I have been to the SBC quite a few times over the years and each time I have had the same experience. The food about scrapes above average for a beach cafe and as for value for money I’d say it’s a little expensive for what it is, however the service is positively terrible. The last time I went (and I mean last time in the past, present and future tense), two crucial elements of the dish I had ordered were missing and for just about 10 minutes we were calling for our waiters attention but somehow through the thicket of empty tables managed not to see us?! Eventually our waiter was called over by another member of staff that brought light to our predicament, this seemed to unsettle her as she looked completely unwilling to come over to our table as if she actually had to work on shift (I know shocker!). Once alerted to the missing food she replied with a snark “Ok? Anything else?”, a different tone and a small apology wouldn’t have gone a miss. What’s more is throughout the entire meal we weren’t checked on once and had to go up to ask for water, again after waiting to be noticed, when asked for water I was told it would be brought to the table even though it was sat in the fridge she was stood in front of and it took another 10 minutes to come, again they must’ve been so busy with the empty tables? It’s also not nearly as clean as shown in the pictures in fact it can be a little bit grubby at times, especially the loos. Overall I would not recommend, as I say this is a typical experience at the SBC, that I’ve also heard from many friends and family.

Very expensive. I think it was £16.50 for a chicken sandwich, which came with no side of chips or anything, other than a few green leaves. That would’ve been another £5. The chicken was the thin chunks you get in packets in the supermarket, not the standard of “chicken breast” I’d expect for that price. Our bespectacled waitress was a little off too, and couldn’t find a smile. Almost threw the drinks menu on the table when she came to take drinks order & we didn’t have the menu. And then when I enquired about desserts, she pointed to the dessert board as if I was a complete buffoon for not having noticed it already. Didn’t enjoy her attitude. It’s dog friendly, and has a great location (hence the prices), and has been good before, but it really isn’t good value, and there are other better options nearby.

Firstly, we were greeted by staff who possibly had hangovers, but definitely didn't want to be there. When we ordered, we were advised we couldn't 'swap' items on the breakfast menu. However, they would happily remove items and charge for something to replace what had been removed!! When the breakfast arrived, there was more 'clean plate' than food. Portions were miserly and very pretentious. I'd expect a far better service for a £15 fry up. Never again.

Arrived for breakfast and seated quickly. Service was pretty quick but unfortunately our waitress looked like she didn't want to be there and didn't crack a smile. I ordered the French toast with maple butter and bacon. It was swimming in butter and maple syrup and was soggy, greasy, burned and inedible. This isn't a cheap cafe and it was pretty disappointing. My daughter didn't finish her strawberry French toast. Husband enjoyed his full English, however. Sugar was soggy as it had sat by the window and got either rained on, or condensation. Prices were surprisingly high, we drove a bit further down the road and there are lots of other eating places, so probably wouldn't visit again.

Yesterday evening we thought we’d go down to Southsea and enjoy an evening by the sea. We then thought we might grab a bite at the Beach Cafe. It turned out to be extremely disappointing. The waitress omitted to let us know we could order other items off another menu that we had not seen so ordered from the menu we were given. The prices were ridiculously high so we went for a Mediterranean share platter costing £55. Well, you would think yum however, what a disappointment! The portions for that price were measly and some aspects of it inedible due to the high salt content. I really need to mention the dreadful singer who we had to pay for through the high prices. Her voice was not mixed in so it was so loud and shouty at times not to mention out of tune. The waitress apologised for not letting us know what else was on the menu but did not offer anything as compensation. We also had to endure floors being swept, tables and chairs being put up for the night, all this whilst we were trying to eat our over prices meal. Very pleasant waitresses but poor service. The view should not compensate for the above.

