Souters is a regular go to for us and we’ve enjoyed many breakfasts, lunches and dinners there. Food great as usual on this visit but poor service, staff attitude and general presentation on this occasion.

Travelled a fair distance to go to this restaurant for breakfast with our dog. We have been many times with and without our pet. Could not sit in the pet area because of a beer tent which had been on at the weekend. We were directed to the outside entrance of the restaurant and told that was the only place to eat breakfast with our dog. We only decided to stay because we had travelled a fair distance. We have never seen tables there before. It was cold and in a wind tunnel. It was so uncomfortable sitting there. If it had been lunch time and not breakfast, we would have went to another restaurant. It was embarrassing . The waitress was cheeky and rude. She informed me that it was a managers decision, put her hands up to indicate it had nothing to do with her and that was the only place to sit with the dog. I felt it was not a nice experience at all. My food got cold very quickly due where we were sitting. It was obvious we had been discussed with the other members of staff due to her attitude towards us when she came out with our tea. It felt so unprofessional . I only asked if there was some other place we could sit with our dog. Staff need to be more customer friendy and don't make people feel uncomfortable by talking and pulling faces to other members of staff. They say thats it a pet friendly restaurant but only if the weather is good and you can sit outside. They do not allow dogs inside in a designated area. Not a happy customer. Will look for a truly dog friendly restaurant that allows dogs inside during bad weather days and not just outside only.

Been here many times and it's been great and breakfast very good. Not so today. Soft fried egg, big problem. Dour faced waitresses made it (not) a joy to have gone there. Service good but would have liked our dirty plates removed.

Arrived with a work party and was delighted with this place. The decor is lovely, beautiful old thatched pub and inside is modern and fresh but also respectful of it's age and place. The food: A very strong menu with something for everyone. To start, I had a delicious prawn and salmon cocktail, which was so good, I didn't get to take any pictures. Followed by a 10oz sirloin, which was perfect and topped off with a lemon meringue pie, with raspberries and raspberry ripple ice-cream. The service was attentive and subtle, what more can I say - excellent. Now, this place is a little more costly - but 100% worth every penny. I would recommend to everyone, very impressive.

Mother's Day outing with whole family. My Wife left her cards from daughters and grandchildren behind. Phoned to ask if they had been found to be told "if you had left them they would have been put up to the bin". How is that for sentiment!! Meal cost £350. Very uncaring people. Won't ever go back. What would Burns have said about such callousness

Passed this restaurant many times but on our first visit today we had an excellent experience. Lovely welcoming bar, diner and shop with a roomy dining area and relaxed atmosphere suited to all occasions. Wide variety of menu choice for all the family and food was wonderful, large portions, well presented and delicious. We ended up having three courses instead of two, so good was the experience. Efficient and pleasant staff and service. Overall a gem of a place for any occasion- we’ll be back!

Dont sit next to the kitchen because it is too noisey and dont order the burger with fries BECAUSE it comes with chips. Apparently , this eatery doesn't know that there is a subtle difference between a chip and a frie in spite of them both being made from a humble potato, Nobody did the usual check back as in 'is if everything ok? and will not be back This place is quickly disappearing up its own ar"e. A little underwhelmed, food fine if a little pricey however puddings were fabulous. Busy afternoon a bit chaotic and staff didn’t look that enamoured to be there and definitely lacked enthusiasm, might be more atmospheric upstairs and in the evening, I felt we were sitting in a country kitchen with the main view being the food serving hatch! Tables seemed fairly close to each other, closer than I would have expected in the current climate. We were excited to bring our friends somewhere new but sadly we won’t be back.

We’ve been coming here for years for breakfast and lunch. Great food, friendly staff, lovely setting. One gripe is the prices have really jumped in the last year so we don’t visit quite as often. Would also love a healthy veggie lunch option. Ps the fish soup is a great favourite of my partner. Try it!

