We went to Spices as we fancied a curry and we were not disappointed. The food was superb and so yummy. In fact, we couldn't eat it all and the waiter kindly put what we left in a takeaway box, which we had for lunch the next day. Would definitely go again when visiting Saltburn.

We visited quite late and the restaurant was empty. I chose king prawn madras with mushroom rice and onion bhajee and it was fine, but nothing special. My wife can't remember the name of the dish she chose, but she didn't enjoy and left most of it, hence the poor rating.

This curry house doesn’t cope with being busy(ish) . Probs half to two thirds full and the service and quality of food really falls . Undercooked bhajis and doughy breads . All felt rushed . Everything also starts to taste sweeter ?!? Weird . I see others have mentioned it, but it was noticeable between visits . Normally decent place - 7-10 But when busy it’s drops to a 3/4-10 quickly.

We have just been to Spices for my sons 18th birthday, a party of 11. We waited around 1.5 hours before recieving our starters. This was after many other people were served that came in after us. When we finally recieved our mains we were very disappointed. The tikka masala was far too sweet, there was hardly any meat. Even the rice was a tiny portion. The nanna's were brought way after the mains which meant we were waiting letting it go cold so we could eat it together. All in all it was very poor & I would not recommend it especially considering the price. First & last time.

Fabulous food, service, great evening out, but HOW.? MUCH.? SUGAR.? is the chef putting in meat dishes ??? Diabetes nightmare. I've heard they try to make their dishes for the British palate but this was like chicken or fish puddings. We don't like it!! Thank heavens for the dal, which was tasty, savoury, as it should be. Such a shame they have made everything SO SICKLY SWEET.

Must have been an off night (Monday) one waiter was very nice the other just wanted you to eat and leave. I found the food not as good as other places but not the worst I have had. I suppose what put us off was 2 of the 4 poppadom's were stale - soft, so that put us off, the cooling yogurt dip had spice in it so too spicy for me and the onion salad had an odd taste to it too. The pawn on pruri was the best I have ever had it was beautifully presented and tasted divine, the rest of the dishes were ok, not bad but have had better. As I say it was a Monday night

19/8/22 Friday evening meal We three middle aged guys from London were touring the area and decided to have a Friday curry as we usually do in London. I looked up TA and found this place the best in the area. We arrived at 21:26 on a Friday night to find a sparsely populated smart restaurant. We decided to stay and took a seat in the bay window in the hope that others may be drawn to a busy looking restaurant. A group of four women having a quiet night out was near us. They enjoyed themselves and on leaving later pledged to return. We declined the offer of papadams and ordered the main courses with a few sides. As pescatarians there were two fish dishes and all the options came as a King Prawn which were are not too keen on. We ordered a main each and shared about four sides, a rice and naan bread. A pint of cobra each to wash it down with was also ordered. The drinks came quickly and the food to a while, despite the lack of customers, but we were not in a hurry. By 22:00 the dishes were being delivered. The Macher Johl (Fish curry) sauce was very similar to Akachi Mach (whole piece of pan fried Fish) but with mustard seeds. We had no idea of what the fish was, probably tilapia. My fish was not a whole fish as I expected but two large pieces of soft fish. The waiter had said something about its being too soft and we would not like it (!) but we did not understand what he was talking about! The Vegetable Biryani was asked for as spicy but came out not spicy but still tasty and was quite stongly spiced with cumin. My friend said it was obviously not made with frozen vegetables. The Kasmir Pilau Rice wash was lightly fried and had pineapple in it! ... interesting The Cauliflower, Aubergine, Paneer & chickpeas curry side dishes were all tasty and piping hot. The Plain Naan was noted as being soft, fluffy and quite nice. Despite its being a Friday at 10pm the restaurant was not at all busy whilst the trendier places were packed out with youngsters. We finished by 22:30, leaving nothing behind. The bill arrived without our asking and it was a reasonable £68.45 which we paid for by card and left a £7 tip. This was taken by yet another waiter as we had had about five so far attending to our needs! I hope they all got a share! We left sated and content to have a late night stroll around the town.

