We had a fantastic time! Roast dinners are spot on but the service is another level, everyone we interacted with was great but the girl who served us had us laughing the entire time, didn’t catch her name (she had a suit on), but she was the same with every table so attentive and a credit to the business. We will be back as she said we need to try the tiramisu!

On our umpteenth visit the Sparrrowhawk is as excellent and consistent as it always is. The food is first class and really delicious. It comes piping hot. The environment is lovely. The staff are fantastic and long serving, so clearly happy in their roles. Tonight, as on many previous occasions, we were served by Lucas who is a lovely personable young man who provides excellent service at all times.

My seabass was overcooked and I asked for another. This time the fish was better but the potato cake and surrounding vegetables were unappealing in their presentation and this impression was not improved in the tasting. The cockle sauce was sparse, thin and tasteless. The green leaf vegetable was inedible. However the waitress, Rachel, was brilliant, helpful , knowledgeable and thoughtful.

A friend suggested we try this and we were not disappointed. Situated 5 minutes drive from Formby beach it's an ideal stop off for lunch after a walk. They were very busy but service was spot on. There is plenty of places to sit, both, inside and outside. We had our dog so chose to sit outside. The gardens are very nice and it's very quiet as no busy roads nearby. The food choice was very good. All the courses chosen were of a high standard and they offer a good choice of drinks. We'd certainly go back.

First visit since Brunning & Price takeover. Lovely approach with fabulous hanging baskets etc. Looks very smart and prosperous. It’s the usual smart country style decor which is very pleasing. Very busy buzzy atmosphere. The food was a bit disappointing especially the portion size . Stingy portion of bhaji starter , small portion of gammon/ bacon but particularly noticeable was the chilli salad which was very poor especially compared to when I’ve had it before at the Glasfryn . I remember it being lovely and generous with lovely ingredients. This was small with a bit of pre prepared salad .. rip off for the price ! Service was ok but one meal arrived ages after the other which is poor .

Been coming here for years but whoever runs it now has got it just right. Had the Chicken Sunday Roast which was delicious with an extra serving of gravy and a portion of cauliflower cheese to share . All served piping hot by a lovely, friendly waitress. Too full for a dessert but always have a liquor coffee here with a beautiful complimentary all butter brownie which is to die for. Highly recommend if anyone is interested in going.

Visited Sparrowhawk on recommendation of our family and was shocked at how rude and discourteous a member of staff was. Drinks overpriced and food prices ridiculous Waitress abruptly asked us if we had booked which we had not yet offered us a table squashed in corner, we asked for another table and she offered a table in main bar in passage way which was unacceptable Dreadful customer service which we declined to accept Reviews rave about excellent customer service yet we did not find this on a Tuesday night when the place was empty Cannot recommend this pretentious place

It’s always difficult to dine out at Easter so bearing that in mind, the roast we had was ok beef a little on the tough side but very tasty. The potatoes did have a little imperfections but all in all I was satisfied with the food. The service was excellent and the staff did a sterling job on such a busy day. But the dogs!!! Dear god it was like being in Battersea dogs home. It was impossible for our elderly guest to navigate to the bathroom as the ignorant dog owners allowed dogs to stray into passageways. How on earth the staff managed to navigate was an enigma. There was not even and area set aside for dog dinners they were allowed everywhere. Whilst it’s common to ask about allergies there was no consideration for anyone with a dog hair allergy thank goodness my cousin couldn’t make on this day.

We stumbled upon Sparrowhawk looking for gluten free fish and chips after walking at Formby beach. What we didn’t expect was so find one of the largest gluten free menus I’ve ever seen! And such knowledgable staff that were happy to help. Nearly everything on the menu is gluten free, not adapted to be gluten free on order but made gluten free for everyone (And no one would notice!) We had gluten free fish and chips and A GLUTEN FREE PIE! Chicken and mushroom, gluten free short crust pastry. We were so stuffed but they also had a huge gluten free dessert menu, including sticky toffee pudding. Even the flapjack that came with our cups of tea was gluten free! This is definitely a new favourite of ours - we’ll be back. Thanks so much!

