Spice Venue in County Durham

Wow, I've lived here for two years so why have I only just discovered this absolute gem! This is the best Indian food we've eaten outside of India....EVER. None of the pasty yellow, greasy raw spices that you get from the usual Westernised Indian restaurants. This was authentic cuisine. Piping hot, marinaded well, tasty delicious food. Service was fantastic too. Indian families dining here is a sure indication that this food is good! We will be back without a doubt.

Well this place is called Spice Venue but there was little spice evident in the meals we had tonight. We had Bhuna Prawn on Puri to start with, then Chicken Tikka Rogan and Naan then Brinjal Bhaji aubergine but they were all bland. In fact I suspect whatever you ordered it would all taste the same. The poppadoms were fine!

My husband ordered our food but it arrived oner an hour and a half late. It was almost cold and despite ordering medium to hot dishes, they were as mild as baby food. We won't be using this establishment again.

I generally make my own curries from onions I grow in the garden and spice them up from chilies and peppers I've grown in my greenhouse. However, when I am absolutely knackered at the end of the day at a weekend the Spice Venue is the place I go for my (and my families) curries. I generally get madras and it has always been spot on with little variation in quality. I never feel the need to add extra spice as it is always just the right heat. The Vindaloo is good too. I would definitely recommend Spice Venue since the amount of preparation can be tasted in the base sauce of any of their curries. I've had curries from other places where there has clearly been no fusion of ingredients or car taken with the preparation of sauces, hence this is my go-to place for a curry. Nice.

Food very good really recommend good money all hot and staff all good when ordering all way on time

Food good. Delivery service very poor. Only ordered for delivery twice and both times waited over 2 hours. They need their own driver(s). Food only warm too.

first takeaway meal there for a long time, in my opinion the meal ordered was only average . I have had better meals from other local indian takeaways in the consett area . needless to say I will not be going back there again. the spice venue used to be one of the top takeaways in the area

This was the first time I have ordered from Spice Venue after abandoning my previous go-to Indian takeaway. I was very impressed and very happy with our food. Warm, friendly greeting on entry into lovely waiting area. Good sized portions of delicious food. And the price was sensible and fair, considering so many are charging so much these days. Even found a Christmas card in our bag :) This will be our favourite place to buy from, from now on.

Really bad food last two times. Shame as used to be nice and dependable. Not sure if Spice venue has been taken over but I’ll not be returning. Onion rice was raw, naan breads weren’t cooked, chicken shahe was split… Contacted the venue but weren’t very impressed by response.

Absolutely superb food. Prawn Vindaloo was excellent, the perfect amount of spice, loads of sauce and plenty of prawns. The best I've had...and I'm an inveterate Prawn Vindaloo eater! The icing on the cake, as it were, was the supreme Tarka Dhal. So many I've had are bland, but this was fabulous. Wonderfully garlicky with a delicious tarka topping it off. Since discovering this place I've never wanted to order from anywhere else. And I just keep coming back. The quality is top notch every time.

tonight was the first time iv ever ordered from here, I went inside as its only around the corner from me, the staff were very polite, the take away inside is lovely & clean & the food was impeccable, the best Indian food iv had in a long while, ill 100% be back again & defiantly recommend

I have just eaten the best curry in my whole life👌it was a chicken jalfrezi ! Honestly I can't believe how nice it was! Curries are my favourite food of choice and that one was the best ever🙌🙌🙌Thanks you so much and I look forward to my next 1

Ordered a takeaway this evening and something is very wrong with the kitchen tonight. The salt added to three of the dishes has made it inedible. I’ve rang to discuss the issue to be told next time I order ring them and they will give me some free dishes. That doesn’t help tonight or with any guarantee I get the same person who has any recollection. No offer to resolve this evening and no chance I will be going back again. First time I’ve ever had food from anywhere that was genuinely inedible and no refund or replacement food, very disappointing.

