We have been coming here for years and it was so lovely to see Johnny back - we’ve missed you. Your passion for the food and the clients shows through. The new menu items were full of new flavours. The tasters of the forthcoming menu were amazing - so looking forward to the king prawns in the fancy tomato broth thing was just beautiful. Lovely dinner and amazing customer service. Thank you.

First time we have been to the Mogul - loved everything about this restaurant from the excellent, friendly service from Johnny and his staff to the delicious, fresh flavours of authentic Indian cuisine with fusions weaved in from Bangladesh - cooked to perfection! Clearly passionate about food, we were give extra dishes to try: corn ribs and a cod fillet...sublime! A unique and welcome addition to our meal ( not had that before!).We will definitely come back and highly recommend. Can honestly say, probably one of the best Indian restaurants in Essex. My favourite curry restaurant in Ongar. Such tasty curries and the new heritage dishes on the takeaway menu are delicious from what we have sampled so far - I can recommend Staff Beef Curry and Shahi Chicken Korma. Staff are always friendly.

Been going to the Mogul for many years we no longer live in Ongar but still drive there for our meal. Food was top class, atmosphere was great and service was amazing. Well done Jonny and team.

We’ve been enjoying The Specials Menus which run from Thursdays to Saturdays, changing monthly. There is a wonderful variety of dishes on offer, something for everyone. I have to say though they surpassed themselves last night with the cod and bisi dish - an authentic Bangladeshi creation, with gently pan-fried cod (in olive oil) in basmati rice with Bangladeshi broad beans mixed throughout - so unusual, very delicately flavoured, enhanced by the waiter squeezing lemon juice over the food at the point of serving to add a fabulous zing to it all. - utterly superb!

Tonight we went to The mogul Ongar High st Essex We can’t recommend it enough they treated us four women like Queens. The chef cooked us a dish not on the menu. We tried new dishes they’re introducing we had cocktails. Service amazing food amazing a lovely Evening staff are brilliant ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reliably good food and friendly service. As well as all the usuals they have some great specials on the menu, worth going back to try them out!

I chose the restaurant based on the reviews and was not disappointed. The staff were all very friendly. The menu had many dishes that I had not seen before with plenty of choices and prices reasonable. All our food was served piping hot and the best of ingredients were used.

Friendly staff and atmosphere, regardless of whether it is packed or on a quieter sports night on TV. The menu is going through some changes, and myself and friends have been fortunate to be there when (one of) the owner's, who is also a chef, who is passionate about the cooking process offers free menu tasters to work out if that item is going on the main menu or next 'specials' menu. They were very helpful with choosing the right meal if, like me, you are on a very restricted diet. I have been back several times and will definitely be here again.

Found this place spontaneously last night and what a fantastic decision. VERY welcoming staff, great, unstuffy atmosphere and AMAZING good. Specials board which was explained to us in great detail. Whilst waiting for our mains we were provided with starters off the specials as a taster. Brilliant way of trying new foods and excellent customer experience. The staff couldn't do enough for you and as I mentioned, this was more than just a meal out, it became a while experience. The food was delicious and so much choice - easily has become our new favourite and we can't wait to return. Great value for money - not too pricey. Highly recommended.

I've eaten here loads of times but this time their service was very slow. Took an hour to take our orders! Delicious food though.

Amazing evening Went with friends and had a great table at the back of the restaurant Staff very friendly and attentive Apparently we couldn’t see the specials board and the manager brought us samples of each as they had forgotten to tell us Then we were given one of the main specials as well! The mackerel was fantastic but so were all the other dishes All in all we couldn’t fault a single thing Even the bill was good! We will all be back again soon

We have visited the Mogul in the past, but not for a while. Tonight’s visit was first class! The food was superb, especially the mackerel and pomelo off the specials board! The staff were very attentive and fun. The whole evening was great and the bill very reasonable. We certainly won’t leave it so long next time! Highly recommended. We will be back very soon!

Had another wonderful meal at The Mogul last night. Introduced our 2 friends to this restaurant and they were very impressed. Staff know every ingredient in the dish and can explain exactly how it’s cooked. Did not rush us from our table. Perfectly handled our allergy requests and even sourced non alcoholic beer!! Cannot wait to return. Best Indian restaurant in Essex.