We’ve done trip to Saltburn many times on the train for something different as night out. Great drinks before in the Alexander then on to Spices for 7.40 ,the 4 of us arrived spot on our booking time and were quickly seated and offered drinks and menus. Few tables occupied giving a good feel to restaurant. We ordered probably within 10 minutes after chatting and making our choices no starters just popodums and pickles then main courses with rice and various nans. Another table arrived after we’d ordered (2) and after about 40 minutes we were getting very hungry and saw this table of 2 being served, which annoyed us and we then asked the waiter just where was our food. It will be with you soon.. must have been another 5 -10 minutes and it arrived all piping hot. The food was absolutely delicious we all unanimously agreed our dishes were perfect. I’d have left 5 stars as apart from the wait it was 100% spot on which is a shame. $64,000 question will we return …….absolutely.

Visited here with two couples ensuring we were adhering to government guidelines and were shown to a long table isolated from other people. Perfect. The polite waiter wearing PPE gave us a small leaflet takeaway menu to look at and we ordered drinks. The menu was printed so small that we all struggled to read it however a waiter did allow us to read from their main menu as even the courtesy reading glasses provided didn't help. The poppadoms tasted fresh but the dips were plain. No taste at all which was disappointing. My vegetarian samosa starter with tiny bit of iceberg was bland too. I felt like I was eating cardboard.I ordered a side dish of curry as don't like big portions but in hindsight, that wouldn't have been a problem.Other couples enjoyed theirs but agreed that the chef plays it safe with the actual spices and would've preferred them hotter. At the end of the meal, a thick, lined notebook was given to us with a covid infested pen with the instructions of writing all our names and mobile numbers for Track and Trace. The restaurant is clearly following guidelines however GDPR is totally disregarded as we all knew everyone's private details and could've even removed pages had I so wish. This definitely needs rethinking. Was the restaurant clean? YesHelpful and polite staff? YesAuthentic cuisine? NoBitterly disappointed as had high hopes.

We had heard good things about this restaurant so thought we would give it a try. Unfortunately we were left disappointed. Slow to serve, no non alcoholic drink at all. Had to go to the shop when I ordered black currant and soda! We ordered 8 popadoms and only got 5. The servers have no idea how to serve food correctly. Serving food from the nearest end of the table and leaning over trying to stretch to put your plate down and not quite managing getting it down in place. Food itself was standard, nothing particularly bad to say but I couldn’t say anything we had was lovely. The final straw to spoil the night was a few loud mouth idiots who came in and no one of the staff asked them to quiet down. Poor service.

I have visited this restaurant before and it was OK. On this occasion when the bill arrived the waiter took my credit card and carried out a contactless payment that left me very annoyed as he had not asked if I wanted a contactless payment. I asked him to reverse the payment so I could use a PIN to complete the payment but he claimed this was not possible. He became very angry when I advised him the he is not permitted to make contactless payments without the customers authorisation. He could not understand why I was not happy with he's behaviour and made no attempt at an apology. This situation was embarrassing because the restaurant was quite busy but he returned with my bill and receipt and flounced away like a child and I left the premises. I will not return to this place again. This person really needs to have a much better approach when dealing with customers.

