Oh this place is amazing! The food incredible and the staff super friendly. Had the aubergine masala - absolutely delicious. At points during our meal the lady serving was run off her feet and we just gave her a wave to catch her attention and she was there as soon as she could be, with a smile and the order pad 😀. Don’t know how she managed to keep up! They were busy but we did not feel pressured after the meal, so we indulged in some delicious cake! Cannot recommend highly enough.

I have been to South Square Cafe numerous times over the years and have always been very pleased with the excellent food, and friendly attentive staff. However, on Sunday 21st April 2024, l popped in for some lunch, and was extremely disappointed by what happened. I arrived at 14:50, and, after viewing the menu board, found a seat by the window and waited for someone to take my order. I said hello to the young heavily tattooed woman who was serving people their food and drinks. She saw me come into the cafe, and said hello back, so surely she should have made a mental note to come and take my order. Sadly, this was not the case! As the place was reasonably busy, l didn't want to hassle her, so l just waited patiently. I waited, and waited and waited ... Eventually l decided that she had either chosen to ignore me, or more likely, had totally forgotten all about me. In disgust, l finally got up to leave. I was not very happy. I had waited twenty five minutes, and she hadn't even come to take my order or said, I'll be with you shortly. On my way out, l saw her sitting at a nearby table wolfing down a very tasty looking meal. She looked up and saw me, and so I said to her... "You could at least have come and taken my order, l've waited patiently for twenty five minutes in there." The expression on her face was very revealing! She realised, but didn't utter a word. Not even an apology, or anything! Need l say more! What a great shame, because l have always praised this place very highly to lots of people. If you are planning on going, might l suggest that you take a few sandwiches as back up to eat later, just in case you receive the same treatment as l did!

Food was delicious ! We wanted our food to take out as didn’t have time to eat in so they prepared it to take out for us . we had 2 Mexican bean wraps which they partially cooked and wrapped in tin foil & said to just pop in oven when we got in to finish off & our salads were boxed in cardboard tubs which I was glad wasn’t plastic . It was lovely & definitely would go again little more pricy than other places I’ve been but I think it was worth it .

Called into to our local veggie cafe in 200 year old Thornton village south square buildings. (Thornton is the original birthplace if brontes before they moved up the road to Haworth). This time I tried the Iranian stew a spicy dish with chunky sweet potatoes Cous cous and sliced pears and chunky brown bread on the side. My wife had the home made feta and sweet potato quich (large portion) with side salad filling the plates nicely. I washed mine down with a nice Mocca. At around £20 altogether pretty good value too.

Every time we visit, we love the atmosphere of this place. It feels cosy but also very calm. The food is always good too! Loved our Wensleydale and apricot chutney sandwiches and the apple crumble cake was heavenly! The coffee they serve Dark Woods is one of the best in West Yorkshire and they serve it beautifully here. Just a shame we live a little way from it! Hope to be back soon!

This was once our all time favourite café. Since it changed hands we have ventured in four times and now accept it is the place for a coffee, pot of tea, or home-made fruit juice. The service is excellent, the venue clean and pleasant, and finding an empty table is not a problem - mid-week it is near as deserted - a fact that says it all. Cakes are not mentioned because the choice and quality has changed. On each occasion we have struggled to get them down with copious cups of tea. Main meals are more expensive than they once were, prices obviously change, but the portions are a lot smaller and the choice not nearly as substantial, especially for a man with a good appetite. We are waiting for the old menus to be dusted off and the return of spicy bean enchiladas, vegetable pies topped with mash and/or pastry, jacket potatoes with numerous toppings, and the amazing salads that came with all meals and contained a little of everything - along with a touch of rice, pasta, new potatoes, the odd olive... We sincerely wish the new owners every success if only because we dearly want to become regulars once again. I am sure others will disagree but the owners know that footfall equals turnover and provides the truest picture.

Clearly popular with the locals we had to wait a while for a table to become free but our patience was rewarded as we thoroughly enjoyed a flavoursome, colourful and enticing falafel platter with a good helping of super chunky potato wedges and hummus. Another veggie place where you really do not miss the meat. Small and almost perfectly formed, this recently refurbished cafe offers interesting food based on local ingredients (including some traded from local domestic growers wiht an excess) that is handled rather well. My spinach/cheese/mushroom quesadilla was excellent and my wife was full of praise for the goats cheese and onion flan. Totally unpretentious and well worth a visit.

I visited here with my ancient and creaky old mother, and I was impressed to see that they remembered her from her previous visits. We had parked on the main road opposite the cafe, which has reasonable access for those with limited mobility. There is a chalkboard for the food that day; there was a good selection (ploughmans, meze with falafel, couscous salad etc.). Mains are about £7.50, soup is about £4 and there are a couple of lighter bites. We had the leek flan, and the meze. Both were fresh, very tasty and well presented. There's a choice of drinks including homemade cordials. With very friendly staff, delicious food and priced right, what's not to like. I'm not a vegetarian but I'll definitely be back, and so will my ancient creaky old mother.

