Not sure why Trip Advisor still claiming this is the top Indian eatery in Tadcaster. It was closed when we went out of our way to visit and there was no sign of it re-opening

This is up there with the very best Indian meals I have had. Welcomed into a lovely clean restaurant by two very polite welcoming members of staff. Started with poppadoms and pickle tray, following by a Mixed Kebab and a Shami Kebab and for mains we had a Chicken Tikka Korahi, Sonali Special, Fried Rice and Garlic Naan. All of the food was fresh, tasty and spiced perfectly. The staff were great, asked us how long we wanted between courses and were not pushy at all. Would not hesitate to recommend and will be calling again soon, what a find!

We have been to this restaurant 3 times while visiting family in the area. What can I say? It is the best indian myself and hubby have ever had! From the pickle tray, the food the wine etc etc etc. Staff are very friendly and efficient! Five Stars! Try it you wont be disappointed.

Popped in whilst visiting Tadcaster, the restaurant is spotlessly clean and we received a friendly welcome on our arrival. The food was delicious with a good choice in the menu. The restaurant was busy for a Wednesday night which can only be a good thing. If you like Indian food you won’t be disappointed eating here.

We visited this restaurant on Friday evening, the two guys working where really friendly, asking us what sort of food we like and advising us about the food on the menu. Both our meals were amazing, the best and tastiest Indian meal we have probably ever had. We would go back to Tadcaster if only to visit this little gem. Thanks guys.

We had a good experience at Sonali, walking around the town looking for some nosh. They have a good menu, are very friendly and the food was first class. Highly recommended.

A gem of a place with fabulous friendly service. The restaurant is clean and welcoming. Plenty of choice and with help on hand should you need any recommendations. The portions are plentyful and the food is both tasty and fresh. Will definitely be returning.

Had a takeaway from here tonight for the first time after moving to Boston Spa recently. Good was very good, mich better than the Indian on Boston Spa High Street. Really enjoyable, nice guys in there too. Will go again for sure and will get booked in the restaurant soon.

Visited Sonali with great expectations on Saturday evening but unfortunately was left feeling disappointed. Staff were friendly and courteous and I don't have any complaints about that. No delays with the food which all came hot and in a timely manner. Started off well with popodums and the pickle tray. the pickles were full of flavour and the popodums perfectly crisp so it started off perfectly. Ordered both fish and chicken pakoras for starter (shared) and these were certainly passable. My friend loved the fish pakoras although I the fish for me lacked flavour - could have been anything in the middle really. It was the main that was the biggest disappointment - ordered the garlic naan, rice and chapatis were all fine but really let down by two out of three mains being very watery. One of my friends ordered a Phal (extra hot) and that was a nice thick sauce/gravy which had just the right amount of spice but the Chicken Bhuna and my lamb dish (didn't catch the name as I asked for a recommendation) in terms of the sauce had more water than anything else and as a result failed to really flavour the meat. normally im used to seeing the meat coated with sauce rather than swimming in it like a broth but maybe that's the way they do it there. Very curious. Rose wine was like paint stripper - very poor quality. Extremely acidic and almost a bitter taste and bereft of any real flavour. The draught Cobra much more palatable but I'd avoid the Rose personally. Price wise it was very reasonable at just under £20 per head including drinks so no complaints there but the jewel in the crown of any Indian is the main course and that came up short. Based on that i wouldn't visit again.

We visited as a family of four with two teenagers. It was a Sunday evening so fairly quiet but the service was friendly and really good. The food is lovely with a good selection. There was a big group near us who had one young child and someone who didn’t like curry much and the waiter was being really helpful in making suggestions. Make sure you try the onion baji and chicken pakora. They are some of the best we’ve had.

We have been going to this restaurant for over 6 years, both our children have grown up visiting this restaurant from being in car seats and have always been made welcome. We have enjoyed a wide range of evenings... from a Saturday night meal for 2, a Friday night treat for all the family, girls nights and catch up with friends, what ever the get-together the service has always been friendly and welcoming and the food always leaves us craving another visit. For us we love this style of spicy food which means there is little hope for similar restaurants - Great value for money, great variety of dishes and great service!

The occasion was a Saturday evening with friends, the restaurant was very busy however our allotted table was ready at the pre booked time. The waiters were friendly and attentive with the food being very good ( as we hoped from reading trip advisor comments ahead of booking) After the starters we were given the option of waiting 10 minutes before the mains came to the table which we accepted. When the mains arrived the food was warm but not hot suggesting it was ready 10 minutes previously and possibly not kept in an oven......maybe an oversight on our part however whenever the food is served up it needs to be piping hot.