Booked a table for a birthday dinner far in advance - had asked for a good table, however we were sat at the bottom of the restaurant near the fire exit. The table next to us had children who they could not control, running around and nearly knocking our drinks over on numerous occasions. I realise this is not the fault of the restaurant but we actually had to move our table over when we arrived as we were far too close to them. Our waiter was unbelievably rude and did not utter more than two words to us during our dinner. No hello, no how are you doing just what you having? When our starter came he just put it down and walked away, I could not believe how bad the communication was. We finished our starter and again no communication, no how was your starter just took the plates away and that was it. Our drinks were near enough empty by this point and no offer of a refill. We continuously had to ask for drinks and when we did it was as if we were a problem. We asked for the bill off a different waiter (not on purpose she was just passing) who was nice and asked how our meal was etc. I did not complain to her as she had not served us during the meal, the man who did serve us came over and pulled the receipt from the card machine and walked off. No thank you, no nothing again. I did not tip when I usually do as the service during our meal was awful. The food was lovely, I have to say this as I was impressed by the food taste however the service was not good.I was so disappointed as we had heard such good things about Souter’s Inn. We had pre booked a taxi for 2 hours away and could not get one any sooner so we had to sit at the bar for this time and wait. Again, every time we needed a drink there was no offer by the bar staff.

Good food and service. Even better if you are a regular as they seemed to get plenty of chat and laughs and attention!Couldn't get my first choice of main and dessert, wee bit disappointing but it happens.Atmosphere busy but far too noisy - some people like the busy feel but it wasn't relaxing for couples. EG wooden chairs (with no felt on feet) scraped back and forward on a wooden floor by diners arriving and leaving.

Am so sorry to write this review but i have to be hoenst When we arrived staff couldn't of been any nicer cant fault them at all.me my husband and mum had a table pre booked.Orderd 2 soups of cauliflower soup totally tasteless just taste like a bowl of cream. No butter portion with the bread! Ok we can forget a butter portion ..the mains lol 12.95 for macaroni really???? My mother got the steak pie which looked like scotch pie. Filled with zero steak and 4 cubes of sausage The pie was so over heated it had dried out disgusting!my husband got sea bass 16,.95 for a tiny peace and 2 pieces of vegetables disgrace. Come on guy weve ate here a few times this is very disappointing. We had no salt or pepper on table had to ask twice for spoons for the soup. Your sweet menu looked appealing but after the first 2 courses we descided not to spend a penny more.your prices are ridiculous i can't justify paying 12.95 for a macaroni cheese .am sorry to say i wont ever return sort your prices out

Have eaten here before a few times and I would say it's not as good as before. The toast did not come until we asked for it, which was after they served the main breakfast. To me, they had forgotten to take the toast out to us. I find that strange as they took the butter out and 15 mins later the breakfast came, between which staff had walked past the table several times and the restaurant only had one or two other tables dining. It might just be me but If I was working there I would notice that the table had butter sitting there and no toast, whether I took the butter out or another staff member. Apart from that the black pudding had a very strange artificial taste to it. I would describe it as across between plastic and a cheap perfume. I felt a bit at odds to mention it in case I sounded crazy. But I asked the person I was dining with and she also noticed this strange taste and never ate hers. For the sake of a couple of £10-odd breakfasts I did not see fit to complain about a bit of toast and a foul tasting black pudding but I would not go back for breakfast.I would go back for the dinner or lunch menu if I was in the area.I would be interested If anyone else noticed this weird taste on the black pudding as have had breakfast here a couple of years ago and I do not recall that strange taste.

I have taken a while to write this post as I wanted to give the company some time to respond to the feedback I provided privately to them- however that was a number of weeks ago and I have heard absolutely nothing. We popped in for a quick bite to eat before going down to turnberry. We sat at the bar and there were two elderly women already seated. The staff member came over (who I presume was the manager) and asked for our drinks order - one of the elderly ladies beside us politely said excuse me we were here first and the waiter said I’ll come to you. He took our order then went to the ladies who placed their order. He then said you know patience is nice and the lady said sorry we were here before them and the waiter then had a severe reaction he literally started shouting at them saying the customer is not always right you know and shouting no no no over and over at them. It make our experience extremely uncomfortable and awkward and the rest of the staff members just looked down. There were at number of witnesses to this (staff members) so I would suggest an investigation and training be carried out with this individual as he is not representative of the Costley brand. I will not go back there which is a real shame as we love costley places only last week we were at highgrove house for lunch. Point on the food is it was very nice but experience really was ruined.

