Attended a private function at the Sportsman yesterday. Tamsin and the team were brilliant. Enough home produced food and more for those who attended. Service was exceptional. Ample car parking and set in beautiful countryside. Can't recommend highly enough.

Absolutely lovely. We visited on a Wednesday lunch and wasn't disappointed. The food was lovely and such good value for money. I used to think the food was nice, but its gone up two notches. Great job. We'll definitely be back. The atmosphere was really lovely too. The lasagne was unreal 👌

Very good food and great quiz …. Gone back after new owners took over and each time food has been lovely with good portions . Pub had been decorated and de cluttered - a modern twist !!!!! Quiz is still great !!!!

Went for tea with my family. The menu was basic but that’s fine. We were looking for good food at a reasonable price. It was on first look a bit overpriced but unforgivably most of our meals were cold. The lasagne was very cold in places. What made things worst was the response by the ‘chef’. He indicated that he’d tried a warmer piece of the lasagne and said it was fine but would give us a refund! We were left with a cold lasagne and therefore no meal for my sister. Really poor. £15 for cold Lasagne! I had to write this review to prevent others making the same mistake. The bar staff were great and you get the sense that they were aware of how bad the chef was. Please stay away unless you are just eating crisps!!

Brilliant place, great service, amazing food and a very warm welcome by the landlords. Friendly staff, clean toilets and a massive beer garden. Look forward to visiting again soon.

Called in after a walk through the Fox Hagg nature reserve. Had a great pint glass of beer. Friendly bar staff , ordered fish and chips it was very good and the perfect size .toilets very clean. 10 out of 10.

Good service and pleasant atmosphere. We didn't eat so I can't comment on the food. A good selection of beers including Oakham Citra. I love that beer! Plenty of parking and spacious outdoor seating with an airy marquee if you prefer to not sit in the sun. I'd recommend The Sportsman.

Been for lovely walk and stopped here for lunch. Not local, lovely pub. Friendly, spotless and clean. Excellent pub food, great value. Stunning view of Sheffield . Absolutely worth dropping by.

The Sportsman hosted a wonderful party for me and my wife's 50th birthday celebration. Tamsin & James organised things well and provided a large marquee complete with decorations to give us plenty of outside space. The curry and chili provided for our guests was excellent! The staff were all attentive. Everything was great.

Recently re opened by a local couple. Some decent beers and the food is very good.

Myself, my family and lots of our friends arrived in the pub at 1pm (spent a fortune from 1pm-8pm) we waited over an hour for food which was cold. Rude manager who didn’t appreciate feedback. Wouldn’t recommend

Lovely pub, views outside are beautiful if weather is decent, and comfy inside if not. Good variety of food with few good options for kids meals which is always a plus!

We went for Tuesday quiz night. What a great atmosphere - quiz had a great variety of questions and was pitched at just the right level (no one got them all right but it wasn't so hard that no one could get any!). Quiz master James was excellent. The food was lovely, just what you need after a hard day.

This has always been a great pub with breathtaking 360 views across the stunning surrounding countryside. But since the new managers took over, it has moved into a different league to suit the needs of its different customers. From wine and gin tasting evenings, to quiz nights and morning coffee/cakes there is something for everyone. The food menu is simple and extremely good (best chips around) and a great selection of wine, beers and spirits. Service is relaxed, friendly and efficient. And a great beer garden for when the sun comes out...

Great pub with great views, lovely staff and owners. Also very dog friendly with treats for our 4 legged friends. If you want food and drink or just a casual drink come to the Sportman. Great to pop in after a dog walk, for Sunday lunch or an evening drink. Would really recommend it.

Sorry to see Timothy Taylors Landlord not on the bar. It had been a staple for many years and underlined the pubs standards of quality and authenticity.

A million of us turned up with no notice and the very friendly staff and chef sorted us all out for food. Really great people!

I gave the food 3 stars because i didnt eat so unable to review. Service very slow they seem a bit chaotic. Atmos great outside but inside dark and dingy. Google doesnt ask for valie for money but they are charging at least £2.00 more per pint than Crookes - insane pricing. We had one and very quickly left feeling robbed.

Nice place, nice pub food, nice staff and service. Big, fat chips and proper pies with pastry all the way around. Beer kept really well. Lovely.

Recently reopened under new ownership and very good indeed. It’s a pity the 3 Merry Lads has gone (all boarded up and concrete block barriers across the car park) but great to see the Sportsman back

Absolutely awful ! Wanted to order 2 x Bac,sos and egg , no eggs. So I ordered a cheeseburger, chicken burger and cheese&chips. 2 meals came out then 5 mins later the other one came out, the bread cakes must be 6 inches and the (economy)burger was about 2 inches ended up ripping most of the bread off and leaving it, to top it off the chips were cold! the chicken burger wasn't even a burger it was just 2 small lumps of chicken. The worst meal I've ever paid for.