Stayed in the area a couple of days and went here for a takeaway. The gentleman we spoke to was very friendly and happy to give suggestions. Food was very yummy. Received dips and also a beer which we weren't expecting. That was a nice touch. Will defo visit again if in the area 👍

Yet again great food !!! On Thursday Fridays and Saturdays you must try the specials on the board not your usual Indian food . Service fab as always .

Our first visit after a recommendation and we weren’t disappointed ! The service was really good and the food served quickly (but not too quickly!) Flavours were lovely and meat’s succulent and freshly cooked We will definitely return :)

First time at this restaurant that was recommended by a friend. The welcome was very friendly. We sat the little table for four in the snug, which almost felt like private dining. Drinks orders were taken and then the owner Johnny came over to explain the menu and the concepts of the restaurant. There were lots of specials and not just your standard restaurant fare. The waiters were friendly and we were then served a complimentary starter for the table of Tandoori corn ribs, which were lovely. we then had tandoori mix grill chicken tikka, Patia chicken shashlik staff, beef curry and a number of sides rice and bread, all which where of a very high standard. Throughout the meal, Johnny was coming over to check that everything was okay and that there were no issues and I can honestly say there were none. John really looked after us, made the evening very special, and absolutely we will be returning in the near future.

Amazing food! Monkfish was the best I’ve ever had anywhere! Johnny the owner is passionate about the dishes that are full of spice and flavour and cooked to perfection! I’m fussy when it comes to Indian food as I don’t want it to be cooked in ghee. Here your food is cooked in olive oil or avocado oil and minimum oil used so it feels quite healthy too (if you’re into that)! Def be going back, service , staff are friendly and gave everything spot on! Even the background music is fab! Best Indian restaurant I have ever been to !

I chose 5 stars because I was amazed when they gave us the food it was lovely it tasted beautiful the beef melted in my mouth my wife and granddaughter said it was lovely too. Highly recommended

We are regulars at the Mogal, but tonight i felt compelled to leave a review. We ALWAYS have amazing service, value for money and great food however tonight it was a next level experience. We were offered the specials, talked through the heritage the flavours and orgin of the menu and they certainly did not disappoint. I hope you keep introducing these specials and providing an education of the delicious Bangladeshi cuisine.

Delicious food and a great evening out with family. It was incredibly busy so I recommend pre booking … and as a result the atmosphere in the room was lively but incredibly loud. But will definitely be back.

Can’t believe we haven’t tried this restaurant before , from first call to book ,Johhny the owner was so professional and what stood out was his passion for his business and his food. There were 6 of us in our party and all of us wanted to try different dishes . There was a specials board which was a lovely change for an Indian restaurant and I had the fish fry to start and loved the light tasty dish. One of our party tried the “staff beef curry” and it was presented with a special Custard , Johhny explained the way to eat it and its history. My friends and I had prawn dishes for main and the prawns were beautifully cooked with some amazing flavours. Food in this restaurant was not only different but all full of flavours and staff were so efficient. I am in the catering industry and always say people by people and I can honestly say that “Johnny “ is someone who not only made us feel so welcome but his Personality and aim to please attitude definitely made this restaurant a set above others similar . Best Indian I’ve ever been to and thank you !! We will now be regulars

Had a fab time visiting the Mogul this past weekend - the place was comfortable and inviting and the staff were very attentive. Annoyingly I forgot to take a photo of the food but it was really well presented on some lovely dinner ware. The food was very tasty and just the right portion size. They have a really extensive menu and we're hoping to be back soon to try some more options. I'd recommend the Bhuna

The food tasted so good! Tasted on point all of it. There was nothing that wasn’t good. And from my other Ongar Indian restaurant reviews, this place is my favourite out of all three. They had lovely service, nice atmosphere and good appropriate music. Will definitely come back here again and highly recommend.

Lovely food amd price was reasonable.