Having not been for a while my father and mother in law took my wife & I for lunch. All started very well until my wife’s lunch appeared. She had ordered the ham & cheese sandwich. When it arrived the bread was not fresh (or had been left under a heat lamp) and the cheese was hard around the edges. The filling was some what lacking, a single slice of the thinnest sliced ham we have every seen. No one came near the table despite my wife trying to gain their attention several times until the waitress came to clear the plates. We advised her of the poor sandwich to which she replied she’d get a manager to speak to us. We sat for another 5-10 minutes & decided to get up & pay. Only then did someone speak to us. It certainly appeared to be inconvenient that we wanted to speak to someone as the manager scuttled behind the bar & the other lady said she’d taken the drink off the bill. Fab some sort of gesture that was until my father in law checked his receipt to find that NOTHING had been taken off. Follow up phone to them with the promise of a return call has so far proved fruitless! Very disappointing and will be along time before we are back down I am afraid. #poorcustomerexperience

We have been here many times, and the food is consistently very good, and service is usually excellent. However, on this busy weekend, my wife asked what was the soup of the day. Clearly irritated, the gentleman with the short cropped black beard said nothing, but simply pointed to the menu. He appeared truculent, and could be heard saying to the junior staff “Go, go, go !!” One waitress tried to explain her alleged inactivity, but was told “If you don’t like it , go home”. In many years of dining out, I have never experienced such rude, ignorant, and unprofessional behaviour. Mr Costley should have a word with him!

Food - average. Atmosphere - bit bland. Main reason for poor score was the behaviour of the Maitre’d. He started shouting at my son, who was pestering my husband for car keys whilst he was paying for the bill. I was just about to intervene and tell my child to stop when the maitre’d started having a go at him shouting very aggressively, a reaction that was totally over the top. I did email the company to complain about his aggressive and embarrassing behaviour but they ignored it. Yes my child needed to be told to wait a minute, but that’s my job, it’s certainly not a staff member’s job to shout at clientele’s child.

We were in the area visiting my father and decided to go back here as good food eateries are few and far between on the west coast. We walked in and the staff couldn’t have been less pleased to see us if they tried. The waitress pointed at our table and said bluntly “sit over there”. Despite it being 5pm and mostly empty, nobody was keen to take our order. I asked the same waitress (Scottish, long dark hair in a pony tail) if we could have table down the bottom where it was brighter and lighter, she looked at me like I’d landed from Mars. We decided it was more hassle than it was worth as she was so unaccommodating so stayed put. Only one member of our group of 6 wanted a starter from the set menu so as the rest of us wanted a main and a dessert from the set menu, I asked if their started could come out when the rest of us were having our mains, and then their main with our desserts. The same waitress completely misunderstood this and brought out both their starter and main at the same time. When I explained this was not what I had meant she rudely said “I don’t understand what you mean” and walked off in to the kitchen, no offer to take the main away to keep it warm, let along an apology!!! We were agog with her attitude!! We had asked her for sauces but she had no intention of bringing them and avoided our table for the rest of our meal. We later heard her talking rudely to another table of customers. The customer service was appalling and this person is in the wrong job if she can’t be accommodating to even polite customers (which we certainly were). The only saving grace is the owner who waited our table for the rest of the evening and was a delight. The food was delicious - couldn’t fault it, but ok the basis of the customer service, we won’t be going back. I can see that other reviews say the same. Real shame for this place.

Not our first time to visit but has been a while. Decided on a late evening supper on a Sunday. Food was overall fine but to be fair couldn’t go far wrong with a chicken schnitzel and frites and liver with potatoes. What was disappointing was the staff. Could they be more uninterested? So sad to see a Costley establishment has fallen to this level of service. Whilst the main irritation was the complete lack of engagement or interest, we were also experiencing a lack of follow through with no one really taking charge or interested enough to be caring whether our meal was ok. Firstly we ordered something and was told afterwards that fish not available, rather than apologise the waiter actually said so will you want to see the menu again?! We ordered water for the table with our wine. No water arrived. After the meal we ordered coffee and cheese board, cheese arrived but no coffee. The tables beside us were overflowing with dirty dishes whilst young inexperienced noisy staff stood around laughing. When we asked for the bill it arrived with drinks on it which were never ordered. All in all a disappointing visit, don’t think we will be rushing back

But..... there was no vegan option on the menu, so I asked if I could have the stuffed peppers without the cheese. No problem I was informed. The meal took a while to come as the restaurant was very busy, and that is not my criticism, but the peppers came with the cheese on top. It would have disrupted everyone’s meal if I sent it back so I scrapped it off myself. Surely one vegan option could be added to the menu to avoid this disappointment.

