I went here with my other half for the first time and had a lovely meal. No starters, a curry each and shared a side and naan. Not bad food and thought we will come back. That is until the bill came… The total was £81 (I would note written in a different pen to the rest of the bill) so we just went through to check they hadn’t added anything extra on as it did seem quite dear for what we had had. All looked fine. Then we looked at the totals and did a rough count up in our head and thought it couldn’t be right. Now we don’t normally sit going through our bill when we go out to eat as you like to think you can trust it is ok. Sometimes mistakes happen but we can’t see this was a mistake. We ended up being those people who got their phones out to calculate to ensure our mental maths wasn’t failing us and sure enough it totalled £51. We added it 3 times to check. I was giving the staff the benefit of the doubt trying to see that the 5 had just looked like an 8 but it was 100% an 8. Also they had written £81.50 and the bill was in actual fact £51.15 so even the pence was wrong. My other half handed it back and just said “there is a mistake” and with no fuss the waiter took it away and brought it back to us amended to sure enough £51.15 and the waiter just said “you are right.” So all the behaviour alluded to the fact they knew they had tried it on with us. They also couldn’t thank us enough when we left. I was presented with quite a large chocolate bar when the bill came which was quite random and could have been a distraction technique. We got it resolved no fuss or dramas but it’s a shame as the food and atmosphere was nice but it’s not nice to know you are trying to be conned. Just makes us wonder how many other people they’ve done it to who haven’t noticed or questioned it. A 60% mark up is huge!! Sad to say we won’t be going back.

First time popping into the restaurant to pick up a takeaway & the manager was a lovely guy, spoke to us about the history of the building & we had a beer whilst we waited for our food, got home & the food was excellent, so much flavour, will 100% be eating in next time

My wife and I went on Monday for our wedding anniversary meal, clean, tidy, great service and superb food, and the bonus of being very reasonably priced. After trying the others locally, we've found that Spice Masala is far better than the rest... We'll definitely be back

Spice Masala was recommended to us and I have to say, we were not disappointed! The gentleman that greeted us at the door was very friendly and courteous. The staff were quick to serve us and check that we were happy throughout the meal. The food was lovely. Every item ordered was delicious. I would 100% recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a nice meal out in Ongar.

We have recently moved to Ongar in January and tried the local Indians. Spice Masala is by far the best one! We get this takeaway every weekend without fail: never ever had a bad meal. The best Indian takeaway I have had in my life, the flavours and salt/sugar levels are spot on. Very very well done. deserve a pat on the back!

Ordered a takeaway for my brother’s 18th, we are regular customers and are never disappointed but tonight was a different story. Ordered 2 peshwari nans and received two plain ones (extremely dry) had a chicken tikka bhuna which is usually lovely but had no flavour what so ever and the chicken was dry, madras was spicy but didn’t taste of much else. Safe to say we will not be rushing back, not sure if it was a bad night or what but nothing worse than a bad curry when you’ve been looking forward to it all week :(

Ordered a delivery last weekend, waited 2 hours, tried calling - phone engaged, had to go and collect, not good in lockdown. Gave them a second chance and ordered again this weekend, told them we had waited 2 hours last weekend, only to wait 2 1/2 hours this weekend! Phoned several times - they said it would be 15 mins, when it did eventually arrive we had arranged other food so sent it back! No apologies from them! Don’t bother ordering a delivery! We have been very regular customers but are now ordering elsewhere.

Our first visit after a long time and we were happy to discover once again very friendly staff, very good food and very reasonably priced menu. Covid practices were in place and it was well maintained and spotless. The restaurant was well suppported with all tables being taken throughout the evening.

Thought we would try the takeaway as there had been some excellent reviews. As we are on self isolation we requested a delivery. We were very disappointed. The samosa were two of the smallest ones I have ever seen. Just minuscule. The matar paneer consisted of just a few peas and no discernible cheese. The Peshawar Nan was not a Peshawar nan. It was very spicy, no hint of coconut. The CTM was just sauce, very few chicken pieces and to top it all in the chicken Balti was a small stone or hard seed that could have easily cracked a tooth. I know we live in strange times, but the meal was inexcusable. I have been to the restaurant many times when it was as open but will take my custom elsewhere. It also took an hour to arrive.