Really delicious food for our first visit to this restaurant with friends that live in the area. Liked that there were different options on the menu as well as the usual food in an Indian restaurant. Husband and I both opted for Phangaas Fish of Bengal. This fish is a Fresh Water Fish. It is a Fillet Cut with no Skin or Bones with White Meat holding Natural Oils which we only compliment by Seasoning with a touch of Lemon Salt and Pepper. Oven Cooked with Olive Oil dressed with a Dhansak Sauce served with Stir Fried Vermicelli Rice Noodles and Asparagus which with a side of a Nan bread was absolutely delicious. Service was pleasant. Will most definitely return to sample some of the other dishes on the menu.

Went for dinner with a couple of friends. The staff were attentive and helpful. There was the standard selection of Indian dishes but lots of other dishes or variations of, that I havent seen before. I had the Bengal Biryani which was really flavoursome and a nice variation on the usual Biryani.

Had a beautiful meal at The Mogul last night. It was their Gourmet night, £18.95 for starter, main and 2 sides. Food was absolutely delicious, freshly cooked and hot. Staff could not have been friendlier. Will definitely return. Highly recommend you try it!

I ordered a takeaway of chiken tikka and peshwari naan from here and was really disappointed. First of all the staff were not very welcoming or friendly. Then when I got home and unpacked my meal I couldn't believe how miserly the portion was. There were 8 small pieces of chicken and a really manky looking naan bread. This had been ordered as a main course and cost me nearly £16. If the tikka had of had a decent bit of salad with it, then that would have been a bit better, but it didn't. I felt really ripped off and it was definitely not worth the money that it cost. I will not be ordering anything from here again. I don't really want to eat at a place where they think so little of their customers satisfaction and of the quality of their food. Its obviously just about raking as much money in as they can.

Ordered a number of starters to take away. Onion bhajis were poor - greasy and comprised of something that held together the onion. Not much onion at all. 3 small bhajis for £5.50. Tarka Dhall had hardly any lentils and was too watery - again, for £5.50. Chana Bhaji was semi okay, but not very flavoursome. Cauliflower Bhaji and Aloo Gobi was okay.

Looking at the reviews, maybe I was just unlucky but I ordered a takeaway last night for the first time and was really disappointed. For the price, the portions were extremely small, the chicken tikka had 4 small pieces of chicken. The flavour was minimal and everything was put into plastic containers rather than the foiled containers so the food was freezing when I got home. I certainly won't be rushing back

Fantastic food and atmosphere. The best curry we have had in a long time and in Essex at the minute! My mrs is extremely fussy and agrees. Aside the food you get very well looked after from the moment you are walking up to the door to the very end. We will be back!

We live in ingatestone and have struggled to find a good Indian in the many areas surrounding us. We were told about mogul by family who live in ongar and it did not disappoint. They fit us in last minute on a Saturday night, service was top notch and food was sooo delicious. The menu has so much variation with a lovely focus on dishes other than just curries. We particularly loved the truffle naan which they gave to us on the house to try on our first visit. We loved it so much, we returned the following weekend with friends.

What can I say… I’m rather choosy when it comes to Indian food, and I have my favourite ones, in different parts of London and Essex that I have been going to in the past 35 years, but, I can honestly say, this restaurant that I visited for the first time, has literally blown me away! From the minute I walked in, I loved the enticing, warm and friendly atmosphere, the staff were attentive to our needs, and made us feel very welcome. The king prawn puri, was the best I have ever tasted and the mains were out of this world too! If you are a king prawn lover like me, then you must try the chefs special! So if you’re looking for fresh, authentic and delicious food, with friendly staff, then you must check this restaurant out! This is now going to be my new goto Indian restaurant in Essex! Thank you to all the staff for making this evening so wonderful.

While the service is impeccable and cordial, there was something off about my lamb dish: the lamb chops were possibly grilled a lot earlier and was incredibly wiry and hard! I would have given five stars but it seems costs are catching up with this once good restaurant.

A very poor imitation of an Indian restaurant. Catered to those who have literally never been to a decent (Indian) restaurant. It's a bit like asking a deaf man to sing a song, or a blind man to paint a picture... Utterly clueless. Quite disgusted to see that they're charging for 'pompadom' and chutney- neither of which we ordered, but were provided under the pretence of them being complementary. Also they were disgusting. Whilst the food was awful, quite impressively, it wasn't the worst thing about 'The M*gul Resturant'- given the manager shouted each order at us as they arrived, and flung them across the table in any which way. They did give us oranges after the meal. They were nice and probably the best offering they have.