We arrived at 4.30 as we had our baby with us and were made very welcome, despite being the only diners at that point. The food was all lovely, reasonably priced and the restaurant is family friendly. Will be back!

The food is fabulous. I had a late lunch and shared 2 main courses with my friend. We had the macaroni cheese and the haggis, neeps and tatties with pepper sauce. We then had the creamed rice pudding and to finish handmade chocolates. This was a memorable visit thanks to the delicious food and excellent service. I want to go back soon!!! I recommend going.

We went out looking for a light lunch and found Souter Johnnies. This is owned by the same group where we had enjoyed Valentine's Night at the Lochgreen House Hotel.

Lovely Restaurant - was staying at Turnberry over New Year and went here for dinner one evening - restaurant was very busy when we arrived - tables very close together felt as though you where on top of one another - service was great, food was excellent, presentation was very good and selection was marvellous.

Three of us stopped in her as we were travelling through. We just had a small bit to eat and a little tea. Staff were pretty good and the food we did have was good also. Would like to try more, maybe next time I'm in Scotland.

Our party of 4 visited between Christmas and New Year and We all agreed the food was 5 * but the service, although not dreadful, didn't enhance the overall experience. In our case there was virtually no interaction between the staff and ourselves - we weren't really made to feel welcome, no recommendations, no pleasantries exchanged, no "enjoy your meal" etc. The main waiter we felt had a rather curt manner and on checking the bill we had been over charged for a couple of soft drinks. I said that it was probably a mistake by one of the waiters who was trying to use an iPad type device to take the drinks order and got a bit mixed up . Trying to make light of it I got no response from the waitress and no apology. I still gave a tip but again there was no real thanks. I know a lot of waiting staff are young kids trying to earn some money, especially at this time of year, but whoever is in charge of staff training perhaps needs to cover off some interactive skills. Service is not just about taking an order and putting the food down in front of you at a table. Would I return? Yes, due to the exceptional food but not for way we were treated.

Spur of the moment visit and we were lucky to get a table as there were several people turned away after we arrived. Piper was playing during our meal much to the delight of the Americans sitting adjacent. The food was excellent and was reasonably priced? The staff vey friendly if not a bit slow but the place was busy. Only complaint was that some of the seats are really uncomfortable, wooden farmhouse style.

My husband and daughter and I visited this restaurant last night 29th Sept 3017 having been recommended to go by Brunston Castle. As soon as we walked through the door, we felt welcomed and the atmosphere was lively and warm. Service was quick, food was fabulous (I had the delicious fish soup as a main course) and the girls who served us were friendly and professional. We'll certainly return when we revisit the area.

This busy restaurant is handy for us from Ayr and is very accessible being just on the main road and plenty of free parking. A great atmosphere and plenty of quality foods, ices, deli foods on offer in addition to the restaurant. We have been here about four times this year so far and never been disappointed. The staff are attentive without being 'in your face' and the menu choices are wide and varied. All food cooked to order and very well presented. This is one of the Costly chain of restaurants but don't be put off by the word chain as each of their outlets are bespoke and extremely well presented. Quality is the key word here without being too expensive. Definitely still recommended.

Looks traditional from the outside but is a great mix of new and modern. The staff are some of the best we have met, friendly and know the menu. Service is quick but very efficient.Menu is great and varied. All arrived hot and correct and was absolutely delicious. They looked after our wee grandson when he had a wee accident with his lollipop, they didn't have too but they did.The girl in charge of the ice cream parlour was great, giving us little taste of various flavours and we ended up buying loads. We run a bed and breakfast and this is now on our recommended list and we will be back soon.Give it a try, you will not be disappointed, promise.