Booked for Boxing Day. I wasn't disapointed the food was very good and the service was equally good. We will definately be back.

We stopped in here by chance to break a journey from Cambridges to Swaledale and really got lucky as both the food and atmosphere were excellent - especially a well-flavoured lamb madras. Mo and Taz looked after us well and we headed off refreshed and planning to visit again..

Walked from Boston Spa to Tadcaster late afternoon and made it to the pub before darkness.

I love the Sonali. This is one of the best Indian restaurants I've been too. Most of all the food is absolutely super, very tasty, full of flavour. There's a very good choice on the menu. The staff are really friendly, especially Mo & Taz who work weekends when I usually go. . A good sign is when you go past mid week the restaurant is usually well over half full. Weekend you do need to book in advance as it is so popular. They also do takeaway (pick up only). Highly recommended. 5 stars

we visited the sonali a few times over the last 18 months and every time we are amazed by the quality of food. We tried a few new dishes (new to us) and we have never been disapointed, the service is top class as well.

Out for an evening drive looking for a country pub, drive through Tadcaster and found this lovely Indian restaurant. We were welcomed by Taz a very pleasant young man who took our order and updated us on the progress. The food was delivered by Mo a very gracious young man and what a delight. The chicken saag was spicy and tasty the chicken sali a delight and the pathia exquisite. The sundries and naan were excellent. The atmosphere in the restaurant was really good made even more welcoming by the delightful staff. I certainly will return, thank you for tasty food.

Visited here, chanced upon this lovely place- staff were very welcoming and friendly - food was plentiful and very tasty (very reasonable prices ) As a regular visitor to the area will definitely be back - thanks to Mo & Taz for a very relaxed and enjoyable unhurried meal

Called in on a Tuesday evening but didn't have a table booked and was greeting by a very pleasant young man making us feel very welcomed. The food choice was excellent and the service second to none. I would definitely recommend this lovely restaurant.

A lovely little Indian restaurant. The poppadoms and pickle tray is delicious (always my favourite), and the chicken Karahi was really tasty. They are really friendly and the food came out quickly.

Two friendly staff welcome us to the Sonali - they made recommendations from the menu. The food came quickly and it was excellent. Although we are not likely to be in that area in the near future I would certainly go again. Try the Tezab - I had the lamb - it really is hot but with real flavour.

We found Sonali on a quick Pitt stop while passing through Tadcaster and we are glad we did. The food was fantastic very authentic and the service was second to none. If we’re passing again we know where to stop for tea thanks guys 😀

Enjoyed a lovely meal at Sonali on a Friday evening out in Tadcaster. Lots of choice on the menu and good service from the waiting staff. Well worth another visit.

Been twice, once in august then for our anniversary in December.

Called in as i was passing . Very quiet due to the weather. Had an excellent meal and a beer. Very flavourful and the chicken tikka was most which is always the sign of freshness. Very friendly folks looking after me.

Well after going for a couple of drinks with the intention of going to a big well known chain of Indian restaurants 4 miles away we came across this little gem and so glad we did. Welcoming, warm , cosy. The food was one of the best curries I have ever had. The lamb was to die for. Such a shame I live 30 miles away.

Friendly service and a good atmosphere, make this an enjoyable expeience every time. They did an offer for Boxing Day and New Year's Day and we went on 1 January. Can really recommend the fish pakora

This is a small but fully authentic Indian eatery based in tadcaster. Food is very tasty, fresh and served by caring, friendly staff. Give it a try. Not cheap but who wants cheap?

Took the advice from previous trip advisor. You need to book at this establishment. The quality of the food is far superior than any other establishments I've been to. The portions are big and hearty and full of flavour. Had really good starters and meal and quality lagers, and was charged so little for so much. The staff are very courteous and prompt with drinks and very obliging.

This was a lovely meal and the staff were very friendly. I used to go here a lot when I lived in York many years ago and the quality was as good now as it was then The portion sizes were good too.

The food was very nice, up there with the best we have eaten before in a lot of similar places. Decor was pleasant also. Oh and Cobra on tap! Will return.

Good food, not ghee laden like in some places. Authentic taste, good service and clean. Will definitely be going back.