Nice decor , waiters were v pushy re the popadoms , they then forgot half my wife’s dish ! When reminded no apologies made ! My dish was v greasy , i this every week and never been like this - I see a few on here suggest the best Indian in Essex ! ….. I don’t think based on this visit it was , pilgrims Korai and bongow close by are far better , we won’t re visit

Phenomenal modern indian cuisine, great food and great staff!! Best Indian outside of London 5 star. The staff are amazing and so attentive and friendly can’t recommend enough!

Best Indian food around! Welcoming, pleasant, not overbearing staff. Excellent service, varied and unique menu. Tasty, perfectly spiced food, beautifully presented in comfortable surroundings. Lovely evening at Mogul with friends....thanks Mogul staff 😊

The food was nice but my boyfriend asked for something which wasn't too spicy, which it actually blew his head off it was so spicy, I asked for the sauce to be put on the side, when my dish came the sauce was all over it. Now to my score of a 1.... £19 for 2 glasses of wine that is absolutely ridiculous. When paying the bill which was the most expensive Indian I've ever had, my card didn't work the first time or so i thought it said void. So i did my card again to which it went through fine. However I just checked my bank account to find I was charged twice for my meal... I will be returning later for an explanation & a refund... This is why I only gave 1 star....

Went here for a meal with me and my husband. I’ve never come across staff that are so rude! Started with when our drinks were ordered, they took the food menus away even though we hadn’t decided what we were having or even ordered our food, so had to ask to have the menu back. Once we had our food - which was average, a waiter came and cleared the table and started to interrogate my husband as to why he hadn’t eaten all his chicken. It was like he was being told off! We noticed around us that after people’s meals they were being given hot towels and slices of orange, we sat there patiently waiting, but they never came. So we asked for the bill. I asked one of the waiters if they accept Apple Pay via my phone. He just looked at me and said in a very rude way ‘what do you want to do.... pay by card, pay by your phone’ to which I replied I would like to use my phone and he just said ‘well that’s app pay not apple pay’ i just looked at him baffled while he plonked the card machine in front of me and walked off. I paid with my phone and waited for the receipt to print off. As it printed another waiter came over and gave me the receipt and walked off, not a thank you in sight. So we got up and walked out expecting to get a goodbye only to be ignored and made to feel like we had done something wrong. Well we will never ever visit this restaurant again! The rudest staff I’ve ever come across.

Staff were friendly to us, service was fast. Food was plentiful. But food was terribly bland and tasteless from the set Monday night set menu with additional items from main menu. Staff were ridiculing an old man who was trying to order. Only 3 tables being used so not busy. They were also rushing people out as they were closing at 10 they said.Real shame as we have been in the past and its been nice. We will try the Spice Masala next time.

You have tried the rest now try the best. They have a great menu with some fantastic special dishes. The service is friendly and relaxed, a great family business. We have been going here for the last 10 years and always compare other restaurants to here, and they never match it or come close. Love the cocktails, really good selection. Hi have been here a couple of years ago , and had another visit , Not disappointing at all , worth booking as is always very busy . Got a nice little table for 4 I the snug . Nice to have a chat . Very nice staff , nice service , drinks ordered and poppadoms to start with the onions and mango etc all had very nice main courses with some sides . All came up nice and hot ... coffees and the price was excellent too will defo be back , but make sure you book as it’s busy . Had a nice drink in the Kings head first xxx

We’ve had a takeaway from here on 4 occasion now and every single time the food has been outstanding, it is cooked to perfection in every way. We will going back very soon and this time we will be eating in.

We have often eaten here but more recently, because of ill health, we have had takeaways from The Mogul. Still the same beautiful food and good service.

Best I can say it was all right not like most Indian restaurants where heaters are put on the table to keep food warm, so food got cold before we finished so both of us left a lot of food.

How to get a seat at The Mogul? Go when Liverpool are playing! Meals, as usual were tasty and well presented. We especially liked the King Prawn dish. Service is legendary - attentive without being overbearing. We will be back soon!
