The Growler in South Ayrshire

We visited whilst staying at Trump Turnberry. We travelled into Ayr to avoid paying £10 a pint a Trump! A very lively bar, friendly staff who immediately offered to open up a tab, great range of beer including neck oil!

Knowledgeable and such friendly staff, great atmosphere and selection of beers + lovely food too. I will definitely be back!

My son (14) and I go here often for breakfast it’s delicious! Always the same standard too. Staff are amazing! friendly , attentive , chatty and polite.. atmosphere whenever I’ve been in has been relaxed with great music and always a pup or 2 to fussy over.

The Fruits de Mer dish was a standout, with a delightful mix of fresh seafood flavors that I highly recommend. And I must say, the tempura lobster was absolutely delicious - crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. A must-visit spot for both dog lovers and food enthusiasts in Ayr! I noted it was wheelchair accessible, with a ramp into the premises, plenty of space to move around inside the pub, and an accessible bathroom

Terrific pub in central Ayr. Good range of beer and friendly and welcoming staff.

The food couldn't be faulted here, especially the tuna steak that cooked to perfection, which is very rare. (sorry). The service was great, although the early evening sitting made that very easy. They accommodated our allergies and seating needs too with a smile and a welcome. I can't help but mention that the seating is harsh and the decor high sound reflective like so many places at the moment. This creates an echoing atmosphere that can make you feel loud and self conscious, and a wee bit battered if you are sensitive. Otherwise though highly recommended.

Big thumbs up from us. Menu, staff, service and atmosphere. Menu is varied and exciting. Staff are engaging and attentive. Service is quick and efficient and the atmosphere is laid back and welcoming. Wish we lived nearby we'd definitely be regulars for food or a pint and nibbles.

I don’t understand the ‘GRIND DRINK COOK EAT’ sign

The food is to die for and many different dishes too. You can have a lobster or mussels or a perfectly cooked steak or brilliant pasta or curry. Light lunch menu also available. The desserts are really great. Drinks menu covers a wide range, most cocktails are £8. Really good choice of craft beers. The service is professional and nice. It's quite loud inside, we had to shout around table of 6.

Nice bar in Ayr. Good choice of beer, but prices are pretty steep. The barmaid had to ask someone who had a yapping dog to leave. Much appreciated.

Brilliant choice of beers and cocktails.

I recently phoned up and complained about the kitchen staff smoking right below my office window at the rear of the restaurant. It is pretty constant and not just cigarettes, occasionally I can smell weed. I didn't think it was an unreasonable request to ask them to move away from my window when smoking. But no.... when I phoned up, it was the owner who answered. He summoned me down and told me I should speak to my Landlord and request a new office if I didn't like the smoke. Totally unreasonable.

Service was horrific. Waited over an hour and 20 minutes for food and when food did arrive some was missing. On top of that with the food being delivered so late for a quick meal it was also way over priced for what service we were provided with. Do not recommend!

Brilliant place. Fantastic, chilled-out atmosphere, lovely staff, great selection of beers. Lots of brews from Overtone, my favourite.

Foods good enough but a bit pricey

This is the only place I know where they charge the same price for any of their craft ales. At the moment, they have most beers from Overtoom (a Glasgow brewery) and all (from a 5% to a 10% beer) are priced at £4.25 for a half !! I think its £8 a pint so £8.50 for two halves is also an unnecessary mark-up. I love to promote craft ale bars but not at any price.

Came here for a few drinks with my wife and a couple of family whilst visiting Ayr for a wedding. Really great service and good atmosphere. Good selection of beers and my wife said the espresso martini was the best one she ever had !

One of the best restaurants in England. The service is excellent, the food is very very good, the staff is very polite and very pleasant. I am delighted with visiting this restaurant.

First time here but I'd go back. The service was really good. Personally I felt the portion sizes a little too much. Perhaps half portions could be a feature for those with smaller appetites. It was very quiet the night we were in but I can imagine the atmosphere being good. Would recommend.

City centre burger joint. Nice burger on chopping board. However was not worth the £20 cost, £50 for 2 cheese burgers and chips, pint and half lager. Good service, however bench seating. Plus point was this establishment was dog friendly, which is why we dined there.