We enjoyed our dinner at Sonali. The dishes we ordered were tasty and the portions were generous. I did think charging for each poppadom and each individual pickle was a bit of a rip off- at our regular these items are complimentary. At the very least, have a set price for the pickle dish and a few poppadoms. Charging for each pickle is penny pinching in my opinion. Service was excellent. I would recommend this restaurant.

The staff are very friendly and chatty, great choice on the menu and the food is absolutely delicious, well presented and plentiful. I would advise to book as this place gets quite busy even on weeknights and you don't want to miss out. So glad they re-opened after the awful flood - I will be returning soon!

Delighted to see Sonali back 17 months after the flood. The atmosphere is as welcoming as ever and, if anything, the food has got even better. Easily the match of the food at some of the bigger, swisher looking restaurants in the wider area. Definitely recommend it.

The sonali has only just reopened after the floods in Tadcaster 2 years ago. So happy to have it open again, it's looks great inside and has been done up nicely. We went last night and the food was amazing, I had chicken chaat (always my favourite when I visit here) and the chicken tikka korahi, both were beautifully cooked. There were 6 of us and the restaurant was busy but the standard of the service was excellent. Not one bad comment, can't wait to go back again.

My partner and I used to regularly visit here before the devastating Tadcaster flood 2 years ago. We were OVER the moon to here the Sonali was re-opening hence booking a table on opening night. Superb food, fantastic service and wonderful refurbishment. Back in business and better than ever. Definitely recommend without hesitation.

I recently visited sonali restaurant before the flooding, I was disgusted on the service to the customers and also how they treated their staff. The food was ok, and the bar staff was very average, asking when I was nearly finished my mealIf I would like another drink. Overall I was appalled on how they treat staff and how they treat customers.

Visited as we were in york doing a food fair! The food was lush and the staff so friendly we returned months later to see it was closed because of the floods, we were gutted but later found they have another restaurant... we are deffo going to go when we are back in york. Highly reccomend 10 out of 10.

This is a friendly place that we dropped in at one evening on spec.The food was good and the staff were reasonably friendly. The decor is mostly quite tired and - as of summer 2015, was very much in need of repainting.Tadcaster has very few later night alternatives and so this place should get by well...

We've been coming here for 9 years and have never had a bad experience. The food is consistently good. The chefs are great and you can tell the different chefs by slight nuances in their cooking styles. The menu is extensive but well priced. It's tasty, so tasty. Certainly the best Indian food I've had. Recently hit by the floods but kept going from another site. I'd recommend fried fish. Absolutely delicious.

Been here many many times and does not fail to supply a very nice meal.The staff are very good and always make us welcome nothing is too much trouble for them if you are now sure what to order.We used to order a starter and main course but could never eat it all, the gaffer told us not to have a starter and just order the main course IT WORKED we now eat it all where else would you find that. He was losing money !

We popped in here for an evening meal opposed to going back into York after a day shopping. We were not disappointed, fantastic food with plenty of spice and flavour, staff extremely cheerful and welcoming. Only a little place, but very traditional and cosy, and doesn't feel like you are all on top of each other, just very comfortable. Many thanks to all staff for a lovely evening and a fab meal all at an affordable price, very good value for money. Highly recommended !!!

Staff were fantastic very friendly, but to advertise Solani house special, chicken tikka masala and find out they use pataks masala currys paste is pathetic for £7.95. Will never use this Restraunt again.

Delicious food. We got two specials, and they were really tasty. Great naan and chapattis. Good service too. Would go again. Only downside was soft drinks ..cola and lemonade were flatter than holland .....

Having written a previous excellent review on this restaurant, I am afraid after todays meal it has gone down in my estimation. I chose the chefs special, I think it would have been better named Chefs night off special, not good at all.We found a voucher for 10% off the bill on the internet. Could not get it to print so took it on my phone, they would not honour it. So if you want the 10% off print the voucher! They would have got it back anyway as a tip, so we didnt tip Shame because previously we have been on several occasions and enjoyed it. Dont think we will be going back.

We have used this restaurant regularly since moving to the area and had invited a couple to join us for the evening. Previously the service had been patchy, dependent upon the person waiting on you, but this evening the service was indifferent at best and rude at worst. Our friends wanted minted yogurt to go with their mixed starter and were told 'use theirs - they've got some with their poppadums'!Our two supposedly different dishes were almost impossible to differentiate and lacked the character we had been served before.I don't think we shall be returning. We visited the Sonali after recommendations and we were not disappointed! From the outside it looks nothing special. Our party consisted of 6 adults and we all chose different dishes, a few side dishes, naan bread and of course popadoms and chutneys to start with. Despite the Sonali being full we were served speedily and courteously and there was no rush to leave when we had finished eating. All in all it was a cracking Indian meal and If we lived nearer we would definitely return.