If your on a diet portion sizes are good. But if your not no good, good job we did our own rice.

The Spice Venue makes the best Madras I have tasted in decades. The food and service is excellent, and I would highly recommend.

Ordered a take away last night, delivery was spot on and the food was delicious.

First time in months I have had a curry from what used to be my favourite takeaway, 110% gone down hill, food was bland had no taste chicken was like rubber and garlic nan was like microwaved sale bread, rice was tasteless like uncle bens or something only good part was the chips and the driver was very polite next time I will get a Chinese

On Friday the 12th June me and my wife ordered a takeaway from here and was a very generous portion and very tasty just wanted to write a review to thank our takeaway driver he was a very polite gentleman and we had a problem with our front door and it was no problem to him even though he had to walk around the back up a muddy filed but was no problem to him and was very kind and polite about it great service thank you

Good food at a good price rare in Oxford

We ate here last Saturday evening with friends and family, a table of 5. The drinks order was taken and they were served quickly. Food was ordered from their amazing menu and arrived again in good time. The food quality is always good here with all meals being cooked to order. Sometimes because of this there may be a bit of a delay at busy times but I'd rather wait a little for great food rather than eat from a vat of pre made sauce...each to his own I suppose. All in all great food and service in a local restaurant...what's not to like!

First time I have ordered food from here and it will be the last. Disgusting Indian food, tasted awful, very little meat and terrible quality. Definitely one to avoid.

Gorgeous meal in nice surroundings with attentive, pleasant staff at a reasonable price. What more could you want? Will definitely be back to try other dishes.

Apart from having to come to bar to order our end of meal coffees;it was very tasty and good quality and ample amounts. It was getting busier by time we were leaving so I can understand the service taking a little longer! We would recommend, although one waiter found it difficult to understand our simple request for an extra side dish to be added to our order!!

Went post Xmas to have something different and spicy. Mum in law, wife and I had variations on king prawn. Mine was spicy, others were tandoor. We had a naan with side dishes. They all tasted superb . The service was swift and pleasant. The owner stopped by and we had a good chat about his establishment. I found the bill to be good value. Would I go again, yes.

We are absolutely disgusted with the service we have received tonight. We ordered through Just Eat at 6.45pm and was confirmed for delivery around 20.40pm. We have waited till 9pm no food We called the restaurant as they have our ordered with an email to comfirn delivery is on route. The lady we spoke with was no help at all. She told us this is not the responsibility or the restaurant or there problem, spice venue only have only have 1 delivery driver, Just Eat are not reliable to use they make up the times, it's a Saturday night, it will be another 30 mins. Well that 30 mins has been and gone. Its now 10pm no food at all.

Absolutely Delicious! My husband and I are from the USA and we’re staying nearby two nights, and after stopping in our first night, my husband recommended we go again the next night. We got the Chicken Tikka Malaya (I cant remember spelling but it was a creamy sauce with banana and pineapple). It was very sweet and not what I expected, but loved it. Additionally we ordered the Chicken Tikka Dahnsak (again, not right spelling, but it was considered a spicy dish with pineapple). It was not too spicy for us, in fact it was perfect for my delicate taste palette. Rice was excellent and the naan was great dipped in the curries. Great service as well although we did takeout.

I looked for an Indian restaurant close to the Empire theatre for a pre- Concert in Consett meal, and found Spice Venue. It was a Friday night and advertised as being open at 6pm, but seemed to be open earlier than that. I had a lovely starter after a couple of papadoms with the pickle tray. Sad to say, I can't actually remember what it was called, but it was served on a sizzler and had a covering of cooked cheese on it. I have never seen this dish in another restaurant, and if you can find it on their menu from the description, I do recommend it. My mains was a flavoursome Chicken Tikka Ceylon with mushroom pilaw rice. It was a good sized portion, and the sauce mopped up with a garlic naan. This was all washed down with the customary cold pint of Cobra. I thoroughly enjoyed this meal in pleasant surroundings. The staff were friendly, quick, but not intrusive, exactly right. The previous week I had eaten at a restaurant in Workington and paid £35 for a meal whose only difference had been an extra glass of lemonade. Here was £10 cheaper. Great value. I will definitely return.