The drinks always take an age to arrive as well as the food. They have the tuniest kitchen ever which must be the cause of the slow service. They serve take-away coffees as well as serving the people in the restaurant and they cant cope with the amount of business they get. They need to double the size of their kitchen/barista area to cope. When you pay the premium for being the restaurant, you at least want good service which goes wanting due to their inability to make food and drinks quick enough. With regards to the food, good but tiny portions for the money you pay. They are unwilling to swap food ingredients if you don't like or are intolerant of a certain ingredient. You just get the feeling of being scammed in there! Luckily, the views and atmosphere is great due to it's great location on the seafront

I love the Southsea Beach Cafe, the menu is always inspired and the food is fresh and tasty, so I chose to visit for my birthday treat on Saturday. My husband and I arrived at 9.30 and the cafe was fairly busy but no queues. Strangely it was evident that the service was slow from the off. We were shown to a table with the menus and left. I was conscious that our table hadn’t been wiped down with a coffee ring and sugar granules from a previous customer, but no returning waitress. After about 15 mins our order was taken and coffees arrived fairly quickly. The cooked food took longer and with the open kitchen it was evident that the chef was working through orders methodically. I watched with interest his ‘ping’ of the bell when orders were ready to go out- yet no waiting staff came to collect. Some meals (ours included) were under the lamp for a good few minutes with additional orders stacking up on the hot plate. The repeated ‘ping’ of the bell drawing no one to deliver the food. Consequently when we finally got our food the poached eggs were hard boiled and the meal was dry. By now the cafe was getting very busy and the service began to disintegrate around us. Both adjacent tables having to ask after their orders, food arriving before drinks, half orders delivered. The waiting staff were in disarray, walking around aimlessly, profusely apologising for the delays and generally not taking control of the situation. Without exception they looked miserable and disengaged from the job. Whether this is weekend staff only, or a tranche of new staff I’m not sure, but it tainted our visit and was a disservice to the kitchen team who were prepping food in a timely way, only for it to sit and wait for an eternity to actually be served.

Update 2024 We had the sharing seafood platter. Just lovely, with a really nice sauce. Attentive service, and a chilled atmosphere. Perfect. First visit 2022 A sweet place to eat with a sea view. We had the fish sharing plate with a side of vegetables. On the plus side, nice prawns, and very polite, friendly service. On the down side, knives forgotten, paper towels forgotten, water forgotten, butter forgotten, table very dirty. To be fair it was a very busy day, but even so maybe have someone working on keeping things clean and well stocked. Had a takeaway coffee later, and that was super. Staff kind, polite and thoughtful, and excellent coffee done exactly as asked.

We've been here a few times now, and always had a good experience until today. I ordered a tagliatelle pasta dish from the lunch menu but unfortunately quite a few bits of the pasta were hard and dry, as if it had been heated badly in a microwave. My children had carbonara and pasta with a tomato sauce, both of which were extremely rich - far too much cream and cheese. They both only had a small amount before stopping, and when I tried some of each I was very surprised to find them sickly. I couldn't manage much myself. Not good at all unfortunately, especially for children. We'll still come back, but I hope the chef/s make changes.

So, I just want to start by saying that this is one of the worst dining experiences that I've had in my whole life. From terrible service right to the food. It took them about 20 minutes to sit my group even though it was empty and not a rush hour. The waitress had a massive attitude problem and was just being difficult and not understanding. We waited around 30 minutes for our food only to find that our ticket didn't get processed and then another 30 minutes for them to finally bring our food out... only for it to be bland and cold! I highly recommend going someplace else if you're in the area.

Arrived at 8:40am to be told the outside area was closed so we had to sit inside. We thought this was fair enough until a family arrived less than 5 mins after us and they were told by a different member of staff that the outside area was closed until 9am but they could sit out there and wait. Not sure why we weren’t offered the same. After looking at the menu, we decided to just have toast and a tea each. We only wanted something light and there wasn’t many options for this. 3 slices of toast came out with 2 small butters and 1 tiny jar of Marmalade. If you like to spread all this extremely thin then this would be fine, we on the other hand like more than a paper thin coating. At £5 for 3 slices of toast, at least 2 jars and more butter would be appreciated. For the prices on the menu I’d also expect the crockery not to be chipped and the cute little milk bottle was also chipped. I’m also not sure about the big wet dogs that had clearly been in the sea that were allowed inside the cafe. Fine for the outside area however inside was not nice. If I had to say something positive, the view was lovely.