The pickle tray & poppadoms were one of the best we've ever had, the starters were also excellent. Two of the 3 main courses came out together but the 3rd meal came out about 8 minutes later and the portion of chips we had ordered was totally forgotten about ! Once the waiters have got their act together this little restaurant will be outstanding.

I go there for takeaway often and a meal in with the misses it has the most flaver out off eny indian i have ever eaten in it is worth going for a meal and its really cheap comaired to most indians i spent £34 the 2 off us we had 2 starters 2 mains 2 sides 5 drinks and 2 pudding grate value for your money :)

Visited this restaurant last week and we're glad we had booked a table as the place was packed!! Always a good sign and we not disappointed. Our friend Terry could not decide which meal to have so he asked me to close my eyes and just point to a meal on the menu. My finger landed on main meal number 6 which to my amazement was what he ordered!! It turned out to be the best curry he has ever eaten and he knows his curries!! It was that good he even asked where the chef came from. All our other meals were excellent too and very good value for money along with reasonably priced dinks.Our first visit but hopefully not the last.

We regularly use this restaurant for our take away treat at the weekend. It is invariably booked solid, so for a table at the weekend make sure you book!We have also eaten in during the week and thoroughly enjoyed it.The restaurant has an extensive menu and cater to your individual tastes in regard to the amount of heat, or not, in a particular dish.The staff are always very friendly and efficient.Without a doubt this is our favourite Indian restaurant in the area.

To be totally honest it's the most tasteless & bland curry that I've had in many years. (Sorry but true)To be fair the staff was friendly enough but I was just disappointed with the food. I will be in no rush to go back I'd rather go a few extra miles to somewhere different .

This is a fantastic Indian restaurant that cook your indian to your own specification. They are friendly and both the food and the service is amazing. It is my favourite place to get locally.

My husband and I called here for a meal whilst staying nearby. It was a midweek meal so the restaurant was quiet but it was a nice experience. The menu has plenty of choice and we enjoyed the food and we would be happy to go back.

We had heard some good things about Sonali so tried it for the first time last weekend. Food is OK, but no better than this - there are much better indian restaurants if you can go a little further afield. However, the service is very poor. We ordered our takeaway, and was told to pick it up at 7:30pm - there was 4 of us standing up in a hot restaurant waiting, with staff pushing past us. At 7:40pm, manager assured me that our takeaway would just be 2 mins longer. but we didn't get served until 8:10pm - 40 minutes waiting with my 4 year old daughter, standing in a hot restaurant, very uncomfortable (despite me asking after we had paid, whether we should go for a while and come back, and told no). You may be ok in the restaurant although service looked slow here too, and I can't imagine food is any better.

We are regulars here and use it as a takeaway as well. The staff are so friendly and helpful. As a slimming world member if you tell them this they get he chef to make it as low fat as possible! The food is always fantastic and always too much - but they always bag it up for you to take home. Can highly recommend Sonali. Best dish for me is the gosht. It's with lamb on the menu but they change it to a meat or veggie option.

Small restaurant, but very pleasant. The staff were very attentive, the food was excellent, very tasty. The menu was varied and had some interesting choices. We felt that it was one of the best meals of this type that we have eaten. We will definitely return. Thank you .

visited on a Saturday night without booking, arrived about 8ish as knew a large party was booked in and were prepared for a wait for food but didn't have to waitMenu huge and lots of more unusual dishes that don't see in many local indian restaurants.Reasonably priced for both food and drinks and we were pleasantly suprised with bill as used a money off voucher which they gave back to us to use againservice attentive without being pushytoilets nice and cleanHave since used for couple of takeaways and these were just as good.Will be returning

The food here is of a high quality and there are some unusual as well as standard dishes on the menu. The service was efficient and the welcome warm. The toilets were clean and fresh!