I ordered a take away. I received a Chicken tikka Jalfrezi, not the chicken jalfrezi that I ordered.I accepted this anyway.A small portion in a lot of watery scoldingly spicey sauce.I couldn't finish it.It was an ordeal.My friend ordered a Chicken tikka karai which was indistinguishable from my meal.My friend comes from Bradford and is accustomed to a very high standard of indian food. However this was disgusting.I would like to give it a negative number of stars but as this is not possible I have given an undeserved one!

The best in the area by far. Not overpriced and the staff are very helpful. I recommend the house specials, the lamb jalfrezi and the tandoori mixed grill.

The Korma sauce was like water, but also hot!! not a korma when it states mild on the menu.

It was our first time trying Spice Venue. After many good reviews we decided to give it a go. My husband had the madras which he does like hot but he couldn't eat it as it was too spicy. I'm a bit boring and I ordered a Korma, however this was also too spicy. At first I thought it was the pilau rice which had a little kick but after eating more I realised the korma was infact very warm!! I got my husband to try it and even he was surprised how spicy it was.(He often takes the Mick out of me on my lack of ability to eat spicy food) The sauce itself was very runny. Sadly I'm disappointed. Had the sauce been a bit thicker, a little sweeter and not spicy this review would have been far different.

The food was O.K. but nothing to make it stand out amongst others. My husband ordered the 'meat feast', however, I personally would not call 5, yes 5 pieces of bite sized meat a feast. My meal was supposed to come with a salad and a mint and a chilli sauce. These did not materialise at any point during the meal, I had a lamb dish. When this was pointed out to the manager we were informed...exact words "it does not matter because they are complimentary and free from the house". He was very rude and defensive. Instead of admitting there had been a mistake and apologising. Word of mouth is a very powerful thing. He did not seem phased in the slightest when I told him my review would be negative. Certainly won't be going back there again!

we used to eat a lot here when we first moved to Consett but stopped after a while but couldn't remember why, but after we had a take away tonight I remember why it was absolute rubbish, starter Butterfly prawn, what you get is literally 1 prawn the basics, main tikka king prawn and a nan bread 8 prawns and a nan bread that was only good for blackening a chalk board it was so burnt in total £17 but this is not the worst of it when I phoned to complain about the standard of the meal the reply I got was "what can I say" when in fact what she should have said was sorry but I will refund your money and if you'll give us a chance well do your meal again and get it right this time, sorry but this was absolute garbage for a take away

Waited over an hour for our food , only to arrive cold and stale !! The popadoms were soft and nan bread stale .. when I rang to complain the attitude of the staff was confronting and challenging .. this review has nothing to do with wanting compensation just an acknowledgment that there was an issue ! I will never use spice venue again !

My wife and I have been visiting Spice Venue for many years. Unfortunatley due to ill health it is a liitle while since we have been able to visit, but returned again last night, and enjoyed an excellent meal!! Good friendly service, and excellent curry!! We look forward to visiting again soon, and highly recommend this jewel of a restaurant in Consett!!

This is our go-to Indian restaurant/take-away in Consett. Service is always friendly and welcoming. The owners take the time to get to know their regulars. Food is always ready to collect when they say it will be. Perfect for a meal out too. It's very reasonably priced. The restaurant is comfortable with a nice atmosphere. Plus, everything feels very authentic! Thanks guys, see you again soon :)

Rediculous time waiting for food

First time visiting i was pleasantly surprised.

I have come to visit my brother and his partner for a few days. I recommended to my brother that we invest local and show support by going for a meal close by.

And even better you wouldn't know they are healthy options, taste and texture just as good, and would highly recommend the ShatKora ( sorry for spelling!) and the king prawn option in the same section. Service is efficient and food is much less oily than some.