Our lunch at the Sparrowhawk on EasterMonday proved to be a complete treat with no April foolery apart from that contributed by us in the amicable banter at our table. Service is always excellent here and today was no exception I chose a smoked salmon starter which came with peas shoots , samphire, horseradish cream, and two pieces of toasted sourdough. Perfect size, perfect flavour. For my main I chose another starter dish : a mini lamb and rosemary pie with pea purée and crispy kale. The pastry was melt in the mouth and the lamb so flavoursome and tender. My party had equal succes with their dishes. With our coffee we were served the miraculous squares of Sparrowhawk flapjack..I say miraculous because they are both vegan and gluten free but taste as though they have every ingredient of naughtiness which makes a sweet morsel irresistible. It was busy, and had a convivial atmosphere . We left full.of good food and cheer.

I could not be more disappointed with the food here. My mum comes regularly and says the food is always good but my food today was awful. It was Easter Sunday and we had a family meal planned. The menu has lots of options for me, as a pescatarian, which is pleasing to see. I went for the pan fried halibut, as it is my favourite fish. They ruined it. No care or attention to how it should be cooked. I make a very good pan fried halibut and I'm not a professional chef, so I had high expectations. There was no sign of any pan frying - none of the searing that should be there. It was like a poached piece of fish, which didn't have any texture of halibut. It was also overcooked and had not a hint of seasoning. The vegetable accompaniments were overcooked - the asparagus had gone mushy. The mushroom sauce was very flavoursome but there was not a hint of morel mushrooms (I love morels) or truffle, as was described on the menu. There was also a film in this saucy, suggesting it had sat under a hot lamp for some time. The service was friendly though, which is good. I could not recommend this place and do not want to return. So disappointed.

Wow! This is how it should be done!! Flawless experience. I had the prawns, beef and then a sticky toffee. The team could not do enough for us, the girl (I think Abby as the bill had a name on) could sell ice to the eskimos, even forced us to buy a bottle of port, and the young man was also so attentive and brilliant, as were all other staff we encountered - couldn’t do enough for you. Saw the staff taking photos for so many different tables which we also partook in. Fantastic, will be back and will be recommending, keep up the good work!

Went with high expectations which were not realised. Their restaurant in Wrexham set such a high standard that they did not match. Serving cold food is a fundamental error. My fish pie was serves cold, It was returned reheated which over cooked the two prawns, I do not remember getting any smoked fish . The half boiled egg was to high a proportion of the filling If you are going to put peas a la francaise then it should contain lettuce not tough beans.

First time I’ve gone in evening . I ordered King Prawn Salad for starter. It had 2 - yes 2 king prawns - for £9.99. I tried to send it back as it was a glass filled with tiny prawns which I never buy or eat . Waitress assured me chef had put some king prawns in . There were 2. It was a disappointment . I had feather beef with tarragon mash - delicious. However the drinks were ordered - but had not arrived by the time we had all eaten . I ordered red wine to enjoy with the beef - I even saved some beef - after everything else was long finished on my plate - in the hood the wine might come . By the time a different waitress came ( from the one who took drinks order ) the beef is saved was stone cold . It spoiled the meal for me. It’s an experience to eat meat with wine - one I look forward to when eating out. My mum was treating her family to a meal as it had been my dads birthday recently . I felt for my mum - as we were all feeling the effects of the service . One waitress was extremely helpful and tried to apologise sincerely for the failures - she was an asset and I spore hated her sincerity . It was good we as a family could chat and enjoy each others company -make the best . I did notice my mum orders steak - it was full of gristle - she left most of it and took it home for her dog . It’s a shame because I’ve been there in daytime and service has been great - well apart from one time my starter came with my main - but I forgave it as the service was noticeably friendly engaging and efficient . Tonight was a shame. I’m intermittent fasting at moment - so I hadn’t eaten since 10 pm day before so was really looking forward to choosing my food in my eating window . 2 king prawns . Eating my meal in shifts - the hot meal shift and the cold meal shift / waiting for ( and in the end having to cancel) my wine . I wasn’t charged for a cappuccino - the gesture to fix .. Would never order that king prawn salad again - misnomer - misleading . Disappointment . I just hate being out and worrying about what the staff are doing or not doing -when I go out I don’t want to be hyper vigilant watching for staff - who are forgetting I’ve come to be taken care of .