First time at this modern looking and well located beach-front restaurant/cafe. Staff were very friendly and generally helpful - with 2 in particular setting themselves aside in their ability to engage and communicate with the customers. There was loud beat music playing, which didn't help much if you wanted to sit, eat and talk to your friends - rather than dance or look at your phones. Menu was ok and not overly extensive - which is good. It made reference to chefs specials but sadly, we were never offered those! Prices seemed ok but for what we were actually served was probably on the high side. Starters arrived promptly but the mains took a fair while but not excessive. When the mains arrived, you couldn't believe the difference in portion sizes - I thought my Swordfish was a starter and when I asked if anything accompanied it - the answer was a disappointing No! Bring out the trusty old bowl of chips then - which were very nice if a little on the oily side. 3 of us had fish and all of us agreed it was dry and overcooked, but I can recommend the rib of beef - It looked great and I am told, was delicious! Just avoid the Swordfish dish - really disappointing in size and delivery. I might try this cafe again for a lunch or breakfast - on a nice day you can't beat looking out to sea. I was tempted to give it a 4 star but it just fell short on the food & attention to detail...and music. Sadly - nowhere close to a 5 on this visit.

Been coming here for years and love it but it’s got to be careful. Where is the management? It’s a great business set up but is in danger of losing traction through poor management. Previously food has been variable but more recently truly excellent. Today the food was good. The service however was completely disorganised. Not too busy. Plenty of staff but 3 were very obviously young and inexperienced. No guidance being given. The cutlery and condiment holders on all of the tables were in a sorry state and no one was concerned. Service was ad-hoc. We didn’t even get the tap water we asked for when order was taken (and written on a pad). The salt and pepper were missing and the ones we retrieved were dirty and sticky. There’s no need for this when there are staff wandering around lost for something to do. Come on please Beach Cafe - we want to be your biggest supporters!

Rude staff. We approached the cafe because the shutters were open and whilst looking at the ice cream, heard the girls bitching about something and swearing which I actually thought was quite funny even if a bit unprofessional. The girl with curly dark hair then said ‘we’re closed’ in quite a rude and to the point tone and I asked ‘even for ice cream?’ You know, just in case! And she said ‘well no, that’s the whole point’ in a sarcastic way which was unnecessary. I then said ‘there’s no need to be rude, it’s not very good customer service’ and she appeared to hide behind a machine on the left, weird. Anyway, super off putting. Won’t be coming here again! The view is beautiful, it wasn't busy when we arrived. There were a few dirty tables. Menus arrived and a drinks order taken. Food ordered shortly after that and we asked for everything to come altogether, the corn riblets arrived and that was it, the rest of our order was nowhere to be seen. Trying to get the attention of the waitress, we gave up. After finishing the riblets it took approximately 45 minutes for the mains to arrive, we asked for condiments and we're given a mayo and ketchup with very little in them, we had to speak to the waitress as our chips were cold and she returned with fresh ones. I had to go and get more ketchup from a waitress station. My partner could not eat her gammon and eggs as the eggs were cold and "snotty", the waitress could see the untouched plate at our table and did not approach. My partner had to ask her to remove the plate and advised of the issue. We asked for our bill and was advised the dish was removed from the bill which we thanked her for. Usually the food and service is exceptional, however on this occassion it failed to hit the mark.