We popped in here by chance in the run up to Christmas and they happily seated us. Drinks were quick and very affordable! Meal was insane We had starters and shared a curry but the food was really yummy. The only comment my oh mentioned was that his samosas were a bit spicy for his liking but he still ate them! We had no food waste which is always a good sign! And the ambience was lovely They even gave us a little box of Xmas chocs with our bill! I’m looking forward to going back next month!

Visited January 11th as a party of 12 to celebrate my dad's 86th birthday. Considering there were so many of us the service was really good, food excellent and again highly recommended. They also let us have a birthday cake and candle (much to the embarrassment of my dad!). All in all a very pleasurable evening and good food.

Would definitely recommend this Indian to everyone- especially the king prawn bhuna. Lovely atmosphere

I have eaten at Spice Masala on many occasions and never been disappointed. I was there this evening with my Mum. We had the £10.95 special menu which includes a starter, main and side. I had the prawn puree to start which was perfectly spiced and absolutely delicious. We both chose chicken dhansak for our main which again was superb. The accompaniments we selected, peshwari naan and pilau rice, complimented the main dishes. A fantastic meal with great service - highly recommend.

Finally came in after driving past numerous times and thinking I must try it out. So glad I did. The food was excellent as was the service. I quite often eat out alone and feel rushed but here I didn’t. The only thing I will suggest is that they spend some money on the front of the building to make it look more inviting. Otherwise I can’t find a single fault. Looking forward to eating here again soon.

Haven’t eaten in a while so decided to try it after a bad meal about 6 months ago. Such as shame as the staff and service was excellent. Starters were greasy and cold and the main courses were tasteless. Hope it gets better but I am going to find a new restaurant.

My family have lived in ongar for over 20 years and I had never come to this restaurant until today on a date with my man whilst visiting for the weekend from the Midlands.The service and food was absolutely perfect. Easily one of the best Indian restaurants in ongar. Friendly staff and with a nice touch at the end when issuing the bill. Thanks! We will be back

Booked a table for Saturday night. Although living in Ongar we had not been in there for about 15 years when it was the Kismet. Had an absolutely lovely meal, the food was excellent and full of flavour as well as being hot. No complaints whatsoever. All of the staff were very friendly and welcoming and not too busy to chat and have a laugh. Would highly recommend and will be going again soon!

Food was average, bit bland. We came on a Saturday when it was busy and had to wait a long time between courses. Reasonably priced just not that special.

Eight of us visited on Saturday 27th April, for my daughter's 21st birthday. We live in Shenfield but the Indian restaurants there are of mediocre quality with high prices. Found the Spice Masala about 8 months ago and although it's a 20 minute drive it's worth it. We had an excellent meal with very attentive service. We didn't mention the birthday but the waiters must have seen that she had some cards to open at the table. At the end of the meal they brought out an ice cream cake with a candle and sang Happy Birthday! Food was very tasty, meat/chicken tender and flavourful. In fact we drove past on Sunday morning and said we would like to go back for more! This has become out favourite Indian restaurant for miles. Highly recommended.

We had our first date here, when it was the Kismet, and it's still wonderful. The wine list is more adventurous now, the markup modest- there's a NZ Pinot Noir you could take for a classic Burgundy, but give it a chance and lay off the lime pickle.

Went to this place with my mum, didn’t need to book, Service was only slightly slow but this was expected as it was very busy. The waiters were very attentive and one was very funny (didn’t get his name but he’s a character).

We visited late on Sunday 10th for a takeaway. We had Onion bhaaji , Chicken tikka biryani, Garlic Chilli Chicken & Chicken smash like.

Lovely greeting every time from the guys here, the food is always so consistently amazing, every time I visit my nan I go here and it never disappoints. They are always very accommodating and also give a free box of chocolates as a thank you which goes a long way.