Such a shame as lovely place and staff yet the one thing wrong the food! Something has changed as used to come here all thw time but the produce of the food is not of standard to what it was yet charging same prices!. First visit I ordered chicken burger my god it was like chewing on a boot, i then had a replacement which was the steak burger it was edible but no way worth the price and not get what you pay for you want it to be delicious!. I have this place another shot, as thought maybe it was a bad day . This time round i ordered pan fried chicken and boy was that bland i had to put so much salt on no flavour. I do not know what going on with sparrowhawk but one thing is for sure they have defo reduced the quality of the produce and kept it at the same prices hoping you as the customer will not know ! I can taste tbe lack of quality i will not be retruning sadly!.

We love The Sparrowhawk for family celebrations and our visit yesterday didn't disappoint. The staff are all so very nice. Special thanks to Lucas who made sure we had a wonderful visit. Wide range of ages, 5 of us 4 years to 82 years and we all enjoyed our meals. 2 of us had the venison pie with Colcannon, Hubby had pork belly, our daughter had the hake and the littlest one had penne pasta with extra cheese (thanks Lucas😁). We all enjoyed the food, it was perfection. It was busy but we didn't wait for anything. Drinks were good too. One massive problem.... nobody except Granddaughter could manage a dessert! She managed to eat a sticky toffee pudding and ice cream. The menu is just that bit different from other restaurants with usual favourites on as well. So thanks to the staff, the chefs and Lucas for helping us celebrate our 55th Anniversary in beautiful surroundings with lovely food.

Another great dinner, a little overpriced but great quality and service for the money. Whatever happened to your smaller main courses of fish and chips, sausages or ham. My steak, mushroom and ale pie was off the clock...could not find a mushroom, just chunks of delicious tender steak in a pie crust and no mention of mashed carrots on the menu. Also the website states you daily upload the days menu before12pm...no you do not, the menu we got was not the same as online. Seemed to have been a lot of staff changes since my last visit, but served by I think an American Guy again, great sense of humour, he is a credit to the Sparrowhawk.

Visited for a lunchtime meal on 14th December with my wife and a Chinese friend. What I particularly liked, was that even though there was a fixed price and very extensive Christmas menu, the normal a la carte menu, which was even more extensive, was also available. I have never seen such a wide range of food choices available at lunchtime. Staff were very attentive and polite, and the ambience in the venue was wonderful. It really put all 3 of us in the Christmas spirit! All meals that we had were outstanding and reasonably priced. I eat out a lot and without a doubt this is one of, if not the very best restaurant I have ever visited. Just returned from evening meal, very disappointing. Never had a Sunday roast here before and won't have again. The roast potatoes needed a chisel to get into them, obviously warmed up too long in a microwave. The meal was served far too quickly after ordering which leads me to believe it was already plated and just warmed up. Having tried to order a dessert we were told that one dessert with custard was no longer available. Surely it would have been better to inform us of that before we perused the menu. Certainly would never return for a Sunday roast. Not impressed with the service either. Restaurant prices with pub service.

We have visited the Sparrow Hawk for a meal several times over the last few months.Once we were actually in, the food has been good and the waiters very helpful and friendly. There are two things that spoil this place. The first is that when you phone to book a table, the manager is always extremely unhelpful and abrupt, she really doesn’t make you feel that she values your custom. The second is that yesterday, we arrived for a booking at 12 noon, 5 minutes early to find the car park entrance closed by beer barrels! We had to queue almost back to the by pass before a member of staff arrived to remove them and let us in. Again, not very welcoming!