Good to see the place open again. First few days so just getting off the ground. Warm welcome, good homemade soup - decent keg selection, cask coming on over the next few days. Good luck!

If you like a peaceful bite to eat and a nice quiet drink and lovely friendly staff then this is a great place to go.

We regularly enjoy a great value, great tasting Sunday lunch at the Sportsman pub, Lodge Moor. It's a carvery and there is plenty of choice. The food is delicious and service is great, with a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. We walk up with our two dogs and it's dog friendly. Great pub, recommend it for a Sunday lunch.

A visit to this pub is a total must ... dog friendly ... food is to die for .. freshly cooked and we enjoyed every mouthful . Definitely coming again for sure !!

Lovely friendly pub, decent food and very dog friendly

We found the Sportsman for lunch today- we sat outside with the lovely views as we took our dog with us. We both had a very hearty beef lasagne, salad and chips - all homemade and delicious. The staff were all friendly and prompt with serving our meal and clearing away - our dog was even given a treat - would recommend

We often visit the sportsman. Always a friendly greeting from the staff, and the carvery on Sunday is absolutely spot on. A great spot to have a pint outside in warmer weather too, with amazing views. One of Sheffields finest pubs, and I should know, as I've been to most of them....

Found this little gem by chance, whilst driving home on a Sunday afternoon. Friendly staff and the foods amazing. We had carvery on our first visit and we've been back every Sunday since.

First time going lovely place to sit chat and have a drink plus the bounce of the food which I haven't tested yet but will do next we visit

Sunday lunch always good as is the Steak and Stilton pie! Home cooking at it's best. Staff friendly and efficient.

Lovely little pub with fantastic views and excellent menu Our meals we’re really good. However the bar man was more interested in watching football and drinking beer than he was in customer service SO RUDE. We wasn’t the only party to pass comment on his excessive drinking and bad attitude while working. Management need to be made aware!!! He will cost you custom

Food very good quality and quantity. Cutlery not clean. Man serving was very pleasant and helpful. Woman behind bar was snappy and unhelpful. Perhaps she was having a bad day.

1st visit after a lovely local walk, sat outside looking across the field with hubby and the 2 pooches- stunning view. Ordered a cider and decided to order the carvery. Option of 3 meats OR ALL 3. Why not?! Absolutely delicious. The best ! Really friendly staff and cliental. Will definitely be heading back 👍 thank you. !

I visited the Sportsman pub today 29.8.21 for a Sunday Carvery with my wife and two children and it was absolutely amazing. We all enjoyed it. We have never been to this pub before. If you like home cooked, tasty, delicious food I highly recommend the sportsman Pub. The Sportsman is amazing, the staff are amazing, the price is amazing with plenty of parking. The views are amazing. I gave it 5 starts because thats the limit on here when it deserves 100 stars.Please go and have a Carvery at the Sportsman, you will not be disappointed 👌

We stopped here while out walking our friends dog, and am glad that we did. The staff made us feel welcome, and even had a few treats for the dog! I had a lovely home made gluten free lasagne, though couldn't get a cranberry juice to go with it! Not a problem though as the lasagne was that good.

You will not find a better higher quality Sunday lunch anywhere. And in the current circumstances you won't find anyone better organised over serving it to you. Incidentally the food is also excellent during the week.

Having called in for a lunchtime drink a couple of weeks' before, the helpfulness of the waiter encouraged us to amend a planned walk for a large group and make this a lunch stop. We booked by phone a couple of days' beforehand. The service was good and the staff friendly and helpful. Everyone mainly ordered toasted sandwiches with salad and chips and we thoroughly enjoyed these.