Myself my husband, mum and her friend visited Spice Masala last minute on Saturday night, the restaurant was full up and there were people collecting or waiting for their takeaways- we know this is a great sign. Fortunately we were squeezed in by Miah (this hilarious waiter) and Jack (the owner).

My friend and I ate here last night and we had a great time. The service was probably the highlight, followed by the food then the simple yet cosy atmosphere. Such friendly and welcoming staff and really tasty food with dishes I haven’t come across before. I’d definitely recommend it and we’ll definitely be back.

I would like to say this Indian Restaurant gets better but I can't because it is just so good already and every time we eat here we just think this is just the best Indian food around. Wonderful owner and staff; we wouldn't eat Indian food anywhere else.

Four of us visited the Spice Masala on a Sunday and we were one of two tables so unfortunately no real atmosphere was generated. The restaurant itself is very light, perhaps a little to much lighting but that is just my personal preference.

We came to Spice Masala to celebrate my Grandmothers 86th birthday. The staff were incredibly courteous her and friendly to our whole group. We were served delicious food and were treated very kindly by the staff who did not make us rush and even gave the time to recommend authentic dishes to try. The evening dinner was finally wrapped up by two surprise boxes of maltesers for my younger sister and Grandmother.

Visited this restaurant during August to celebrate my Mums 86th birthday with family.

We have been going to this restaurant since it opened, having tried all the others in town. Our friends are real curry gurus and agree that this is the best for miles around. The food here is lovely and the staff very good, my only complaint would be that sometimes if you order a takeaway you are told a time but then kept waiting a lot longer.

Amazing would recommend to friends and family ! Have visted many times throughout the year with the boyfriend family of 20 people and been excellent every time , food was amazing very hot and fast not forgetting delicious.

We have lived in the Ongar area for 32 years and tried all the restaurants many times. The Kismet (as it was) and now the Spice Masala is still the best Indian in the area. Food as good as ever, lovely old building, easy parking and good value.

Went to this restaurant and had a very nice meal with friends. I was for that reason very insulted when I asked for the bill that the staff started talking in there own language and laughing looking at my table.

We moved into the area in December and have had regular take always and have eaten in the restaurant three times. Each time has been consistent with the fantastic quality of food with generous portion sizes. The atmosphere in the restaurant is so friendly with the staff very professional and can’t do enough for you. The restaurant is very clean and comfortable. All in all best Indian restaurant in Ongar - and believe me we have tried them all .

Honestly the best Indian restaurant in Ongar by far! i have had numerous take always from here and also sat in the restaurant. the service is amazing and the Boss is lovely! always offers a complimentary drink and even at times gives out box's of chocolates to take home. The food is so good in here whenever i go to another Indian restaurant i can always tell the difference in the taste and quality of their food. it does not compare to the Spice Masala. great atmosphere and great service, food is reasonably priced you get a lot for what you pay for! my average take away is around £30 and thats two mains, sides u name it the lot! sitting in there with drinks wont break the bank its so worth it. you will not regret it! getting booking now :)

Me and my wife took my in laws out for a family meal on Saturday, we normally get a take away from here but we decided we would try eating in for a change , as usual the food was perfect and the waiters were very attentive and was very comical we had a lovely evening

Really friendly service upon arrival and throughout. I had lamb chops to start, a little tough and overdone. My husband had the king prawn puri which was nice. Main's were very tasty, the masala had a nice amount of spice. The naans were a little disappointing. A reasonable wine list, however, the diet coke is not bottled and so watery and a bit flat. There was a nice atmosphere in the restaurant and I would definitely return.

5 of us went on Saturday night for dinner and it was perfect. Food was delicious, staff are friendly and the atmosphere was lovely! There's so many yummie dishes to choose from and you get a great selection of sauces etc with your poppadoms! (I always hate it when you only get 1, but here you get 5 to choose from)

I have visited this restaurant many times and have always had good food and good service. I wasn't sure if it was because we had a late booking at 9:15pm or not but as soon as we walked through the door me and my 5 friends could all sense that we were not really wanted. It took us 15 minutes to be seated which we don't mind but we would like an update from staff what is happening. When we were finally seated our waiter who was one of the younger staff was very cold with us taking our order for drinks and food. The food was good and always is I do have to comment. When we finished our meal there was such a rush, to the point where the waiter dropped all plates on the floor and down the back of my friends coat which was not evident until we left the restaurant. In the end we could not get out of the restaurant quick enough! poor! poor! service. Such a shame Spice Masala, we used to enjoy visiting you. I have 5 other members of the party that have had exactly the same experience as me.

