We actually came twice. It was really cosy and nice food. The fish pie was delicious as was the salmon but my friend felt the sea bass whilst nice would have been much nicer woth a sauce. Lovely staff and not unreasonable prices

Whilst having an overnight stop in Ilfracombe we visited The Smugglers Restaurant. The visit was extremely good, the staff were very attentive, our meals were very good and the waiting time was average. The decor within the restaurant was really good, there were all manner of items to see. I would happily revisit and would be happy to recommend to family and friends. Thank you to the staff that were working on Monday evening, we really enjoyed our visit and our meals. An enjoyable meal

Ordered the fish pie and was very disappointed 😔. I expected a succulent pie full of a variety of fish, especially as there is a fresh fish shop on the opposite side of the harbour. Pie was watery with lots of leek and minimal cheap white fish, mashed potato was also very wet. Husband had a small roast liked like Aunt Bessie's Yorkshire's. Sad that I didn't have the courage to say anything at the time. Typically British

Little Gem of a place, serving some great seafood dishes. Only let down by choice of beer/ larger, only 1 type of larger on tap and that was a premium, would of done better with mid range option.

Was drawn into this place from the outside and interior and assumed by how busy it was that the food would match. However we came away feeling very underwhelmed to be honest. The service was mediocre, not long to wait for a table, however we was then sat at said table for 15 minutes before a drink order was taken. The food was bland and basic to say the least and definitely not worth the price tag that came with it. I ordered garlic mushrooms for starter and the seafood platter, expecting exactly that, a platter .. instead what did come was a normal plate that had 2 lots of prawns, a basic white fish with no seasoning, fried whitebait and frozen garden peas with a tub of chips, absolutely not the 'seafood platter' I was expecting or what I've had before from other restaurants. Personally wouldn't come again, which is a real shame given the interior of this place.

The restaurant looks promising from the outside and after a short wait we had a table. Unfortunately the meals that came out were terrible, my salmon was dry with no sign of the creamy garlic sauce as in the menu, a tiny handful of frozen peas and a bucket of chips. My husband’s surf and turf was equally disappointing with an over cooked tough steak, three prawns and a bucket of chips. We’re not the types of people to kick up a fuss, however I came away feeling angry at the meal quality for the price. I’m sure some meals must be nicer, my son enjoyed his lasagne but these are obviously prepared in advance. I wouldn’t return.

We found this restaurant as we walked around the harbour and liked the menu. We were able to walk in , as they only take a few Reservations a night. The waitresses were helpful, friendly and attentive. Food was excellent, we had a main of lasagne and sea bass in white wine sauce, and puddings of Eton mess and sorbet. The meal was reasonably priced . The decor is very 80s, but we loved it, and enjoyed looking at all the nick nacks, which were very shiny and clean which was impressive as there are many. Would recommend eating here.

Heard this is the place to go but unable to book a table, told turn up on the evening as early as possible in the hope of getting a table. Food average at best. 8oz Sirloin overcooked more like a flat iron steak chips ok but not outstanding. Salmon with garlic prawns with new potatoes and peas, salmon was bland and peas ok. Starters were good but again average and overpriced. Not sure what the hype is about.

Suggesting suitable food. I had a very small grilled plaice with about 4 new potatoes and a small dish of mushy peas for around £11 my partners fish pie looked more substantial but was mainly mash with one small piece of fish and very little cheese with 5 small potatoes and an unappetising small salad . Would not recommend for the food but the place is quirky and staff very good.

We'd walked passed this place a few times throughout the day looked an interesting place,on entering it seemed quite full but we were seated straight away,so we enquired what fish was actually fresh and caught on the morning was a little disappointed as the harbour is on its doorstep the answer was only the mackerel and lobster was fresh the rest is all frozen... I opted for 2 starters as all the other items seemed large in size, I had the prawn in a garlic butter and then the crab cocktail, everything was presented on shredded red cabbage which was strange, the crab was not what I was expecting at all I did inform the waitress which she kindly removed it from our bill,it was full of shell and tasteless I was expecting white chunks of fleshy crab not a brown type of pate my partner had venison pie the pie looked impressive I think the cauliflower, carrots and cabbage should be left off seemed they were overcooked, pie and chips would of been suffice,I really was expecting boards with fish of the day which would change according to what was caught that day...seemed like the roast dinners seemed more popular to others who were eating there.decor was interesting, staff we very polite and efficient.