Took a takeaway out of here when visiting York, and made a good choice - I don't think I've eaten better Indian food. Also made a good choice to 'take away' - the restaurant is relatively small and the noisy women that made up the family evening out had voices that were as subtle as a pint of turpentine. Sadly the pitch was just below the level at which only dogs can hear. I was served by polite staff and after a short discussion they agreed to give me the special discount offered on their website when I showed them the voucher on my tablet - they really wanted a printout. I soon left with my ears bleeding, carrying my bag of goods into the relative tranquility of Bridge Street on a Saturday night. The fried fish starter won't find it's way onto my order again, but the masala, madras, sag aloo, chapattis and other bits and pieces were first class. I could definitely recommend this place for it's food, but if you want a civil conversation along with your meal, eat it in the car, the street or even better, at home - unless of course, you owe your next door neighbours an hour's break from the wife's razor edged voice box!

We had a family meal out at Sonali this weekend, my first visit. There were 6 hungry adults. We all enjoyed our excellent meals, including mild korma, hot dishes, a fish dish, nan, all the usual stuff. We had a very enjoyable evening, with really good food and all reasonably priced. We will return for sure. Thank you

I have been on many occasions to Sonali's and have never been disappointed. This place sets the bench mark for other Indian Restaurants to follow. I often find that I am comparing the standards of other restaurants to Sonali's. I can't understand how they can consistently produce such consistently high quality at very reasonable prices. Well done you have my vote every time. The only criticism I have is that the restaurant is cramped and could do with some air con.

Me and my other half eat here quite often. It really is very good food, prices are average for indian food in the area, but definately not overpriced for what you get. I rarely manage to eat everything i order as you get som much food! Also, they sell king cobra by the bottle which is always a bonus. The guys who work there are really nice, are more than happy to have an interesting conversation, but know when to leave you to your meal too. Takeaway food is just as good as the resteraunt food, doesnt come with an inch of grease on top which is always good :-)

We use Sonalli on a regular basis for takeaway and eating in. The food is always cooked to a high standard and offers something a little different from your mainstream curry. Try the Lankini it's delicious. The waiters are very friendly and attentive. A real gem!!!!

We eat at this place on a regular basis and wouldn't consider going anywhere else....it's that good!The staff are very friendly, polite and nothing is too much trouble. The food is amazing and never disappoints, and there is plenty of choice......chicken pakora is the best!We have also visited the Pocklington and Market Weighton branches and these are equally as good.....but Taddy will always be the favourite.

Always nice to get something different. In this case it was the pickles with the paps. At least 3 of the 6 were new to me. Not sure what they were but all tasty and fresh.All shared a melange of mains - the one I had wwere lovely with a special mention for Chicken Rajastani. The gobi and dall sides were gorgeous.All in all the food was fabulous.And a negative - the draught lager was so gassy yet flat that I left half. Stick to the bottles when I go back.

We had a meal for two in the restaurant. It was our first visit. We were made to feel very welcome and the staff were very helpful in describing and recommending our choices, based on our preferences.The food was very well cooked, very tasty, bags of flavour without being over spiced. We were not rushed, neither was the service slow. We were always asked if we were ready for our next course to be served.The price was good value and we came away feeling we had eaten well, sufficient portions and very good attentative sevice.

I've been to the Sonali on several occasions over the past few years and the food and service is always excellent. Perhaps with all the dishes on the menu it's a little odd to comment on the pickle tray but I think it is excellent and not stingy like some. I think it's better than the Aagrah (although my friend would disagree).

Visited on a Friday night after a trip to the races. We live in Tadcaster and have eaten here many times. The two men ordered a takeaway (which is the same food as served to seated diners), while my daughter and I walked home. The men asked for a couple of pints of lager while they waited. The lager was awful - completely flat and not nice at all. They were told that this was a known fault and that engineers were coming on Monday, and were given bottles of lager instead - but if they knew the lager was not right, why serve it?When the food was brought home, we found that a portion of rice was missing, so there wasn't enough food for everybody. The meal was okay, just not as good as usual. This was disappointing, as the food is usually outstanding. We paid £37 for a moderate amount of food (part of which was missing), and two bottles of lager, so its quite pricey for a takeaway.

We visited late one night and there were a few other customers but we were served straight away. Good service and good food at a reasonable price. Would recommend.

This is my partners favourite Indian restaraunt, I keep suggesting we try others but we never do! You are always guaranteed an excellent meal at Sonali! Service is good, although on occasion when they are busy we have felt a little pressured to move and make way for other guests. The food is excellent value for money I feel, I believe you also get a discount on take away from this place too! I would highly recommend to friends and family and I will no doubt continue to dine here for many years to come!