From the moment you walk in to the nicely decorated restaurant to the time you walk out the service is excellent. We booked a meal at 6.30pm Friday night expecting it to be quiet but already it was buzzing so pleased we reserved.

My 12 year old daughter insists coming here after Thursday evening science lesson for evening meal. One day I'll persuade her to have something other than their lovely chicken lots and a naan bread. Meanwhile I get to try out new dishes and we get to finish her homework in nice surroundings, being waited on by pleasant staff. And we are learning more about the culture of the restaurant too!

We went as a family group for the Sunday buffet. Loads of food, really nice mix of starters and main, great naan bread. Value was excellent and staff were super friendly. Really nice meal. Recommend.

We made a last minute booking for dinner last night and luckily for us it was the last available table. Despite the restaurant being packed to the rafters the service was very friendly and efficient. The food was as good as it always is - fresh, well cooked delicious and the courses arrived in good timing. This restaurant never fails to deliver and last night was a great evening with a good atmosphere. We will be back soon. I highly recommend.

I've eaten here before whilst working in the area and given good feedback (different profile name).Each time I come in I get the lamb chops to start as they're among the best I've had anywhere. I always also go for the King Prawn or the Chicken Achari...I can't help it, it's so good, I just had to get the same even though I was taking it back to the place I was working at due to time constraints. I was sure it couldn't vary too much from eating it in...?I ordered the Lamb Chops, Chicken Achari and Paratha.I could sum this up in one word = DRY.The lamb chops... wow, what a change. 2 minuscule chops so chewy and dry that I spent ages picking the bits wedged between my teeth! Horrible.The chicken in the Achari was really dry too, barely able to swallow even with loads of the very rich sauce. The sauce saved the day as this is all I ate along with the bread which was good.Typically, for a meal so disappointing that I didn't really eat I'd mark one, but I know this place is so much better so I've given two stars. If eating in I would probably give it another go, but I'd never get a take-away from here again. Such a shame for producers of what is usually lovely food.

At 21:30 I called at least 4 supposedly open restaurants and all were shut despite TripAdvisor reporting them as open. I drove to Chipping Ongar on spec, reluctantly expecting a visit to the "fish n chipper". I'm not an Indian restaurant fan by habit but dropped in on the basis that the lights were on..... I had one of the house specials, some nan bread with lamb stuffing and their special rice. It took 10-15 mins to arrive which meant someone had made some effort to produce it and bottom line, all was really tasty, good quality and very acceptable value£22 incl tip and a pint of beer. Would definitely recommend. And not a regular reviewer but these guys deserved it.

We were totally spoilt from the moment we walked in. Lovely cosy atmosphere and friendly efficient and attentive staff. Not liking too spicier food and being cautious I ordered a korma dish and the charming head waiter insisted they did something special for me in its place and got the chef to make me the most delightful, favoursome prawn dish I have ever had. Thank you for opening my tastebuds. I can wholeheartedly recommend Spice Masala and will be visiting again very soon. Got takeaway here and thought the food was really delicious all around, especially the sag paneer and garlic naan! Friendly atmosphere and wonderful service made the whole experience even better. Jack you are the best!!

A very enjoyable recent meal at Spice Masala in Ongar whilst on a business trip. The restaurant is located in the main street of Ongar with good parking located within a few hundred yards. The visit was on a Wednesday evening and the restaurant was fairly quiet (4-5 other tables) but the atmosphere was good in the restaurant. The staff were friendly, helpful and very attentive. The restaurant is well decorated, clean and bright. The menu is quite extensive and offers a range of dishes to suit different tastes. I enjoy spicy food and found the food well spiced, not too oily and very tasty. I spent around £30 on a starter, main, side, bread, beer and a soft drink which felt very reasonable. I would have no hesitation in recommending the restaurant as it offers good value and friendly service in a very pleasant, clean location.