So I have to say, the view is gorgeous from the restaurant. We had a very good waiter, but after she knocked off, we had other waiters who I had to ask to please give us cutlery to eat our food with and then sauces, and when we wanted dessert, we had to call as well. So that wasn't very nice. The food selection is very minimal, every dish contains fish except for about 3. And the items are not common things one would eat. It also didn't taste great and the brownie was burned on one end. Extremely pricey as well and food just was not worth it. Frkkels are just a load of batter that has been over fried and tastes of just oil. Also enquired about entertainment and was met with a line that summed up that the conversation was closed, so that wasn't very nice either.

The standards here have sadly fallen - the amazing SBC Eggs Benedict which used to come with the most delicious homemade potato rosti and fresh hollandaise sauce, comes now with a flimsy muffin and a vile sriracha sauce which I saw the chef squeeze from a bottle - cold - all over my entire dish. There were mini rostis available as a side, so I ordered those as I'm gluten intolerant and didn't want the muffin - I was served 4 mini hash browns, deep fried and as though they were from a cheap catering wholesaler. The place was half empty at 10am on a sunny Saturday, when usually we'd be waiting for a table. I wonder if they are already losing their previously loyal customers...

Really nice food, great location and atmosphere - very patchy service. I visited twice, as once was on a busy Saturday so thought the service might have been down to this, but the second time was on a Tuesday when the restaurant was fairly quiet. Both times an item has been missing from the order and took quite some time to be replaced. On the first visit it was a drink, and by the time it arrived the other guest had finished theirs and was ready to order another. We also asked for an extra piece of bread whilst eating, which arrived once the meal was finished. On the second visit, a main meal was missing (we only ordered for two people). It took awhile for the member of staff to check whether it had been ordered or not and then didn’t come and let us know. We were offered side plates to share the main while we waited for the other on a ‘rush’ order, which took so long we almost decided just to cancel it. It’s a shame, because as I said the food is delicious and it’s such a lovely location. But the service does let it down.

We asked if we could order a breakfast/brunch but were told they had stopped taking breakfast/brunch orders. 20 minutes later our drinks order was taken and we then waited a further 15 minutes before it was brought to us. We asked if we could order lunch but were told they were still not taking lunch orders. When we asked why the waitress said she had to wait to be told when she could start taking orders. This was now 12.35pm. The whole time we were sat, more more people were being seated. We were aware other people weren't happy about the wait and they began to complain. By 12.50pm we were aware that two tables of people who had arrived after us were having their orders taken. The waitress then walked right past us with no interaction at all. At this point we paid for.our coffee & left. We are really disappointed as we'd been looking forward to eating here.

We're coming from east midlands, my phone was discharged, there were multiple type of chargers, but the waitress did not allow me to use them. Humanity rates are zero.

I was there last week with my mum and we had a wonderful experience. It is a little bit on the pricier side but we had a really sweet server (Alba) and the weather was lovely. Will be coming back.

Was looking for a small snack with a cup of tea. Only breakfast or large desserts to be had. Wasnt allowed to sit where we wanted either because we had wanted a snack which in end didnt have as nothing available. Worst part however was the state of the crockery and milk bottles. Milk was delivered in a filthy bottle that hadnt been cleaned properly for ages. Teapot spout was badly chipped and brown with staining, same as saucers too. Very poor and would look elsewhere for a mid morning snack.