We were staying at a friends holiday cottage in Ballantrae and she told us about Souter Johnnies Restaurant so we booked to go on the monday evening and found the menu extensive and quality of the food, the ambiance and service 1st class the only thing was I had a T-bone steak which was well cooked but lacked flavour. We liked it there so much we went back on the friday and once again the quality of the food, the ambience and service were excellent. I decided to try the sirloin which was cooked perfectly and obviously an exceptional piece of beef but I am sad to say that this also lacked flavour. Everything else my wife and I ate on both ocassions was top notch and we would have no hesitation in recommending it.

This restaurant was recommended to us and it did not disappoint. Luckily we went early in the evening as it soon became apparent that it was very popular and most people had booked in advance. The staff were attentive. My husband had the lobster special and I had stone bass, a fish that I had not had before, but it was delicious too. We even managed to squeeze in a dessert. A big Sundae and apple crumble (not sweet with cinnamon - again delicious) The restaurant looked so traditional from the outside but was a bit too modern and busy inside for my liking, hence the 4 stars, but the food gets 5 stars.

We went to this restaurant for an evening meal. The place was busy but the service was good. The choice of menu was quite large including a separate lobster menu. The portions were very generous and very tasty. The prices were very reasonable and if I am in the area again would certainly go back.

Returned here after a good experience last time. The food was nice but their 16oz TBone steak had clearly been weighed with a much bigger bone than the one that reached our table. Yes stems do shrink especially if ordering well done but, this seemed to have gone 2 rounds in a tumble dryer after being weighed but before reaching our table. But, very tasty and cooked to perfection! Pity we couldn't wait to leave because the seats are among the most uncomfortable I've ever experienced in a restaurant of this calibre.

Lovely little Scottish restaurant. We sent with friends who went there often. They had a curry dish and a chicken sandwich which they both said was good. My husband and I split a special of the day which was a lobster dinner for 2 which included their version of Bang Bang shrimp which was awesome!!! We also did a dessert special which had 7 scoops of ice cream - and yes we ate them all!!! It was a delightful place, and the only restaurant I've ever been to with a thatched roof.

lovely restaurant for a meal with friends we do not get to see too often.Food excellent and presented nicely too.Initial greetings and taking of orders fine but after that.....nothing. We were not asked if our order was to our liking...we were not offered a dessert, we had to summon a waitress who didn't seem to know how to work the "machine", and we were not offered coffee etc. Hence the 3*.Plenty of staff but not seemed to have their own tables to serve.

The sandwich was simple but nice enough. Tasty cheese and ham. The macaroni was awful. Cold sludge made from cheap ingredients. Possibly the worst I've had. The place itself is fine but they really need to review their catering. It could be so much better

Usually eat here and never had an issue. Today we called and waiting 15 minutes and not served. Approached the counter and older lady said it was table service and take a seat. (We knew this but had waited). Sat back down and waited nearly another 15 minutes and nobody took our order. We were walked past several times by staff and ignored. Left and went elsewhere. Really disappointed at being made to feel so embarrassed after others noticed clearly and those arriving after us were served. Will sadly not return as left to feel like we were deliberately being ignored. Completely embarrassing experience.

We live between Deeside and Dorset and rarely in Ayrshire but down for wedding and decided to go to Scott’s as knew the owners through business over 20 years ago when they just had a couple of places & heard a lot about their massive success . Honestly , we couldn’t fault it and … we eat out a lot . From a genuinely lovely welcome from Beth to excellent service from all the staff ( Isabelle was particularly charming & efficient ) - wonderful choice of menu , terrific cuisine and good value for money …. With a charming view . Some people look to find fault wherever they go but , we genuinely found Scott’s faultless ( inc toilets , decor etc etc ) . Absolutely SUPERB - 10/10- well be back and Soon 🥂

What a wonderful shop and cafe the hub of the local community. The manger Alex and Young worker Becca are fabulous such excellent customer service. I'm currently walking the entire UK coast path solo for the RNLI with my Big agnes tent Aggie since July 4th over 7,600 walked and I am staying at a campsite nearby yo rest a sore ankle. Wow I arrived and was treated like a local welcomed in offered coffee and cake. The atmosphere was heartwarming everyone happy picking up provisions hot food or stopping by for a chat. A lost dog was found and kept amd cuddled by a staff member till the happy owner arrived to claim his doggy ❤️ fully recommend this wonderful place. Thank yoy manager Alex 5 star .