I had the aubergine, chickpea and sweet potato Malaysian curry and it is honestly one of the top, if not the best meal I’ve had out. Fish and chips and the steak burger were also ordered and they were delicious as always. Followed by some delicious desserts; chocolate brownie, sticky toffee pudding and Belgian waffle we all left very impressed and full! Just a shame we aren’t close enough for it to be a regular treat!

We were staying and playing at Formby Hall Golf Club where the service and drinks were appalling, which is also a wedding factory, so having to wait so long for service was also unbearable. We found this gem of a pub/eatery nearby, so as soon as we had finished golf we headed round. Much quicker the second day after such a great experience on day one. The staff were extremely polite and attentive, the food and drinks were exceptional. The building is beautiful, plenty of space-everything top quality. The Manager even posted my jumper back to my house which I had left on the chair outside! All in all can't compliment the establishment and staff enough.

This was our third visit to The Sparrowhawk and we have also dined three times at The Falcon near Banbury. All previous occasions have been straight 5-star visits. On this occasion we had another couple with us: old friends we had to catch up with after Covid. The food was as good as ever but the two girls serving us were far below the standard we have come to expect at these establishments. They forgot things (including the meal tickets) . Our table was close to a service desk and they spent quite a time standing there chatting and joking at a volume which impacted on our own converstions.

Went for Sunday lunch with a couple of fussy relatives. The food was tasty and also served nice and hot, which they are always on the look out for. I liked the fact that I could get a smaller roast . Staff all very friendly and the place was super clean. Lovely setting . Will definitely go back soon.

This was an amazing restaurant with gorgeous setting- both the house and garden were beautiful and so cosy perfect for cottagecore lovers, and you could sit in either as there was indoor and outdoor seating! On top of that the food was also delicious and the staff extremely friendly too! I loved it all so much. Top recommendations for the area!

Last minute booking and had a great meal. Staff still Covid aware and atmosphere was lively with a full restaurant. I had prawns to start, sausages and mash for main and my wife had the duck pancakes followed by sea bass. Both were cooked to perfection and we then finished by sharing a chocolate and orange tart with 2 coffees - again could not fault the food in any way whatsoever. With 2 pints of IPA and a G&T for my wife it was great value at £72 for the bill. Also, jug of water provided with meals without being sold rip off bottled water and flap jack on the side with coffee were both nice touches that show great attention to detail.

We were staying at a local campsite and this was the closest place to eat so we booked for the second night of our break. Lovely staff and nice atmosphere. The food was amazing. Good choices on the menu and pretty reasonable. The chocolate orange tart is in my top three best puds ever! The day after we kept talking about it so we came back again on the last night of our break. Once again the food was great. Good service, staff really nice and great drinks choices. Would def recommend and we hope to come back again.

Will not be returning. Asked 3 times for napkins as not enough on table. Factoring in starters as well as mains, they should have provided enough napkins - but even after repeated requests we never got them.Had to send meal back as knife and fork would not penetrate fish cake. Waitress said chef had over cooked it!! Replacement meal not much better as chips inedible (probably over cooked). Definitely caters for the masses rather than the gourmet.Pleasant enough surroundings though which they probably rely heavily on. Pity.

The gluten free menu is fantastic. Not only is it credited by the Coeliac society so you know it is safe but it also features lots of the meals that usually, as someone who has to eat a gluten free diet, you just don’t get to choose - like pastry-based options. There were three dessert options and lots of ice cream flavours. I had the fish cakes and they were truly delicious. I was so grateful for them for making it so easy for me to enjoy my lunch!I was eating with my elderly grandparents and sister and there was plenty of choice for my grandfather who doesn’t like to eat very many things and for my adventurous Nana, and everyone agreed the food was fantastic. The service and ambience were also great.