It was my 50th birthday and I'd always wanted to try lobster and knew that it was served here. It was my first time eating it and so have nothing to compare it to but I found it tasty and tender and definitely worth the small extravagance. The staff were friendly, smiling and attentive. The one downside was that it is a very small place and people are sat waiting for a table just a few feet away from where I was dining. Any semi-private or intimate conversation is impossible. Even though it was extremely busy on the night I went I did not feel rushed by the staff. I would definitely of given 5 out of 5 if they had a separate waiting area.

It was packed when we arrived which is usually a good sign and waited 40 minutes for a table. When we finally got a table I ordered the lobster (big mistake) it wasn't presented well at all and serving it with rice seemed a bit strange too considering there was barely any sauce. The lobster clearly wasn't fresh as it was a little bit chewy and the shell on the claws was like rubber making it difficult to break so it was probably frozen. £30 for lobster cooked from frozen should be a prison sentence on top of all that the salad wasn't dressed either. My dad ordered the fish pie which he said was really nice but the portion was tiny and they were serving frozen chips too which is fine but I would expect for them to make homemade chips in such an expensive restaurant the staff were very friendly and helpful the coffee was lovely. The restaurant was a little cramped and seemed somewhat over decorated it was difficult to relax and have a conversation because people were standing around waiting for tables and were really close to where we were sitting we had to whisper in order to have a private conversation overall from the outside looking in it looks very impressive but it is a different story when you actually go in and eat.

Unfortunately they do not take bookings, but if you do have to wait for a table it is worth it. If paying by cash you can pay your waitress if by card you need to pay at the bar. Popped in for an evening meal with parents and brother. We were seated quickly and was fairly busy inside. My mum doesn't eat a lot and looking at the other tables, the portions looked huge. We asked one particular waitress if it would be possible to have 2 sausages rather than 3 on one of the dishes. This waitress begrudgingly said yes but then said we couldn't choose 2 of the same flavour. Bizarre! Why couldn't we have 2 pork sausages. In the end mum chose the cottage pie which was fine if not a little bland. I chose the sea bass which was delicious and dad chose the chicken, bacon leek pie which was also lovely. Brother had the omelette and new potatoes as he needed a gluten free option. This was nice but could do with more gluten free options. Overall very nice food and cosy atmosphere but slightly let down the waitress.

I had cottage pie with lovely creamy mash and beautifully cooked veg. Very inkeeping with the surroundings of the location. Food was lovely had salmon with garlic butter, my husband had venison pie & staff were very curious. Would definitely return.

We walked by this restaurant a couple of times and it was always busy, which is a good sign. Menu looked good so we decided to eat there. The staff were all friendly and efficient, and the restaurant looks very clean. The food, however was ok but a bit disappointing. We ordered steak which came out cooked just as requested with frozen chips, a couple of anaemic looking onion rings and peas. The fish pie was quite tasty and well seasoned but mostly mashed potatoes with cheesy topping, I failed to find any lumps of fish at all!! Bit like eating cheesy mash and chips!! Didn’t think it was good value for money.

WOW,what a find. Don't be put off with lack of customers in here, the service and food is superb. Spoke with a couple who had been coming back over 10 years and was not disappointed. Both had roasts, chicken and beef. Good sized portions and plenty of meat. Served quickly and best interior in Ilfracombe. Good selection of food and beverages. Will be back again

After a few years since staying in Ilfracombe we returned again for a holiday and after visiting Smugglers twice on our last visit and highly rated it we could not wait for our return visit to enjoy the food. There was six of us last time yet with this visit there was just 5, we tried to fit in one of the booths but it was not possible as space is tight in there anyway - so I had to sit on a middle table near as I could to my family. I was told that the middle tables could not be moved. This was no issue really but with hindsight years ago I seem to remember the table was moved over for us all to sit together?

We visited this week early evening and easily got a table. Later it was busy, so wise to visit before the rush or book ahead.

A very welcome find when not much else was open on a wet post- Christmas morning. The menu looked interesting and delicious although we were only there for a coffee which was excellent! A nice atmosphere with friendly staff.

Unfortunaltely the chicken was just not fit to eat, it was completely over cooked and 1 fillet barely the size of coke bottle lid Chips were ok

I am thrilled that you are getting back up and running. I've had so many relaxed and friendly hours in the cafe with friends that I am looking forward to more accompanied by a fab nut roast and side salads fit for a queen. Airy and plenty of space (unlike other cafes that cram as many in as they can) so it feels very Covid safe even without have to make big changes.

Excellent as always. Great fish, perfect crispy batter and lovely chips. All freshly cooked to order so very hot. Love the option of a slice of lemon. Friendly and helpful staff and a wonderful location.

Even in December, when the town is quiet, the food was superb and the service could not be faulted.