Excellent meal on Saturday night. We both had a burger which was great quality. The staff are so nice here, very friendly, service is fab. We enjoyed it so much we returned today for brunch which was very tasty.

We needed somewhere to talk business...somewhere to have coffee (coffee served in tiny poncey cups and over priced...sooo old fashioned).. and somewhere to grab something to eat.....¡¡BINGO!! Parked easily by the cinema, crossed at helpful traffic light crossing and strolled straight in to the Growler. 3 adults and a big dog. All welcomed and allowed in. Place was light, clean and comfortable. We got some fresh water for the dog and ordered our orders. Service was great, polite and quick. (All comments are based on a quiet sunny afternoon). Toilets were clean and tidy I have no opinion of recycling for here..

I don’t often feel compelled to write reviews but today I felt I simply had to. The customer service my son and I received from Ellis the waiter was fantastic! He was very accommodating of my son’s food intolerances (which can make eating out a bit of an endurance). Ellis listened to my son’s needs and tailored the meal perfectly! Such a lovely guy whose level of attentiveness was spot on. Oh, and the food was great, too.

Looked at their menu and swiftly moved on. Laughable/ridiculous prices for Burgers. Inflated prices don't attract custom, regardless of what the owner might think

£7.50 for a pint of helles lager , thought that’d include the price of a flight to Munich . Sorry but your ripping folk off maybe if your prices were lower , your pub would be busier .

Tried The Growler for the first time tonight. Got the meat feast sharing board, food was amazing, steak was cooked to perfection. Staff were really friendly. Definitely recommend

Living in Jersey in used to over priced menus, however I struggle with £20 for 6 oysters!! Family meal. My parents both ordered the panko fried chicken. An hour later we were still waiting. Panko chicken arrived and was dark brown with very dry chicken and clearly over cooked. When the manager arrived ( I’m assuming as he didn’t say who or what he was) he then tried to justify “that’s how it’s cooked”. Sadly a lesson in customer service required and sadly a reason not to return. In the present climate where people are struggling. A meal out should be enjoyable and pleasant. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Just had an amazing meat platter dinner at The Gowler!! Great food, great staff, great cocktails AND dog friendly!! Can't recommend it highly enough!! Best dinner out I have had in months!!

Came here for some breakfast My small breakfast was fine 'happy to swap out items etc. My partner had the big breakfast - everything seemed fine until he got to the fried tomato /mushroom - he couldn't swallow them, not sure if it was the oil or something. Pancakes with maple bacon and banana first pancake was fine - I assumed that you would have got maple syrup to pour or for the pancakes underneath to be covered. 2 pancakes underneath were dry. Just wasnt great, unfortunately. Bill was also a shock - £45 for 2 breakfasts/2 coffees and pancakes seems alot to me. Service was fine and atmosphere was nice too.

First ever visit for lunch, very quiet inside but waited a while for menus and then again for a server to come. Food was ok, but expensive for what it was. The wrap was warm and greasy. Sorry, not sure I would come back for food .

Classy venue with a brilliant menu .....the Eggs Benedict is exceptional. Top marks to staff who are always smiling and attentive.

Decided to pop in before going to the cinema. What a delight, staff were friendly and very attentive, both drink order and food order were quick and the Food ..??? 👍Amazing 👏. Both Starter and Main meal were 1st Class. Definitely be back. Job well done all round. 👍

Great place to pop onto when we are in ayr, we both had breakfasts and they were great. Staff are very happy to help, and brought a wee bowl of water for our dog. We will very back

We had a fillet steak with pepper sauce and a burger with lobster. Both were absolutely delicious! My steak was very good quality and cooked to perfection. Chips were crispy with light and fluffy centres. The man who served us could not have been more helpful. Highly recommend this great restaurant with food options for all tastes and a great drinks selection. Will definitely be back!!

This isn't a bad restaurant/bar, it really isn't. How the group can justify such differences in prices to the likes of Meridian and Ayrshire & Galloway though is not something I understand - very similar menus cooked in the same way. There's just not enough to make The Growler "special" enough to warrant the expense of going here unfortunately. It is nice to see a variety of guest beers although they too are on the expensive side.