Had tea tonight at spice venue no taste at all very bland food defo won’t be going again sorry was a lovely place friendly staff unfortunately chef not up to standard especially for being an Indian best part of the meal was the after 8 mint where’s all the flavour ??????

Do not do it!!! I collected a meal last night, I got it home and it was luke warm, I thought fair enough maybe I was running late in collecting. So I ate the meal and it seemed to be ok. Fast forward; to midnight and I'm being violently sick for the rest of the night, it has write me off the following day too. Never ever again, and I hope this review helps someone else.

Have used this restaurant for about 12 years, had both sit in and take aways. The food is always well presented and very tasty. The owner Mahmood is always welcoming and polite as are the staff.

Great place to eat, friendly staff and owner. Highly recommended.

Fab food service good but kitchen can be slow

we went on new years eve. never been before. first impressions, very clean and nice decor. the staff were attentive without being on top of you all the time and very clean and smart. we have been in some indian eateries where the staff had frayed dirty cuffs. also very polite. the food was delicious with just the right amount of time between courses. would visit again.

We are not from the area but we were staying at a local hotel. We ordered poppadoms and the onion bhaji and lamb chops for starters. Then we had a chicken bhuna, cabbage bhaji, rice and naan. Every part of the meal was tasty and well presented. The manager was very friendly and the service was good. The prices were very reasonable. It is unlikely that we will ever be in the area again but if we were we would visit this restaurant. We had a pleasant evening and enjoyed the meal.

Ladies and gentlemen we have been going to this restaurant since it first opened on 04.04 2004 and every visit you will receive excellent service and tasty food. Mahmood and his family and staff always make you feel welcome and provide excellent service and cater for all your needs. Well worth a visit and am sure you will return for more.

This isn't the first time we've had a bad experience here-the staff are quite frankly rude liars! An entire restaurant was complaining about waiting an hour for starters & we were told our takeaway meal would be ready for collection in 40 mins - after 1 hour & 40 mins of constantly being told 'yes your food is coming', then overhearing staff coming out of the kitchen saying here isn't any food ready??? Just makes the owners look like greedy liars!! Never, ever visiting here again-terrible experience!

So disappointed was my go to delivery. But they lied twice about how long it would take for delivery. So had to cancel. Sorry you are now off my list. Sad day

We visited the Spice Venue on Saturday evening. We were given a very warm welcome and seated in a booth. Service was quick and pleasant. The tables were nicely set and any used crockery moved immediately. The food was excellent full of flavour and nicely presented. We have been going to this restaurant since it opened and are always very satisfied.

Haven't been here for a few years, service was great, food delicious as well as being a generous size. Going back on a regular basis now!

If your within driving distance and in need of a GREAT curry then its well worth the trip! Food is amazing and the staff more than helpful. We only had takeaways but the quality and taste of the curries is in my top ten places...

Out of this world. The food is outstanding and the service even better. If you like really hot curries ask for the Phal, its not on the menu, but they will make it if you ask and im yet to find a resteraunt that does a better phal. Also the Carai is second to none. I eat here on regular basis and I have never had less than 5 star experience.

Six of us ate here whilst cycling the C2C. We all enjoyed the food and the staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly the owner who spent some time talking to us.

This restaurant has been a favourite of ours for many years. Always exceptional customer service, great range of dishes and great selection of wines available. Staff happy to chat - as is the boss himself - and similarly very happy to advise on choice of dishes, how spicy, what goes well together etc etc. Cosy and romantic booths, and large and small tables available.

Eaten here quite a bit and never had a bad meal would recommend 👍

Another well run family business offering a wide array of Indian cuisine. Want it milder or spicier, just let your waiter know and you won't be disappointed. Individual booths give the room a more intimate feel.

Had a great takeaway from here mixed kebab starter followed by tandoori mixed grill which were excellent