Love this cafe, a true gem and fantastic for veggies and meat eaters alike. Not many places around that are solely veggie so this is a little gem. As a vegetarian myself I love the fact that I can have anything on the menu and not be worried that there may be something horrible lurking in my food which has happened to me numerous times at other places where they have one or two veggie choices. Great value for money the pineapple fizz or hot chocolate are my favourite drinks. Always very welcoming to children and babies even when they are having a proper tantrum. The toys and books in the corner definitely help.If I had any criticism at all it would be that the loos are a bit cold to baby change in, as they are across the courtyard outside. My mum came up to Yorkshire to take my husband and I out for a birthday meal. After a bit of research I settled on the vegetarian cafe at South Square in Thornton, Bradford. The menu was pretty standard, with a selection of sandwiches, baked potatoes, etc, but the specials board was what really caught my eye. All the vegan options were clearly labelled on both menus.I opted for the Mediterranean Vegetable Crumble, which was lovely. There was a nice selection of vegetables, and the savoury crumble was delicious. I think my dessert was named as a Berry Slice, and it was effectively another crumble, only sweet this time! It was gorgeous, and came with soya cream - YUM! (This was the only vegan cake option but, oh my, it was a good one.)We found the prices very reasonable, and decided that it's definitely somewhere we would like to come back to. As well as the food being tasty and good value for money, the cafe itself was a lovely place to be. It was cosy, with enough tables to make good use of the space but not so many that it felt crowded, and art on the walls. It was also nice to look around the gallery and craft shop.

My son had a spicy bean burrito, I was asked if he wanted chips or salad, when I hesitated she suggested half and half, which he was really pleased with, I had a vegetable and Stilton flan with salad. The salad is amazing, the best I've had in a cafe. Was really tempted to have one of the many homemade cakes but as the main portion was so generous, I couldn't have fitted it in. It was a cold rainy day but the cafe was really warm and cosy, also really relaxing background music. Noticed a sign that on occasional Fridays it is open in the evenings and you can take your own wine, so might try that next time. Will definitely visit again soon.

I love this cafe, the food is lovely and the service is great! Everything is homemade and fresh, and the salads are lovely. The prices are a little bit more than the average cafe but for the great quality you get, it's worth it. Never had bad food here, highly recommend!

Despite living in Thornton all my life (29 short years) I had never visited south square cafe. I normally get put off by vegetarian places due to the lack of meat but was recommended south square by a friend who is also a meat lover. Currently on maternity leave I am now a lady who lunches so I decided to give it a go. I had the toastie of the day, it was brie and onion chutney, yum! I had a side of surfer chips (cheesey chips to you and I) and my friend had a side salad that she raved about. I was pleasantly surprised. I will be going back, especially for a pudding! Can't believe there is such a culinary gem on my doorstep that I have missed out on for so many years of carnivorous closed mindedness!

I ate lunch here recently and cannot fault the place. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff very friendly.I visited as a party of three and the food arrived very quickly. I went for the mushroom enchilada which was mouth watering whilst my companions opted for the flans which they described as delicious. The accompanying salad was crisp and was a great combination of leaves , coleslaw , pasta , olives etc.If you have any space left then you must definitely try the cakes on offer they are heavenly !!

Fabulous little place ... A bit tricky to find and no parking really but well worth that small bit of hassle for gorgeous humongous plates of veggie fare for very little money ....Thornton seems to be a bit of a quirky bohemian side of Bradford and I would describe this cafe/restaurant in the same way ...Delicious half chips and half salad ( half healthy) sides with home made quiches, enchiladas etc....All the carnivores with us were raving too at the wonderful food ... And not moaning about the lack of meat ...I also devoured a slice of carrot cake with ice cream ..... And finished off my friends left over date and apple slice ... Terrible ....My only slight criticism was the choice of music on their late night one Friday a month do ... A tad dirge like .... But everything else was marvellous ...

It's been here for over ten years and that says a lot about what the diners think about the food here. Vegetarian restaurants and cafes can be extremely vulnerable ventures as meat eaters will sometimes disregard them without even trying the food. After ten years of producing this honest , simple but nevertheless great tasting food it's time you gave it a try even if you are a meat eater. On a Sunday lunch time there can be up to seven freshly cooked options on the specials board . Everything from a dhal with potato wedges to a vegetable crumble served with some fantastic salads to a leek and Wensleydale quiche to buritos. Then there's lovely home made soup served with huge chinks of wholemeal bread and butter , filled baked potatos and other simple options. If there are children they will do smaller portions. With that amount of choice you are unlikely to be disappointed. What's more you know you are eating fresh food made with a passion by the owner. It also serves home made cakes - like the pear and plum slice. Added to this is the fact you are in a an historic place - the building is a series of restored stone masons cottages now housing galleries and a gift shop full of local crafts. You are also in the village where the Brontes were born and you can walk to take a look at the house within a few minutes. So put this on your list of places to visit and have a great lunch. It also opens once a month in the evening but booking is essential due to demand. During the day two courses and a hot drink would cost you about £11 a head

On a visit to Charlotte Bronte's birthplace we experienced hunger pangs and stumbled upon South Square Vegetarian Cafe. The place was quiet when we arrived (2.30pm saturday afternoon) and we enjoyed a nice lunch. They didn't have our first choice drinks but other than that I have no complaints.

Despite not booking on a Friday evening, and the place was heaving (it was a craft fare in the arts centre), they managed to find us a table for two. It was my second trip and well worth it! This is 'vegan heaven', as many of the dishes can easily be adapted. I had a cauliflower, tomato and potato crumble followed by an apple and cinnamon bake-both yummy! The service is welcoming and warm, the atmosphere is great and I only wish it were within walking distance, as I'd be there every day! You can tell everything is home made - this lovely veggie cafe proves that one can have healthy, nutritious food without compromising on taste.

Young lady who served me was lovely. Kitchen sent out wrong order had to wait a lot longer for my meal. The person who was with me had finished their meal before I got mine back. Jacket potato was cold and the same fried egg returned with rubber texture. Get a grip. Ilkley deserves better...