Visited the Sparrowhawk for fathers day. The food was good but the service was extremely slow. We waited quite a while to be seated (which is fine) but after we had ordered it took around 25 mins to receive our starter. Once finished, we were asked if we would like our desert (and we hadn't received our main course yet). Between starter and main course was around 40 mins. The manager did come over but was quite dismissive stating they were very busy. The restaurant was busy but not slammed, why take the bookings if you can't produce the food? We spent a lot more time waiting for food than we did actually eating. We have been before but never experienced an issue like this, quite sad really.

Called here with our dog for the first time whilst visiting the area. I telephoned to book a table inside & the staff were polite & accommodating. There is plenty of parking near to the premises & the spacious room grounds/paths are well maintained which facilitates access to the establishment. On our arrival, we had the option of sitting outside as there were a couple of tables available (which could not be pre-booked unlike the tables inside), so decided to sit at one of the socially distanced outside tables with a parasol in a beautiful grassed & woodland setting. Our table service was provided by Tom who was extremely attentative, pleasant, professional & helpful. The menu had a varied selection & he willingly liaised with the chef to provide a suitable option for me with a food intolerance (without it appearing to be an inconvenience experienced in other establishments!).The food was fantastic in good sized portions - we had the pate & a beefburger, a prawn cocktail & the poached chicken Thai salad (with sauces on the side to keep the latter two dishes as oil/fat free as possible). The prawn cocktail was full of normal and king prawns but the Thai salad was outstanding. It was full of beautifully presented, fresh & tasty vegetables & moist flavoursome chicken breast. My husband enjoyed the burger & said the pate was one of the best he had tasted. The prices were reasonable at just under £60.00 for 2 courses of good tasty, fresh food each & drinks. However, the service & willingness to ensure that they could provide a meal which I could both tolerate & enjoy was wonderful by both Tom & the chef. Thank you Sparrowhawk team for a lovely experience in a rare venture away from the house in over 2 years - we hope to be back soon!

My wife and two sons booked a meal at the restaurant for 1615hrs on Fathers Day 20/06/21.We arrived a few minutes early and were seated in the restaurant. The restaurant was busy but not full. We placed our order and waited 30 minutes for a starter to be served. Then nothing until a passing waitress asked if we were ready to order a sweet. I told her that we were still awaiting our main course. We were eventually served our main course after we had been in the restaurant for over an hour.I asked to speak to the manager. A lady came to the table and told us that they were busy. My wife asked her why they took so many bookings is they couldn't cope, the lady shrugged and walked away. She did not address our concerns at all.We have eaten there a few times before and have never experienced a problem. It would have been more professional if the lady had sat down with us and apologised. When the waitress came to collect payment she said that she was sorry and that we were not the first to complain.Clearly the senior management need to address this.We have an anniversary meal booked there with friends next weekend and sincerely hope that things will have improved.

Two of us visited this pub restaurant for a late lunch on Sunday 6th June. This was my first visit to the Sparrowhawk which was mobbed - particularly outside on a sunny day. Despite this, we were quickly seated and all Covid regulations scrupulously followedOur drinks request was soon taken and our food order then placed - this was only a main course and dessert. Both came promptly and my crispy beef with salad was fresh and the best I've tasted. Service was good and courteousToilets were spotlessA well-run establishment and, if I'm back in the Formby area, I will definitely return

We were a group of 5 with one person in a wheelchair. I booked ahead and when we arrived they had allocated us a lovely large table by the window looking into the gardens. All the waiting staff were wonderful - friendly and very patient with us when we deliberated about out choices from the excitingly varied menu. The food was delicious, the setting and decor fabulous, staff a credit to you. Thank you.