Husband had a breakfast, egg overcooked, attention to detail, that's what people look at especially eggs Good service.

I visited 3 different nights in my stay. They have a good seafood menu and varied craft beers that I enjoyed very much. Best place I visited. I definitely would return again, and appreciated the service.

Very friendly staff, good food and nice beer!

Was staying in Ayr for a week, came here for some dinner on a Friday a few weeks ago. Ordered Chicken wings to start, followed by chilli lobster roll for the main. The chicken wings were ok, however the chilli lobster roll was very poor, hence the one star. The brioche bun was stale, hardly any lobster on the roll, hardly any chilli, my friend I was in with had the same & agreed it was terrible. For one portion of wings, 2 lobster rolls and some pints, there wasn't much change from £100. Left feeling very short changed & I'm shocked at why the reviews are so good for this place when they are charging premium prices for terrible food? I had a similar dish from the Ghillie Dhu across the road earlier this year and it was leaps and bounds better. As for the wings, I actually had better ones for half the price from the wetherspoons the following evening. Would not recommend.

The whole menu was over priced, we hoped the food would be worth it but honestly the food was average at best. I wouldn’t go back. The only positive I can say is that the chicken noodle bowl had a good amount of chicken. My husband said his burger was OK.

Breakfast with a pint canny whack it

Blown away! A menu that has something for everyone- breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch…and amazing local quality ingredients for those of us with more expensive tastes… local lobster, scallops, langoustines…All of this with local baking, craft beers and it’s a long time since I enjoyed such great friendly service - Jamie, Lauren, Abu and Gemma.

The place is nice, clean and being dog friendly is a massive plus. The issue is with the food. Everything looks like it's spot on but every time I've been the food has been bland, lacking seasoning and generally not worth the price paid. It's a shame because I like the environment a lot but the food is so lackluster I doubt I'll ever go back.

Really great find. Food was great...had the macaroni which was deceiving, as it looked a small dish but actually had a lot of eating. Was topped with an amazing cheesy crumb. Enjoyed the onion rings and salted fries. Wife loved the frozen strawberry daiquiri so we will be back. Thanks

Having had a busy morning we ended up at The Growler at 13:45 and vied the lunchtime menu which was available until 14:00. The restaurant was virtually empty and we asked if the menu was still available. The waitress said Yes and she would bring us the menu. I went to get drinks, which although expensive, were much better than the usual ones. No menu, so I had to ask for one,but was given the main menu, not the lunchtime one. Almost on the dot of 14:00, the waitress reappeared and we asked for items from the earlier menu. She looked at her watch, but I pointed out that we arrived 15 minutes earlier, had asked if the menu was available, but had not been given a menu as promised. Anyway she agreed to get the meals we requested. They were slow in arriving (and the place was virtually empty), but they were very well cooked, tasty and filling. Now, if I was a suspicious person, I might think that they deliberately waited until 14:00 before taking our order - possibly thinking we might order from the main (more expensive) menu . Although the food and drinks were good, but the price and the service would discourage me from returning - should I be in Ayr again.

the noodles were those freeze dried ones that you find in the supermarket, the soup was sub par water and soy, the veggies were all raw? why, just blanch the bok choi at the very least, onions raw, green beans raw, bok choi raw, a tonne of pickled ginger in the bowl, eh no!! ginger is a palate cleanser and should be separate. The only saving grace was the half of a boiled egg, which I do love in my Ramen... however that was one very expensive half boiled egg at £12.50 ish. Please noone mistake this for Ramen, which when done well is awesome. Chef you can youtube a recipe for pretty authentic RAMEN, this was an abomination.

Hubby and I are from the USA. We rode a local train from Glasgow to Ayr, and found this place as we were walking from the train station to our inn. We had great service from Jaimie, yummy food, well made bar drinks, and oh...some great music in the background! I recommend highly, and will return when back in the area.