Before I retired I travelled all over the UK and lunch with clients was invariably at an Indian Restaurant so, over the years, I must have been to well over 100.There are many specialist restaurants in big cities but most in the UK can be classified as Bangladeshi. The one advantage here is that if you pick, say, two starters, two mains and two deserts from one restaurant and then go into another and order the same items they will, on the whole, be the same, There will, of course, be variations but generally speaking there will be as many similarities as differences.Having recently moved to Redcar I decided to book a table for 5 at Spices when we had family visiting, just to see if there were more similarities or differences and the results were varied!I did the booking online and that was very efficient, I booked a table for 6.30pm. When we arrived the immediate impression was very good - the place looked clean and tidy with tables set out nicely; the staff were very pleasant and immediately pointed out our table and it even "smelled" as I expected! Our drinks were served promptly and our order taken by a very pleasant young man - from there it went downhill! Each of us ordered a different chicken dish with Samosas, Onion Bhajis; Pilau Rice, Nan Bread and Tarka Dall. When the food came we all had the same opinion: the Onion Bhajis and Samosas were somewhat on the small side although the Nan Bread was fine. The chicken dishes, however, all seemed to suffer from the same fate - they were very bland and could only be described as tasting quite sweet, not all that nice. The Pilau Rice was also slightly sweet and the Tarka Dall also quite bland and didn't have that good garlic "kick".I suppose one could say that the dishes were not bland but "delicately flavoured" but after eating in as many Indian Restaurants as I have, sorry, bland and too sweet! The restaurant itself is very nice and pleasant but I don't think I will be going back until they put a little more ooomph into the food and take some of the sugar out!

I was looking forward to my visit and first impressions were good. Nice ambience and pleasant, helpful and attentive staff. Let me say from the outset that the rest of my group enjoyed their meals so this is just a review of my choices. After popadums and dips, I chose Kakra Purée for my starter, which was supposed to contain minced Crab. However I could perceive no taste of the sea within this dish so it was, for me, just spicy potato. My main course selection was Newrabi Ran which was Lamb shank in a spicy sauce and I ordered plain rice and vegetable Naan to accompany it. The Lamb was advertised as being cooked for hours so I was expecting a very tender, fall off the bone sort of dish like the Greek dish 'Kleftiko'. Unfortunately, the Lamb was tough, sinewy and rather difficult to separate from the bone. I might have been able to cut it better if I had been provided with a steak knife but the cutlery was just standard kitchen kit. While my group were happy with their choices, I guess I'll just have to stick with my old fallback Dupiaza in future.

Went for a meal at spices Indian, Saltburn-by-the-Sea at the weekend with friends and still the very best. Poppadoms with pickle tray to start, freshly cooked warm and crisp as they should be. Starters were onion bahjis, a mixed starter, meat samosas and a king prawn purée all of wish were delicious in flavour and freshness. Mains were 2 chicken tikka balti Burma’s, lamb balti Bhuna and chicken tikka jalfrezi, mushroom pilau, keema pilau, plain rice and 3 Nanns a keema garlic chilli a cheese onion and coriander and a peshwari. All the food is first class in spice and flavour. The nann breads are in my opinion the best. The staff are amazing very friendly. Please give spices a try I’m sure you will love it as much as we do. We go quite a lot as it is the best. Well done to Babul and the team. See you soon.

Tasty starters and mains and very good service indeed. The happy hour deal of starter, main and coffee or desert is good value. They also do takeaway.

+Staff very attentive, maybe a bit to attentive at times, wanting to remove our plates before everyone had finished. Meal was nice and a reasonable price, but the drinks were expensive.

First time visit, last minute decision, was not disappointed. Everything we had was delicious, we opted for the early bird menu, onion bhajis were light and tasty, had the lamb kalia dish which was amazing, fragrant and a delight. Finished with coffee (you could have ice cream if you want) even that was delicious. Staff are warm and friendly and very attentive. All in all a throughly enjoyable meal, will definitely be going back for more. Well done Spices it was a pleasure eating in your restaurant.

Been going here over 20 years. THE BEST CHICKEN KORMA on the planet! Tried most indians in the area nothing comes near to the cottage! Even the big names like Akbars etc. They even do customized rices i get fried onion pilau which is so tasty and delicious. Compliments the korma so well. Never got sick of it in two decades so that tells you how good it is.

Walked in at 10.30pm on a Friday evening and asked for a table for 4, jabba the hut who was on duty this evening did not seem to be so accommodating and promptly told us they were shutting in 45 minutes. No offer of a table or option to order quickly just a blank look. She/it then went to liaise with a more senior member to ask if we could eat there. It still never actually conversed with us to confirm if eating in a restaurant was feasible or not! Needless to say we walked out never to return, shame as the food looked and smelt really good!