Service from certain members of staff is not welcoming The lady owner her head waitress also a young waitress member had very abrupt attitude , zero personality you felt you had to beg to go under cover there was black clouds thunder in the distance requested to sit undercover they looked at bookings considering there was only two tables occupied out of the 20 or so place was empty they seriously considers not allowing us in they suggested only outside on the benches. We stood our ground saying the weather it’s a storm coming They finally agreed While we where there another couple asked could they come inside they where totally refused even though the lightning bolt appeared to have hit the marquee they where sent to the benches begs belief, really the place is really pleasant this management should not be in the service industry and the restaurant should given too professional caterers that don’t judge who cares and puts customer first Sad really there are a couple of waiters that are really good and have a nice personality the management need to take comments seriously Yours a former Michelin star restaurant manager

Sparrowhawk pub is situated in a wonderful location near a woodland with plenty of daffodils around at the moment! At the moment, due to Covid-19 restrictions, dining is taking place in the marquee attached to the pub.Chips were excellent: hand-cut, fluffy inside and crispy outside, the coating of fish was delicious! The cheese and onion pie slice was okay - the pastry was a bit tough but the mustard sauce was beautiful! The greens should have been steamed with salt for longer to properly soften them, and the parsnips would have been less chewy if they had been parboiled longer before roasting. I also wanted more beetroots! The chocolate tart was nice but I imagined it would be thinner than the large chunk I got. The waffle was spot on! The members of staff were very kind, they were wearing masks. There were hand sanititisers at the entrance and in the doorway leading to the toilets. The space between tables was at least 2 metres. The atmosphere was very relaxed. Even though it was a little bit cold this afternoon, we had our jackets on to keep us warm. The car park is at the back. Overall, we had a nice time. We’re happy for the owners to have been able to reopen their place after the lockdown misery and we wish them the best of luck.

We visited here once it was open again. We booked online for the garden menu. We were seated under an open air tent with plenty of room for each table. The service was quick and professional. The food was amazing, tasty and nice and hot. Masks are required if you need to go into the pub to use the toilet but other than that it’s service at your table. We will be back soon.

Managed to get a walk-in table as we hadn’t prebooked. We sat on a picnic bench on the grassy area across from the entrance. Well organised with regard to COVID.Staff were friendly and service was very good. From the small but varied menu I had the crispy fried chilli beef salad, which was right up my street, and my other half had the fish and chips. Both were very tasty good sized portions, would recommend.

This is our 2nd visit since Covid restrictions have been in place. Firstly I would like to say that this feels like the safest restaurant environment that we have been in, whilst still managing to maintain a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. I was very impressed with all of the special festive touches. As always the food was delicious & service was efficient and friendly. Best restaurant in Formby.

Having been so excited during our initial visits to this lovely pub, we gradually felt something was wrong in the kitchen. Gave it one last chance over a year ago and that was it. Thanks, but no thanks!Due to a series of weird coincidences we ended up at The Sparrowhawk last Sunday (December 6 2020). What a nice surprise! Suddenly everything was back to what it used do be.A warm welcome (BTW, we were way!!!!! too early), attentive service and a fabulous Sunday roast followed by a Sticky Toffee Pudding to die for really made our day! Will we return? Most definitely!

At just outside of the city , this is a lovely little cafe/restaurant set on the waterfront . The food was lovely and staff excellent. We stayed inside due to the weather , but this also has an extensive outside seating /dining area and a lovely deck overlooking the water. Food ranged from lite bites to main meals, all looked lovely coming out of the kitchen. Will definately visit again, as it is only a short drive from home. I would recommend booking , particularly if the weather is dry and sunny. Would recommend.

Visited this cafe a couple of years back and the food was really good, value for money and the place was clean and well run. To say my lunchtime experience today was different is an understatement. There were lots of tables that had not been cleared it cleaned. I felt sorry for the two young girls who were trying hard to take orders and keep things ticking over. At least 3 tables walked out whilst we were waiting to order. I had a tuna mayonnaise sandwich with cucumber, the cucumber was extra. When the sandwich came it was clearly on value brown bread, a tiny bit of side salad and a teaspoon of coleslaw for £7..95 is not value for money in my eyes! The coffee was good but that was the only positive. Such a shame as this used to be a nice place.