Great place in Ayr for a pint or a taster flight. The staff were super friendly and the service was great. Nice selection of different beers so there is something for everybody's tastes. Order the halloumi fries and Mac & Cheese with bacon and black pudding; they were both delicious! If you are in town I highly recommend a visit!

There are so many decent/better alternatives in the local area. Says it ALL. We, and others well know the history of the less than charistmatic owner.

Had lunch here and although the food was all beautifully presented, it just didn't taste of much. I had a Buddha bowl which was incredibly dry. Service was okay.

The food was pretty tasteless. I ordered the Thai Red Curry, I'm almost sure the chicken is bought pre-cooked. The sauce was bland and the rice was like mush. The food looked great when it arrived... I think this my be a food preparation kitchen rather than a real kitchen, you know... microwaved and then some fresh veg fired on top. My wife got a veggie dish and it looked so dry. It wasn't a terrible visit but it wasn't good. The waitresses were nice although you could tell they were short of experience... I wouldn't go back though.

We eat here frequently both for brunch and dinner. The food is exceptional and the service is great, the staff are always very pleasant, the selection of drinks is vast with some great craft beers and a great selection of gins. I would highly recommend this place to anyone

Visited this place as it was dog friendly. Nice and clean inside. Staff very pleasant and attentive. The food I would say was a tad expensive for what you got. The southern fried chicken goujons were over cooked, tasteless and very poor chicken filling. The Mac and cheese was basic and served in a very small bowl. Don’t think I would visit again.

A very good local pub with a half decent selection of craft beer on tap. Had a burger which was also very good quality and the staff were friendly and never too far away to check up on you for more drinks.

Nipped in for a quick drink with my wife. £8 for a gin and £6 for a beer. Wow! Can’t see what would justify those prices. Won’t be rushing back anytime soon

Was not busy when I arrived to meet friends for lunch, but got busier the longer we were there. Good atmosphere, clean with cheerful and friendly staff. There is a brunch menu for breakfast till 2pm and a main menu which starts at midday. A wide range to choice from including vegetarian options. I had the classic burger which was homemade. Portions was very good and reasonably priced but does have a high end range of choices on the menu. A good place to meet and socialise with friend's and family.

Well looked after by McKenzie and Jamie, polite, kind and professional. Eggs Benedict delicious generous portion. French toast and Rooster wrap on day two, both delicious too. Dog friendly and a great place to visit and eat. Look forward to visiting again.

Currently in The Growler,came in for the brunch menu at 13:40 when it's on until 2pm,we were told the brunch was only on until 1pm. When tried to speak to a female member of staff about it she just snatched the menus from us and...

Really great food and good beer selection... But, absolutely awful service, to the point of rudeness. The staff on the floor don't seem to care at all. EDIT: Went back the following night (Sunday) much quieter and was served by a young guy with long dark hair, service couldn't have been better. Nothing was too much trouble! Night and day... So I've upped it to 4 stars... Would have been 5 but for the service on Saturday.

We had lunch at The Growler, and we were very happy with the quality of the food. I had a spicy egg dish with sour dough, and my husband had a New Orleans bagel. We also had a calamari side dish, smoothie, and 2 craft beers. All great! If you enjoy a good beer, The Growler would be the place to visit 😊 Emily, whom took care of us, was very kind to us too which made our experience wonderful.

First class breakfast/brunch and excellent service by the young lady on duty/service. I will certainly be a regular now at Growler. Spotless and clean and an excellent atmosphere.

The food is amazing here with healthy fresh options always. Often have vegan salad bowl with prawns, but today had Ramen noodle bowl with chicken. Tip for staff: if someone asks what a menu item is, saying, " I don't know, I've never had it" is not the best answer to encourage customers.

Place has a nice appearance, staff friendly and efficient. They allow dogs, the night we were there they were very busy, we had quiet a wait for our food. The manager came over and apologised for the long wait, we had a complimentary cup of coffee, after a couple of minutes our food arrived. The pic's show that the food was very good or that we were very hungry. I'll leave that for you to decide. We will be back.

Great vegan options, the staff are super lovely, knowledgeable and attentive, and they let us bring our dog in. Amazing beer selection too. We were very pleased to stumble upon this spot and highly recommend!