We were so disappointed!!! Not the type to write a bad review especially if they are a small business but felt so bad for the people around us and we felt so let down after being so excited to come here. I regret coming here and taking my partner here, wish we'd gone elsewhere. Must have gone downhill lately as I see there are good reviews on here Waitress was quite blunt throughout and not very welcoming at all, might have just been tired or had a hard day (I get it) but we felt like such a burden :( Food was absolutely cold - not just cold as in warm but still edible - the very top layer was slightly warm as if it was left under a warming plate after being out a few hours. Stone cold with a layer of lukewarm over the top. Both partners food and mine was congealed, hard, not good at all :-( all in all two main meals + 2 soft drinks nearly £50... So disappointed as feel we paid for quality and didn't receive it. Felt uncaring like those involved must have known it was cold and poor quality? After food was brought out no staff seen for 45 mins, we aren't the type to complain but would have asked them to heat it up a bit more if we'd had the chance. Quality of food was poor - pasta wasn't seasoned or fresh, onion peel in it, made worse by it being so cold. We had to wait about 45 mins for the bill, which in the end we went up and asked for because no staff around, went inside towards the kitchen and saw waitress sat at a table on her phone ... Might have been a one off, I get that we see things out of context and I know bar and FOH staff work so hard, but when the place wasn't that busy and there's tables outside waiting, maybe just a "hey sorry for the wait we'll be with you in a bit" would have been fine.. we get it totally that you've got to be patient and we were ok chattiing while we wajted but felt so utterly forgotten about to be honest. Nobody asked if we wanted anything else or asked how the food was or really said anything at all, felt like we weren't wanted and were taking up space. By the time we'd gone up and got our bill and paid, we could only see one waitress who was busy, we waited a few mins hoping to speak to her but she disappeared so we left. Food was rubbish, service wasn't good (again we're not looking to be doted over but just basic communication and a bit of kindness!) My partner has had a rough week as we've had some recent bad news as a family, we had a lovely walk along the seafront and food was meant to cheer him up and instead we came away feeling pretty uneasy and so very disappointed.

First time eating in the Cafe and though the staff were friendly and the food ( when it eventually came out) was nice enough the wait time was ridiculous. It took nearly an hour to get a burger and a chicken sandwich. Sadly we weren't the only ones the 2 table around us had both asked how long we were waiting for as they took had been waiting along time. They had plenty of servers in the cafe but can't comment on kitchen staff. After this experience I won't be in any rush back!

Poor service from this cafe, we were left waiting 45 minutes for poached eggs and toast! Two other tables came in after us but received their food before we did. We complained to a member of staff who said they had a new tech system, I would recommend that the new system should have been better tested prior to going live! We won’t be back, fortunately there are other options on Southsea seafront we will use in future.

Visted on Saturday 18th for a coffee and breakfast. Waited around 10 minutes to be shown to a seat, finally got sat down and after about half an hours wait we tried to order some food only to be told its a 45 minute to an hours wait, so we just ordered a couple of coffees, after another 15 minutes of waiting and no coffee's we just got up and left. Extremely poor service, don't allow people to come in if your unable to cope with a high demand of people on a lovely sunny day. Hope it's better service next time.

Some friends and I went for the Christmas bottomless brunch, Staff 10 out of 10 they were great! Attentive, postive attitudes and smiley.. the festive brunch. It was okay. Nachos were good, the potatoes were nice, but the turkey bites a little dry, and - the wrap- it’s a little bit bland and dry - it could do with a little seasoning and a gravy dip would be the perfect finisher! The cocktails - lovely all of them!!

Had a lovely brie and cranberry panini and cappuccino from here, but unfortunately staff quite distracted by justeat orders, didn't get any form of greeting when walked in, had to wait facing someone's back until they were ready to turn around. When paid just put the amount it and walked off, no eye contact or thankyou! Would get a higher rating if customer service was better as the food was nice.

I have been visiting the Poppins Café in Cosham occasionally for many years. What I like about the place is the consistence of what you get… If you like the food, they serve you are sure to get the same time and time again. It is quite a large café and can seat lots of people. The staff are always extremely polite and attentive. Your food order is delivered in a reasonable time. If you are arriving by car there is some free parking (1 hour max) close by, which is good. The spaces are limited so it is a bit of a lucky dip. I will continue to visit from time to time. Some of my reviews may seem unforgiving but I come from a time when everything was not “Awesome” and “near enough was not good enough”. So, if I say something is “Excellent” that is because it is somewhere better than most others… and well worth considering visiting. I hope this review was of help, please consider following my travels & reviews in the autumn of my life.