Visited Spice Masala on a Saturday evening and It was very busy - despite having booked, we were shown to a table in an 'add-on' bit of the restaurant, which was quite large and empty apart from one other couple - we asked if there was a chance we could be moved into the restaurant which seemed to be quite buzzy, but were told that wasn't a possibility - the food was lovely, especially the telapia bhuna, but we felt like we were on the 'naughty' table and missing out on the party next door. Our surroundings were quite soul-less and devoid of atmosphere - we may just as well have ordered a takeaway! I would eat here again, but would stipulate on booking that we would like a table in the main restaurant

I have eaten the food here 3 times now, and I can honestly say that each time, the food has been some of the tastiest indian food that I have had. Some curry restaurants may serve a varied menu, but each dish tastes very much like other ones on the menu. However, at the spice masala each dish i have had so far has had its own distinctive flavours and has tasted like it has been made with care and by using very fresh ingredients. I would very happily recommend this restaurant for anybody who wants something a bit special. I can recommend the green bengal chicken curry - delicious!

Best curry around they cater for all needs and really go out of their way to help you. The Korma is brilliant and staff lovely. Highly recommended to all.

In the restaurants defence we were told that the portion sizes on the stop the clock deal were smaller, however the amount of meat in the main dish was surprising, in a chicken sagwala I got 2-3 pieces of chicken and a load of spinach!

We visited this restaurant at short notice on a Saturday night and felt lucky to get a table as it looked full. The menu was extensive and varied with some specials which I hadn't tried before which took this above your average curry restaurant. The staff were friendly, although it seemed to take quite a long time to take our order and bring our food but I think that was because we had come in at the same time as a few other tables and as I said we hadn't booked. When the food came it was lovely. Beautifully served and seasoned chicken tikka, still very moist as it should be and gorgeous nan bread. A very nice meal and I would definitely go back.

Found it to be a bit of a funny atmosphere I felt like I was sitting in someone's front room.FOOD...I would say very fresh but missing something had tandoori mixed grill but just missed that flavour where you would say wow.service was good would I go back prob wouldn't rush as there better ones around the area I would say it done the job but Iv had better.

Went to Spice Masala Indian restaurant last night(friday 30th). So impressed with excellent frendly service, we were made to feel very welcome. The food was first class, very tasty indeed from a comprehensive menu. We will go back for sure.

I visited with a large party, so never the best circumstances for a good meal. However a variety of starters, breads and meat dishes were served which were all impressively tasty. Staff here are really friendly and anxious to please, and overall a very good dining experience.

Original old style service and food with a contemporary setting and terrific bengladeshi cuisine. Not your normal fast food indian. A more relaxed approach to eating out with great engaging staff that know their menu. I'm trying to hard to work my way through the menu as I have never had anything but lovely tasty dishes. All of the staff want to be your friend and they succeed without being familiar, always efficient. If youre not sure what you want or are unsure of indian food the boss will ask the chefs to cook to your needs.He will also create a dish with the ingredients you like. beer is always cold !! My better half was not a keen Indian food eater but she loves going here. Medium priced, tips discretionary. Nothing too much trouble....and NO I have nothing to do with them at all. If I read this I would think I did. Give it try. Ask to visit the kitchens/ no trouble at all.

We have eaten here three times before, mid week, and thought is was very good food with good size portions and good service. However last Saturday the service was very slow and even though the food was as good as usual the hour wait spoilt the evening. There were four of us dining but we couldn't chat because it was so noisy we couldn't hear ourselves. One waiter was very strange, one of those you either like or hate and we didn't think much of him shouting and waving his arms around. Lovely building and good food but won't go on a Saturday again.

Came here on a Saturday night and had lovely food wine and great service. We were turned away from the Mogul although they had not closed. The Spice Masala made up for it! X