My 5 friends and I who were all Asian went to celebrate the end of our hike around 3 PMon 30.05.21. We sat down and was greeted by a male waiter who took our orders and then proceeded to say, "I hope you're not the type of group to pay separately and not all together. Just one of you pay and then divide it amongst yourselves later." This felt quite assuming and confrontational. We appreciated that he was probably very busy but it removed our ability to choose to pay seperately if we wanted to and felt like it was a difficult position that he had put us in despite us being customers at this pub. We begrudgingly accepted. He later brought out drinks and my friend noticed that one of the pint glasses were not clean and had a red stain. My friend notified the male waiter of this and he grabbed my friend's pint glass aggressively and quickly began to empty it right next to our bench, with no concern that while he is doing this, he is getting my friend's bag and jacket wet. He then says that it would be qui cker for someone to replace the lemonade pint and asked someone to do this. All of us were shocked at his behaviour and felt very uncomfortable at this pub where we are meant to relax and enjoy our meal that we paid for as customers. A short while later, I notice a Caucasian young couple in their 30s with the mum dressed in a blue beautiful dress holding her baby on her lap. They asked the same male waiter for drinks. The male waiter brought their drinks and accidentally poured a whole pint of beer on the lady with the baby on her lap. He immediately expressed his apologies and goes back into the pub to replace the pint of beer. The lady said that it was okay and that her baby was not wet. She grabs some wipes from her bag and tried to clean herself. The waiter comes back with replacement pint of beer and a complementary drink. From this sight, we were all shocked at what happened and visibly realise how stressed and agitated this male waiter must be. Our food arrived and we noticed that on 3 of our plates there were hair. My friends, as a result of the aggressive behaviour shown from the male waiter to us, felt fearful of what would happen if we were to bring to his attention the hair on our plate, especially with his behaviour to the Caucasian couple, we anticipated that his reaction to us might be a lot worse considering we're Asian and we also didn't want to bring any more attention to us. This upset me that we were in this position considering that the hair on our plates were a massive red flag for adherence to food and hygiene regulations. Including that we felt too uncomfortable to speak up despite us being customers and us just trying to enjoy just finishing of our hike. It is to add that our experience here wasn't completely negative as a lady at the pub was quite cheerful and welcoming and helped us in the right direction for our hike and opened the toilet for us to use. As a future recommendation to improve service, if a member of staff is stressed/overworked or agitated, for them to either take a break, refuse more customers from booking or close the pub earlier so that the stress that an invidual might feel is not extended to customers that would like to be in a calming enjoyable environment. In this situation, I rather they had said that there was no other bookings available and my friends and I would have found somewhere else to enjoy our food that go through the stress and feelings of uncomfort that we experienced.

A trip to Sheffield to meet up with my son studying at Uni, I wanted a pub lunch just out of the city. I booked this pub based on reviews on this site and wasn’t disappointed. Jane was lovely, really friendly and made us feel very welcome. Great menu choice ( I’m vegetarian) with something for everyone, my son had the burger, which he enjoyed, mum had the roast pork bap, she thought it was brilliant, very generously filled! I has the veggie lasagne- delicious! Thanks to the chef Lee! We were outside and the weather was drizzly but under cover, so not a problem ! We will be back!

The landlady was incredibly rude! She refused to let me use the toilet even though I assured her we would be coming for food after our walk. The way she spoke in front of customers was very unprofessional and she acted as if I asked her for a piggy back.

Went here for a meal on Saturday night, how fabulous was this find! What a great pub with a wonderfully welcoming landlady! Social distancing was fantastic and everyone abided by this! Felt incredibly safe and at ease here and will definitely be making this our local when staying at Fox hagg farm campsite. All round brilliant finds for a brilliant weekend!

Had a drink here a few weeks ago - before lockdown. Great for kids as it has a huge open field, the staff are lovely and considering the size the drinks selection is super. Hope they reopen!

Nice menu of traditional pub grub and some specialties. Really needs a few bob spending on it. Quite dated and worn. A pub dog that bites isn't too helpful.

We visited here and had a fantastic sunday carvery.. we were in our motorhome and asked if we could park overnight in the carpark and they very kindly obliged free of charge.. before going here we tried the three merry lads across the road and were told we would have to pay 15 pounds to s tay in the carpark and an extra 4 pounds for electric hook up.. after spending around 50 pounds in the sportsman I think the three merry lads have lost out on our custom.. thank you sportsman for your very kind hospitality...

Just visited this cosy pub, and had a Sunday carvery. A very welcoming atmosphere, couldn't do enough for us. The food was excellent.

I can walk there from home! The food is home-cooked style fare (not available Mondays) and the atmosphere is local pub style, warm and friendly.

A group of 12 (2 vegetarian) called in for Sunday carvery last week. £8.95 for a large meal and the portions are HUGE! Really cosy pub, Great atmosphere, we enjoyed being here and stayed till the very end. The hostess was super nice and we had a wonderful evening. The food was delicious, we enjoyed it very much. Lovely locals, they gave us good recommendations about what to do in the area. So we visited "Stanedge", so beautiful but don't get lost! (will save you a lot of walking and sour feet). Thanks a lot for the nice evening, when we are ever close again we will definitely visit again!

Been coming to this pub for at least the last 40 years, altho not as frequently as I’d like to. Great food and drinks, good prices, stunning scenery and always a very warm welcome. The Sportsman caters for all dietary needs, is dog and kid friendly, as well as wheelchair accessible. It’s the perfect place to visit at the end of a country walk!

Nice atmosphere and half decent coffee. Lovely view from the carpark across the valley. Bet this place would be excellent on a cold winters afternoon for a warm and a glass of what ever.
